New leisure centre welcomes first visitors SOUTH Somerset District Council has cut the ribbon on the newly built Chard Leisure Centre and officially celebrated the opening of South Somerset’s latest and most extensive leisure development. Built as part of The Chard Regeneration Project with an investment of £16.5 million, the new leisure centre will support active, healthy lives through the provision of a wide range of leisure facilities for all walks of life from families and seniors to competing athletes and casual gym-goers or swimmers. Dan Bennett, property and development project manager at South Somerset District Council, said: “It is fantastic to see the derelict Boden Mill site transformed into a thriving activity hub right in the heart of the community. “In addition to serving those who live and work in Chard, the facility is expected to attract footfall from neighbouring towns and villages, helping to drive the local economy. The two storey leisure centre, which occupies circ. 2,000 square metres, incorporates a 25-metre swimming pool and separate training pool with wet facilities served by a dedicated, spacious changing village; an indoor adventure play area, a fully equipped gym, a fitness studio, a group cycling studio, plus a
lounge and café. The site including a Changing Places facility, ensuring as many people can benefit from this significant investment in community provision. Procured and delivered via the UK Leisure Framework – managed by
Denbighshire Leisure Ltd – the project has been delivered by Alliance Leisure, supported by building contractor, Speller Metcalfe. Julia Goddard, senior development manager at Alliance Leisure, added: “Thanks to the dedication of our trusted
supply chain we have tackled any pandemic induced challenges head on and succeeded in delivering this project on time and under budget. “The new centre is stunning and is perfectly placed to become the heartbeat of the community, offering the population a safe, inspiring place to relax, meet friends and get active.” Works began on the build in December 2019 following several public consultations and will be managed by Freedom Leisure which is also contracted to manage three additional sites on behalf of South Somerset District Council – Wincanton Sports Centre Goldenstones leisure Centre and Westlands Sports and Fitness centre, Yeovil. Mark Hudgeon, regional director at Speller Metcalfe, added: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to hand over the keys to Chard Leisure Centre, which we know will provide both fantastic facilities and employment opportunities for local residents and visitors to the area. “Together the project team has worked tirelessly throughout the build – even with the challenge of a global pandemic – and we are extremely proud to see it open to the public.”
Operator reopens exercise referral scheme LOCAL authority leisure provider Everyone Active has reopened its essential exercise referral scheme, by joining forces with EXi, the NHSapproved exercise prescription app and data portal. The digital solution is based on the latest scientific evidence for safety and effectiveness to those suffering from any number of 23 long-term conditions including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, obesity and cancer. The EXi platform, backed by Sport England and ukactive, is a valuable tool in delivering exercise prescription. It has no barriers to participation and its digital format enables people to access it wherever and whenever
they want. The relaunch of the exercise referral scheme in August has led to a smoother medical to fitness referral process, working closely with local communities to slowly eradicate health inequality. This includes enabling those living with chronic conditions from low social economic and disadvantaged areas to access the right effective healthcare for their chronic conditions and comorbidities. A training protocol for Everyone Active employees has been implemented and delivered through EXi’s CPD training. More than 130 of Everyone Active staff are being trained by EXi’s experts, including Carron Manning, EXi’s co-
founder, physiotherapist and clinical director. “The EXi health experts presented information to help our physical activity teams understand how new digital platforms can complement our customer offering and improve the health and wellbeing outcomes in our communities,” said Ben Beevers, Everyone Active’s group development director “The evidence, research and data demonstrated by EXi, helped our teams to further understand the ways fitness, sport and leisure can work closer together with the health and social care sector. “This partnership has helped
strengthen our exercise referral scheme and enabled us to support a wider range of individuals suffering with health conditions.” The Everyone Active exercise referral scheme is open to anyone who has a pre-existing health risk condition or those at risk of health conditions through a non-active lifestyle. Individuals will be referred to Everyone Active through a GP, practice nurse or physiotherapist. After being referred to the scheme, participants will benefit from at least two sessions weekly, over a two to threemonth period. On completion of their programme, they can then benefit from 25 per cent discount on an Everyone Active membership.

How building a community can have an impact on the world By Leanne Smith
Leanne Smith
LOCKDOWN hit everyone pretty hard, especially in the fitness industry. With gyms, leisure centres and fitness classes shut down the whole world was left not knowing how they would stay fit, healthy and strong mentally and physically. As a personal trainer I felt like my world had ended. My income, social circle, safety net and mental health necessity had been taken away from me, and who knows how long for or what the future held? I knew I had to think on my feet and adapt in order to help all my clients and all of those people who use exercise and the community that is the gym to stay healthy and well. During lockdown the fitness industry became a huge online community of people doing live workouts, sharing tips to stay active, cooking at home and surviving the pandemic. People built online connections with those on the same journey as them, and people achieved goals that they never thought possible during such an uncertain time. Not only did my online clients remain active, make new friends online and survive three lockdowns, but they
also came together to raise more than £10,000 for local charities. During the lockdown I launched my online fitness community ‘The Lean With Leanne’ programme. I wanted to create an event that everyone could get involved with together virtually. No matter their age, fitness level, location or situation they could take part in an event that gave them a purpose and passion during lockdown. And that is how the Lean With Leanne Virtual 5 Mile event was born with the help of a very special charity The Lions Barber Collective. The event was simply to complete five
miles on February20 . Whether you run, jog, walk, push the pram or take the dog simply complete five miles to raise awareness for men’s mental health. The charity provides funding for barbers to learn communication skills and make connections with mental health services to offer support to their customers. The Lean With Leanne community decided that we wanted to raise awareness and as much money as possible for all our husbands, boyfriends, dads, uncles, brothers, friends and sons to help raise awareness for men’s mental health and to show them that as women we are here to help and support them no matter what. More than 50 girls took part from all over the UK and the USA and people took all of their family and pets along with them. Each person asked for sponsorship for their five miles and together we managed to raise an insane £10,000 for the charity. The event was not only a huge success for a local cause that is so important, but it shows just how building a community, whether it is online or in the gym, can benefit so many people. The fitness industry and personal

training has been focussed on the idea of 1-1 training for so long but the truth is there is safety in numbers. People looking to change their bodies, mindset, habits and health have a much higher chance of long-term success if they become part of a community. Introducing clients to a group of people that share their issues, problems, goals and aspirations helps them stay accountable, be inspired and motivated and feel supported in achieving their goals. Whether you have an online business or work on the gym floor there are so many ways you can build a community and offer your clients even more support. Open a Facebook group for all your clients to communicate with each other, start a group training class, organise annual events where everyone can meet up and socialise or set up a virtual charity event to make them feel part of something rewarding. The Lean With Leanne Virtual 5 Mile will be happening again in 2022 to help raise money for a local women’s centre and to raise awareness for domestic abuse. n Leanne Smith is a personal trainer at Winners 2000 in Paignton.

