Study finds best exercise to stretch your brain ...

HIGH intensity interval training and continuous moderate exercise deliver greater mental benefits to the brain than sustained strenuous exercise, a South Australian study has found.

Researchers from the University of South Australia in Adelaide conducted multiple experiments involving 128 people whose brains were monitored after a single bout of aerobic exercise on a stationary bike and treadmill.

The experiments ranged from low intensity continuous exercise to high intensity interval exercise, with the heart rate varying between 50 to 90 per cent intensity.

UniSA researcher Dr Ashleigh Smith and her PhD student Maddison Mellow found that the greatest changes in neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to rewire or modify its neural connections – occurred with 20 minutes of interval training or 25 minutes of continuous moderate aerobic exercise.

Dr Smith said cycling or running at full speed without mixing up the tempo may elevate the stress hormone, cortisol, blocking the positive effects.

“We already know that engaging in regular aerobic exercise is good for the brain, improving memory, attention and learning,” she added.

“However, we need to understand why it is so beneficial and what the best exercise, intensity and duration is.”

Dr Smith said cortisol appeared to play a major role in whether an exercise was mentally beneficial.

She said high cortisol levels blocked neuroplastic responses, yet interval training may allow a sweet spot for cortisol rates to return to normal levels, the researchers say.

“What makes the brain special is that, unlike a computer, it processes sensory and motor signals in parallel,” Dr Smith added.

“It has many neural pathways that can replicate another’s function so that if the brain is damaged it can re-route signals along a different pathway. The more elastic the brain, the easier this is.”

Maddison said neuroplasticity drove the brain’s development, from infancy to adulthood, helping to learn new skills, form memories and recover from brain injuries or stroke.

“Long-term studies demonstrate that people who engage in regular exercise show greater neural connectivity than those who are sedentary. Research also shows that exercising before learning a new motor skill can help a person learn it much faster,” she concluded.

New senior appointment at leisure operator OLDHAM Community Leisure has employed a new head of business development responsible for the trust’s marketing and sales functions plus its customer relationship management platforms, including the contact centre.

Simon Blair will be responsible for helping to direct the company strategically.

He will be working with colleagues in the senior team as well as the board to facilitate key projects and ensure OCL continually moves forward, maintaining its standing as the key health and wellbeing provider in the community.

Simon has extensive experience of the leisure and fitness industry, having spent 18 years working at Trafford Leisure across several key roles.

His time with the leisure provider saw him complete 13 years as head of marketing and sales, four years as a general manager and a brief period in his last role as head of fitness and wellness.

County Durham set for £62.8m regeneration THE landscape of leisure in Durham is set to change, following the approval by the County Council of a significant £62.8million investment programme to transform services.

Working in close consultation with leisure development specialist Alliance Leisure through the UK Leisure Framework, proposals were submitted and approved by Cabinet recently, paving the way for a transformation programme to bring provision in line with the needs of a modern day community.

As part of the plans, outdated facilities in Seaham, Chester-leStreet and Bishop Auckland are proposed to be replaced by new multi-facility provisions, with modernisation proposals also approved at several other leisure facilities across the county.

In addition, facility provision and programming across Durham will undergo a full review with a host of innovations tipped for inclusion.

Staff raise £1,500 in honour of former colleague A CHARITY football tournament has raised more than £1,500 for good causes.

Staff at Life Leisure arranged the six-a-side competition in honour of former colleague Martin Harriman, who passed away in May last year, with donations divided between the Stroke Association and Stepping Hill Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Malcolm McPhail, group CEO of Life Leisure, said the event was a fitting tribute to the much-loved former operations manager, who was a huge local personality and an integral part of the community.

How the best health clubs retain members

FOR more than 20 years, I’ve been intensely studying health club operators and member behaviour in order to understand what can be done to increase member retention and reduce attrition.

As part of this I have looked internally at our industry for examples of best practice, observing the operating behaviours of health clubs that are able to retain more than 50 per cent of their members for more than two years.

I have also looked externally at some of the world’s most effective customer experience strategies; developed by large organisations such as Apple, Amazon and McLaren Cars, as well as companies as small as my local coffee shop.

My investigation of the thoughts and processes that went into developing these customer experiences reveals common patterns that can be adopted and replicated by any health club operator.

Whether you’re a small, medium or large organisation you will be able to apply some, if not all, within your business today, to begin growing tomorrow.

Meeting customer expectations In a market where we are increasingly seeing duplications of products and services, it is important that health club operators find ways to deliver both the service and the experience the member expects.

At one end of the spectrum, budget operators had been able to separate themselves from traditional health clubs on price.

But this is becoming increasing difficult when, in many cases, there are three, four or more in close proximity. So even budget clubs are now looking to differentiate by offering something their competitors are not.

All business owners want to be known for the quality of the experience they provide, as well as making money.

been growing steadily in number for the past few years. What distinguishes them from the majority of operators is their passion to deliver a quality product and service each and every time. Again, this is starting to be replicated by larger organisations, who have had to step up their game.

The ‘best’ operators all believe their business begins and ends with their member experience. By delivering a memorable service experience they put their members first.

Member experience has suddenly become a hot topic for businesses of all sizes, and many have had to scramble to develop member experience strategies and programmes. However, the operators that embed the philosophy reap huge rewards; it becomes more than this quarter’s new project.

