HOW TO SURVIVE

SUPER BOWL LIII

We’re running out of chances to delight in Tom Brady’s Super Bowl losses

By Ryan A. Berenz

What’s LIII In Regular Numbers? 53 Is It On TV? Yes. CBS gets the broadcast duties this time. Jim Nantz calls the game with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who is excited to finally get to a Super Bowl after keeping the Cowboys out of it for so many years. How Many People Watch It? Lots! Super Bowl LII averaged 103.4 million viewers on NBC, down 7 percent from the previous year and the lowest number since 2009. That’s still good enough to make it the 10th most-watched American TV program of all time. Anyone Want To Sing At Halftime? Getting someone to perform the Super Bowl halftime show is harder than finding someone to host the Oscars. After a prolonged search, the NFL settled on soccer-mom rock icons Maroon 5 as 2

headliners with guests Travis Scott and Big Boi. Rihanna, Cardi B and Pink reportedly declined to perform. It doesn’t help that the gig pays nothing and the NFL’s treatment of Colin Kaepernick is a sore spot. Is Up With People available? Still With The Commercials? You’ll probably watch all the commercials on YouTube before or after the Super Bowl, yet advertisers will still pay CBS over $5 million for a 30-second TV spot. Expect to see ads from Anheuser-Busch InBev, M&M’s, Colgate, Pringles, Avocados From Mexico, WeatherTech, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota and … Mercedes-Benz. How About Football? Yes, they still do that. The Los Angeles Rams will play the New England Patriots, who will be going to their third straight Super Bowl. Enjoy Tom Brady’s disappointment while you still can. What’s On After? CBS debuts global talent competition series The World’s Best, with host James Corden and judges Drew Barrymore, RuPaul Charles and Faith Hill. Maybe they can find someone to do next year’s halftime show.

What Is This? Super Bowl LIII, the NFL’s championship game for the 2018 season, is played Feb. 3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which is not to be confused with the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans or any other sports venue named after a car we can’t afford.

How “Wonder Woman” Uber-Director Patty Jenkins And Star Chris Pine Translated Fauna Hodel’s Personal Story Of Horror And Triumph Into A Can’t-Turn-Away TV Thriller. By Barb Oates

evered Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has long been a connoisseur of a good story. However, never did she anticipate a story of this magnitude when she met Fauna Hodel for coffee roughly 10 years ago. At their meetup, a then 50-something-yearold Fauna unraveled a story that was truly unbelievable. If you’re not from California, chances are you won’t be familiar with the Hodel name. Fauna was the granddaughter to the infamous Los Angeles physician George Hodel, who in 1949 was accused and acquitted of molesting his 14-year-old daughter Tamar (Fauna’s mother), as well as being linked to the most notorious unsolved murder in L.A. history — the Black Dahlia. But that’s just one element to this twisted story. Fauna’s story actually began when her 4

mother, Tamar, gave birth at 16 and told everyone that the father of the baby was black. Outraged, Tamar’s parents gave Fauna away to a random black maid working at a Nevada casino, and it is from those unthinkable beginnings that writer Sam Sheridan crafted the complicated, multicharacter, six-part TV series I Am the Night, which begins on TNT Jan. 28 and airs Mondays. “I’ve told a lot of stories, and when I met Fauna Hodel and she told me her life story, I’d never had an experience like that,” Jenkins tells us. “Every time I thought I knew where it was headed, it would head in some other direction, and I just ended up being floored. I went home and started researching it, and it was just captivating in the most interesting way because I was deeply inspired by her — she was such a positive, uplifting person — and then

deeply haunted. It was one of the scariest, most haunting stories I’ve ever heard once I got into who George Hodel was.” But it was years after Jenkins’ original meeting with Fauna that the project actually came to fruition. “It was nothing but a strange coincidence that while I was making Wonder Woman, somebody else was trying to do her story, and I was just trying to advise [Fauna] on negotiating a good deal, and she just wouldn’t leave it alone, saying, ‘I know you’re the one. I know you’re the one who’s gonna do it.’ I was saying, ‘Fauna, I am too busy. I can’t. Don’t wait for me.’ And then, it’s so funny that it did work out this way, and she got to be there for us, developing it.” (Unfortunately, Fauna passed away when the series was in pre-production.) It was also on the set of Wonder Woman when Jenkins shared the idea with her male lead and friend Chris Pine, who was equally as jaw-dropped over the story. “Before there was even a mention of me doing it, Patty was just describing the story that she’d heard from Fauna and I said, ‘Yeah, you gotta do it, Patty. You gotta figure out a way to do it. It’s too good,’” Pine tells. “And then Sam Sheridan had an angle on how he could include me in the story, and the combination of a true crime with a tweak on the noir genre, and the character that they laid out for me — it just seemed too good to be true.” For Pine it was a whirlwind as he wrapped Wonder Woman and immediately went to Scotland to film Outlaw King and then pushed to fit in I Am the Night before moving on to the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984. “I have a lot of trust in Patty, and I told her I don’t have much time to prep, so just give me what you want, and give me the courage and foundation of this guy, and then let’s go off and play and see if we can discover it on set,” Pine shares. What they discovered was a complicated, emotionally flawed but extremely likable individual in Pine’s character Jay Singletary,

