Shop owner ready to put up £20k to rejuvenate town

By Dominic Musgrave A HOLMFIRTH shop owner is looking for others in the town to join him in creating an expert Dragons’ Den style panel in a bid to rejuvenate the town.

Chris Girvan, who has run The Gift Horse on Huddersfield Road for the last 25 years, came up with the idea after reading last month's Holme Valley Review front page story where MP Jason McCartney personally invited retail guru Mary Portas, of Mary Queen of Shops fame, to visit the town.

Chris is prepared to invest up to £20,000 into an initiative if others are prepared to do the same because he believes the answer to Holmfirth's problems lies closer to home.

He added: “While I think it is a very good idea to invite Mary Portas to the town I doubt it will happen because she is a very busy lady.

“We need to do something for

ourselves and cannot expect the local council or Government to do it for us. There are enough successful business people in Holmfirth that if we could somehow get it together I think we could really do some good. What we can offer that an out of town shopping centre or retail park cannot is the quality of personal service, very much in the Mary Portas way of thinking, and this is something that we should be promoting to make people know we are here, especially now Last of the Summer Wine has finished.”

Chris’ idea is to have a group of local business people who would each put an amount of money into a pot so that it totals around £100,000. Anybody with an idea for a new business venture in the town would write their proposal and, if the panel liked it, they would invest in it for a percentage.

He added: “There would have to be a confidentiality agreement

signed before we met to ensure that no ideas were pinched, but there has to be executives who took early retirement and have a substantial amount of money, budding entrepreneurs or graduates out there who have ideas but no capital to do anything with them.

“The banks would probably put up between 50 and 70 per cent for a new business, and we would put up the remainder for a percentage if it was something we were confident in and thought we could make work.

“I was in the same boat many years ago so would be happy to be involved if others join me. I had ideas but no capital so I know how tough it can be, but I love the place and it has been really good to me.”

LOCAL news reader Christine Talbot will open an event at Honley cricket club in aid of the Dementia UK charity.

The Calendar presenter will be at T on the Pitch on September 11, which promises an afternoon of entertainment for all the family.

As well as stalls, circus skills, a barbecue and entertainment, the event will also feature performances from the Yorkshire Traction Honley Brass Band sponsored by One17Design.

Tickets costing £4 for adults and £1 for children are available from the Honley branch of the Yorkshire Building Society and Kirklees Admiral Nurses.

Huw remembered in friendly football match

By Dominic Musgrave FAMILY and friends of Huw Thatcher remembered his love of football with a friendly match between Brighouse Town FC and a Holme Valley XI which finished 2-1 to the home side.

Huw, 14, died in March from an undetected brain aneurysm after collapsing during a Sunday morning match for Hepworth United at Brighouse.

Since his death, the Huw Thatcher Trust has held events to raise money for brain illness research, to celebrate his life and to build a lasting legacy.

Vice-chairman of Brighouse Town Ray Mclaughlin said: “March 13 was a very sad day for everyone involved in football in the area and in particular for Huw’s family and friends.

“But the Huw Thatcher Trust is building a positive legacy in recognition of a player who graced this pitch with class on a number of occasions as he did at many other pitches around this part of Yorkshire.

“Huw was a strong, skilful, competitive and honest team mate and oppo-

“Huw, you will never be forgotten by us at Brighouse Town football club or by your family and friends in Huddersfield and beyond.”

The Holme Valley team included former Huddersfield Town players Andy Booth, Rob Edwards and Martyn Booty.

Joining them were representatives of most of the amateur football clubs based in the Valley.

A statement on the Trust’s website said: “It was an evening of hope – and with a clear common purpose of showing support for Huw and his trust.

“The support from our friends at Brighouse Town FC, the Holme Valley clubs and the three former Huddersfield Town players showed the local football community at its best.

“It was at times an emotional evening but, as one of Huw’s friends said, it enabled us to find some kind of closure in a supportive and positive atmosphere.”