These operators have something about them that separates them from their competition. The common theme is that they have mapped out how the member will engage with their business. Not just the process, but the experience too. So

an online booking page needs to be functional but, what does it look like? It’s as much about how the member feels as what they do.

Operators that have created their businesses with the members’ experience in mind have been reaping the financial benefits for years. You can’t fake a member-centric culture; it needs to be genuine.

Retention is planned for Operators can’t simply focus on upping the member experience at certain times of the year. Each quarter must have its own strategic plan, covering what you are going to deliver and how that fits with your wider member retention strategy.

The best time to test and measure the quality of service delivery is when the clubs are at their busiest; Monday nights towards the end of January. This is when you really get to see what’s going on.

Test and evaluate your business under the toughest conditions.

Results will be in months not weeks

One reason why the health club business is so sales focused and less retention focused is because of the gap between action and results.

Run a new sales campaign and you can check daily to see the results. Add an extra month or two to a membership and it could take six, nine or 12 months to see an impact.

Health club operators are not used to operating in these time frames. Not great if your manager or board wants to know the return on investment at the next quarterly meeting.

However, the University of Hertfordshire’s Sports Village upped it’s income by 35 per cent in two years just by focussing on retention – so it’s definitely worth the wait.

Former international powerlifter who cheated death opens gym

A FORMER international powerlifter who overcame a near-death experience has opened his first gym in Derby.

Anthony Spalding was impaled on a fence, which narrowly missed his vital organs, and spent a week in an induced coma after the car he was a passenger in was involved in a horrific head-on collision in 2010.

He was air-lifted to the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, after the crash which took place on a country road in Newstead, Nottinghamshire.

Then 19, he was given an epidural to ease the pain and subsequently put into an induced coma to cope with the trauma.

When he came round, Anthony found he couldn’t see and was left temporarily paralysed.

But he eventually regained his sight and remarkably made a full recovery.

Anthony, who is now 29, said: “My family and I like to joke about the accident.

“Every year we have ‘Happy Impalement Day’. But seriously, I was very lucky to survive.

“I was with my friend, Dave Eaton, who was the driver of the car. We were on a country road, just about to go round a bend, when a car travelling in the opposite direction ran us off the road.

“Dave’s car somersaulted in the air a few times before landing in a field. Dave was absolutely fine - he managed to get out of the car by climbing through the window.

“I thought that I was fine, too, until I tried to get out of the car and realised that I couldn’t move. I looked fine and initially couldn’t see any broken bones or damage.

“But I soon realised that I was skewered to the car seat by a fence post, which had gone through my left arm, into my body via my rib cage - which was completely smashed – and out the other side.

“What I didn’t realise until later, though, was that the post was stopping me from bleeding to death.”

The fence post had to come out, though – and it wasn’t an easy operation.

Anthony, who lives with his wife Kelly and two-year-old son Oscar, added:

“When doctors removed the fence, both of my lungs collapsed.

“I was in a real mess, although I remember very little about it, as I was put into an induced coma at this point.

“I can vaguely remember random points about the night but, thankfully, very little about the time I spent in hospital.”

Anthony spent 16 days in hospital but, just four weeks after the accident, he returned to the gym. It would be a further 18 months, though, before he would resume lifting the heavy weights.

He says that exercise helped him on his road to recovery.

Anthony said: “I couldn’t wait to get back into the gym.

“But I didn’t start lifting again for a while and it wasn’t until 18 months after the accident that I started competing in powerlifting events again.”

He moved to Derby in 2015 to work at DW Fitness, and earlier this month he decided to start his own business.

Anthony said: “Spalding Strength has been a real labour of love.

“I’ve spent most of 2020 getting the

gym ready; setting up equipment, laying the floor tiles and cleaning the place.

“I have already started doing one-onone sessions with clients I had on my books but I’m now taking bookings for group training sessions. It’s an exciting time.”

Anthony has first-hand experience of working with those with health issues. His wife, Kelly, has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome; a genetic condition which causes pain in the and instability of the joints.

“Very few people have even heard of Ehlers-Danlos,” said Anthony.

“It is a condition which Kelly was born with and one which leaves her feeling fatigued. She does, though, manage it through exercise and copes remarkably well.

“I would like to help more people with issues like Kelly and am looking forward to opening up the doors of my gym and welcoming people in.”

Session gave me ‘more than just a workout’

By Katie Walters Trib3 has been dubbed ‘’more than just a workout’’ and after a recent session at their Leeds based facility, I can confirm the motto coheres exactly to the experience.

Workouts at Trib3 are designed to push each individual to his or her limit, in order to reach optimum peak fitness, by incorporating high intensity interval training into each element of the lesson.

Instructors integrate all-round exercises within the session to ensure the individual is constantly working every muscle area in their body.

The studios recently increased the intensity of their workouts, introducing the launch of their new air bikes.

Benefits of this new addition include a high volume of calories being burned in a shorter period of time and an efficient full body workout.

For exercise enthusiasts who like to push themselves, this 45-minute class has been scientifically proven to burn an excess of 1,000 calories, exerting maximum energy and therefore speeding up metabolism rate.

On entering the building, I was welcomed by friendly staff and fitness instructor Liam, conductor of the lesson.

Interior décor inside the boutique studio is chic, urban and contemporary – and the stylish changing rooms do not disappoint! You never have to worry about that terrifying post-workout look ever again, thanks to the showers and beauty stations installed within the changing rooms.

