Data-driven methods is how to stay ahead and beat restrictions
AS THE health and fitness industry fights to rebuild following the fallout from Covid-19, proving your operation is Covid-safe has added another layer to the age-old challenges of attracting new members and convincing existing ones to stay. At a time when even the most basic of club operations are trickier, savvy operators need to look for new ways to diversify, innovate and stay ahead of the game. Ian Mullane, founder and CEO of Keepme, said: “Retention and membership sales remain an everpresent challenge for operators, even more so now that Covid has brought other issues into play. “It’s more important now than ever for fitness operators to truly understand their customers, their wants and needs, and what drives them to come to a facility. “The day-to-day running of a fitness facility has got infinitely harder. Based on conversations with hundreds of operators, we knew there was a need for an Artificial Intelligence-powered CRM that can manage the whole member lifecycle — from lead capture and sales to retention, secondary spend and exmember win back – leaving staff to get on with everyday tasks.” Ian and his team have launched Keepme V2, built from the ground up to provide the industry with the tools to tackle sales and retention in the new Covid normal. It blends AI with operational tools and a unique automations engine to streamline the efforts of fitness centres to attract, retain and re-engage members, and ultimately increase revenue. At its heart is an AI engine that helps operators make data-driven decisions to maximise revenue. “At a time when operators are struggling to implement ever changing new rules and regulations, no one has the capacity to waste time, effort and revenue jumping between different sales and marketing tools that aren’t Group Editor: Judith Halkerston Tel: 01226 734639 jh@scriptmedia. co.uk Group production editor: Dominic Musgrave Tel: 01226 734407 dm@scriptmedia. co.uk

TRX® launches TRX Live™ virtual classes integrated, Ian added. “Keepme V2 presents a genuine step change in club technology, enabling operators to drive additional revenue and increase profitability at every stage of the membership lifecycle, as well as uncover revenue opportunities hidden in their data and seamlessly act on them.” Whether it’s re-engaging members who are slipping away, sending offers to members who are likely to purchase class packs, managing inside sales for services like PT and swim lessons or reaching out to ex-members to win them back, Keepme V2 helps operators achieve maximum revenue for every member in the club. “Who knows when the new normal will start to change, and what the next few months holds for this industry,” Ian concluded. “In the meantime, the operators who stay afloat will be those who use their data to its best advantage, and make every member count.”
TRX® – the global leader in functional training equipment, education and technology – is continuing to pave the way for innovation in the health and fitness industry with the UK-based launch of TRX Live™. TRX Live offers consumers a live and interactive virtual TRX training experience from the comfort and convenience of their own home at a time when gyms and physical training spaces are closed across the country in response to Covid-19. A team of world-class fitness professionals, led by UK celebrity trainers and brothers Niko Algieri and Jay Brockway, will be teaching TRX Live classes. Niko and Jay previously founded and operated the Equilibrium™ boutique fitness studio in London where the foundation was TRX training. TRX expects to rapidly expand the TRX Live class schedule and training team after this initial launch. Niko said: “We are thrilled to be launching TRX Live in the UK, allowing our community to train safely yet effectively at home at a time when fitness and wellbeing is of paramount importance. “Our team of TRX Live instructors are among the best in the world, and each instructor brings their own unique, hands-on, professional approach to TRX Training. “With TRX Live, one-to-one interaction
with our team is a key ingredient, ensuring correct technique, controlled tempo, and appropriate difficulty for our trainees.” TRX Live UK is a 50-minute intervalbased class, designed to push participants’ fitness to new horizons in an interactive virtual format by delivering a full-body strength and conditioning workout using body weight exercises and TRX’s proprietary Suspension Trainer™. Each interactive class is led by a TRX Live Instructor, with a maximum of 30 participants per session. This at-home training solution enables participants to strengthen and tone their body and improve their endurance by using the versatile TRX Suspension Trainer under the direction of a TRX Live trainer. TRX Live provides a comprehensive at-home training solution, empowering participants to set and reach new fitness goals without stepping foot from of their home. Classes will be taught by some of the leading names in fitness including Georgia Legg, Stephanie Warwick, Tom Cuff-Burnett, and Rae Clark. The team are available to provide realtime feedback and instruction to trainees throughout each session. TRX Live classes run from Monday to Saturday, with morning and evening slots available, and are priced at £10 per session.