Russ Boaler, Ross McGuigan, Stephen Pearson, John Kenny, Dominic Bell, Hannah Bowler, Gareth Ball and Mark Mitchell were at the unveiling of the maps (left). The maps are on display at First House, Brinnington.
Community project puts town on the map RESIDENTS and organisations across Brinnington have helped design three maps to encourage residents to keep active and spend more time in their local area. The bespoke illustrations, which were unveiled during a launch event), are on display at First House in Brinnington and can also be downloaded via a QR code. All Brinnington residents have also received a free copy of the first map through their letterbox. It is hoped the maps will provide a visual guide for residents to encourage them to explore the area more. The first map includes local landmarks, the second highlights walking routes and ways to keep active, and the third
is a historical map of old buildings and landmarks in Brinnington. Ross McGuigan, active communities manager at Life Leisure, worked with the local community to facilitate the maps. He said: “When we asked residents for ideas of how we could encourage people to get moving more, everyone was very keen on something that would get people involved but also highlight everything Brinnington has to offer within the community. “One of the residents came up with the idea of having some maps and everyone loved it. People started talking about their favourite places and what buildings they remember from their childhood that are no longer there.
“It became such a talking point we thought it was something that would get other people interested too. “Supporting the local community is hugely important to us as Stockport’s local leisure provider, but we understand that doesn’t always mean accessing gym facilities and setting up sport sessions. The maps have already proved to be a useful local resource for residents and visitors looking for ways to explore Brinnington and get active, with local schools using them for classroom activities, and residents and holiday clubs using them for walking activities and trails. We hope the community continues to embrace the maps in lots of exciting ways.”
The idea for the maps came from the That Counts in Brinnington Forum, a focus group made up of residents, Life Leisure, Brinnington Big Local, Transport for Greater Manchester and more local organisations. This is part of a funded programme through Sport England called the Local Pilot, led by Stockport Council. Speaking after the new maps were unveiled, John Kenny, chair of Brinnington Big Local, said: “These maps are just fantastic. We really hope they will provide something for everyone, whether that’s families finding new cycling routes or older adults using them to reminisce and take a walk through some old haunts.”

How 3-1-5 Health Club is thriving and is set to open several new locations BY leveraging everything the all-in-one ClubWise club management solution has to offer, 3-1-5 Health Club were able to optimise member engagement across their growing membership base and expedite club growth.
“The ClubWise member app takes a lot of pressure off our reception team,” said Deena. “With 4,500+ members, it’s essential that people can book their own classes in their own time.” Implementing flexible software to streamline club management tasks The ClubWise staff facing app also proved invaluable for her and her team on this front, as it allows the team to perform tasks on the go, making them visible to members rather than being stuck behind a desk. With the staff app being fully loaded with the full suite of session management features, staff are able to book members into classes, add them to a waiting list, cancel their booking and take payment for chargeable classes, all on the go.
Background With approximately 4,500 club members and 1,600 swim school children frequenting their 60,000-square foot facility, 3-1-5 Health Club is one of the largest privately-owned full-service clubs in the UK. As a family-run club, 3-1-5 Health Club takes pride in getting to know as many members as possible — their names, habits, likes, dislikes, and fitness goals — via regular and frequent communication. It is these efforts that allow 3-1-5 Health Club to deliver a high level of customised service. The problem Inadequate member communication Before she discovered ClubWise, 3-1-5 Health Club general manager Deena Gillan went through several different club management systems that did not meet their member engagement needs. Their first system offered no means of communicating with members directly, leaving them unable to effectively market new services, recommend packages, build strong client relationships, or cultivate member loyalty. Their second club management system limited them to emails and text messages that could be sent on an as-needed basis. Since they were unable to automate member communications, large campaigns would require staff to send them from the system manually. The inability to effectively communicate with members at scale regularly proved to be a significant issue. “Holidays or days off didn’t matter,” Deena lamented. “I was constantly tied to the system.” Time-consuming administrative tasks Another challenge 3-1-5 Health Club faced preClubWise was floor staff being bogged down by admin duties. Team members were stuck behind the desk performing tasks such as booking members for classes and checking them into facilities. Deena quickly recognised that as a full-service club with 4,500+ members, having the front-of-house team tied up with administrative work hindered their ability to interact with and support members elsewhere on the floor. She knew they needed an alternative system to streamline those tasks and free up club staff to build those all-important relationships with members. The solution Automating communications to increase member engagement Using ClubWise’s Campaign Manager feature, 3-1-
5 Health Club has been able to automate member communication and increase engagement starting from sign-up. “The integrated Campaign Manager tool in ClubWise is great, as it allows me to create all my emails for the month and then set them up ready to go in advance,” said Deena. “I can then forget about them and concentrate on what I need to be doing each day.” Thanks to this “set and forget feature,” instead of being on call to send emails during a campaign, the 3-1-5 Health Club team can rest assured all important marketing communications have been set. They’re also able to frontload new member engagement— increasing lifetime member value and retention with the automated CRM programme, which automatically sends out targeted communications to members within their first three months, detailing what their membership includes and how they can best use it to meet and surpass their fitness goals. Optimising engagement with the ClubWise Member App Along with automated email campaigns, Deena has credited the ClubWise Member App with allowing 3-1-5 Health Club to maintain, recover and eventually boost retention during and after the Covid lockdowns. By keeping in constant communication with their members, they were able to retain value in their membership offerings and keep members engaged (and willing to continue paying membership fees) while stuck at home. The ClubWise Member app has also been instrumental in freeing up club staff to meet, greet and get to know members as it provides the ability for members to handle their own bookings.
