Frustrated consumers turn to social media
news
03
By Christina Eccles FRUSTRATED consumers are increasingly turning to social media to complain about issues such as customer service, a new report has revealed – but it’s not all bad news for companies which capitalise on their online presence. The report – Service Goes Social: how organisations can deliver customer service through social media – has been published by The Institute of Customer Service and is based on the views of 2,195 consumers and 12 in-depth interviews with senior customer service executives. The research found one in four social media users in the UK used platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Google+ to make a complaint over the past three months. It also discovered that if traditional methods for voicing dissatisfaction aren’t effective, 12 per cent of customers will use social media platforms to escalate their complaint. However, organisations should not fear the increased level of activity on social media, as the data goes on to find that two-thirds of customers describe their interactions as “a good experience”, with just 14 per cent suggesting their experience was less than positive. CEO of The Institute of Customer Service Jo Causon said: “We have reached a point where social media is not just a necessary component of a credible customer service strategy but one which offers powerful insights that drive better innovation, co-creation and collaboration. “To make this a reality, social media

needs to be a central part of a coherent, sustained and long-term focus on customer service strategy, something that many organisations are yet to do.” With customers aged 45-54 the most likely to share their experiences of an organisation through social media – closely followed by 18-24 year olds – the report suggests it is too easy for organisations to assume younger shoppers are the dominant force in social media, when evidence suggests its use is more widespread. And according to the research, organisations need to focus on a number of key factors to make sure a social media strategy is successful, including making sure employees are fully trained in how
social media works, empowered to make quick decisions and have the ability to exercise good judgement when dealing with customers. Jo added: “The shift from a transactional economy to a relationship economy has been influenced and is most visible through new channels such as social media. “Customers are no longer happy with one-way directional communication and expect to engage in conversations with the organisations they do business with. “Organisations that do this well have a competitive advantage over those that are slow to adopt. It’s all about choice and enabling the consumer to interact with the company in a way that they choose.”

Benjamin Donlan, a Footwear Design student at De Montfort University Leicester, has landed a three month work placement with Kurt Geiger at its UK base at Britton Street in London. Ben said: “It was a complete shock to get the job to be honest. To be going into my first job with such a great brand is a massive first step on the ladder for my career. “Just having the name Kurt Geiger on my CV will be great, I’m just looking forward to getting stuck in now and seeing how the design industry works from the inside.”

Senior lecturer in Footwear Design at DMU and one of Benjamin’s tutors, Philip Stewart, added: “Ben’s been very consistent throughout his three years, he really came out of his shell and started to show what a talent he was in his second year. “Kurt Geiger is obviously a very wellknown company and they’ve employed quite a few graduates from DMU in the past. With the skills and personality that he’s got Ben should fit in very well there. “There’s a queue of companies wanting to work with us because they know that they’ll get a lot of great designs and they also know it’s a chance to scout some of the talent here.”

Wesley Vernon OBE becomes new president By Christina Eccles PROFESSOR Wesley Vernon OBE has become the president of the Society of Shoe Fitters for the next two years. Wesley qualified as a podiatrist in 1980 and his accolades include gaining a PhD for footwear related research in 2000 and becoming a qualified shoe fitter through the society in 2009. He said: “During my time in office I would like to see the society continue to support the needs of our traditional membership – the footwear retailers – while at the same time reaching out to more practising health professionals, to promote the benefits of their
As part of the research process, the students were invited to visit the factory in Desborough to see firsthand how Goodyear Welted footwear is manufactured, which is a process originated within Northamptonshire.
Jonathan Church from Cheaney’s visited the University’s Avenue Campus and judged the students’ designs before declaring Laura the winner of the Leslie Church Scholarship Fund. Senior lecturer in footwear at the University of Northampton, Caroline Southernwood, said: “We are truly delighted to have the continued support from the prestigious Northamptonshire footwear brand Joseph Cheaney and Sons. “This vital industrial support gives our footwear students a real insight into commercial manufacture and design, also the importance of working to a tight brief.”
involvement with the society through education, testing, membership and inter-organisational collaboration. “I would particularly like to see more cross fertilisation of knowledge – for example through society presence and presentation at podiatry conferences and perhaps even considering hosting similar conference events ourselves. However I strongly believe that any moves in this direction should not be at the expense of our traditional membership. “I would also like to see more footwear retailers investing in their staff to give the public the best possible fit and the benefit of educated advice to accompany their purchase.” Wearing socks with sandals is the biggest summer fashion faux pas for Brits, according to a survey. 60 per cent of people who took part in the Cotton USA research rated this as their number one fashion mistake, followed by streaky fake tan and Y-front swimming trunks. Exhibition explores euphoria and pain of wearing shoes DESIGNS worn or associated with everyone from Mariliyn Monroe, to Queen Victoria and modern day footwear icon Sarah Jessica Parker are all represented at the exhibition, which runs until January 2016, as over 250 pairs of historic and contemporary shoes from around the world go on display – many of them for the first time. The exhibition, sponsored by Clarks and with support from Agent Provocateur and the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers, explores the agonising aspect of wearing shoes, as well as the euphoria and obsession they can inspire and allows visitors a glimpse into the V&A’s unrivalled shoe collection, which spans the globe and over 2,000 years of history.

