Kristin Chenoweth Dazzles In New Hallmark Original Movie “A Christmas Love Story”

Gone is the pomp and pageantry of the 98-year-old Miss America competition you probably grew up watching, with those infamous swimsuit struts and judging primarily centered around a woman’s physical appearance. In this new era, coined Miss America 2.0, the competition puts intelligence and talent at the forefront, showering winners with a multitude of scholarship and philanthropic opportunities. New York’s Nia Franklin was crowned Miss America in September 2018 and was the first candidate to win under the organization’s new direction. “My year has meant so much to me,” tells Franklin. “I was the first Miss America 2.0, so I’ll be able to say that for the rest of my life.” Franklin was in grad school at the time struggling with debt when she first considered the Miss America organization for its scholarship opportunities. In three short years, she worked her way through area competitions for her chance at the title. To win, Franklin shares, contestants have to focus on “how you speak, how intelligent you are, how relatable you are to other people, and obviously talent.” Talent is 50% of the preliminary scoring, and for Franklin — an amazingly gifted opera singer, composer and writer — it was her golden ticket. “People are just fascinated with opera. When you’re young and you sing opera — a black woman that sings opera — it’s different. People don’t expect that, and it’s just amazing to be able to go outside of the box. I think that’s what Miss America 2.0 is. It’s not something that’s cookie cutter or you have to do it this way. It shows that you can be anything you want to be.” For Franklin, she’s proving just that. She plans to release new music in 2020 and continue her work at the organization she founded, Compose Her (composeher.org), which is dedicated to supporting, encouraging and highlighting female composers and musicians. On Dec. 19, NBC will air live The 2020 Miss America Competition from the Mohegan Sun casino and resort in Connecticut. — Barb Oates

Tim Conway (85) Born: Dec. 15, 1933;

Died: March 4, 2019 Luke Perry was as cool onscreen as he was kind off. The Ohio native, born Coy Luther Perry III, rocketed to megafame in 1990 as Beverly Hills, 90210’s ’s Byron-reading alcoholic bad boy Dylan McKay, helping to turn the fledgling FOX network into the epicenter of a pop-culture phenomenon. Trading cards, magazine covers, pillowcases — you name it and Perry’s face was probably on it. Fans freaked out over his effortless sex appeal and sideburns, and his on-camera chemistry with Shannen Doherty’s Brenda gave 90210 a Richard Burton-Elizabeth Taylor heat that still has a generation divided over whether Dylan belonged with Brenda or Kelly (Jennie Garth). He remained with the primetime soap through Season 6, then returned in 1998 for its last two years. Perry — who died surrounded by loved ones on March 4 at age 52 after suffering a massive stroke in Los Angeles — never lost his appreciation for the career-making character. He followed his breakout with grittier roles, including Oz’s ’s predatory professional surfing Rev. Jeremiah Cloutier and John From Cincinnati’s manager Linc Stark. Perry returned to series television in 2017 as Riverdale’s Fred Andrews, which he considered more of an honor than a job. “I feel really fortunate to get to do this,” he said at the time. “When you’ve lost sight of that, that’s when you get actors who just have a real head problem. Luke Perry (52) Born: Oct. 11, 1966;

Died: May 14, 2019 It’s easy to love any clown who makes us laugh, but there’s a special place in our hearts for the rare comedian who causes his fellow professionals to crack up. And no one mastered that particular art with more finesse than Tim Conway, whose bumbling persona masked a wickedly sharp improvisational wit. Conway, who died May 14 at age 85, suffering complications from a brain disorder, won four of nine Emmys for his work (including one for writing) on the legendary sketch classic The Carol Burnett Show, where he regularly joined the ensemble as a guest star before becoming a full-time cast member late in the show’s 11-season run. But the variety show wasn’t Conway’s first shot at stardom. He had already proved his worth as a reliable scene-stealer in his breakthrough role of klutzy Ensign Charles Palmer on the hit 1962-66 military sitcom McHale’s Navy opposite Ernest Borgnine. Conway was content to be a sidesplitting second banana, earning guest-actor Emmys for roles on Coach and 30 Rock, and he revealed to the Archive of American Television in a 2004 interview, “I would much rather stand in the background and make small funny things than be up at the head of the class.” And yet he headlined two short-lived shows, starred as an inept Texas Ranger on Rango for a half season on ABC in 1967 and infamously guest-hosted ABC’s 1969 Laugh-In knockoff, Turn-On, which was canceled on its opening night. All of which may account for why he once had a license plate that read “13 WKS.” That humility served him well in a long career that included the diminutive title character in the popular video series Dorf and voicing SpongeBob SquarePants’ Barnacle Boy (sidekick to Borgnine’s Mermaid Man). — Matt Roush

Born: April 3, 1922; Died: May 13, 2019 Que será, será. The lilting, Oscarwinning tune that became Doris Day’s signature (and her sitcom’s theme song) immediately conjures the memory of the adored Cincinnati songbird, who became a top box-office star in the 1960s. Day, who died of pneumonia at age 97, had a silky voice and a sunny personality, endearing her to generations even when critics underrated her talent by mocking her wholesome image. “It’s so ludicrous,” she griped in a 1969 interview. “I don’t even like apple pie.” A year earlier, Day had learned upon the death of her manager husband Martin Melcher that he had squandered her fortune and left her in debt. She turned to TV for the money, and The Doris Day Show (1968-73) became another milestone in her career. Her character, Doris Martin, evolved from a widowed mother living on a ranch to a single career woman in San Francisco, echoing the working-woman roles from her popular rom-com films with Rock Hudson. (She reunited with Hudson in 1985, embracing her ailing costar, who was dying of AIDS, on Doris Day’s Best Friends, a cable series demonstrating her love for animals.) — Matt Roush

