The biggest night in music might have been delayed (it was originally scheduled for Jan. 31), but it’s ﬁnally here. The 63rd Grammys are airing this year live on Sunday, March 14, on CBS, celebrating the best in music from late 2019 to 2020. The show will be hosted by The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah and will of course feature epic performances — the roster wasn’t available at presstime, but the night promises not to disappoint. Beyoncé leads the nominations list this year with nine (making her the most nominated female in Grammys history), followed by Dua Lipa, Roddy Ricch and Taylor Swift with six each. Also in the mix are Brittany Howard, of Alabama Shakes fame, with ﬁve nominations, and Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, DaBaby, Phoebe Bridgers, Justin Bieber, John Beasley and David Frost, all tied with four apiece.

BEING WORKED ON AT ABC ABC is developing Kim Spa, a semiautobiographical comedy from Peter Kim (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Mad TV’s Bobby Lee, both of whom will star. In the show, a young man (Kim) returns home after his father dies to work with his brother (Lee) and the rest of their relatives at the family’s Korean spa business.

Franklin sang gospel songs in her father’s church in Detroit in the 1950s, then blossomed into a pop singer in the 1960s. By the end of the decade, she was crowned “Queen of Soul,” and she would go on to leave an indelible legacy as performer, pioneer, activist and icon. “Aretha had such an amazing and long career.

She lived a beautiful life that was full of peaks and valleys that led to her incredible success,” says Aretha showrunner Suzan-Lori Parks. “So many things that she went through — the highs, the lows — would have crushed a lesser being, in my opinion.” Aretha was larger than life, and it requires an extraordinary talent to portray her. I learned to sing and tell stories through song, by listening to her,” Erivo says. “I approached playing Aretha by listening to her music, paying attention to her voice, and honing in on how she communicates with her music. ... I’ve also been poring over her interviews to learn her cadence and the ways in which she spoke. I’ve really enjoyed learning about Aretha as a person as well as her music. n a remote part of Tennessee, Naomi Judd enjoys the beauty and privacy that the lush country hills offer. Living on a farm with her husband of 30plus years (Larry Strickland, a gospel artist and former backup singer to Elvis), she has surrounded herself with the people she loves most. Behind her house and just over the hill is the second half of the Grammy Award-winning duo the Judds, daughter Wynonna. “She could get to me in about five minutes if she comes on her ATV,” Naomi tells. “And then Ashley [Naomi’s movie star and humanitarian youngest daughter] lives next door and it’s one minute from her house to my house. … That’s the way I’ve always wanted it.” Adding to that girl power is another music great, Reba McEntire, who lives just around the bend. In their parts there are no streets; there are just simple roads. It’s a serene place for a music icon whose younger days were filled with harsh family secrets and unthinkable hardships, yet Naomi is a survivor, a woman who has overcome countless obstacles and today continues to inspire others through her music, books and speaking. On this particular day in January, we connect with Naomi to talk about her role in V.C. Andrews’ Ruby; it’s the first of four films that are part of Lifetime’s V.C. Andrews Landry Movie Series Event. The films follow Ruby Landry (Raechelle Banno), who, after being raised by her loving grandmother in the Louisiana bayou, is ensnared in a world of dark family secrets and betrayal when she discovers she has another family living in New Orleans. “I find something in every character that they ask me to play,” Naomi says. “There’s got to be something.” Naomi opens the four-film series starring as

Ruby’s Grandmère Catherine. “My first words — because I’m a shaman, I’m the medicine woman in the Bayou area — may be the first scene of the film. I walk up to this shanty that has a dirt floor. There’s a woman in agony, lying there, crying softly. She’s holding a newborn baby, but it’s dead, as the baby died at birth. So they had me come in to reduce the evil spirits in the room,” she explains. “So when I walk in and I see her lying there on the ground, the floor, the first thing I do is holler [some foreign ritual language].” The Landry book series — Ruby, Pearl in the Mist, All That Glitters and Hidden Jewel — is the secondhighest-selling series from V.C. Andrews, and Lifetime’s adaptation most likely will top ratings as did some of the other adaptations. Naomi, a bestselling author herself, wasn’t familiar with this book series but was quick to get sucked into the storyline. “As we kept going along, I’d get totally caught up in it. … In a way there were touchstones for me in the movie. And the fact that I’m a grandmother and I’m so protective.” The Landry story has it all — horrible family secrets, an evil twin, an evil stepmother, lies, betrayal and everything else that has made V.C. Andrews’ stories so popular. Naomi said she did everything she could to stay in character and not be distracted by the typical adorations that graciously come her way while filming. “My girlfriend Dolly Parton did a movie 9 to 5. I was talking to Dolly about making TV movies and everything, because the interesting thing is that when we’re onstage, we’re Dolly Parton or Naomi Judd or Wynonna Judd. But when making a movie this is fantasy, and we literally have to pluck our words out of whatever the heck is going on,” Naomi laughs. “It was unusual to know that [the stars of this film, Raechelle and Karina Banno] were twins. I’m in every scene with Raechelle … and that little squirt was so fun to work with. She was just delightful.” And speaking of delightful, the Judds recently reunited this past holiday and did a virtual concert. It was the first time they performed together in almost 15 years. So how is the duo’s relationship these days? “We’re really good,” Naomi says. “She’s the funniest person I know.” Naomi says she’s ready to perform more. As for a much-needed updated biopic on the Judds or Naomi’s life, she’s not talking. “I can’t talk about anything, but there is something. And it’s really hard for me not to spill the beans all the time, because my mom was the biggest gossip in our little town where I grew up and I swore I’d never be like her. I try, but it doesn’t always work.” For now, be satisfied seeing the icon happy and healthy, and hope for more to come.