The results Full Covid losses recovered by Christmas 2020 By using ClubWise to automate member communications, put the power of booking in their hands and maintain engagement throughout and postlockdown, 3-1-5 Health Club was able to replace all of its members lost during the pandemic by the end of 2020. The software enabled them to adapt so well to member needs, comfort levels, and safety standards that the following lockdowns saw no significant loss for them. Deena credits ClubWise as an integral part of 3-15 Health Club’s ongoing success throughout the pandemic. She said: “I believe we were successful throughout lockdown because we kept in constant communication with our members using the ClubWise Campaign Manager tool and FitSense Member App. “We are currently sitting at our highest levels of members, swim school swimmers, and have continued to maintain the asset value of the club.” The future Opening new club sites with the help of ClubWise Thanks to their hard work and streamlined club management, 3-1-5 Health Club is now in a position to expand the brand. They’ve set their sights on opening an additional four or five clubs in the next year. Deena says they will be using ClubWise, and especially the member app, to ensure new members are fully versed in what their club has to offer. She believes the more they can encourage members to use the app, the more active and engaged with the club they will be. “To anyone considering setting up a club or moving providers, I would say choose ClubWise,” said Deena. “We have tried and tested a few systems over the years and have found ClubWise to be the best there is.” To find out more visit www.clubwise.com or email sales@clubwise.com

Guide launched for operators to support more women and girls to be active ukactive and Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign have joined forces to publish a practical guide filled with fresh insight, guidance and tangible solutions to support fitness and leisure operators in getting more women and girls active within their facilities. The guide, called ‘How to improve your services for women and girls: As told by the 51%’, is designed to help gyms and leisure facilities to reduce the barriers experienced by many women and girls who would like to be more active – with the title reflecting the fact that women make up over half of the population. The work forms part of a shared ambition proposed by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, between ukactive, the Government and its agencies, to grow the membership of these facilities by more than five million people by the end of the decade. Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “We have listened closely to the views of women and girls about how they feel using our nation’s gyms and leisure centres. “We know how popular fitness activities can be among women and girls, but there is a huge opportunity for our sector’s facilities to engage many more, as part of our shared ambition with the Government to reach five million new members this decade. “Reducing the barriers to female participation is a fundamental challenge for our sector, with our research showing clear demand from more women and girls to be able to enjoy these facilities. “We are proud to partner with Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign to produce this practical guide for our members, which we believe will be a crucial tool to help improve their services
Huw Edwards for women and girls.” Before the pandemic, fitness-based activities were a major contributor to female participation in physical activity. Sport England’s Active Lives Survey 2019 showed that 21 per cent of women and girls aged 16 and over had taken part in fitness classes at least twice in the previous 28 days. It also showed rising demand, with a 1.6 per cent rise between 2018-2019 in women and girls taking part in weights session at least twice in the previous 28 days. In September this year a survey of 2,000 women and girls by Sport England and Savanta ComRes showed a desire from women to do more physical activity, with 57 per cent of women stating that they intend to do more
physical activity, compared to 44 per cent of men – highlighting a huge opportunity for providers to cater to this demand and audience. To support the development of the new guide, ukactive and This Girl Can conducted a bespoke survey with 1,030 women and girls over 16, alongside a series of focus groups. They found that while many women and girls do positively engage in sport and physical activity within gyms and leisure facilities, many others do not, for a range of reasons. The guide, which has been welcomed by leading fitness operators, includes practical guidance and checklists to help improve the engagement, experience and confidence of women and girls using gyms and leisure facilities. It features advice on how to improve online communication and messaging to women to reduce anxiety around worries and fears they have about entering this setting, which ranges from where to go when they arrive, to how to perform specific exercises. The guide highlights the importance of increasing awareness of the overall health benefits of being active for a female audience and offers advice on robust policies to tackle personal safety fears. It also includes case studies from operators in both the public and private sector that have implemented successful strategies to improve services for women and girls, from staff training and interaction, to flexible programming, specialist equipment introductions, and commitments to personal safety. Findings from the research by ukactive and This Girl Can are highlighted within the new guide and in a detailed
supporting document, so that operators can act on the latest evidence from women and girls. The reasons cited for not being active in gyms and leisure facilities included: fear of judgement from both men and women; cost; worries about personal safety; knowledge about using equipment; and images used of women in marketing materials that are unrelatable and make women feel negative about themselves. Key survey findings: n Of all respondents, three in five women and girls (60 per cent) have visited a fitness or leisure centre at least once a month, within the past three years. n However, half (50 per cent) of the women that have experience of exercising in fitness and leisure centres in the past three years say they worry about being judged in this setting. n Of all respondents, more women say they are worried about being judged by other women (27 per cent) than by men (22 per cent). n Approaching half (45 per cent) of women say a member of staff showing them how to perform exercises/activities and use equipment would encourage them to participate in more activity within fitness and leisure centres. n 13 per cent of women say they worry about the risk or threat of sexual harassment, intimidation or embarrassment in this setting. n Cost is most often identified as a barrier to participation in exercise or physical activity within a fitness and leisure centre, with a third (32 per cent) of respondents who have attended a fitness and leisure centre in the past three years citing it is too expensive.