Complimentary hair and beauty products, on display, refresh you after a strenuous yet satisfying work out.

Before beginning the class, Liam introduced me to the equipment I would use throughout the session, including the new air bikes.

He briefed us on instructions of the workout and demonstrated how to use each piece of equipment in the correct manner. Located around the studio, were three different exercise stations.

The group would rotate around each area until each activity had been

completed (15 minutes to execute all three areas), alternating between bursts of high and low intensity.

Throughout the discipline I was fitted with a MyZone fitness belt, installed with a sensor to track heart rate throughout the exercise.

Statistics of each attendee are displayed on screens enabling each individual to record their progression at any time during the lesson.

The workout itself consists of three specific fitness elements: Treadmill – Cardio intense movement to burn calories and increase the heart rate, Resistance – functional training and free weight exercises designed to tone and shape your body and finally Intensity – a full body battle, targeting every muscle, using the air bikes.

Entering the studio, I was amazed at the vibrant, futuristic appearance set in darkness with piercing lights, drawing attention to the different exercise stations.

As I prepared to warm up, the instructor invited us into the room to take position in one of the workout areas. Starting at the Resistance area, Liam instructed us to start with a set of squat movements whilst stretching and lifting weights in both arms, combined with lunges whilst holding the weights.

Each participant had a variety of weights available to use, so you could tailor the weights to suit your own body.

While my group tackled the resistance routine, Liam guided the other groups, explaining when to change incline on the treadmills or which target to reach on the cadence scale when using the air bikes.

After five minutes of resistance, a ‘boxing’ bell would sound to end the routine and we then moved onto intensity training.

Once again, after guidance from Liam, we changed the pace of our cycling frequently, with quick sharp bursts of energy to reach the target goal of a cadence between 40-60, followed by a resting period and slower cycling, this was repeated for between four and five minutes.

The final station was the treadmill area. We were instructed to run using a variation of speeds and inclines, running at a steady pace to start, with intervals of high incline and faster speeds.

The full circuit was repeated three times within the 45-minute training session. However, Liam would alter each area slightly each time.

For example, new exercises were introduced for the resistance round by adding a dumbbell bench press, bench

hop overs and weight lifts while leaning over the bench, focussing on back and chest strength.

Within the Intensity area, we alternated between cycling without the seat, to focus on calf muscles and also using arms only to make a rowing motion, tailoring the bikes to improve arm muscles whilst remaining at the correct training level.

Although this workout is very intense, the instructors ooze energy and are exceptionally good at motivating people throughout the class; instructions given always include a fitness range, which means you can train at a comfortable level, but still apply yourself to reach more challenging targets.

Being part of this class was an immersive experience from the physical training to the technology and audio experienced within the studio.

Depending on which intensity you trained at, the techno music would change rhythm to reflect the speed you worked at.

At the end of the session, a small cool down routine took place. Before leaving Trib3 Leeds, I visited the mixology bar, and joined my fellow Trib3 team for a celebratory shake, opting for the Berry Blitz.

This was much needed and the perfect pick me-up after our hard –earned efforts. Trib3 offer a variety of shakes and I can guarantee there is something for everyone; these energising drinks are packed with nutrients and protein, to replenish, restore and revive.

In addition, the team at the studio take a photo of any new member and add them to the ‘First Sweat’ Wall. A wall dedicated to first timers who have completed their first workout.

After a couple of days post-workout, my muscles ache and my calves are sore. However, the personal satisfaction and fulfilment of completing a class is exhilarating and overwhelming, something to be proud of.

It was a pleasure to be a part of ‘Trib3’ and I would recommend any fitness fanatic looking for a challenge to attend a stimulating session.

Awards success “hard to describe in words” NOMINATIONS for the 2020 National Fitness Awards opened recently, offering an exciting opportunity for gyms and fitness professionals to have their efforts and achievements recognised and awarded.

This month we caught up with Daniel Ball of Bluestone Fitness in Ashby-de-laZouch, 2018’s Newcomer of the Year and last year’s National and Regional Gym of the Year recipient.

Aside from offering a host of fitness classes and a full facility gym, Bluestone also provides 50-minute talking therapy

sessions with registered therapists.

“We wanted to create a platform for ourselves to showcase what we do with our mental health initiative and to try and support other clubs in doing the same,” he said.

“Winning the award has given our club a stamp of approval, and that in itself gives new members the confidence that they are joining the right club.”

Daniel added that the win gave staff a huge boost in morale.

“Everyone put in a huge amount of effort and to get the grand prize

on the night exceeded any of our expectations.”

Since their win, Bluestone has put in place plans to extend the club and create new services that they don’t currently offer.

So, the big question – how did it feel to win?

“Hard to describe with words,” Daniel added.

“Starting from scratch three-and-a-half years ago to winning the national gym of the year – it felt incredible.

“We were totally honoured receiving

the award, especially knowing the quality of the competition was so high.

“I don’t think any of the team stopped celebrating until Monday morning.

During the design process the Eleiko team also designed a variety of bespoke platform decals, to add branding and continuity throughout the new Marchon training space.