Stuart is our latest lockdown hero OUR latest lockdown hero is Stuart Wilkinson who works at Sound Dynamics. He was nominated by his ‘partner in crime’ Emma Wilson. She said: “Stuart has absolutely worked tirelessly since March to make sure fitness professionals have the best equipment to take their classes online. “While others watched their favourite Netflix series or enjoyed the sunshine in the garden with their families during lockdown, Stuart was in the office every day, busy testing products and advising people from 6am to gone midnight on what they needed and how everything would work together to get the best results. “He’s gone well above and beyond the call of duty this year and has been many peoples saviour as they feared the worse for their businesses.
“If there’s so much of a mention of Zoom in a social media post, his name will be tagged because he’s helped so many instructors with this. “Stuart has also led the Sound Dynamics team during this period with nothing but positivity and strength, and together they’ve helped more than 3,000 fitness professionals get online, which has given the instructors the means to continue doing what they love for a living. Stuart Wilkinson needs some recognition for his efforts this year. He would never ask for it, but he really does deserve it.” Please send your nomination to events@scriptmedia.co.uk and we will be featuring some more of your stories in WorkOut magazine, and our WorkOut Weekly digital newsletter. Closing date for entries is Friday December 4.

Platform enables clubs to offer their own bespoke online services during lockdown A NEW, white label online fitness platform has launched, enabling health club operators, instructors and personal trainers to offer live streaming at the touch of a button, as well as pre-recorded training sessions and group exercise classes, all branded as their own. The easy-to-use, low-cost web and mobile web-based platform is already being used by more than 45 health clubs across the UK, including London’s Roehampton Club, The Marlow Club and The Health Club Collection. It can be set up in just a few hours and includes 50 pre-loaded training sessions, so operators can start offering their own branded virtual content straight away. What’s more, its comprehensive, built-in reporting dashboard allows operators to gather valuable membership data and insight, which can’t be obtained via Facebook Live or Zoom. Richard Thorpe, managing director of the Pavilion Club, said: “The Pavilion Club brand is important to both our reputation and our customers. “Being able to brand the platform as the Pavilion Club made our communications and content feel authentic and recognisable. “Being able to use our own expert instructors to deliver the classes also helps with customer engagement and keeps our members in touch with our staff, who are the heart and soul of any health club.” The platform is the brainchild of Lee Booth, founder and CEO of global tech company Venueserve. The company, which has a well-established reputation within the ticketing and sports membership sector, is taking its first steps into the fitness industry. Lee added: “Venueserve Fitness gives operators the
tools to offer a branded virtual membership, whether that’s as a free, ‘nice to have’ for existing members, up sold as an additional bolt on virtual membership or sold separately as a subscription-based online membership package for those who aren’t ready to visit a gym. “With gyms now closed for a second lockdown and Covid-19 restrictions looking long-term, our platform provides a hand-holding service, so that, literally at the touch of a button, instructors can live-stream their class or session. “The simplicity of Venueserve Fitness means no one
has to miss out, and the pre-recorded content means there’s plenty to choose from for every type of club and every type of member.” The backend reporting and payment system also means the app can be used by personal trainers or instructors, such as yoga teachers, who can use the subscribe, data capture function as their own CRM system. Live-streaming is unlimited and each session is saved to the platform and categorised so it can be played again and again. The instructor simply uses their phone (via an app) to live-stream to Venueserve Fitness’s servers and from there it is sent to the club’s own branded streaming site, which looks and feels like the club’s normal website. Fresh pre recorded content is also uploaded to the platform every week. Richard added: “Venueserve Fitness allows us to provide a ‘gym at home’ experience, simply, cost effectively and effortlessly. “Our live classes are an excellent way to allow potential new members to try out our sessions and meet our team, without committing to a full membership. We