The match, sponsored by Dual Seal Glass, was the idea of players and officials at Brighouse Town FC who have been particularly supportive to Huw’s family and the Trust. Brighouse play in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

A crowd of around 175 enjoyed a good humoured match, which raised £1,000 and featured a minute’s applause for Huw before the kick off.

Police appeal for witnesses after Milnsbridge assault POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman was racially abused and assaulted in the Milnsbridge area.

At half past midnight on August 22 the 45-year-old local woman was walking along Lipscombe Road when she saw a small group of men and women arguing.

As the woman walked by the group,

she asked two of the women involved in the argument if they were OK. She was then racially abused by the group.

As she carried on walking along Lipscombe Road, a dark coloured saloon car pulled up alongside her. A white man got out of the car and also racially abused the woman before punching and kicking

her. He then drove off, leaving her with facial injuries that required treatment at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The victim described the man who assaulted her as white, slim, around 6'3" and with darkcoloured shaved hair. Nursery staff raise cash in memory of young mum STAFF at a New Mill nursery have raised over £1,000 in memory of a young mum who died from cancer earlier this year.

A team of seven nursery nurses and one parent from Barnaby’s Day Nursery on Sheffield Road completed the 5K Race for Life in honour of Claire Clegg, who lost her fight against cervical cancer at Western Park Hospital in Sheffield on April 1 aged just 24.

Claire and husband Richard have a young daughter who attends Barnaby’s.

Team member Sarah Stroud explained why they took part. “We wanted to do something for the family so we collected sponsorship money from friends, family and other parents at the nursery.

“We had tee-shirts made with Claire’s picture on to show we were running for her. We’re on target to have over £1,000 by the time all the money is collected in.

“It was a horrible wet, windy day at Leeds Road playing fields which didn’t make the run any easier, but we all finished and were proud we’d done it together as a group for Sarah.”

Every year Race for Life attracts thousands of runners who take part in organised sponsored runs held all over the country. All the money raised goes to charities researching and fighting cancer.

Team seeks new players HEPWORTH United Rangers under 12s football team is looking for new players to join training in readiness for the coming season.

The team, made up of boys who will be starting school year 7 in September, will start training at Thongsbridge Tennis Club on Friday evenings from early September and plays matches on Saturday or Sunday mornings.

All new players will be welcomed.

Sam conquers Kilimanjaro

By Dominic Musgrave AN Upperthong man has celebrated the end of his degree by conquering Mount Kilimanjaro during a six-week trip to Tanzania.

Sam Otterburn, 21, was part of a group of 22 Durham University students that spent six days reaching the summit and descending the 19,340 foot mountain.

They spent the remainder of their time working on building and teaching projects to improve the lives of local people in remote towns and villages.

Sam, who has just completed

his three-year Social Science degree, told the Holme Valley Review that all members of the group reached the top of the mountain.

He added: “Reaching the summit was such a great feeling, especially when you've been walking for the best part of 24 hours. The view was great. Following the climb the group travelled to Zanzibar for a long weekend to relax and recharge before we began our volunteering work.

“We went on to spend two weeks doing charity work in Tanzania, just outside of Arusha.

The group split in half and worked between two projects.”

Sam first helped to lay the cement floor and plaster the walls of the hall of an infant school called Tunami, which was used as a temporary classroom as construction moved onto the various parts of the school. It also doubled up as a church for the local community.

In the second week Sam’s group went further out of Arusha to erect a fence and paint the main building that contained the bedrooms for the children at the Precious Orphanage. The building work and equipment had run massively over budget, so the group put in extra money of their own to finish the project.

Sam added: “The group that went out was part of the Durham University Charities Kommittee (DUCK). In total, we raised around £34,500 for Save the Children and £3,450 each for the school and the orphanage.

“One of the things that really struck me was how such a small sum of money could really make a huge difference in these projects.