The collaboration between Marchon and Eleiko started at the FIBO Expo in Cologne, Germany where Ollie met the

team from Eleiko UK. From there, a relationship grew and included a visit to Halmstad to tour Eleiko HQ. “I was lucky enough to have a tour of the showroom and factory and was introduced to the entire team behind the best gym equipment in the world,” Ollie added.

“It was the attention to detail, the care and the confidence they showed they were the only fit for my vision with Marchon.

ABERDEEN Sports Village has recently undergone a £500,000 overhaul to enable it to offer a stronger user experience, with complete digital connectivity at its core.

The site, which reopened at the end of 2019, has capacity for 9,500 members and, since re-opening, membership has already increased by 17 per cent.

Health and fitness development manager Kris McIntosh said: “We knew we needed to update our facility to modernise our kit and, critically, move with industry trends in terms of tracking and usage.”

The key priority was to create a connected workout area with everything digitally linked, where members could track workouts across all equipment.

It’s for this reason that ASV selected Precor’s Preva – which captures workout data from CV machines – and the new Advagym by Sony on Precor’s Discovery and Icarian Strength lines.

Sony’s Advagym means operators also using Precor’s Preva can now offer a complete workout tracking journey – Preva stats are downloaded to the Advagym app, giving users a single source for all workout data and an entirely connected gym experience.

“From an operational standpoint, the combination of Preva and Advagym gives us the ability to gather data like never before,” added Kris.

“We use it to check our equipment status daily as well as for regular usage.

“From a maintenance and management perspective we have access to every piece of kit’s status and last contact.

This allows us to highlight specific trends and instantly report any faults, which decreases equipment downtime dramatically.”

Sony Advagym sensors on ASV’s Precor strength kit record reps and sets. Members touch their phone to the sensor ‘puck’ to start tracking their workout in real-time, with stats uploaded to the app.

PTs and gym staff use the app to increase interaction with members; the Personal Training Client function means ASV’s team can interact via messaging and track completed workouts so customers achieve goals more quickly.

“I’ve been incredibly impressed,” said Kris. “I use the system to monitor strength kit utilisation so I know what’s being used, how often and when.

“The insights into user preferences are

unreal. I can run reports on every single bit of kit and make considerably more informed decisions.”

ASV had more than 1.8 million repetitions across the fixed weight machines in the first month after opening.

The highest number of reps was on the cable machine, which clocked a total of 147,366 reps in the same month.

ASV also chose to include the Open Format Queenax Training Rig and the Assault range based so it offers a functional training area with high intensity equipment.

It runs functional Queenax classes on the gym floor such as Queenax HIIT, Stretch and Queenax Core.

ASV has seen 54 per cent occupancy within this area. The centre’s NPS rating – the percentage of people who would recommend ASV to a friend or colleague – has leapt up to 49 per cent, which is considered ‘great’ (0-30 = good, 30-70 = great).

ASV personal trainer Lisa Vass said: “Having Advagym on our strength kit has made tracking a client’s progress and creating individualised programmes quicker and smarter. It’s all there, accessible in the app. It’s great being able to see how well clients are getting on and how much effort they are putting in – rather than just going by their word.”

Historic gem opens doors to reveal new lifestyle venue NEWCASTLE’S iconic City Baths has opened its doors to the public to reveal the fully restored pool and new fitness and wellbeing facilities – six years after its closure to the public.

Fusion Lifestyle, the charity behind the £7.5million redevelopment, saved the venue after it was closed in 2013 and has worked with Napper Architects and specialist contractor Createability to breathe new life into the neglected Grade II listed building – a process which has taken more than three years to complete.

The City Baths, Newcastle, will be one of only 11 historic Turkish baths currently in operation across the UK. Anthony Cawley, director of operations at Fusion Lifestyle, said: “The baths have been enjoyed by generations of locals since they opened in 1928 and are a cultural icon to the residents of the city.

“When we spotted the campaign to save the building, we were keen to take on the project and help ensure that its precious history was retained.

As well as sensitively restoring the historic pool, the new space combines modern facilities – including a fully equipped gym, sauna and state-of-theart fitness studios that will host up to 100 exercise classes every week.

The Turkish baths and a luxury spa are also set to open on-site shortly after and will offer a range of treatments.

Ian Cotgrave, managing director at Createability, said: “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved in this renovation. While it’s been a difficult project, due to some of the technical issues of dealing with a 100-year-old building, the end results are stunning and have secured the future of this beautiful building.”

Users will be able to make use of its facilities from 6.30am until 9.30pm on weekdays and from 8am until 5.30pm at weekends.

By Ivan Stevenson AT THIS time of the year the seemingly never-ending darkness and freezing temperatures are enough to put anyone off a morning gym session.

But in this fitness-focused era, gym-goers are starting to turn towards alternative gym sessions, such as dead-of-night workouts.

According to PureGym, a whopping 20 per cent of visits take place between 11.30pm and 5am.

Although you may think that it’s just students or insomniacs that enjoy a night-time gym session, studies have shown that the demographic splits for night gymgoers are fairly wide.

In fact, some studies have shown that only six per cent of people in the UK work a typical 9-5.

Collecting membership payments effectively COLLECTING membership payments is challenging – ensuring the correct amount is taken, on time and dealing with failures effectively. Three possible payment methods exist – Direct Debit, recurring card payment and standing order – how do these methods compare?

Ease of set up To take Direct Debit payments you can opt for direct access and manage payments internally, or, choose indirect access managing payments through a third party (typically faster and more cost effective).