for Moira Shearer in the 1948 film, The Red Shoes. Footwear for men and women by 70 named designers including Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo and Prada are also on display, with the exhibition shown over two floors to explore everything from how shoes are designed to how they make the wearer feel and why they can become such collectable items. The luxurious, boudoir design of the ground floor gallery examines three themes: transformation, status and seduction. Transformation presents shoes that are the things of myth and legend, opening with different cultural interpretations of the Cinderella story from across the globe. Status reveals how impractical
shoes have been worn to represent privileged and leisurely lifestyles – their design, shape and material can often make them unsuitable for walking – and how shoes also dictate the way in which the wearer moves, how they are seen and even heard. Within Seduction, the shoes represent an expression of sexual empowerment or a passive source of pleasure. Like feet, shoes can be objects of fetishism. In contrast, the laboratory style setting of the first floor gallery is dedicated to dissecting the processes involved in designing and creating footwear, laying out the story from concept to final shoe. This is enhanced by animations showing how layers are assembled to create finished shoes. The displays show how makers combine traditional craftsmanship with technological innovation and how they unite function with art. The last section of the exhibition looks at shoes as commodities and collectibles. Highlights of six different collections are presented: two historic collections, a high end collector, a high street collector, a ‘sneaker head’ and a pair of shoes from Imelda Marcos’ collection. Expert offers online advice to retailers By Christina Eccles
A LEADING retail expert has offered his advice to bricks-and-mortar retailers on how to respond to the online challenge. As Amazon.com celebrates its 20th anniversary, leading retail expert Professor Heiner Evanschitzky, professor and chair of marketing at Aston University, outlined four key lessons for traditional retailers to help them adapt and survive in a retail environment increasingly dominated by the online players. 1) Having a web presence is a must: Consumers shopping habits have changed, with online research before purchase now the norm. Without an online presence, a retailer will be far less likely to find a place in consumer thinking. 2) Make your stores a place to experience products: An online presence is a necessity, but a physical presence is a strength as well. For large purchases, or for complex products, a customer may still like the reassurance of seeing the product, the chance to ‘try before you buy’ or the support of a helpful salesperson. 3) Share retail space with complementary businesses: The days of the large retail space – whether the out of town outlet or the high street store – are behind us. Supermarkets especially are finding themselves with prime locations without the footfall to justify them. By sharing retail space with complementary businesses, retailers can reduce their overheads and enjoy the benefits of increased footfall. 4) Focus on a clear proposition:
Professor Heiner Evanschitzky
With online retailers able to operate on tight margins and keep even niche items in stock, a traditional retailer can no longer complete to be everything for everyone. Instead, they must focus their proposition and be specialists in their chosen area. You can never beat the cost and convenience of an online retailer, but you can provide a higher quality product and better customer service. Professor Evanschitzky said: “Amazon has had an incredible 20 years, and already has a legacy as one of the disruptive innovators that set the standard for online retailing and changed the face of the industry, as well as consumer shopping habits, forever. “But it’s not all been plain-sailing for Amazon – they succeed because of their size and because of their pace of growth, but their margins are very low and they have actually lost money in two of the last five years. “When competing with a behemoth capable of operating with tight margins, bricks and mortar retailers – even those that are established household names – must be smart.” Luxury footwear designer Freya Rose has unveiled her latest creation. Mara is a stunning slingback shoe fit for any occasion. Made with silk organza and silver kid leather, the delicate and sparkling detail is hand embellished in the brand’s London studio using Swarovski crystals and hand beaded crystal flowers. Wearers can complement the look with matching hair pins and belt.