Born: Aug. 22, 1939; Died: Aug. 30, 2019 It’s hard to remember a time when we weren’t rooting for Valerie Harper. It began in the ’70s, when she played Ken Kercheval wisecracking Rhoda Morgenstern, the brash and brassy (83) sidekick to winsome Mary Richards in the first four seasons of the Born: July 15, 1935; legendary Mary Tyler Moore Show. We already knew we loved Died: April 21, 2019 Mary, but we quickly came to worship Rhoda for her feisty and selfdeprecating wit. This beacon of independent feminism won us over Every great TV villain the moment she considered a piece of candy and quipped: “I don’t needs a pestersome know why I’m putting this in my mouth. I should just apply it directly foil — and few were to my hips.” Who was she kidding? Rhoda was a catch, the kind of as memorable as fearlessly funny friend anyone would be lucky to have. And Harper, who Dallas’ hapless died at age 80 after a long battle with cancer, was an instant TV star. Cliff Barnes, She won four Emmys as Rhoda: three as supporting actress and one as the perennial thorn in J.R. Ewing’s (Larry lead in the Rhoda spinoff, which sent the character back to New York and Hagman) side. Ken Kercheval, who died at into a whirlwind romance with a guy called Joe (David Groh). Their wedding age 83, played Barnes throughout the hit was a ratings blockbuster, and while the marriage eventually fell apart, Rhoda primetime serial’s entire 1978-91 run on — and Harper — maintained her scrappy appeal. For a generation of women CBS. Kercheval brought a resilient humor who came of age in the social revolutions of that era, Rhoda was a hero. And to the character, returning to the part while Harper’s TV career was not without blemish — after an embarrassing for TNT’s 2012-14 revival. Cliff Barnes contract dispute, she was fired from an ’80s sitcom that bore her name (the was Kercheval’s most notable role, show went on, erasing “Valerie” from its title) — the actress once again emerged but he also spent years on daytime as a role model when she went public with her crusade against terminal brain soaps (as Dr. Nick Hunter on Search cancer in 2013. Mere months after her diagnosis, she bravely tempted fate and for Tomorrow), was a frequent thrilled her fans by joining the cast of the grueling competition Dancing With the guest star in primetime series and Stars. She may not have won the trophy, but once again Harper earned our respect appeared in the Oscar-winning and admiration with her pluck, charm and drive. Peter Fonda (79) Born: Feb. 23, 1940; Died: Aug. 16, 2019 Peter Fonda did not simply rely on the famous Hollywood surname of his father — legendary actor Henry Fonda — for his success, but rather made a name for himself as an actor and filmmaker. After appearing in some lesser-known counterculture films for producer Roger Corman in the 1960s, Fonda instantly became part of Hollywood history as producer, cowriter and costar of the iconic road movie drama Easy Rider (1969). The film netted Fonda a shared Oscar nomination for its screenplay, helped usher in the era of New Hollywood filmmaking and remains a landmark symbol of the 1960s counterculture. He didn’t find wide acclaim again until 1997, when he starred in the drama Ulee’s Gold, which earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination. He died at age 79 from respiratory failure caused by lung cancer. – Jeff Pfeiffer

The role earned her two Emmy nominations, which were followed by three more from 2003 to 2005 for her guest role as Robert Barone’s mother-in-law Pat on Everybody Loves Raymond.

Born: July 5, 1929; Died: Feb. 23, 2019 She may never have been the boss, but when it came to comedy, Katherine Helmond commanded attention — first in the 1970s on the groundbreaking Soap, where her role as dithery socialite Jessica Tate earned her four of her seven Emmy nominations. In the ’80s, she was twice nominated over eight seasons as Mona, the man-hungry mother of Judith Light’s Angela on the hit sitcom Who’s the Boss? (Her seventh nod was in 2002 for playing Patricia Heaton’s mom in a recurring role on Everybody Loves Raymond.) Helmond, who died at age 89 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, also had success in theater, with a Tony nomination, and movies, most memorably as the plastic surgery fanatic in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. – Matt Roush

Christmas With the Tabernacle Choir Featuring Kristin Chenoweth

In PBS’ 16th annual installment of the Tabernacle Choir’s holiday performance, Emmy and Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth performs holiday hits and classics including “Mary, Did You Know?” and “We Need a Little Christmas” from Mame. Chenoweth shares that the annual event is among the three TV specials she always watched as a child, along with the Miss America pageant and the Tony Awards. She says, “This Christmas concert is part of my history, part of my DNA, and it was a bucket list item of mine for a long time, so I am very honored and grateful for this experience.” Premieres on PBS Dec. 16

Guy Pearce (L.A. Conﬁdential) stars as Ebenezer Scrooge and Andy Serkis (Black Panther) is the Ghost of Christmas Past in this adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic. Pearce describes this version of Scrooge’s path to redemption as “darker” and more of a “forensic” exploration into how the miser’s soul got to such a bad place.