#DoingOurBit wins national healthcare award #DoingOurBit – a platform of more than 60 free workouts for NHS staff created by fitness industry leaders Active IQ, fibodo and Study Active alongside NHS keyworker Julie Davis – has won the Bevan Brittan Award for Wellbeing at the prestigious Healthcare People Management Association Awards. The most hotly contested category with 42 entries, the Bevan Brittan Award recognises organisations who can demonstrate how specific employee health, fitness or
wellbeing initiatives are making a positive impact on staff satisfaction, motivation, health or productivity. The HPMA judging panel said it was ‘blown away by the innovation and commitment’ of #DoingOurBit and were ‘keen to ensure that it could be sustained.’ They were also impressed by the ‘vision, energy and strength of communication’ of the platform. “I’m absolutely delighted to have #DoingOurBit recognised by the HPMA in this way and am particularly pleased that our success will remind people in the NHS about the opportunity offered to them by the platform,” said Julie Davis, deputy chief operating officer, NIHR Clinical Research Network West Midlands, who came up with the idea of offering free workouts to her colleagues and the wider NHS community when the pandemic first hit. “I would like to thank Active IQ, fibodo and Study Active for all their encouragement and help firstly in bringing #DoingOurBit to life and secondly in building and sustaining the platform. “While it launched in lockdown, our aim is to continue building and
growing #DoingOurBIt into the future.” #DoingOurBit launched in June 2020 to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and its 10,000 staff. While born out of necessity during lockdown, #DOB was recognised for its potential to support the wellbeing of the NHS into the future. New Trusts are still signing up with 105 now registered giving access to the free workouts to more than 600,000 NHS staff. Ultimately, #DOB is hoping to make the NHS more self-sufficient in terms of managing its own physical
activity. Its next stage is to recruit NHS employees as #DOB Champions to contribute more workouts to the platform and encourage colleagues to get involved. Each #DoingOurBit workout is unique with the PTs giving a personal message of thanks. Do you know the true value of your existing gym equipment?
13
Advertiser’s announcement
By Daniel Jones AT THIS time of year gym owners are busy trying to attract new customers. But it’s also time to focus on what you’ve already got. Worryingly most gym operators have no idea how much their equipment is worth or even when is the best time to buy new equipment and sell the old stuff. Many gym operators we speak to don’t have any idea what their assets are worth or when is the best time to buy new and sell old unwanted equipment. The truth – there is simply no science behind the right time to buy new equipment and sell the old. Why? The automotive market has had sophisticated data for years and consumers know the right time to trade-in their old car and upgrade to the newer, shiny model. Real-time residual values of your assets may seem like an overwhelming task because the data just isn’t readily available. The good news is we do it for you, and we make it simple. Pin-pointing the depreciated asset value of your equipment helps identify the sweet-spot of true cost of ownership. Therefore, recognising the right time to decide when to purchase new equipment and trade-in your old models.
A fact that gets more shocking when you discover that not knowing your fitness equipment’s value could be costing your business more than £25,000 in lost revenue over five years. Ongoing fitness equipment maintenance could be throwing good money after bad. WeBuyGymEquipment is a great free way to get an accurate residual value of your existing asset. This allows gym owners to make informed decisions when to upgrade their products. Understanding the true cost of ownership is critical and delivers true, live data so operators can
recognise the sweet-spot of decision making. Orbit4 is a new automated ecosystem that provides a true depreciated asset value during every step of the fitness asset journey. This accurate valuation is backed-up by WeBuyGymEquipment residual value data bank of 30,000 prices via 3,100 assets. December is an important time of year for gym equipment replacement or refurbishment and it’s a time to make sure that you have the edge over competition so that new potential members choose your gym. Knowing when to sell is key to being able to reinvest in your club. In the New Year your members need equipment that can withstand a pounding in the January rush. Kate Fearon, of FitnessCompared, said: “Too many clubs focus too heavily on new member recruitment in January which can really annoy the existing members who are their core longer term income. “Think about those loyal members whose wellness is more than just for Christmas, they need investment too. “You can save money by using an impartial comparison site like FitnessCompared where you really will get the best price for the best equipment for your facility.” n Daniel Jones is CEO of Orbit4.

We will train you and your staff at our academy in Stafford and this is backed up by online training, monthly bulletins, our franchise website and visits from our support team. No prior knowledge is necessary as we will teach you and your staff everything that you need to know. With extremely low start up costs, lack of finance need not hold you back. All about Gymophobics Starting way back in 2003, Gymophobics offers something different to conventional gyms. Members attend by appointment to avoid overcrowding and waiting for equipment. A traffic light system ensures that members can complete each workout in just 30 minutes. Following an in depth Induction each member receives a personal programme prescription and this is updated every three weeks. Their prescription includes home exercise and diet as well as their gym sessions and members receive VIP attention on every visit. Members visit their centre two or three times each week and can access more than 100 online sessions for the days when they don’t attend. Gymophobics is a ‘holistic’ facility
It is not uncommon for new centres to have enrolled more than 300 to 400 members in their first 12 months Attracting potential members through the door is down to marketing and new owners will be shown how to do this. Our franchisees Most of our franchisees had never owned a business before but have one thing in common. They all have the desire to be their own boss and all have an interest in helping women to be the best they can be. We look for someone with good communication skills who is prepared to work long hours initially to be successful. Franchisees come in all ages and from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicity. Following basic management training in person or via Zoom, a week is spent at our training academy in Stafford plus various one day courses. Online training is also provided. After the first year, franchisees and their staff attend one day refresher courses in Stafford. that places equal importance on diet, exercise and lifestyle. Weekly slimming classes are available to those who need them plus a home callisthenics and cardio prescription. Our ‘AIR’ operated equipment is much more popular with women than conventional weight machines as is the friendly communal atmosphere where members of all ages from teens to sixtyplus can meet and relax in a comfortable feminine environment Our members It is fair to say that most of our members are not conventional ‘gym bunnies’. Most would find a conventional gym intimidating. Most are non-exercisers when they first come to us and appreciate the VIP support we offer. It is a reflection of that support which
means that more than 70 per cent of new members continue into year two, which is more than double the retention rates in conventional gyms Many mothers introduce their teenage daughters to Gymophobics and our under 40 year old membership is now the highest it has ever been while older members far exceed the numbers who join conventional gyms owing to the personal attention that we provide More than half our members are in the 40-plus age category and more than 20 percent are above 60. Members pay a monthly subscription via direct debit for a contracted 12-month period and this is collected for you by a direct debit company. Most centres need no more than 150 members to cover their monthly costs which is usually achieved within the first six months of opening.