“We were told in the Tunami school that the main problem that they faced, apart from funding, was guaranteeing teachers coming to the school each day. It would cost £40 per month to pay a teacher’s wages, who would

teach around fifty children each day.

“I am now looking to raise more money for this school over the following years and hopefully be able to donate enough money to provide an additional teacher, as they currently have one and competition to go to the school is hugely oversubscribed.”

The DUCK expedition plans to return to Tanzania to help more local charities and potentially continue to work with the Tunami project, which is still in its infancy of construction, to try and establish a long term relationship and propel the scheme forwards.

Safety fears amid traffic problems in Holmfirth

By Christina Eccles AN INCIDENT involving a huge lorry caused chaos in Holmfirth as traffic problems continue to worsen in the centre of town.

Passers-by gathered outside to watch the scene as the vehicle, which had been trying to turn left got stuck at the traffic lights on Victoria Street.

Owner of The Old Bridge Bakery, Greg Christosi saw what happened. He said: “Because the road is narrow, the big lorries trying to go left find it difficult.

“This one got stuck and because it could not reverse back or forward, it caused chaos.

“This one nearly hit a pole by Charlesworths and if somebody had been stood there, they could have been killed. It created big queues and it took a long time to clear the traffic.

“I’m worried something’s going to happen soon. There have been a few near misses.”

Local people have been airing their concerns for months about how the change in sequence of the lights and the narrowing of the road is impacting on the town.

New tenant sought for almshouse ONE of New Mill’s almshouses is vacant and waiting for a new tenant to move in.

Hirst Cottage Homes, the charitable trust which looks after the Roundhouses alms cottages on Sheffield Road, wants to hear from people who might be interested in living there in return for a small rent.

The cottage is within walking distance of the village centre, has one bedroom, kitchen, living room, shower room and a small front garden. It can be rented by a single person or couple aged over 55 who currently live within the Holme Valley.

The houses were built in 1912 by the Hirst family, local mill owners and philanthropists.

They were later left in trust for the on-going benefit of people in the valley, and renovated recently by the trust. The Christian tradition of almshouses for the poor dates back to the 10th century.

Despite ever-increasing property prices and rents, the trustees have found it difficult to find tenants for the houses in recent years.

Brake supports campaign discourages people from coming into Holmfirth, but also that someone might get injured or worse be killed.

And he said although there have been meetings between local business owners and councillors, nothing has yet been changed.

He added: “We had a meeting with the councillors and people

in charge of the traffic lights about a month and a half ago and they promised to put it right, but we haven’t seen anything yet.

“When everyone comes back from their holidays, I want to have another meeting and get some explanations.

“It’s not just the local businesses that are being affected, it

could also be lives, which are irreplaceable. That’s my worry.”

Greg added he is calling for another meeting in about two weeks time where he hopes to get answers on the traffic issues, which he says include inconsistency in the timings of the lights, which seem to let different numbers of cars through each time.

HUDDERSFIELD based road safety awareness charity, Brake, has got behind Olympic rower James Cracknell’s campaign ‘use your head, use a helmet’.

James, who was hit on the head by a truck wing mirror while cycling in America, credits wearing a helmet for saving his life.

And Brake, Holme Valley Review's nominated charity for 2011, spoke out in support of cycle helmets on CBBC Newsround – appealing to cyclists of all ages to always wear a helmet, as well as calling for Government investment in road engineering to help protect cyclists.

Pupils go on patrol to police traffic LEARNING to be a police traffic officer isn’t strictly on the national curriculum. But pupils from Netherthong did just that when they responded to car trouble outside their school.

They went on patrol complete with bright yellow jackets, clipboards and police hats to make sure parents in cars were obeying the rules outside Netherthong Primary School when they dropped off their children in the morning.

Deputy headteacher Mark Crouch explained: “We’ve got a ‘drop and go’ zone outside the school but we have some parents who insist on parking in it and that just clogs up the whole road. There’s also some

who try to turn their cars around in the school entrance which is bad because there’s just not enough room. Both these things can make the road outside the school very dangerous.”

