On Aug. 9, ABC presents its annual WE Day broadcast, where entertainment’s biggest names — including Chance the Rapper, Selena Gomez, Mahershala Ali, Natalie Portman, Bill Nye, Meghan Trainor, Joe Jonas and Lilly Singh — gather to celebrate young people who are making positive impacts in local and global causes. The hourlong special is part of a worldwide schoolbased movement that encourages young people to become engaged in philanthropic endeavors. “Our mission is to make doing good doable,” explains WE cofounder Craig Kielburger, who started the organization almost 25 years ago when he was 12 years old. “When you look at the world today, there’s a lot of problems, and we all know that, but where do you start? Our organization is meant to make it easy for kids and families to get involved.” The WE curriculum is used by over 4 million students worldwide and leads to more than 10 million hours of volunteerism per year. “By doing this service, students actually earn their ticket to come to WE Day,” explains Kielburger. “WE Day is the reward.” Over 200,000 young people earn this opportunity and attend a WE Day celebration in one of 20 cities around the U.S., the U.K. and Canada. WE Day California, the source of this year’s broadcast, was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and featured inspiring stories about young people, as well as celebrity-packed performances and speeches. Kielburger also teases that Martin Sheen and Henry Winkler appear in the special’s hilarious opening skit.

The Righteous Gemstones

Pray For Us All For Loving HBO’s Newest Family — The Gemstones. By Barb Oates

You won’t realize how much you actually missed former Eastbound & Down star and co-creator Danny McBride until you see him in his newest HBO laugher, The Righteous Gemstones, where he serves as star, executive producer, creator, writer and director. The ridiculously hilarious nine-episode satire follows the world-famous televangelist family the Gemstones, who have a long history of deviance and greed, mixed in with some occasional charitable work. We first meet the megachurch’s three frontmen — family patriarch Eli Gemstone (John Goodman) and his two sons Jesse (McBride) and Kelvin (Pitch Perfect’s Adam Devine) — at a massive baptism in China where the bumbling brothers are arguing over protocol. “Everybody in your line keeps getting water up their nose,” Jesse nags at Kelvin. It’s a petty criticism as the peaceful water pool they were using quickly turns into hysteria — it appears someone intentionally triggered the massive wave generator. When the threesome return home from that fiasco, we see just how obscenely wealthy these Gemstones are — private white jets (named The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit), a family theme park, gargantuan mansions — and then we get to meet the rest of their precious family. Turns out the brothers have a sister, Judy (Vice Principals’ Edi Patterson!), and they’re not too happy about her or her “boring ass” fiancé (Drunk History’s Tim Baltz). Evil temptations and actions surround these befuddled morons, but it only took one episode to convert us into devoted followers of The Righteous Gemstones.

V.C. Andrews’ Book to Screen Event

Bestselling author V.C. Andrews’ Casteel series comes to TV in a dramatic five-part saga that follows tortured yet triumphant heroine Heaven Casteel as she fights to rise above her family’s cursed past. Premieres on Lifetime

Heaven, July 27 This first film introduces the Casteel family and oldest daughter Heaven (Annalise Basso), who is determined to rise above her impoverished circumstances and redeem her family’s tarnished name. “Heaven’s journey is wrought with so many challenges,” says Basso. “That is how all great heroines are born.” Also stars Julie Benz and Chris McNally.

Dark Angel, Aug. 3 Heaven moves to Boston to begin a new life but discovers that even the rich have their dark family secrets. “I empathize with Heaven wanting to know what true love is, but because she’s so misguided, she’s easily taken advantage of by many of the male characters,” Basso tells. Jason Priestley and Kelly Rutherford also star.

Fallen Hearts, Aug. 10

Heaven’s daughter is whisked away to Farthinggale Manor and discovers the truth about her family. Melrose Place’s Daphne Zuniga joins Priestley and the rest of the cast, which includes Lizzie Boys and Johannah Newmarch.

Web of Dreams, Aug. 24 The final film brings Heaven’s life full circle as it reveals the story of her mother, Leigh. This film stars Jennifer Laporte, Max Lloyd-Jones, Cindy Busby and Tim Donadt. 6
