FX’s Fosse/Verdon explores the romantic and creative partnership between the iconic choreographer Bob Fosse, played by Sam Rockwell, and legendary dancer Gwen Verdon, played by Michelle Williams. LES MISÉRABLES

A More Down-To-Earth – And Song-Free – Adaptation Of The Classic. By Jeff Pfeiffer

“‘Can you hear the people sing? No, we can’t.’” Actor Dominic West (The Affair) jokingly recalled how some viewers in Britain initially reacted to the TV series adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic 1862 novel Les Misérables that premiered there in December. As he spoke with a small scrum of reporters at a press conference, West explained the disappointment some expressed on social media that the series was a straight-up dramatic adaptation of the book and did not, in fact, feature any of the singing (including the famous tune “Do You Hear the People Sing?”) spotlighted in the beloved stage musical. “It was really interesting reading the reviews and the [tweets],” West added. “For the first episode, [people were wondering], ‘Where are the songs?’ … But by Episode 2, they were with us.” So be aware that the six-part series that makes its U.S. debut as part of PBS’ Masterpiece franchise this month is a nonmusical version, although that in no way takes away from the fact that it is a beautiful, amazingly acted and dramatic tale. The saga spans events and follows characters on both an epic and an intimate scale as it progresses from the 1815 Battle of Waterloo to the 1832 Paris Uprising. West plays Jean Valjean, the most famous fugitive in literature (sentenced to 19 years of hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread), alongside David Oyelowo (Selma) as Valjean’s obsessively relentless pursuer, Javert. The incredible cast also includes Lily Collins, Ellie Bamber, Olivia Colman, David Bradley and Derek Jacobi. Hugo’s novel is huge — well over 1,000 pages — and probably as intimidating to screenwriters as it may be to casual readers. So, when it came to condensing and writing this adaptation, producers went to the master: Andrew Davies, who has penned a number of scripts based on literary classics, most recently taking on Leo Tolstoy’s War & Peace, another massive doorstop of a book, for a 2016 series. “People often say to me, or to actors generally, ‘How do you learn all those lines?’” Oyelowo told us. “I would say the same thing to Andrew Davies —

PBS, Sundays beginning April 14 Stream on pbs.org 6

how do you get all those words and thoughts from this giant novel and boil it down to a containable amount of episodic television? I just don’t know how he does it, but I’m very happy to be a beneficiary of him doing it.” Of course, even if there had been any inkling at the start of the project that this might be a musical adaptation, Davies’ involvement would have certainly quashed that notion. The writer did not hold anything back when he told reporters, with the enviable candor of a man in his 80s, “I hated the musical. I just wanted to rescue this great book from that pathetic [adaptation].” Whether the story of Les Misérables needed “rescuing” from the hummable stage hit is a question for another time. But there is no denying that this series is certainly a different, more gritty and real and less fanciful version that quite effectively captures the mood and backdrop of the story’s time — not to mention our own. And that was something that Oyelowo, who also serves as an executive producer, was trying for. “It was one of the things we discussed very early on in relation to reading the book,” the actor said. “I love the musical, but by virtue of it being a musical, there’s something, I guess, more sanitized about it, just because there’s something a bit more fantastical about a musical. “What we wanted to do with this, as a miniseries, is to really get to the underbelly of the story, and that was in every sense — with the characters, with the setting, with the clothes, with the costume, with the makeup. Everything about it should feel very lived in, and that was also because we wanted it to really resonate with the times we are living in, because that surely is the only reason to do yet another adaptation of Les Misérables.”