What does it cost to become a Gymophobics franchisee? So keen are we to recruit new franchisees that we want, we are prepared to support the right applicants financially. Our normal recruitment fees are already the lowest in the industry at £19,995 but we are offering to discount this to just £5,000 to attract the right people. Of course there will be costs involved in fitting out the premises but this will not usually exceed £5,000. Equipment is normally the main cost when opening your own gym but this will be included in your monthly licence fee as long as you Insure and maintain it throughout New franchisees will need a small marketing budget to promote their Centre on commencement.

22.7 million Brits were active on National Fitness Day, ukactive research reveals NATIONAL Fitness Day 2021 has smashed all records on its 10th anniversary, with the physical activity sector inspiring 22.67 million people to get active on the day, according to new figures from ukactive and Savanta ComRes. ukactive is now calling on all leaders across the political spectrum, and from the sport and physical activity sector, to fully back National Fitness Day in 2022 and beyond in what is a watershed moment for the campaign, and take it to an even bigger audience. The success of the campaign is built on mobilising grassroots support from ukactive members, community groups and the wider physical activity sector, to engage individuals, families and schools through free activities on the day– with figures for 2021 showing that it has gone from strength to strength. New figures show: n 22.67 million people were estimated to be active on National Fitness Day 2021 (up from 19.15 million 2020).
n 11.35 million children (up from 8.67 million in 2020) and 11.32 million adults (up from 10.45 million in 2020) were estimated to be active on National Fitness Day. n 4,365 free activities and events took place across the UK, either physically or online, according to the National Fitness Day Activity Finder, in addition to many more. n 18.26 million adults (an estimated 35 per cent of the population) said they were aware of National Fitness Day (an increase from 32 per cent in 2020). n 44.04 million people – the media reach of the 2021 campaign, through TV, radio and press coverage (up from 29.15 million in 2020). Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “These figures show the incredible impact of National Fitness Day and the power of our sector to reach millions of new people and really get the nation moving more. “National Fitness Day has grown to
become one of the most important annual events for the UK’s physical and mental health; representing far more than a single day of activity, it is now a powerful trigger that inspires change for people and is inclusive of all ages, abilities and background , throughout the year. “We want National Fitness Day 2022 to be even bigger, with more people getting active, so we are calling on everyone in the physical activity sector, as well as those in positions of political leadership, to join us in a united movement to get the nation moving.” The theme for National Fitness Day 2021, coordinated by ukactive in partnership with TRX Training ClubSM, was “Fitness Unites Us”, recognising the power of physical activity to unite the nation, particularly in light of the physical and mental health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Awareness of the day was supported by polling from ukactive which showed
that less than a third (27 per cent) of UK adults were as physically fit as they would like to be following the pandemic. National Fitness Day 2021 kicked off at London’s Jubilee Hall Gym, and was supported by the Department for Digital, Culture Media and Sport. Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston, Olympic diving gold medallist Matty Lee and Paralympic legend Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson met members of the public and joined a group exercise class hosted by TRX Training ClubSM. The campaign helped shine a spotlight on the essential role of fitness and leisure facilities, and providers, in supporting the nation’s physical and mental health, as well as its social fabric. This year marked the 10th anniversary of National Fitness Day. The campaign was founded by fitness operator énergie Fitness before being gifted to ukactive in 2014 to expand. National Fitness Day 2022 will take place on Wednesday September 21.
Operator powers up its gym floor training experience FITNESS First Germany has created a circuit of digital coaches on its gym floors to enable trainers to focus less on relaying instructions and more on delivering personal cues and motivating members. “Digital coaching is the next phase in gym floor group training,” said Martin Seibold, CEO LifeFit Group, owner of Fitness First Germany. “Group training has been central to our offer for many years and is still extremely popular with our members. “The recent move to provide digitally delivered exercise demonstrations at each workout station in a circuit helps ensure all participants are instructed to perform the correct technique, whilst freeing up the trainer to address individual participant needs, creating an environment that is geared towards goal attainment for each and every member.” The experience has been made possible through a partnership with the Netherlands based fitness innovator, FunXtion. Multiple screens (provided by FunXtion) are strategically positioned
in functional training spaces and are connected to the Virtual Player, a digital platform hosting thousands of professionally shot and perfectly executed video exercise demonstrations. The exercises featured can be programmed to run concurrently, creating a circuit of digital instructors
that provides every member with constant visual prompting. Martin added: “We never stand still. To maintain our position as an innovation forerunner, we are constantly assessing the market to ensure or offer remains relevant to the lives, expectations and needs of our members, whilst remaining
one step ahead of the competition. “This latest investment takes a popular training format and turbo-charges it, helping to maintain the interest and motivation of our members.” The roll out began during lockdown at the end of 2020 and will complete this month, giving all the brands’ members across 50+ clubs, access to the new experience. The Virtual Player and the multi screens are all fully custombranded, displaying Fitness Firsts own backgrounds, fonts and logo. Ernst De Neef, CEO of FunXtion, added: “Fitness First Germany has been sharing our content via their member app for a while, so all the exercise demonstrations displayed by the multi screens in the sites will already be familiar. “Competition in the market is fierce and it is important that brands constantly evaluate their offer and look for new ways to ‘delight’, ‘surprise’, ‘inspire’ and ‘engage’ members. “This is exactly what the integration of our Multiscreen, Virtual Player experience has delivered for Fitness First Germany.”