are now in the position to be able to sell virtual memberships as a stand-alone product, making the Pavilion Club available to more people, anywhere and at any time.” Prices start from £1 per member using the platform, per month and operators and PTs can choose to give this free, as an additional benefit to all or selective existing members/clients, up sell as a bolt on to their current membership or charge a virtual membership fee. Here’s how you can maintain your fitness regime during lockdown ON November 5 the UK was put into a second nationwide lockdown as a result of the spiralling Covid-19 pandemic, which has caused a huge amount of strain for many. While this second lockdown is unfortunate, the up side is that we now know what to expect and are able to take some learnings from our first time to refine our game plan. Many people interpreted the first lockdown to mean that their exercise goals had to pause, and their training needed to take a new focus. However, home workouts have proliferated this year and helped countless people stay on track and accountable, despite the unusual circumstances. With an at-home workout becoming the most normal part of the day, at F45, we encourage people to stay motivated and keep up with their fitness regimes. We have options to train virtually with your studio or on-demand through the Challenge app – to help keep people in routine, accountable to their goals and regularly doing something positive for both their body and their mind until it’s time to get back into the studio as a team again. Chief athletics director Nathan Mago from F45 Training (www.f45training. co.uk) offers his expert advice on how to keep up your fitness regime during the winter lockdown: Re-define your goals Setting clear goals is an important step in boosting your motivation and defining the path you should take to
reach your targets. Your original goals for this year of getting ready for that 10k fun run, losing weight for your sister’s wedding, or getting in shape before your big holiday might be momentarily on hold for now – however, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take time for yourself to get stronger and healthier. Write your new goals on sticky notes and stick them to your bathroom mirror so that you are reminded of them often, as it can be easy to forget during these difficult and ever-changing times. Talk to your trainers about how they can help keep you accountable and achieve your goals – you may even like to sign up to the 45 Day Challenge!
Stretching to avoid injury If you ask different experts and trainers in the fitness industry the benefits of stretching, you will likely get mixed answers. Some will tell you that stretching decreases the risk of injury, while others will warn you of the detrimental effects stretching may have on performance. The truth is that stretching has an important place as part of a robust training program, however, it must be integrated carefully as there are endless ways to incorporate stretching into your routine. The most common is during a warmup, cool-down, or as a completely separate training session. Each offers unique benefits and has important considerations. Overall, having adequate joint range of motion and mobility is essential for
moving well and performing exercises with correct technique as well as staying injury free. Taking 15-30 minutes to stretch out from a day hunched over your work computer on the dining table is a great way to unwind and relax. Check out one of our Calypso Kings or Mondrian 30 Recovery sessions on the F45 Challenge app.
Cut yourself some slack Many people are being hard on themselves for getting slightly out of their fitness routine due to the constant changes. Lockdown is such an unusual time and it’s okay to give yourself a break and be patient with finding a new routine each time the situation changes. Preparation is the key to staying on track, and if you need some handy tips to help get you going, here are some of our top ones: n No time? Book your sessions into your calendar for the same time each day. Most people will find getting a workout done and dusted in the morning is the best option, as they are more likely to feel tired at the end of the work day. n Oversleeping? Set your alarm for the same time every day and put your phone or clock out of reach so that you have to get up to turn it off. Lay out your workout clothes the night before with a sweat towel and your drink bottle. n Motivation running low? Enlist a virtual workout buddy! It could be a friend, a colleague, a cousin or someone that you would normally see at the gym. Make a “no excuses” pact to join a
virtual workout session together three to four times a week, and message each other regularly to keep each other accountable.