Book offers people with diabetes foot health advice LONDON based podiatrist Peter Allton has written a book on the importance of foot health in people living with diabetes. Undefeeted by Diabetes is aimed at those with diabetes, those at risk of developing diabetes, their family members, friends and carers and focuses on helping people with diabetes live in what Peter calls the ‘diabetic sweet spot’ – the safest possible position for them.
The industry is gearing up for the Who’s Next and Premiere Classe trade shows, which take place from September 4 to 7 at the Parc des Expositions, Porte de Versailles, Paris, in Halls one, two and three. Who’s Next brings together all the collections of French and international ready-to-wear across five areas: fame, private, trendy, urban and studio. Premiere Classe showcases next season’s accessory trends and will include high-end jewellery, footwear, leather goods and many accessory designers and labels that are specifically chosen for their creativity, originality and style.
The ‘sweet spot’ refers to a combination of knowledge and awareness of their personal risk and taking appropriate action that helps them to live full and healthy lives. Peter said: “If someone with diabetes develops a foot ulcer, their survival chances are worse than those of someone with prostate or breast cancer. “A person with a foot ulcer has an 80 per cent chance of not surviving

Legero Schuhfabrik GesmbH, with its headquarters in Graz (Styria), was founded in 1872 and is majority-owned by the Stolitzka family. The company’s headquarters is both the creative and logistics centre for the development of the LEGeRO and Superfit brands. The enterprise operates its own production facilities in Europe, employs close to 1,000 people worldwide and is an important player in the European shoe market. Modern appeal, technology and naturalness all blend into timeless comfort with LEGERO – the lightweight shoe – in the new Spring Summer 2016 season. Sporty, modern appeal is the universal theme with silence, move and relax representing three different looks. Managing director of LEGeRO Rudolf Hampl said: “Modern appeal, technology and naturalness all blend into timeless comfort with LEGeRO shoes – this unique symbiosis is much appreciated by our customers and, above all, by our partners in
specialised retail.” Head of design Martina Keller added: “Comfortable shoes and sandals for the everyday urban jungle remain timeless and moreover embrace a multitude of fashion trends in the SS 2016 season. Once more, we opt for comfortable designs, soft materials, anatomically shaped footbeds and – in many models – GORE-TEX SURROUND for all-around microclimate comfort inside the shoe, come rain or shine.” features

New range is steeped in nature FRODDO’S Spring/Summer 2016 collection features more than 500 models with various combinations of colours and detailing. The extensive range of shoes, sneakers, ballet shoes, moccasins and sandals for kids covers the entire season and offers something for every occasion. An additional advantage of the new collection is that most styles come with insoles made from recycled antistatic material, containing an activated charcoal and antibacterial substance. Extremely lightweight, durable and anatomically shaped for an anti-shock effect. Froddo’s commitment to quality starts long before the shoe is designed and manufactured. The first step is the careful selection of materials – only of the highest quality, certified and healthy. Certified materials guarantee the protection of human health and the environment. Style, anatomy, flexibility, comfort and love are the main features of the new Froddo collection. The colourful materials, threedimensional flowers and whacky colour combinations make this collection the most fun one ever.

Besides the great designs, this season Froddo offers many other innovative features such as the additional insoles for optimum width fitting.
The Froddo spring summer 2016 season also offers a prewalkers’ line – delicate little shoes with flexible soles and soft leather. With chrome free leather, water soluble glues and vegetable, certified materials, they protect the feet and allow natural development. Special on the inside, personalised on the outside, Froddo trainers are tailor made for kids. Froddo knows that every pair of feet, just like every child, is different. Therefore every trainer should also be different and unique. So Froddo again made it possible for kids to personalise them. Every purchase of Froddo trainers includes a little gift; a special marker pen for the personalisation of the back of the shoe, which will delight the youngsters and inspire their imagination and creativity. Marker pens are easy to wipe off. In this way kids are able to decorate the back of their favourite trainers however they like and as many times as they want.

Superfit assumes ‘big responsibility’ for children’s feet FOR roughly 60 years, the Austrian brand Superfit has been assuming “big responsibility for your feet”. The company is a long-standing European market leader in the field of children’s shoes. Every year, approximately four million pairs are manufactured and sold in over 40 countries worldwide. Twice a year, two collections are launched, each comprising roughly 130 models and over 500 colour options. The Superfit brand is a property of Legero Schuhfabrik GesmbH headquartered in Graz (Styria). The Spring/Summer 2016 Collection reflects the motto “We have the right shoes for all needs of children and for any weather condition of the spring/summer season”, no matter whether early, late or high season. The multifaceted new collection is composed of the four central themes: Street Sport; Casual Cool; Pastel Pretty and Heat Happy. Many models will again feature the time-tried GORE-TEX SURROUND technology: the air-permeable,
breathable SURROUND models are perfect for kids, since 30 per cent of the sole is open, thus reducing sweating to an absolute minimum. Managing director of Superfit Rudolf Hampl said: “We continue to follow our credo: high-quality shoes combined with a fair and stable pricing system, and dealers respect us for this. “The sales figures for the first quarter of 2015, which show clearly that our dealers were very successful in selling Superfit products, allow us to face the new season with confidence.”

