Darcey leads mass workout By Oliver Dyson
NOTHING but a dame would do to kick off this year’s National Fitness Day. Dame Darcey Bussell led a mass dance workout in the Guildhall Courtyard, in the heart of London, to celebrate the festivities. National Fitness Day celebrates the benefits and fun of physical activity across the country. Held on September 26, it saw gyms, leisure centres, instructors and clubs join in and host special events, classes and more. Dame Darcey said: “This isn’t just about one day though – we want to encourage more people to discover physical activities that they love all year round, whether it’s dancing with your kids in the kitchen, a brisk walk in the park, playing sport with your friends or a workout at the gym.” The big kick off was co-ordinated by ukactive, supported by AXA PPP healthcare and in partnership with Everyone Active and Les Mills.
Gymnast Max Whitlock, hurdler Colin Jackson and women’s hockey forward Alex Danson also turned up to share in the festivities, which included free classes taking place throughout the day. Guildhall was chosen as the launch location as part of AXA’s Flying Start campaign to get workers exercising to kick start their day. ukactive CEO Steven Ward said: “National Fitness Day represents a fantastic opportunity for the physical activity sector to spread the fun of fitness by engaging people who are usually less active and highlighting the rewards physical activity brings.” Everyone Active South East regional director Duncan Jefford added: “We are honoured to support National Fitness Day once again to shine a spotlight on fitness. “Ideally, every day would be fitness day and we hope that the early morning activities will inspire people to get moving.”
TICKETS for this year’s National Fitness Awards are already selling fast. The highly anticipated event, one of the most prestigious on the fitness calendar, will this year be once again held at Leicester’s Athena venue. And anticipation for the big night, set to take place on November 30, has only increased since shortlists for the awards were announced. The evening begins with drinks and canapes, before attendees enjoy a three course meal and entertainment. This year’s theme is Rio, promising to bring all the vibrant colour and energy of the famous Brazilian party city. And all this is before the main event: the awards presentation, hosted by Jenny Pacey and Wayne Gordon, where the winners of this year’s fiercely contested categories will collect their awards. And after our winners have been crowned, you can dance the night away at the disco – with a
midnight breakfast to boot. National events co-ordinator Simone Saunders said: “I can’t believe how fast it has come around, but this year’s NFAs are almost here. “We are so excited to welcome everyone to the Athena and share in what is sure to be a night to remember. But don’t delay in getting your tickets: they are on a first come, first serve basis, but the good news is you can purchase as many as you want. “It sounds like quite the show and that’s before we even give out the awards themselves. “Make sure you visit www. nationalfitnessawards. co.uk to find out more and secure your tickets now.”