Members complete an instruction, that’s forwarded to their bank authorising collection of agreed payments.

Taking recurring credit/debit card payments typically requires a merchant account, card machine, virtual terminal and/or payment gateway.

This can be costly with fees for set up, as well as when taking payments. Members set up payments online, in person and/or by phone providing card details and permission for future payments to be taken.

You only require a bank account to receive standing order payments. Members give an instruction to their bank with your account details, a payment reference, and the fixed payment amount and timing.

Flexibility and control A pull-based payment method, Direct Debits let you adjust the amount and timing of collections. Members must be notified of changes in the amount, date and frequency of payments at least 10 working days beforehand. You have control over collections, while ensuring members know of changes.

Also, pull-based, recurring card payments let you change the amount and timing of collections. Notifying members of changes is advised, but not required. You are in control when collecting payments due, however, inadequate communication of changes could impact member experience.

A push-based method, standing orders are fixed with a set amount paid on a recurring basis. If changes are required, the member will need to cancel the standing order and set up a new one – you have no control.

Receiving funds You will typically receive payment within three working days of submitting a Direct Debit payment file for processing. Where a third-party provider is collecting for you, timings may differ – usually funds are paid monthly or bi-monthly. Choose an FCA authorised payments provider to ensure

income is protected once collected.

When a recurring card payment has been processed, you should receive funds immediately or next working day.

Once a standing order is set up, on a set date/increment a fixed amount will be debited from a members account to yours.

Payment failures and defaulters Direct Debit payments bounce/fail for two reasons – insufficient funds or a cancelled instruction with the bank. You cannot reattempt collection for cancelled instructions; however, you can resubmit where there were insufficient funds. Specialists, like Harlands Group, offer this as part of a full-service Direct Debit collection solution. Direct Debit instructions are frequently erroneously cancelled, Harlands notifies members to reinstate the instruction, resuming payments.

These processes lower default rates and improve retention.

Recurring card payments fail for several reasons, failure rates are higher than Direct Debits as cards expire and are often cancelled due to loss/theft. Card updater services are available, however not all cards will be covered. You cannot resubmit for a failed card payment, although you may get access to a list of failures and use this manually chase members. Like Direct Debits, standing orders will fail if insufficient funds are available or the instruction is cancelled. However, no reports or alerts tell you this. You will need to reconcile payments received with those due to identify missed payments and manually follow up with members.

Member protections The Direct Debit Guarantee gives members reassurance with several safeguards – helping you provide a positive and consistent member payments experience.

Protections for members should something go wrong with a recurring card payment will differ if a credit or debit card is used. If a payment is taken erroneously, members paying by credit card can request a refund from you, or via their bank/card scheme.

Protections do not always apply to debit cards. Although some banks may help, there are no protections in place to safeguard members once a standing order payment is taken. However, members are assured changes cannot be made to the amount or timing of payments.

Finance options for the fitness industry THE UK health and fitness industry, now worth £5billion according to the 2019 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report, is healthier than ever with increases of 2.9 per cent in the number of fitness facilities, 4.7 per cent in the number of members and 4.2 per cent in market value.

Start-ups collaborate to take on gym giants TWO small start-ups in the North East of England have collaborated to take on the global giants in the world of health and fitness apps.

Gym training start-up Fit Gurus was launched in 2014 by co-founders Paul Slater and Dave Stidolph, who were later joined by Mark Hemmings.

Since then the team has worked with Newcastle based Nebula Labs to develop the Gym Plan app. The app acts as the user’s very own digital personal trainer, providing exercise plans and instructional videos.

Since radically overhauling Gym Plan, the app has gained more than 320,000 downloads, it has been featured in over 50 countries, and achieved £400,000 seed investment.

Recently it beat nearly two million others to be chosen by Apple to be featured as its prestigious App of the Day. Paul Slater, co-founder of Gym Plan, said: “Without the support and expertise of the Nebula Labs team it’s unlikely we would be enjoying such accolades and ‘App of the day’ and being featured in dozens of countries across the world.

“They’re responsive to our demanding development schedule and attention to detail.

‘Always going that extra mile to make sure our app release schedule is met and we achieve our

Users can modify their personal workout plans, so the app can adapt to the user’s changing health context.

With a strong emphasis on creating a highly personal experience for each user, there is now the ability to record voice commands, so – without even opening the app – a user can ask Siri to tell them what their workout is for that day.

EXF Fitness successfully completes its fifth installation project for Third Space BOUTIQUE Fitness equipment manufacturer, EXF Fitness has recently completed its fifth installation project for luxury health group, Third Space.

This latest project has seen the supplier create and install bespoke functional fitness and storage solutions at the newly opened Third Space Islington.

The club is home to a wide mix of state-of-the-art facilities including, for the first time, a dedicated space for families called Little Space.

At the heart of the luxury health club is the 7,000sq ft arena of flexible training which includes a performance cardio area, dedicated strength training area and a bespoke functional training rig.

The bespoke functional training rig, which is 243 cubic metres, incorporates a unique boxing bag rail and four box bags and monkey bars.

As the club is situated underground, a bespoke rig was required due to height limitations.

The team also designed the rig to seamlessly fit around all overhead service pipes.

Working within small confines, the

team at EXF was able to maximise every inch of space.