A retailer’s guide to planning for Christmas By Ian Tomlinson, Cybertill MOST retailers have all of their Christmas stock ordered by now, which means it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to promote it. We’ve created a step-by-step Christmas marketing guide to give retailers a helping hand. September is where the campaign planning really starts. Set a diary task to spend a day reviewing last year’s marketing efforts and how they affected sales. Book the day away from the store so you don’t get distracted. Plan the Christmas section on your website and ensure it’s robust. Check last year’s Google Analytics. Is it scalable? If traffic spikes will it be able to cope? If not, take action now. In early October, plan your key dates before and after Christmas. Review, refine and update on last year’s campaigns. Decide on specific goals for your marketing campaign based on past performance. Potential themes include Black Friday, Wish Lists, Flash Sales, 12 Days of Christmas, Gift Guides etc. By late October you should be getting your graphics ready for your campaigns including your website, social media, in

store and marketing emails. Next, create and beta test the Christmas section on your website to make sure it all works correctly before it goes live.
A NEW ‘Footwear and Fitting’ qualification course from the Society of Shoefitters will be launched on August 1.
In early November, launch the Christmas section on your website. Start building and testing marketing emails by creating a dummy list of internal contacts to send them to.
It will educate health professionals and retail staff about the footwear industry, products and how to fit footwear to a professional standard.
In mid-November, target early birds by encouraging consumers to get their shopping done early. Encourage a sense of urgency by reminding them there’s only one pay day left before Christmas.
As well as a helpful introduction and two practical Workshop days, the course is divided into four modules for podiatrists and five for retail staff:
By early December, your Christmas campaigns should be in full swing. Time to monitor your campaigns against stock levels – are you promoting the right things? Tweak marketing collateral if you need to. In late December, try to create a sense of urgency again – send out reminders of opening times and last online order dates. Consider promoting a list of your last minute ‘hero’ gifts. If you’re doing Boxing Day sales, ensure promotions are ready and scheduled. In early January, promote sales and send out your post-Christmas messages e,g. “Did you get what you

really wanted? If not, treat yourself to it now!” Now relax, before analysing your sales in detail and starting the process all over again. This is an abridged version of Cybertill’s Christmas Retail Guide. If you would like a copy of the full version please visit www.cybertill.co.uk/xmas-guide
Measurement, Gauges, Tools of the Trade. Fitting – Putting it all together. The additional module for retail staff covers relevant anatomy, development, gait and problem feet. New device launches on Kickstarter
A NEW wearable device for runners has launched on Kickstarter, with a goal to raise $100,000.
TUNE, created by Portugal-based Kinematix, is a simple, easy to use wearable that goes beyond measuring basic stats such as pace or speed, but also measures each foot's ground-contact time and heelcontact time. It is the only wearable on the market that monitors in-shoe both feet simultaneously during a run to get the relevant parameters that allow the assessment of running technique. It also provides an individualised exercise plan based on the analysis of each runner's personal profile and the patterns detected during runs and training.
Tracey still juggles her full-time job in recruitment alongside her brand, but is hoping to eventually pursue her passion full time. She commented: “It was only February that I started out, I was nobody.
Tracey Beaumont, owner of high class brand Beaumont Shoes, released her first collection in February after completing a shoe making workshop in Hackney.
I never thought I’d be where I am now so quickly and, because I’ve done so well it makes me want it even more.”
She said: “I haven’t been to fashion college or anything, but I’ve always had a big interest in shoes and fashion.
The full collection of Beaumont shoes is available to buy online and in various boutiques in Soho and Birmingham.
I did a course in Hackney called ‘I can make shoes’ and that’s where it’s all started.
September will see the release of a new collection of shoes with bags to match.
“If you don’t have a degree, you can still pursue your dreams.” The shoes are branded as high end high heels – with this season’s ‘Cheetah High’ and
‘Peacock’ proving two of the most popular styles from the collection. Fans of the shoes include TOWIE’s Lydia Bright and charity campaigner and presenter Katie Piper.

Tracey added: “It’s the best thing ever, I love it. I can’t wait to do it full time, nothing makes me happier than going into the factory and looking at the leather.”