The eight pupils on patrol were shown the ropes by local Police Community Safety Officers Jill Chamberlain and Keith Hollick. Keith told the Review: “It’s a good idea to get the kids involved in car safety because then they can tell their parents what they’re doing wrong.

“We’ve shown the kids how to speak to the adults and point out where there’s a problem. It seems to be more effective than when we do it.”

Gardeners prepare to show off the fruits of their labours STUNNING displays of flowers and mouthwatering fruits and vegetables will be on display at Hepworth Garden Club’s annual show on September 3.

Each year, the show attracts local gardeners, keen to show off the fruits of their labours.

As well as garden produce, the show will have other categories including baking and confectionery, cake decoration, handicrafts and photography.

There’s also three age groups for children’s entries.

Each adult entry costs 20p and children can enter for free.

Produce will be displayed in Hepworth Village Hall from 10.30am, with judging taking place between 12.15pm and 3.30pm. Doors will open to the public after the judging is complete and the prizes will be awarded from 4pm.

The show will conclude with an evening at Hepworth Sports and Social club where any donated or left-over entries will be auctioned in aid of the Garden Club.

Triathlon tribute to TV favourite

By Sandie Marshall THE increasingly popular sport of triathlon is coming to the Holme Valley in October.

Friends Dave Armitage and Ian Davies are organising Last of the Summer Tri, a sprint triathlon which will start and finish in Holmfirth on Sunday October 2. The name is part homage to the famous TV programme and also reference to the fact the event will be one of the summer season’s very last triathlons held anywhere in the UK. Dave and Ian are both ex-valley residents who lived in Holme village and Wooldale respectively. Both have completed triathlons elsewhere and wanted to see more opportunities for the sport in Yorkshire.

Dave said: “We started off planning for October 2012 but we’ve had such a good reaction that we decided to bring it forward and do it this year. There’s capacity for up to 175 people to take part, so we’re hoping it will be quite a major event.”

The triathlon will begin at Holmfirth pool with a 400 metre swim – 20 lengths of the pool.

Contestants will then jump on their bikes for a 20k ride which will take them from the town centre to New Mill and towards Honley before heading back into Holmfirth. There they will ditch the bikes and complete the event with a 5k run again via New Mill and Thongsbridge and

The event is being advertised locally and also through national triathlon magazines, so the two organisers are hoping it will attract contestants from all over.

Experience at previous triathlons is not necessary – although Dave admits a good level of fitness is required. “It would be a good first event for anyone interested in getting into triathlon.

“No one is good at all three elements – that’s what makes the sport such a good challenge, although a 12-week programme of training is recommended for a complete begin-

Cash boost for bid to restore historic well

By Sandie Marshall HONLEY Civic Society has taken a big step forward in its project to restore the town’s historic public water well.

The council’s Town and Valley Committee has agreed to spend £3,000 to clean, repoint and seal the stone work of the well, which is sited on Honley’s main street below the post office.

The Society hopes this is stage one of a bigger restoration project which will see a decorative light installed and the well filled with water once again. The well is the location of Honley’s first ever gas street light installed in December 1858 allowing the town’s people to collect water during the hours of darkness.

As the only public source of clean water, its social importance to Honley was

once huge. An inscription on the stonework dated 1796 reads: “Any person who damages these wells or defiles the water incurs a penalty of ten shillings” – a very significant amount of money in the late 18th century.

Society member Alec Wallace has been working on the plans to restore the well for three years. His main task was to establish ownership.

He told the Review: “No one owns it privately so, because it’s sited on the public footpath, we had to get the council to accept responsibility for its upkeep – that took quite a while.

“We’ve also tried to find the source of the well’s water. It’s fed by springs but we don’t totally know where the water comes from. It’s been dry for several months but we’re hoping that clean-

ing and sealing it will at least allow the rain to stay in there. We’ve been working with Yorkshire Water to try to solve this one.