The rig incorporates bespoke storage solutions for smaller pieces of equipment such as kettlebells and dumbbells. The rig is complete with beautifully crafted suspension training equipment from Auster.

In the functional training area Auster has supplied the highest quality aluminium parallettes.

In the main gym, EXF has created and installed five bespoke squat racks. The team carefully considered the design, placing the racks alongside the main walkway to

avoid any obstruction to the layout Finally, in the studio, EXF has created and installed bespoke storage solutions.

To maximise on space, EXF incorporated existing pillars within the room to create wall mounted storage for bars and pump sets.

“Our relationship with Third Space has continued to flourish and we’re proud to have supported the team with this latest project at Third Space Islington,” said Matt Leadbitter, sales director for EXF. “Third Space has a strong brand aesthetic and we’ve loved working alongside a brand that enables us to do what we do best: creating bespoke equipment for the UK’s most exciting fitness brands.”

LONG Stratton Leisure Centre, run by South Norfolk Council, underwent a major £2million renovation in 2019 which saw the existing building redeveloped into a state-of-the-art facility, now on two levels.

Work included improvements to the sports hall and changing rooms, along with a new 80-station gym featuring the latest equipment from Matrix Fitness, two multi-use fitness studios offering more than 40 exercise classes a week, a spinning studio, GP referral services as well as a café and soft play area.

Daniel Infanti, general manager at Long Stratton Leisure Centre, said: “As a council run gym, we recognised that we needed a facility that offered something to everyone, of all different abilities and fitness levels.

“It wasn’t just about modernising but about really considering the needs of our members and creating something that gave them the best experience possible.”

The original layout limited the gym to separate rooms for cardio and free

weights, which created an inconvenient and uninviting space for members. South Norfolk Council enlisted the help of Matrix Fitness, collaborating with them on equipment and design, resulting in an accessible, first-class facility.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the support that Matrix Fitness gave us throughout this entire project,” added Daniel.

“Not only did they advise us on the design, layout and equipment for the gym but they also set us up with a temporary gym facility while our refurbishment was being done, and due to the high standard of this we managed to grow our membership by 100 during that time.”

The new look included an open plan layout, a balance between the cardio area, free weights and functional training. This included the latest Matrix Fitness connected strength and cardio equipment, a Connexus rig, S-Drive Performance Trainer and a Double Mega Race.

“We have seen a massive uplift in membership since the renovation, we have not just retained our current members, but have enticed old members back and welcomed members from new markets.” Daniel added. “We have had to double our class exercise timetable due to demand and the footfall has gone through the roof. We now see 15,000 people through our doors each month compared to 5,000 before the refurbishment.”

After the renovation, targets were to have 800 members by the end of March 2020, which was more than doubling the original membership figures. The team had already exceeded that target by November 2019, with membership now at more than 920 and anticipating more to come.

Tim Grainger-Smith, head of sales – public sector at Matrix Fitness, said: “This was a project not just about providing gym equipment, but about supporting a team through every stage, from start to finish, of an incredible renovation.

“We worked together to ensure that temporary facilities were installed while the refurbishment was taking place, to such a high standard that new members were even drawn to join during this time, and then focused on helping the team create an accessible, inviting and engaging training space for members of all abilities.

“We like to take on partnerships, providing guidance and expertise in any aspect we can, from the initial design to the day the doors are open to the public.

And it’s been fantastic to see the positive impact this renovation has already had on the members, staff and the wider community.”

EMD UK makes two new appointments

Excelsior presents new app to health club operators IN preparation for launching their OnDemand App, the Excelsior team hit the road to gain valuable feedback from users and spread the word about just how effective micro teaching can be.

Several groups of personal trainers from a variety of facilities enjoyed being the first to experience the bite-sized learning App which offers hundreds of individual modules on topics such as personal development, soft skills, anatomy, retention and programming.

Each session consisted of a lesson on empathy which defined the subject, why it matters, how it is demonstrated and why empathy is vital to member experience.

This short micro-learning session demonstrated to those present how teams and individuals can develop their skills in an interactive way in under 10 minutes per module.

Despite the differences in these facilities, all participants recognised the benefits of micro-learning as a fast and effective mechanism for delivering high quality education on a variety of topics.

They enjoyed exploring this new interactive environment to check or refresh their understanding, gain new knowledge of a specific topic, and complete a formal industryrecognised digital assessment.

Available to operators, the Excelsior OnDemand App can also be white labelled enabling them to lead with their own branded education and customised content to easily deliver on staff investment and education to help skill, stabilise and retain valuable team members.

EMD UK is pleased to announce two new appointments to join the team at its Horsham head office.

Shelley Meyern will join the senior management team as head of operations with effect from March 16.

She was previously head of business development at EMD UK and will hand those duties back to Jade Cation, who is returning from maternity leave.

In her new role, Shelley’s main responsibilities will be: ■ To lead all operational matters within EMD UK. ■ To lead on relationships with selected external stakeholders and partners.

Suicide rates are on the rise (6,507 in 2018, an increase of 12 per cent on the previous year) and the estimated cost of mental ill-health is £105billion per year in England alone.

It has never been more important to look after our mental wellbeing both professionally and personally.

CIMSPA chose to complete our Level 2 Award in Mental Health Awareness to learn how to spot signs of mental ill health and how to start a conversation that could change somebody’s life.