Try an at-home fitness programme Throughout the spring lockdown, many embraced home workouts, and it’s amazing what you can achieve. Much like designating a certain area of your house as a workspace can help give you a healthy separation between your work life and home life – setting up a dedicated workout space can also help encourage a regular workout routine. Have enough space for your exercise mat and some equipment (or creative alternatives), where you ideally can move forwards, backwards and side to side without restriction. Somewhere with a fresh air flow is preferable, and of course, something to prop your phone or laptop on so that you can follow along the workouts. Coming to your designated workout space regularly will make it more of a ritual and can help inspire you to keep up your routine. You may need to get creative with what you have around your house that could add a little extra resistance to your workout moves, and your trainers will also be able to provide you with some ideas. A filled backpack or shopping bag can be used for deadlifts or squats, water bottles or tin cans instead for dumbbell exercises, a basketball or a cushion instead of a medicine ball, and if you have some resistance bands handy – even better.

Fitness platform propels staff wellbeing initiative into final of 2020 HSJ Awards #DoingOurBit – a bespoke, free online fitness platform for NHS staff created in partnership with Active IQ, Study Active and fibodo – has helped to propel the Clinical Research Network West Midlands onto the shortlist for the Staff Engagement Award at the prestigious 2020 HSJ Awards. The CRN WM Staff Wellbeing Initiative comprises a suite of initiatives designed to help staff manage their own wellbeing by choosing from a range of opportunities to suit their personal needs, learning styles and work/life arrangements. A highlight of the programme this year is the launch of the #DoingOurBit Fitness Platform which comprises nearly 50 bespoke and personalised workouts donated by 30 personal trainers. Initially for the CRN WM staff, #DoingOurBit is now available to the wider NHS. By November 2020, 70 NHS organisations in England & Wales had signed up to offer the platform to more than 450,000 staff via www.fit4thefight. org/nhs-members-area and many more are expected to join. #DoingOurBit started as a passion project for Julie Davis, wellbeing lead and deputy chief operating officer at the CRN WM. Seeing the toll Covid-19 took on her colleagues, she set about sourcing some free workouts and relaxation sessions to
help them cope. The initiative caught the eye of The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust which wanted to offer the workouts to its staff of nearly 10,000. All of a sudden, Julie needed a bigger platform and professional support. She turned to training provider Study Active, awarding organisation Active IQ and fibodo to host her ambitious idea. “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Staff Engagement Award, recognising the collaborative efforts and dedication of our staff members over the last 12 months to
successfully implementing our Wellbeing Programme,” said Julie. “To be chosen among the other incredible nominees is a wonderful achievement and I have no doubt that our unique #DoingOurBit platform helped catch the judges’ eye. “This nomination has been a tremendous boost to staff at the Network and I am sure it will bolster our continued efforts to improve everyone’s wellbeing.” Now in its 40th year, the HSJ Awards is the largest annual benchmarking and recognition programme for healthcare.
Through a rigorous, fair and transparent judging process the awards produce a roll call of the best organisations, teams and people in the NHS and the wider health sector. CRN WM was shortlisted for the Award despite tough competition from more than 1,000 entries. It has been selected based on its ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that its project has had on patient and staff experiences within the health and/or social care sector. The ceremony takes place next March.