Increased exposure for partner clubs By Jamie Owens
I’VE spoken in my previous columns about Hussle’s collaboration with McDonalds earlier this year, which saw us offer a fitness-based prize as part its annual MONOPOLY promotion, played by more than seven million people. The deal gave McDonald’s customers the chance to win access to any of our 2,000+ partner health clubs and leisure centres, in a bid to test new marketing channels, widen the reach of the fitness industry and, ultimately, support ukactive’s goal to get more people, more active, more often. As mentioned previously, MONOPOLY at McDonald’s is one of the UK’s largest consumer marketing campaigns and it therefore presented a unique opportunity for our industry to reach a lot of people quickly, people we may never have reached otherwise. The initial results of the collaboration are now in, and I’m pleased to report we saw a 71 per cent increase in customer visits to gym listings on the Hussle platform – this is people viewing the details of a specific gym and reading about what they have to offer, which represents a significant increase in brand awareness for the gyms listed. What’s more, 87 per cent of customers were new to the marketplace, having never visited gyms through Hussle before. The McDonald’s campaign also had a big impact in diversifying the locations of customers – typically London and the
Jamie Owens South East are the regions that get the most customers through Hussle. Gyms in the North West of England were the biggest winners – the percentage of customers using the Hussle marketplace through McDonalds doubled from seven per cent to 14 per cent, while the West Midlands and North East of England saw comparable gains. Unsurprisingly, the average age of Hussle customers was lower through McDonald’s – dropping from a 2021 average of 33.5 years old to 28.7 years old, with slightly more females than males. This is also a big change from typical customers that usually use the Hussle platform, which is an average gender split of 64 per cent male to 36 per cent female.
Through McDonalds the split was 48 per cent male and 52 per cent female. Lastly, whilst independents still hold the lion’s share, the McDonalds campaign increased the 2021 average venue usage for budget gyms from four per cent to seven per cent, with independent gyms dropping from 29 per cent of customers to 22 per cent. Other venue types saw little difference in market share. McDonald’s might not be the first

Active IQ and Skillsfirst collaborate to offer new Wellbeing Package ACTIVE IQ and Skillsfirst have come together to create a unique Wellbeing Package to meet the growing demand from employers for staff to have both physical and social wellness skills. Both businesses excel as Awarding and End-Point Assessment Organisations and offer complementary qualifications and assessments. Active IQ is particularly strong in the leisure sector, while Skillsfirst is renowned for its functional and social skills portfolio. Working together, they seek to break down any barriers and create a set of qualifications that promote wellbeing in the workplace. “We believe our collaboration and bespoke Wellbeing Package has great potential to equip learners with a number of skills that are sought after in the workplace,” said Gavin Baxter, Active IQ business consultant. “We are increasingly aware that employers are looking for multi skill sets in the wellbeing field and anticipate a good level of interest in our joint offer alongside Skillsfirst. “It’s unusual perhaps to bring together two Awarding and End-point Assessment Organisations. “However, we are confident our complementary qualifications will enhance each other’s offering to benefit both employers and learners.” The new Wellbeing Package comprises eight qualifications: four each from Active IQ and Skillsfirst Active IQ is offering: n Active IQ Level 1 Award in Active, Healthy Living.
n Active IQ Level 2 Award in Understanding Nutrition, Performance and Healthy Eating. n Active IQ Level 2 Award in Alcohol Awareness. n Active IQ Level 2 Award in Smoking Awareness and Cessation. Skillsfirst is offering: n Skillsfirst Level 1 Certificate in Personal and Social Development. n Skillsfirst Level 1 Award in Ways to
Maintain Personal Well being. n Skillsfirst Level 1 Certificate in the Principles of Maintaining Personal Well-being at Work. n Skillsfirst Level 2 Certificate in LGBT Inclusion in the Workplace. The qualifications complement each other and dovetail nicely. Two or more can be studied in tandem thus maximising the learners’ opportunity to gain multiple skills in a
short space of time. Employers can ‘pick and mix’ any or all of the eight qualifications making the selection process flexible and accessible. The respective training centres for Active IQ and Skillsfirst simply need to undergo centre recognition from the other partner to enable their training providers to deliver the combination of qualifications. “Active IQ is the ideal partner for us as we share similar values and operate to the same high standards,” added Faye Moore, Skillsfirst head of business engagement. “This collaboration adds value to our respective customer bases and sits well in the current climate where individuals, employers and learners are increasingly invested in wellness. “Like Active IQ, we pride ourselves on our customer-focused and friendly approach and put the learners at the heart of everything we do. “I believe that by collaborating in this way, we can bring more options to learners while retaining that personal touch.” The Active IQ & Skillsfirst Wellbeing Package supports the growing demand for corporate responsibility by offering a range of social and interpersonal skills. It will appeal to health and wellbeing officers whose primary responsibility is to look after the health and wellbeing of their colleagues and staff. All the qualifications can be delivered face-to-face or in a blended model and meet the requirements of funding provision.
Get your equipment in shape for Gym-uary AS Christmas draws closer, it only means one thing for fitness operators – the January gym rush is just around the corner. It’s the most exciting time of the year – for gym owners. Year after year, resolutions are made and broken in this pivotal month. And they all revolve around one steadfast intent – to lose weight. As humans, we have a psychological need to be able to cast of past excesses and make a fresh start. So, when the festive period is over, most people feel like they’re ready to make a change for the better. And that’s where the popular saying “New Year, new me” comes in. As people set New Year’s resolutions to get in shape, exercise more, and just generally be healthier, they sign up for new gym memberships or head back to the gym with a long-forgotten membership. With thousands of people kick-starting their fitness journeys, you’ll inevitably have a new wave of eager gym newbies queueing up at your door. So, whether you’re a class-based studio, fitness franchise, or gym, it’s important to make sure you can ‘wow’ your new or returning members after the festive period is over.