Like so many other organisations, CIMSPA elected to have its learners represented from all levels and areas of their business in order to have trained colleagues accessible across the company.

A group of 15 staff were fully trained and now act as wellbeing ambassadors at CIMSPA, actively engaging colleagues in mental health awareness initiatives, charity events and programmes to keep their awareness high.

The CIMSPA team was trained by our partner Ad Lib Training which delivered our Mental Health Awareness and Mental Health First Aid units.

The first unit provided learners with an understanding and awareness of common mental health disorders and

issues, thus helping to reduce stigma and discrimination and encourage people to talk about mental health.

The second unit helps learners spot the signs of mental health issues in themselves as well as others and gives them the skills to offer mental health first aid to people.

I hope that the example they have set will inspire CIMSPA members to take the qualification themselves and thus be able to support colleagues and clients with mental health problems.

I believe that everyone working within the sport and physical activity sector should have an understanding of this subject so they can speak as confidently about mental health as they do about physical health.

Ultimately, giving people the knowledge, skills and resources to act effectively when faced with mental illhealth at work or socially is a potentially life-saving skill and exactly what is needed right now.

Centre set to open as £5.9million refurb completed A NEW 25m, six lane heated pool with a state-of-the-art retractable roof has opened at Ivybridge Leisure Centre.

The pool, outside paved area, new wet side changing rooms and poolside sauna and steam rooms complete the build at the facility which has already seen a top-of-therange gym, purpose-built exercise studio, café and other new facilities open to the public.

Alongside the new pool, Fusion Lifestyle has upgraded the squash courts, refurbished the second studio and changing rooms and extended the reception and café areas.

Peter King, business manager at Fusion Lifestyle, said: “The redevelopment of Ivybridge Leisure Centre has been part of a multi-million-pound investment we have carried out across six Devon leisure centres.

“The changes at Ivybridge are by far the most extensive and we are really exciting to

unveil them.

“We work with lidos and pools across the UK but this is our first with a retractable roof so we hope visitors and members at the centre will really enjoy the flexible fitness and fun that this will bring.”

Partnerships’ powerful role in driving real-life change SANDWELL Leisure Trust’s Portway Lifestyle Centre in the West Midlands is celebrating the success of its partnership programme, ranked ‘Excellent’ by Sport England’s Quest scheme following assessment in 2019.

The centre demonstrated the efficacy of strong partnerships in helping to deliver fully accessible and inclusive health, leisure and wellbeing services.

Quest, the continuous improvement tool for leisure facilities and sports development teams, is managed by Right Directions on behalf of Sport England.

One of its many modules assesses Partnership and Collaboration by exploring how well facilities work with stakeholders, including strategic and local partners, to develop projects driven by common goals and values.

Portway Lifestyle Centre manager John Harling said: “We’re really proud of our score in this module. It recognises the valuable work we have done building successful partnerships with local clubs and organisations.

“Through these collaborations, Portway has succeeded in reaching out to a broad variety of users, meeting a diverse range of needs.”

Quest’s assessor found Portway Lifestyle Centre’s partnership with Adult Services to be especially ground-breaking. The centre has forged strong links with the NHS, Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council Adult Social Care and local disability organisations.

Together, they are working towards a ‘whole life’ approach to health and social care service delivery for the residents of the borough and the wider community.

Diane Cox, disability day opportunities manager at SMBC Adult Services, added: “Portway Leisure Centre has helped to bring together local health, leisure and social care teams to offer a new and exciting way to deliver day opportunities to adults with disabilities.

“Sharing our skills and expertise, we have been able to provide fully-integrated and accessible activities, to encourage the development of capabilities and self-belief. This results in real lifechange for some of our service users.”

The success of Portway Lifestyle Centre has been identified using Right Directions’ new online portal, the RD-Dash.

The platform holds historical data from Quest’s assessments, including the most recent results

from 2019.

Operators can use the tool to analyse data and learn how they have performed compared to other facilities around the country.

Examining examples of best practise, they can gain valuable insight that helps them to improve.

Looking specifically at the data from the Partnership and Collaborations module, another strong performer stands out.

Bitterne Leisure Centre in Southampton, which also scored ‘Excellent’, was praised

by Quest’s assessor for partnering with the Active Communities Team, part of Active Nation Southampton, to run programmes to get more people active.

They used a range of data sources, including Sport England’s Active Lives survey, to identify target groups. Working with a range of services and organisations, they developed strategies for removing specific barriers to participation.

Quest’s hallmarks of success Partnership and Collaboration is a core module for all teams going through an Active Communities Entry, Plus or Stretch Quest assessment.

It can also be selected as a choice module by facilities undergoing a Plus assessment. Facilities and teams are assessed for their delivery of a range of outcomes: Involving stakeholders, commissioners, strategic and local partners in planning; regularly canvassing their opinions to shape services, inform practice and optimise resources.

Comfortably working with partners inside and outside of the traditional sports sector, coordinating joint projects driven by common goals and values.

Creating measurable objectives for partnerships through structured agreements and working practices; demonstrating the benefits and value of collaboration.

The RD-Dash shows the overall score for this module is ‘Good’ for both Active Communities assessments and Quest for Facilities assessments.

In terms of how well staff work and collaborate effectively with partner organisations with similar values and goals, almost two thirds (64 per cent) of facilities were ranked ‘Excellent’ with a further 20 per cent scoring ‘Very Good’.