Online fitness – make sure you have the right insurance to protect your business By Neil Adebowale AS THE UK experiences a surge in retro-style at-home fitness not seen since Jane Fonda graced our DVD players, gym operators and equipment manufacturers are adapting fast to meet the ever-changing market needs. But innovation brings with it new risks – and operators need to connect with the right insurance advice to protect their evolving businesses. Following Covid-19, online fitness is here to stay. Gyms are operating both in bricks and mortar premises and online – from live-streamed classes to one-on-one personal training, and multi-channel classes to reach cover all bases. This can involve the creation of proprietary content, or sharing third-party content. Some have a library of videos teaching training techniques – which again may be home-grown or thirdparty. And, like pay-per-view live-streamed gigs, the online provision can in theory reach far higher numbers of participants. But inherent in all innovation is new risk. From February to April 2020, cyber attacks in some sectors increased by more than 200 per cent. And with cyber crime and data breaches hitting headlines, businesses are shoring themselves up against ever-evolving cyber risks. What if…? …a member injures themselves in their own home during a class? When you have no control over the environment, managing your liability is key. Are there sufficient warnings for the participants? It’s probably not feasible to do a risk assessment of each setting, but perhaps you can provide key tips on working out safely at home, including ensuring: n Adequate space to work out. n Suitable flooring. n Checks on equipment beforehand. n Enough distance between household members joining the class. …the platform crashes due to a hack/virus and you can’t deliver the service customers have paid for? …there’s a data breach? You may hold credit card numbers, addresses and medical information in your PARQ database. A breach could mean lawsuits and regulatory fines. …a scammer persuades your staff to share financial or personal information or make a transaction in a “phishing” attack? …you give the wrong advice during an online PT session because your camera view is limited?
result of viruses, network failure or damage, hacking or cyber-crime causing ‘down-time’. n Data extortion – protection against the threat of extortion as the result of ransomware, theft of data, or damage to your computer network. n Outsourcer problems – including cloud providers and overseas data processors. n Costs of restoring or recreating data. n Costs of minimising reputational damage – hiring a PR firm. One size doesn’t fit all in cyber insurance – it’s important to talk to your insurance adviser about your specific risk exposures so you can be more confident your insurance will deliver on its promise. We’ll provide a free RAG-rated report for you, outlining your network vulnerabilities.
How can insurance help? Getting the right insurance advice can make all the difference to the outcome of a claim – and to the financial robustness of your business. Public liability: explain to your adviser exactly what your activities are and check the policy for restrictions. Some providers have restrictions on online class numbers. We prefer to simply adjust the cover around the activities you want to deliver. Professional Indemnity: if your business is based on advice, it’s critical that you have professional indemnity insurance in place. Cyber liability: most responsible businesses know a cyber attack is a “when” not an “if”, and that cyber insurance is now key to the financial protection of any organisation. Cyber insurance protects in two main ways: n Liability for third party losses – privacy breach liability (“Third Party Cyber”) n Liability for your own losses – legal advice, forensics, fines (“First Party Cyber”). This can include protection against costs, expenses and liability arising from: n Breach of privacy or confidentiality. n Data breach costs – with the new General Data Protection Regulation, this is critical. n Regulatory fines or contractual damages. n Cyber liability – your liability for customer/user financial loss or denial of access. n Business interruption – for your own lost revenue as a
Myth-busting cyber insurance: 1. “We invest heavily in our IT security and data compliance… we don’t need cyber insurance.” Reality: No matter how much you invest in cyber security, there’s no such thing as 100 per cent security. Cyber attacks also aren’t all about IT – often your biggest risk exposure is the human element, so you need protection against the impact of phishing and social engineering attacks too. 2. “Our business outsources its IT, so we’ve removed exposure to risk.” Reality: Even if you outsource your IT, chances are you’re still liable. Assuming you’ll be successful in claiming back damages from a third-party is a risky gamble. 3. “We don’t collect any sensitive data, so there’s no need to worry about GDPR or cyber insurance.” Reality: Any business that relies on a computer system to operate, whether for business-critical activities or simply electronic banking, has a very real cyber exposure. 4. “Cyber attacks only affect big business – we’re too small to be a target.” Reality: Cyber criminals target the most vulnerable companies, not just the most valuable companies. 5. “Cyber risk is already covered by other types of insurance” Reality: Traditional insurance policies lack the depth and breadth of standalone cyber cover and won’t come with experienced cyber claims and cyber incident response capabilities.
