FEUD: CAPOTE VS. THE SWANS

Wednesdays beginning Jan. 31 on FX SEASON PREMIERE! In a scene from the new eight-episode season of FX’s Feud, writer Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) explains the sobriquet he gave to his inner circle of high-society lady friends. “They are swans. Beautiful and unruffled above the water, stunning, singular, gliding through the pond of society,” he says. “But God gave them too much baggage, you see. Underneath the crisp surface of the water, they have to paddle twice as fast and vigorously as an ordinary duck just to stay

afloat. It’s a great burden only some can bear.” Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, based on Laurence Leamer’s Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era, chronicles the In Cold Blood author’s time among The Swans — including Babe Paley (Naomi Watts), Slim Keith (Diane Lane), C.Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny), Joanne Carson (Molly Ringwald), Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart) and Ann Woodward (Demi Moore) — and how a thinly veiled exposé he published shattered their trust and led to his exile. Watts, who is also an executive producer, filled us in on the top-shelf experience of Feud.

TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY Sundays beginning Jan. 14 on HBO SEASON PREMIERE!

Five years after the last season ended, and about as far as one can go from Arkansas, True Detective returns us to the heart of dark crime thrillers with a new showrunner and a new, unusual location: Arctic Alaska. Set entirely at night, during winter, the new season, written and directed by Issa López, follows two detectives (Jodie Foster and Kali Reis) as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of a group of research scientists. “This is the type of role that we have not seen Jodie Foster play, and I think it’s so delightful and so naughty,” says López of the casting. “I’ve never had a collaborator like Jodie Foster. Not only is she, I think, the best actor of her generation, it’s such a pleasure to bring her into a role like that, back at the center of the conversation. She was so happy, having so much fun, and that sets the tone for the entire cast.” This might surprise some viewers, considering the prickly, cantankerous (and extremely entertaining) nature of Foster’s character, Detective Liz Danvers. In fact, nearly every character here is battling their own inner demons in some way. This show is dark in more ways than one. Time becomes more elusive as the episodes progress without a single scene in daylight, but what stands out even more than that is how damaged some of these Arctic inhabitants are, and how grisly the crimes become. Maybe so much darkness will inevitably make people dark, too, or maybe they’re dysfunctional for other reasons, but there are very few healthy relationships in Ennis, Alaska, and more than a few ghosts — literal and otherwise. “It’s a meditation on loneliness,” López explains. If any one word could describe this season, it would definitely be that one. Not just because this small Arctic town is rather isolated, cold to the point of being deadly and underpopulated, but because the only people who seem to have much of a family life or a community are the Indigenous population, who, amid the murder investigation, are rallying together to protest against a mining corporation that keeps half the town employed but is also slowly poisoning them with radioactive output. All of this eventually comes to a head, with locals at each other’s throats by the end. Night Country is right on. With so many heavy topics at play, it’s a small miracle that the cast and crew were mostly unaffected by the dark mood that permeates the series, which was filmed in Iceland. “We never got the blues,” López says. “I’m a Mexican who hates the cold. Nobody asked me to write this. But when I was there, it was so much fun. It was so incredible to be with this team. Iceland is gorgeous. Reykjavik is a beautiful tiny city with some of the best food in the world. A lot of the cast was Inuit, and they were in their element. And it was contagious, the enthusiasm and the love and the laughter. So, it was the opposite. When it was done and it was April and the days started to get longer, it was sad. It was hard to say goodbye to the long nights and go back into the world, which amazed us all.” Still, you may want to watch this one with the lights on. — Zhanna Slor 7

THE WOMAN IN THE WALL

Sundays beginning Jan. 21 on SHOWTIME NEW SERIES! In this dark psychological thriller, Ruth Wilson stars as Lorna Brady, a distraught woman who suffers from chronic sleepwalking and begins to have trouble recognizing what is real and what isn’t after she finds a woman dead in her home, with no recollection of how she got there or why. Complicating things is Detective Colman Akande (Daryl McCormack), who is investigating the murder of a priest in Dublin, the trail of which leads him to Lorna and her sleepy Irish town. The two murders, which are clearly connected, trigger a sequence of events that brings tragedies and past crimes to light. Though the story is set in a fictional Irish town and around a fictional protagonist, it is based on the real-life history of the Magdalene laundries, convents where young women and teenagers were commonly sent if they got pregnant out of wedlock during the 18th century and well into the 1990s, when they were finally shut down. There, thousands of young women were forcibly separated from their babies and trapped into indentured servitude. The two murders being investigated, while important, mostly serve as a scaffolding to explore the various burdens and forms trauma can take and the consequences of abuse. This one might keep you up at night. — Zhanna Slor

THE PRISON CONFESSIONS OF GYPSY ROSE BLANCHARD

Friday, Jan. 5-Sunday, Jan. 7 on LIFETIME THREE-NIGHT DOCUMENTARY!