“At the moment it’s a bit of a local rubbish bin so the task will be to keep it clean and tidy once the work has been done.”

The risk of vandalism is the main issue in the plans to install a new light.

Alec and the Society want to see a replica gas lantern for decoration only, but admit it could become a target for yobs. “We need to find a way of installing something that will be as vandal-proof as possible,” he added.

The £3,000 council spend was approved by the three Holme Valley North councillors, Terry Lyons, Beryl Smith and Edgar HolroydDoveton.

Move to boost Kate’s profile A HOLMFIRTH-based company has been helping Yorkshire folk singer Kate Rusby to get closer to her fans.

Pure Records, which represents Kate, has brought on board internet marketing experts WSI Yorkshire, to boost Kate’s online profile and open up communication with fans.

As part of the social media plan, the team at WSI Yorkshire have set up a Facebook page and Twitter account from which Kate will post comments and reply to fans. The company will also be responsible for maintaining her YouTube channel and uploading images onto popular photo managing and sharing site Flickr.

Owner Steve Harvey Franklin said: “We are delighted to be working with Pure Records to increase the online profile of the very talented Kate Rusby.

Katina to give snapshot of Holmfirth photography KIRKLEES Museums collections officer Katina Bill will give an illustrated talk on the history of Holmfirth photography and film pioneers Bamforth on Thursday September 8 at Holmfirth Library.

Katina’s talk will cover the history of the company from its early days in portrait photography in the 1870s, through lantern slides and films and moving on to postcards, greetings cards and calendars. She will take a look at the house artists, especially Douglas Tempest and Arnold Taylor and the house style of the comic postcards in more detail.

She will also describe the Bamforth family business, with everyone involved in some way, and how they managed to combine artistic talent and an eye for the latest trends with solid business acumen. From a studio in Holmfirth they managed a global sales business, with offices in London and New York.

Admission to the talk, which will begin at 7.30pm, is free but advance booking is required by calling 01484 222430.

Trombones made by a Honley firm are being played all over the world. Dominic Musgrave found out more.

Why Michael is instrumental to leading trombonists around the world ...

MICHAEL Rath began developing his own brand of trombones more than 15 years ago, and he regularly sends them as far afield as America, Japan, Australia and Europe.

His interest in music began as a youngster at school in Windsor, and it grew further following a meeting with his careers adviser, who found him a place on a music technology course in London.

From there he worked for a company in the capital making French horns, but continued to do a lot of custom work for friends who played the trombone, which led to him moving north to set up his business.

Michael Rath Brass Musical Instruments ltd now employs 11 people, and are played by some of the leading players around the world.

Michael said: “We are the only remaining company in the UK that manufactures trombones, and are currently produced six or seven a week that we send all over the world.

“All the instruments are hand made because every player’s requirements such as their concept of sound, instrument response, physical makeup, technique and approach are different, “We are always trying to grow the business, and are developing a student range which we hope will enable youngsters to start on a

really good instrument. That way they will have more chance of continuing playing and being successful in future. It also introduces the brand name to players at an early age.

“Government cuts have meant funding that was previously given to every education authority to enable every child to learn a musical instrument has been moved, which I know has left a bad feeling. But we are confident that with the new range, which starts from £400, that there will still be plenty of people that will want to play.”

Michael was one of 10 instrument makers that was asked to create musical instruments out of scrap for a Proms concert that took place at the Royal Albert Hall in July for a documentary to be aired on BBC Four in the near future.

He made three instruments using scrap he picked up from a local yard that included copper piping, lamp shades and a blender.

He added: “I believe it all started at a party when the challenge was set of putting together an orchestra that would play three classical pieces on scrap including Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.

“It was a very sentimental project for me because as a teenager I learned the 1812 Overture so I knew the piece inside out.

“We were treated like royalty on the day and I was very proud that

“It was completely different to anything we had ever done before, although it probably took up more

of our time than it should.

