WORKOUT WEEKLY

Life is back at Stockport fitness centres STOCKPORT’S Life Leisure centres are thriving once again as they welcome members back to indoor classes, health and thermal suites. The Leisure provider, which runs 12 fitness centres across the town, shut for the majority of the year due to COVID restrictions. While the gym was able to re-open on a restricted basis in April, indoor classes such a spinning and Zumba have been out of action – until now. Member Nina Westwell was among the first to return for the first indoor Zumba Tone class of the year at Houldsworth Village, led by Instructor Hayley Ellison. She said: “This is my first time back at Life Leisure in almost 12 months. It was amazing to be back with great instructors that make you feel great and encourage you at every step of your fitness journey. I’m feeling great!” As well as Zumba, members can also now take part in adults indoor sports, aqua, spinning and body pump, marking the end of outdoor and online classes. Michaela Pennington, Group CEO of Life Leisure, said: “We are delighted that the rest of our much-loved facilities are back open again for use. We’ve been able to continue some classes online and outdoors, but there’s nothing quite like getting back into the fitness studio and having a good workout with pals. “It’s been a tough year, so I think there’s a lot of people who have been counting down the days until they could relax in

Glad to be back: Nina Westwell, 6th from the left, joins fellow members in Reddish for the first indoor Zumba session of the year the saunas and jacuzzi too!” Life Leisure’s health suites at Grand Central and Hazel Grove are now open to guests as well as the saunas at both Stockport’s Sports Village and Cheadle. To monitor capacity levels and ensure members can social distance, access to the health suites at Hazel Grove and Grand Central must be pre-booked via

members’ online accounts. There is no need to pre-book saunas at Stockport Sports Village and Cheadle, however there will be a strict maximum capacity of two people. All gym and swim visits must be booked online, and where possible, members are encouraged to come ‘activity ready’ to reduce the demand on

changing rooms while social distancing measures remain in place. All centres across Stockport are now open apart from Priestnall and Bramhall, which will open on June 7. The date for Dialstone is yet to be confirmed. For more information about classes go to https://www.lifeleisure.net/our-centres/

£5m boost for ReTrain to Retain scheme AS part of the one-year implementation plan of its Uniting the Movement strategy, Sport England has confirmed a plan to invest £5m of National Lottery money in a new and unique job retention and support package for sports and physical activity professionals. The ReTrain to Retain programme will provide tools, training and services to enable sector professionals to return to work safely and with confidence, providing opportunities for participation to return to pre-pandemic levels. It will be designed to support up to 25,000 sports and fitness coaches who have had to find work outside the sector during the coronavirus pandemic and will prioritise those working in areas of economic deprivation or supporting under-represented groups. The programme will aim to greatly reduce or eradicate many of the costs associated with restarting work for up to 5,000 self-employed professionals and micro-businesses. It will support unemployed individuals with access to training and skills, provide funding for professional accreditations and insurance, along with access to a wide range of additional resources.

The project consortium will work closely with more than 500 sector employers, enabling them to address skills shortages and funding the costs of essential training. Tara Dillon, CEO of CIMSPA, said: “ReTrain to Retain will be a major boost to the sport and physical activity workforce, enabling many thousands of professionals to stay in, or return to, the sector. “From sports coaches to personal trainers, swimming teachers and group exercise instructors, this workforce has a vital role in keeping the nation physically and mentally healthy as we emerge from Covid-19, and I am delighted that we are able to provide this service with support from Sport England.”

Tim Hollingsworth, Chief Executive of Sport England, said: “While it’s been fantastic to see people embrace the return and reopening of sport and physical activity, we must ensure that the sports and fitness professionals who make so much of that happen are supported in every way possible. “It has been an extremely tough year for this part of our workforce, and I am delighted we’re able to confirm this investment and this programme as part of our ongoing Covid-19 recovery work.” Full details of the ReTrain to Retain programme, along with information on how to apply for support, will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Youth sport is bouncing back ... AS the UK leisure industry reopens, sports course management software provider, CoursePro reports a sharp increase in the number of children returning to sports. In the period between 12th and 30th April 2021, Fitronics owned CoursePro saw over 229,000 children return to swimming pools, gymnastics floors, and playing fields in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, matching the prepandemic levels of 2019. The two-week period encompassing the reopening of leisure in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, saw over 153,000 sessions delivered. As facilities move to create a safer environment for all, Ross Harris, National Fitness Development Manager at Nuffield Health says: “Having delivered 10,000 swimming lessons to

more than 11,000 children during the reopening phase, the cleanliness of our facilities and the safety of the children participating in our sessions has always been our priority.” Nuffield Health’s Learn to Swim programme has enabled many children to participate in a much-needed and essential life skill. Harris continues: “Working with UKActive and Swim England on the framework for reopening gyms and swimming pools has informed our strategy to introduce robust plans to provide a safe environment and experience for our members. Introducing safety measures such as managing pool capacities via bookings and having instructors teach swimming lessons from poolside, are just a few examples of how we have adapted to increase safety.”

Meanwhile, independent gymnastics academy, Gymtastic, welcomed back 450 participants to their sites in Broxburn and Penicuik, Scotland. Former Scottish National Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Champion, Neil Robertson comments, “After another long closure, we were extremely excited to welcome our members back. It was fantastic to see the majority of them return, with only a handful of nonreturners. CoursePro, Regional Account Manager, Tom Doodson adds “This immediate bounce-back is testament to the hard work that operators have put in both pre and post lockdown to create covidsecure environments so that parents and their children can feel safe when returning to sporting activities.”