This is the point when people feel like they’re ready to make a change for the better. To prepare for the influx of new members, it’s important to make sure that you stay on top of equipment maintenance. You want to avoid the scenario of showing around new members and having ‘out of order’ signs hanging from a treadmill, weight machine or cross trainer.
They’re a source of disappointment, and limit capacity for those who visit. Yet a maintenance sign suggests more than just a fault… it shows there’s a fault which hasn’t been rectified straight away. December is the time to whip your fitness equipment into shape. Getting your kit serviced should be your number one priority. Breakdowns result in frustration,
potential safety hazards and customer dissatisfaction. Breakdowns are a key cause of complaints. And quite right, too. Your members are paying for a service and they expect everything in their gym to be working as it should be. First impressions count. ServiceSport provide specialist gym equipment servicing along with replacement parts to reduce downtime and fix machines before the problems get worse. We have a dedicated service and repair team who can diagnose and fix issues on many different makes and models of commercial gym equipment. Getting your equipment serviced in time for the rush means that you will have taken the correct precautions, allowing your kit to start the new year just as freshly as your new members. As well as exact colour matching fabrics, ServiceSport offer embroidery and personalised text or logos to enhance your image and create unique branding for your gym. Time is short, prepare for January now by getting your gym equipment ready for the New Year’s crowd. Book in with the ServiceSport team today before it’s too late. Panatta Freeweight Special Super Leg Press 45° Dual System The Super Leg Press 45° Dual System is a specific machine to train the lower limbs that reproduces the pushing movement along a work surface inclined at 45°, thus being effective for strengthening the front, rear muscles of the thigh, and hip. The machine adopts the innovative “Dual System”, which splits the thrust platform by means of a special release lever. This process makes independent the movement between the two lower limbs and distributes the load in a symmetrical and balanced way on the left and right sides, deleting the possible muscular compensations that may occur during the exercise with normal Leg Presses with a single carriage. Thanks to this system, the new Panatta Leg Press allows several uses with multiple possibilities of training the lower limbs. n BOTH FEET EXECUTION (JOINTED PLATFORMS) The exercise performed on the press with the two platforms together, typical of common presses, allows high loads lifting and lends itself to maximal and submaximal strength work. n BOTH FEET EXECUTION CON WITH INDEPENDENT PLATFORMS By releasing the locking lever between the two push carriages, the load becomes independent between the two limbs with a particular involvement of the proprioception that stimulates motor control, rebalancing the strength of both lower limbs. n SINGLE FOOT EXECUTION WITH ONE PLATFORM It is possible to perform the thrust exercise with a single limb, for greater concentration and muscle isolation on the thighs and glutes. The single foot execution is used both in fitness to give greater muscular emphasis, and in the field of functional re-education to correct possible muscular asymmetries of the lower limbs by restoring levels of strength, power and coordination; n ALTERNATED FEET EXECUTION An alternating thrusting movement between the left and right limbs is possible, performed dynamically with a high execution speed, which is functional for sports training where strength, power, endurance and coordination must be developed together. Particular attention has also been paid to user safety, thanks to the easy start system with manually operated levers (independent between the right and left sides) and height-adjustable limit switches in three positions, also independent between the two sides.

Health club provider to open 10 gyms before end of year HEALTH club provider Anytime Fitness is set for a bumper finish to the year, with plans to open ten new health clubs before the end of 2021. All new clubs will be independently owned by franchisees, with locations spanning from Inverness to a first-ever club in Guernsey. Eight further sites across England are set to open before the end of December, taking Anytime Fitness’ club network in excess of 185 clubs across the UK and Ireland. This flurry of planned openings follows a buoyant recovery from Anytime Fitness UK after the reopening of indoor leisure
facilities in April, with close to a third of its clubs now exceeding their revenue numbers pre-March 2020. It has also experienced record interest in owning a health club, with new franchisee enquiries soaring by over 300 per cent this year. “It’s exciting to be able to look forward with so much positivity and see more ambitious entrepreneurs owning their own businesses,” said Ben Dixon, chief development officer at Anytime Fitness UK. “Demand for health club memberships has been consistent throughout the year and we’re delighted to soon be positively impacting the
health and wellbeing of even more local communities across the UK. “It’s testament to the hard work and patience of our franchisees and development team in navigating the numerous supply chain challenges and have this strong pipeline of openings in place.” “Opening a club in Guernsey shows the versatility of our model and it’s great to be able to reach another new market, after opening our first club in Jersey earlier this year. “These new clubs are being opened by a combination of new franchisees and existing club owners in our network
adding to their portfolio and scaling their investment with us. “Things are very much on the up again and ahead of what is traditionally our ‘golden quarter’ between January and March, we’re excited to be able to support more people across the UK with improving their health goals.” Anytime Fitness clubs are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provide members with safe and welcoming environments to achieve their health goals. Potential franchisees are supported by funding support from high street banks including Barclays, NatWest and Lloyd’s.