Drilling down into the data, it’s possible to find out more about trends. For instance, the majority of facilities were ranked highly for demonstrating efficient and effective use of collaborations to reach target audiences.

However, facilities and teams were not quite as effective at evaluating the success of partnerships and clearly identifying the positive impact of joint initiatives, with under half (40 per cent) scoring ‘Excellent’ for measurement.

Bolton Wanderers FC– powered by ServiceSport IT WAS an SOS call with a difference that recently led to a partnership between Bolton Wanderers Football Club and ServiceSport UK! Enjoying his honeymoon sailing around the Virgin Islands, Colin Marriott – chairman and owner of ServiceSport UK – received a call from David Flitcroft – assistant manager of Bolton Wanderers Football Club – seeking urgent help with the club’s gym facilities.

Relaying the conversation to his man on dry ground, Colin called upon Michael Ellis (senior manager at ServiceSport UK) to meet with David at Bolton Wanderers Football Club’s training ground along with Matt Barrass (head physiotherapist) and Kristian Aldred (first team sports scientist) to thrash out plans for a more spacious gym environment complemented by a wider range of fitness equipment for the first team, development squad, youth team and academy team to use.

During his visit to the training ground, Michael offered up a number of options to enhance the on site rehabilitation

centre too and support the team in getting players back on to the pitch.

One area that is, unfortunately, a crucial part of any football club, is the treatment tables and the upholstery on the physio tables was in need of some serious TLC. Take a look at the before and after photos above to see how the partnership between Bolton Wanderers Football Club and ServiceSport UK has already made a huge difference to the treatment tables at the training facility.

This is the first stage of the work to be completed at Bolton Wanderers Football Club training ground, as work will soon start on the upgrade of their gym facility.

UK’s best personal trainer discusses the ProScanner How long have you been working with Fit3D? I bought the ProScanner from Fit3D UK a little under a year ago.

Why did you decide to work with them?

I saw an advert in “Workout Magazine” and I wanted to not only provide something special for my clients I wanted to test my skills as a coach because the scanner paints a true reflection of a client’s transformation.

What are the benefits you’ve noticed as an operator?

Being named the best personal trainer in the UK three years running means I have to be ahead of the game. I have no room to fall behind so the scanner was a must.

Would you recommend it to other PTs/gyms?

100 per cent... only not to other gyms in my local area as I don’t want any competition.

The days of before and after photos are over, people now want more information not only in the form of visual improvement but they want to track detailed and accurate body composition data.

They want accountability and as a coach/trainer you should want that too, so in my eyes this isn’t a cost, it’s an investment in your own health club’s development. Fit3D is a one stop health assessment and progress checker that in my eyes… every facility should use.

SOME believe that a good gym service is about cleaning equipment, vacuuming out the dust and applying oil.

In reality, due to design and manufacturing improvements, there is limited vacuuming, almost no oiling and absolutely no cleaning down which allows technicians’ time to focus on other, more important aspects.

A good gym service is in fact an efficient process, designed to highlight the things which are most likely to cause a safety or operational failure and which are not easily detected.

Scotland’s first immersive studio opens as part of £1.2m leisure development FALKIRK Community Trust has launched Scotland’s first immersive studio as part of a £1.2m redevelopment of the Mariner Leisure Centre.

The Trust, which operates sport, recreation, arts, heritage and library services on behalf of Falkirk Council, appointed leisure development specialist Alliance Leisure to deliver the project under the UK Leisure Framework.

“We have been delighted to work with the Trust to envisage how we may support developing the type of facilities and services needed to increase participation among modern users, while securing a viable future for their sites,” said James Foley, commercial director at Alliance Leisure.

“It’s thanks to the UK Leisure Framework that they have been able to achieve their vision for Mariner Leisure Centre and we look forward to working with the Trust on its future projects.”

Opened in 1985, the centre had just over 1,000 members when Alliance conducted its initial review of the site in 2019. The company’s

latent demand report suggested a membership of more than 1,700 could be achieved by modernising the offer for today’s users.

The first floor of the centre has been redeveloped and now features Scotland’s first fully immersive workout environment, complete with a cinema size screen measuring almost 10m in span, top of the range audio and lighting systems and the Les Mills TRIP cycling workout.

The gym has almost doubled in size to 292 sqm, with more than 65 stations, including a Queenax functional training rig, sprint track, free weights, and two Keiser M7i wheelchair-accessible total body trainers.

There is also a newly created group fitness studio, which hosts a full timetable of live and virtual classes to complement the offering.

A separate review, conducted by Alliance Leisure, identified a need for wellness facilities to meet the needs of those not attracted by a traditional fitness offering.

The development therefore also includes a Shapemaster Hub, equipped with 12 pieces of power

assisted equipment, which is designed for less mobile users, those who suffer from obesity or illness or are undergoing post-operative rehabilitation.

A new office for Falkirk’s physical activity referral programme, Active Forth, will make it easier for the team to help those with more complex health issues to start their fitness journey.

The project has been funded by

Falkirk Council and forms part of wider plans to revitalise the leisure offer in the area.

Maureen Campbell, CEO of Falkirk Community Trust, added: “Modernising and improving the quality of our services, including the introduction of a new immersive spin studio, expands our relevance into new audiences – those with high expectations and an appetite for new activities close to home.”