HBO and Hulu first introduced us to Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s story with the 2017 documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest and the 2019 fictionalized series The Act. In reality, Gypsy’s story is one of heartbreak and disbelief. Now Lifetime brings unprecedented access to Gypsy Rose in this six-hour documentary special, filmed while she was still in prison. Born in 1991, Gypsy was raised by her mother, Dee Dee, who for years abused Gypsy by lying about her health. Dee Dee convinced family and friends that Gypsy suffered from many illnesses including leukemia to get attention and money, and required Gypsy to get a feeding tube and stay restricted to a wheelchair. In 2015, Dee Dee was

stabbed to death and Gypsy’s boyfriend was found guilty of the crime. The documentary features Gypsy in prison on the eve of her parole hearing as she recounts her emotional journey of being forced to remain Gypsy Rose a child. You’ll hear her Blanchard stories firsthand, including her prison wedding and seeing her fiancé, Ryan, for the first time. The doc also features fascinating yet troubling tales of Gypsy’s secret love life and the depths of the psychological control her mother had on her. Never-before-seen photos, medical records, videos and evidence also bring hidden secrets to the surface and add new insights to this complex story, including Gypsy’s life now, as a married woman. 9

THERESA CAPUTO: RAISING SPIRITS

Thursdays beginning Jan. 25 on LIFETIME NEW SERIES! With her blond locks teased to the moon, and that oh-so-familiar New York sass, Long Island medium Theresa Caputo returns to TV in a new unscripted series that catches fans up with her current life while delivering unforgettable connections to people who have lost a loved one. Here’s what she had to share about her new series: What made you want to return to TV? Theresa Caputo: Even though I’ve been on TV for 10 years, touring for over 10 years, traveling the country for over 10 years, and then have taken my live show to the U.K., I still just love doing what I’ve always done. And that’s going to people’s homes, doing private readings, group readings, doing readings in my home, surprising people with readings. It kind of feels like life is back to normal, you might say.

What’s different or new with the Lifetime series? My family is still a big part of the show, we just have new additions [daughter Victoria had a baby, Larry Jr. got married, she is divorced from Larry Sr.]. You really get to see more of the behind the scenes of what it really is like for me. What do you want people to know about your gift? I want them to believe in an afterlife. I want them to believe and know that the things that they sense and feel that remind them of their loved ones, know that that’s their loved one’s soul. Getting their attention, reminding them that they are with you and sharing this experience with them right at that exact moment. When your lights flicker unexplainably, is that from someone who passed? I always say to people, whatever goes on around you that you think is odd or weird or grabs your attention and you think of your loved one that has died, know that that is them, know that it is their energy and their soul. — Barb Oates 10

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: FANTASY LEAGUE Mondays beginning Jan. 1 on NBC NEW SERIES!

This latest extension of the America’s Got Talent franchise, as its name implies, is set up similarly to a fantasy sports draft. Judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and a returning Mel B will compete alongside the contestants as they draft their own dream teams of winners, finalists, viral sensations and fan favorites from across AGT and international Got Talent editions (Britain, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia and Ukraine) and guide them through the competition. The winning act will receive a grand prize of $250,000, and the judge who drafted the act will earn bragging rights. The studio audience votes each week to

9

determine which acts will advance to the semifinals and final rounds. The show’s Golden Buzzer will be back in the qualifiers and semifinal rounds, sending acts straight to the finals, but with a twist: Each judge can use their buzzer for their own act, or to take an act from another judge’s team. Among the 40 acts competing in Fantasy League are Adrian Stoica and Hurricane, an animal act from AGT Season 18; Chapel Hart, a musical group from AGT Season 17; Kseniya Simonova, a sand artist who won Season 1 of Ukraine’s Got Talent and also appeared on AGT: The Champions Season 1; and Fritzy Rosmerian, a magician from Indonesia’s Got Talent Season 3.

THE FLOOR

Tuesdays beginning Jan. 2 on FOX NEW SERIES! Rob Lowe hosts this quiz show in which 81 players who proclaim to be experts in a unique category — including stuff like famous sidekicks, junk drawer items, dogs, sports movies, birds, mobile apps, The Simpsons, and spices and condiments — occupy a space on a grid. A player is chosen at random to challenge another contestant in a fastpaced duel of knowledge, with the winner claiming the loser’s space. Over 10 weeks, the player who conquers all the spaces on The Floor wins $250,000. “Of the 81 people, approximately eight are booted off every week. They lose and they’re gone,” Lowe says. “By the time you get to the end of the season, there are very few players left, and we’ve gotten to know them. We know that person’s a killer. Or we know this person actually now is on a piece of the floor that isn’t their area of expertise, so they might seem weak. So that kind of strategy element really is what makes the show special.” — Ryan A. Berenz

UNDERCOVER: CAUGHT ON TAPE Premieres Thursday, Jan. 11

The series offers a first-hand account of dangerous criminal investigations from those closest to the action — the undercover agents themselves who are on the front lines, often risking their lives to gather evidence that may help take criminals off the streets.
