New six-figure gym opens in Kirkby VOLAIR has celebrated the official opening of the newly refurbished, state-of-the-art gym at Kirkby Leisure Centre.

Preston-based fitness solution provider Gym Gear designed and installed the new gym for Volair Ltd (a not-for-profit community interest company), and the gym’s members can now enjoy a top-of-the-range gym, set over two floors, offering

a full range of cardiovascular and resistance equipment, a function area with a sled track, a free weight area, and a new cutting edge Elevate machine.

Kevin Schofield, managing director at Volair, said: “We are delighted to unveil our new gym in the heart of Kirkby.

“As a not-for-profit organisation everything we do is for the benefit of the wider community of Knowsley and we are thrilled that this gym really does have something for everyone.

“We are seeing considerable growth in the area with the regeneration of Kirkby town centre, and as the new Volair gym is located in the heart of the town, we felt, as a business, that now is the right time to regenerate the gym and provide a special experience for all of our members.”

With the six-figure investment in the gym, residents can enjoy the positive impact that physical activity is proven to have on the overall health and wellbeing of communities, and with the top-of-the-range Gym Gear equipment, the Volair Kirkby gym is set to rival local health clubs and private gyms in the area.

David Bulcock, director at Gym Gear, added: “We have been delighted to work with Volair on this exciting new project.

“It is a testament to the hard work of our team that we have delivered a successful, 5,200 square ft floor-toceiling gym refurbishment in just four days.

“We are all proud of the new Volair gym, and we are looking forward to hearing the feedback from the members as they start to use the gym and all of the new equipment.”

Volair Ltd was formed in 2016 and is a council-owned and controlled company and operates 11 sites which include five centres for learning.

Active Nation partners with EGYM to drive supporter engagement AS PART of its drive to inspire a much wider segment of the community to be physically active, Active Nation has agreed a five-year partnership with leading connected gym floor provider, EGYM. Kicking off the partnership, Active Nation Yarborough in Lincoln has installed a Smart Strength Series circuit and Fitness Hub to support trainers in the delivery of an intuitive and highly personal experience for everyone.

Stuart Martin, managing director of Active Nation, said: “ukactive has set a target for the sector to be engaging five million more people in our gyms and leisure centres by 2030.

“We are totally bought into supporting this ambition, since it aligns perfectly with our mission to inspire the nation to improve their health and well-being.

“To achieve this, we are exploring new ways to engage beyond the 20 per cent of people who naturally enjoy exercise.

“It is a sad fact that, the people who could most benefit from physical activity, such as older adults, people with long term health conditions and those who lead a largely sedentary lifestyle, are currently under-represented in clubs and leisure centres across the country.

“As a sector, we need to find new ways to break down barriers that prevent them from engaging with our services to level up the inequalities that currently

exist.

“This is why we have invested in this new partnership with EGYM. Through the integration of Fitness Hub – EGYM’s central on-boarding and performance monitoring innovation and its automated, intelligent Smart Strength Series, every member, or supporter as we like to call them, experiences a highly personalised fitness and well-being journey based on their own, personal goals and biometrics.

‘Regular, automated, non-intrusive performance measures are also prompted to track progress and keep individuals informed of how the time invested is delivering a return.

“EGYM data shows, on average, even after a 12-month period, EGYM users are still working out 4.6 times per week. Data shared by Dr Paul Bedford at the recent ukactive Active Uprising event proves anyone visiting four or more times a month is almost twice as likely to remain

engaged than those visiting less than four times per month.

“So, not only does EGYM enable us to engage new demographics it also encourages long term engagement.

This is obviously good for the health of the individual but also has a significant positive impact on our bottom line.”

EGYM officially launched at Active Nation Yarborough at the beginning of August following two days of in-person trainer education.

Over the next few weeks all current members will be offered EGYM inductions and EGYM will play an integral part in acquisition marketing going forwards.

Assuming the integration in Yarborough goes well, Active Nation will roll out the EGYM Fitness Hub and Smart Strength Series to other venues over the next five years.

Tanya Hall, UK tender and partnership manager at EGYM UK, added: “This partnership is exciting. Our mission is to create a connected gym that works for everyone.

“This aligns perfectly to Active Nation’s ambition to level up disparities and encourage a more representative proportion of the population into the gym. All being well, this initial install will open the door to a roll-out that will see many communities benefit from our pioneering technology.”

Improvement work to start at centres WORK to improve Charnwood’s three leisure centres will soon get underway.

Charnwood Borough Council and its leisure partner Fusion Lifestyle announced the £1m investment earlier this year as part of a new contract meaning the partnership will continue for a further five years.

The extensive works will see improvements at Loughborough, Soar Valley and South Charnwood leisure centres including new gym equipment.

In addition, all three sites will be transformed with a new layout, lighting and flooring. All exercise studios will be upgraded and will have new equipment.

New purpose-built spin studios will also be created at Loughborough and Soar Valley and a new holistic studio and

sauna will be added at Loughborough Leisure Centre.

A further £150,000 will be invested in LED lighting at all three centres to help reduce carbon emissions.

Councillor Leigh Harper-Davies, the Council’s lead member for community support said: “I’m pleased work to upgrade some of the facilities at our leisure centres will soon be underway.

“We know how much residents have enjoyed being back at the gym or in the pool and this £1m investment programme will ensure each centre continues to provide communities with high quality leisure facilities and value for money.

“There will be some minor disruption along the way while work is being

carried out and I would like to thank people in advance for their patience.”

While works are being carried out, visitors may notice some minor disruption.

Leisure centre members will receive regular email updates and visitors are encouraged to check on each leisure centre website for the latest information.

It is hoped the improvement works will be completed towards the end of the year.

Anthony Cawley, CEO of Fusion Lifestyle, added: “We can’t wait to get these works started and to upgrade the leisure facilities available to residents in Charnwood.

“This is the second significant investment into the centres and we

are delighted that as a charity we can reinvest all funds that come into the centres.

“We believe in providing quality sport, leisure and fitness activities to the community and the planned redevelopment programme will ensure the centres offer top of the range facilities for many years to come.”

Facilities available across the three leisure centres include a pool and a gym at each site, fitness studios, a dedicated indoor cycle studio, sports hall, squash courts, astro turf pitch and an indoor soft play.

So far in 2022 more than 400,00 visits have taken place across the three leisure centres with an average of 58,000 visits per month.