a disgraced reporter who is tortured by self-loathing and is desperate for a shot at redemption. That opportunity comes in 1965 when he meets Fauna Hodel (played mesmerizingly by India Eisley), who is seeking answers to her secretive origin. “I think the great parallel between these two characters is that this young woman is trying to find who she is, and while she is trying to find who she is, Jay is trying to redefine the purpose of his life,” Pine says. “He’s the tragicomic antihero. When you meet him, he is at rock

IT WAS ONE OF THE SCARIEST, MOST HAUNTING STORIES I’VE EVER HEARD ONCE I GOT INTO WHO GEORGE HODEL WAS. — Patty Jenkins

bottom, but I always like to find the humor in someone or, at least, the self-awareness that he’s got some life left in him. Even in those darkest, darkest moments, Jay is really funny.” Pine blazingly infuses his charisma into this role and ultimately leaves viewers desperately wanting to see Jay get out of his coked-up trashy beat and find redemption and help Fauna. Every episode leaves you with more questions and pulls you deeper into this creepy, mysterious, unbelievable world that — remember — was actually inspired by true events. You won’t find a more captivating story. Jenkins concludes in saying she hopes viewers will walk away believing, “Wow, that’s TNT, an incredible story and what an unbelievable, Mondays spiritually evolved person came out of that beginning situation. What a beautiful story that is.” Jan. 28 5

ALL-STAR TRIBUTE

Musicians From Today Re-Create Elvis’ 1968 TV Comeback Performance. By Taylor Neumann

6

NBC, Sunday, Feb. 17

n honor of the 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s famous ’68 Comeback Special, NBC is delivering the two-hour Elvis AllStar Tribute, featuring music superstars re-creating that event, down to how the show is shot and what songs are sung. The executive producer, Ken Ehrlich, is an industry veteran. “I was a huge Elvis fan,” says Ehrlich. “A good friend, the attorney for the [Elvis] estate, came to us almost two years ago. … He said the anniversary was coming up and would we want to do a show?” Ehrlich, also the executive producer of the upcoming 2019 Grammy Awards, naturally said yes. In addition to the performances, the special will also include interviews from people originally involved in Elvis’ comeback, including the original director, Steve Binder, and Elvis’ ex-wife, Priscilla Presley. The show is hosted by country singer and The Voice funnyman Blake Shelton, who will also be singing a song or two himself. “Blake does ‘Suspicious Minds,’ but there’s another part of the show I don’t want to talk about too much,” says Ehrlich. The list of superstar singers includes Keith Urban, Ed Sheeran, John Legend, Carrie Underwood, Josh Groban and many more. Ehrlich also gave his own memories of watching the ’68 Comeback Special live. “I was

a fan from the beginning, [but] when he stopped having hit records, in the ’60s, and just made movies, I dumped him, you know? The Beatles came along, the Stones came along. Music changed. But when you first see him onstage in the ’68 show, my God, it’s amazing. It’s this presence. From the first moment, it’s electric. This was the peak vocally, and he just looked incredible [in his] black leather jacket.” The hardest part of the 1968 special to re-create was the style of filming used, called “in the round,” where cameras move around the stage. “In 1968, they made a very conscious effort to hide the cameras. We don’t do that much anymore. People are so used to seeing these things that when you watch a concert show on television or even on some of the awards shows, you’re conscious of the cameras.” This style of filming also encourages a stronger bond with the audience. “The few hundred people that were lucky enough to come to it when we shot it walked out saying they had never seen anything quite like this. … I don’t care if you’re watching it on your phone or on an 85-inch screen, if you’re watching music, you only see it from the front. With this show, because it’s 360 degrees, because it is in the round, you really feel like you’re a part of it. You really feel as though you are there.”