Saying yes to financing gyms

Success overseas and celebrating our differences By James McPherson
ACTIVE IQ has been making great waves abroad over the last 12 months, particularly in the Middle East. In Saudi Arabia, helping to train and recruit Saudi women instructors by working in partnership with Spectrum® Wellness for Women, the first Active IQ training provider in the Kingdom. We worked closely with Tracy Aldereyaane, VP at Spectrum, to develop resources that meet the needs of learners in the region to support teaching in the community and working with clients in local fitness facilities. Our role is not about simply exporting our qualifications but about adapting our materials and delivery. Working abroad requires us to listen,
learn and adapt our qualifications to ensure they meet the exact needs of the local market. A key learning from Spectrum, our first approved centre in Saudi Arabia, was the importance of translating our materials into Arabic. We took great care in the process of translation, working with an Egyptian translator and then a Saudi-based company to ensure we were translating for a wide variety of Arabic speaking countries. We decided to take local dialect into account, and developed an Egyptian translation and a formal Arabic translation of our course material to ensure the language was recognised
James McPherson
across the regions. Our external verifier then worked closely with a translator to quality-assure the work, ensuring Arabic learners are provided with the same opportunity as English-speaking learners. So far, we have translated three qualifications and attracted more than 450 candidates. Aside from getting the language right, practical and cultural considerations helped to ensure success, including removing any language barriers, observing and navigating cultural demands such as Ramadan and facilitating all-female training and gym access. At the end of October we attended
Dubai Active as an exhibitor and sponsor of the ‘Business and Buyer’s Lounge’, giving us the perfect platform to showcase our work and translated manuals. We received a very warm welcome and much appreciation of our work so far. The icing on the cake for our international team was winning the ‘Exporter of the Year’ at this year’s Federation of Awarding Bodies’ FAB awards. This award celebrates the success of an organisation’s exports and international business and we couldn’t be more proud to have our work recognised in this way. n James McPherson is commercial director at Active IQ.

Health and wellness content service launched THRIVEOLOGIE, a health and wellness company delivering digital health, fitness and wellbeing services and events to the corporate sector, has recently launched a health and wellness content service to support the leisure sector. In collaboration with their extensive team of experts, thriveologie has developed the White Label Wellness brand, providing platform integration or bespoke and off-the-shelf holistic wellness content packages across five pillars including, Movement and Exercise, Nutrition, Self-Improvement and Wellbeing, Rest and Recovery and Mental Health.
thriveologie’s aim is to support fitness and leisure operators in creating an alternative dialogue with both existing and potential new members. By focusing on health and wellbeing, rather than leading with a fitness focused message, which can often be a barrier to entry into the sector, operators can appeal to a wider demographic of customer. Caroline Richings and Helen Jaggar, the founders of thriveologie, said: “With gym membership numbers still recovering from the fallout of the Covid pandemic, and a global focus on the significance of optimal wellbeing for physical and mental
health, individuals are expecting more from leisure operators. “Using the same methods as in previous years to attract members, it is likely that operators will continue to only appeal to the same small percentage of gym goers. “White Label Wellness offers a powerful alternative communication tool, providing fitness and leisure operators with an opportunity to continue to motivate previous members to return with an improved proposition, as well as attracting an entirely new community of members that may otherwise not have been interested.”
They added: “Creating a variety of good quality, credible content to attract, engage and retain new customers can be a challenge when you may not have the internal resource or expertise. “thriveologie’s selection of wellness content packages can make consistent delivery of qualified wellness resources, easier for fitness and leisure operators, allowing them to customise and own the delivery of wellness content to generate greater engagement and brand equity.” To find out more visit www.thriveologie.co.uk/ whitelabelwellness
It’s time to get back to school WE always talk about how important it is to get that elusive 80 per cent of people moving within the fitness industry. “Doing so will grow the pie,” we hear. Yet, when it comes to the end of the month, it’s still all about traditional sales messages that haven’t yet resulted in many new people going to the gym for the first time. Yes, that’s a sweeping generalisation, but we still need to get better educated in what the majority of people are looking for. We need to be more honest with ourselves that, to date, we’ve not been doing a good enough job for a lot of people. However, in the face of inspiring change, what better place to look than the next generation of those taking part in physical activity than at school? How can we embrace positive change on a large enough scale to evolve a nation to move more? You remember the days of rope climbs under pressure? Early rugby mornings
with little guidance? Or walking to the outdoor pool with a surrounding fence that could collapse if someone shrieked too loud from the cold water shock? Those are long gone. Now, even the best education specialists in movement are getting a run for the money, as some schools around the country are giving us a lesson in why traditional physical education could be a thing of the past. Coombe Wood School in Croydon has created what it calls “Health Related Fitness” – a game changer in how physical activity is perceived in education and throughout life. “We are not a school that obsesses about sport,” said Jonathan Wilden, chief executive officer of Folio Education Trust. “We are a school that obsesses about movement, being healthy, and developing a passion for moving better, all the way through life.” This is the foundational thinking that’s going to make a difference in all our futures, and we need more of it.

Leisure retail – an income generating no-brainer “Blu Leisure works with leisure and hotel operators to build thriving retail hubs. “Our range of Blu and custombranded swimwear and fitness apparel, supported by complementary merchandise products creates a means of generating consistent revenue to bolster that all important bottom line. “Working with our well-established global network of suppliers, we design, manufacture and supply competitively priced, quality. “This creates the flexibility our retail partners need to be able to apply a significant mark-up, increasing the profit margin per item. “By way of an example, we sell our bestselling female swimsuit for £9.15 and recommend a retail price of £21.99. “Apply that mark-up or similar across an entire range and we are talking serious profit potential. “Our individual swimwear and leisure garments are manufactured to ensure they succeed as standalone products whilst also incorporating colour palettes so that, as a range, our products look great when
displayed together. “Ordering is also simple and efficient. Retail partners benefit from a secure online account. There is no minimum order and orders of any size placed by 11am are guaranteed next day delivery. “This means, our partners do not need to store high levels of stock on site, rather, they can just draw it down as and when required. “As an added bonus, we operate a sale or return policy so our operator partners only incur costs on the products they sell. “This means operators can commit to stocking retail shelves, safe in the knowledge that any unsold stock can be returned without financial penalty.” Blu Leisure has been operating since 2004, servicing a number of leisure, spa and hospitality partners. Earlier this year, the company was acquired by Taylor Made Designs and is now activity looking to welcome new retail partners.