“It made me realise how fantastic the staff I have here are because people just think you blow into an instrument and it makes a noise, but there is a lot more to it than that.”

Gary is preparing to unveil his pub with the wow factor

By Christina Eccles THE new owner of a Holmfirth pub has reassured locals he wants to put the business back into the heart of the community.

Gary Smith has bought the pub, formally known as The White Hart, in the centre of town.

Gary, a former headteacher who now works as an education consultant, has renamed it Brambles and, along with partner Karen Tomlinson, is working hard to transform it into his vision of what a pub should be.

He explained: “At the moment, a lot of pubs are being refurbished and run by larger corporations and they all look a bit ‘samey’. I feel as an entrepreneur and businessman, I can create something unique that large breweries may struggle to do.”

Gary is keen to point out he is not opening a restaurant – instead he sees Brambles as a traditional pub, which at certain parts of the day, will sell good food.

He added: “During the day it will be very much like a cafe bar and offer a small,

Gary Smith high quality menu. Then later on there will be a cut off point, which will probably be early evening, where there is going to be no food.

“I want people to look at Brambles and see a pub where they can go and meet friends. There are already lots of really nice restaurants around Holme Valley.

What village centres need is a good old fashioned pub.

“I don't see myself as being competition for the other places in Holmfirth. If there is another successful venue, it adds to the possibility of people coming here for a night out.”

The pub is being completely refurbished and Gary hopes it will be open by mid to late October, giving him plenty of time to be up and

running before what will hopefully be a busy Christmas period.

And he added, although some pubs have struggled to compete in a difficult climate, he believes Brambles will have what it takes to do well.

“At the heart of my business plan is the fact I truly believe people will still go to the pub – except they want the highest quality and levels of service. But it's got to look stunning inside and have that wow factor, otherwise the whole plan does not work.

“This is a pub for the whole community. We do not want it to be an exclusive wine bar and our prices will reflect that.

“There has been a real buzz around the village and people who have come and talked to me have been very interested in what I’m doing.

They are happy and relieved it’s not a pub from a chain – they want something different.

“Holmfirth has got a strong local identity and sense of community and I would like to think that Brambles can be part of that.”

Choir lines up virtuoso for concert NEW Mill Male Voice Choir has lined up another international star for its latest concert.

Following on from a hugely successful night with Julian Lloyd Webber last year, the choir has announced that its guest at Huddersfield Town Hall on October 8 will be the trumpet virtuoso Alison Balsom.

Alison was recently named ‘Female Artist of the Year’ at the Classic BRIT awards ceremony in the Albert Hall, a repeat of her success in 2009.

At the ceremony she played pieces from her hugely successful album,

Italian Concertos. It has been a busy year for Alison with appearances in the USA, Brazil and Germany – the Choir are delighted that she will add Huddersfield Town Hall to her impressive list of concert venues for 2011.

Accompanying Alison at the Town Hall will be international organ soloist David Goode. David has established a close working relationship with Alison in recent years, appearing in concerts and recitals throughout Europe.

He was a featured solo artist at this year’s BBC Proms, and appeared at the

Royal Albert Hall on the First Night in July. Earlier this year he performed a solo recital at the famous Vienna Concert Hall.

Also appearing at the concert will be well known local soprano Sarah Ogden. Sarah is a post graduate student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where she has already achieved competition success.

Racketball proves a big hit in Honley

Love of horses leads to new tourist attraction

By Dominic Musgrave A CAR crash victim who has rebuilt his life thanks to his love of heavy horses has turned his passion into a new tourist attraction.

The Holme Valley Heavy Horses Heritage Centre at Hinchliffe’s Farm, Netherton is the brainchild of former teacher Pam Brooke and son Michael Bye, who acquired their first rescue Shire from Orkney.

Michael, a former professional musician, had his career cut short nine years ago when he was involved in a horrific crash, which left him with a crushed leg and other injuries.

They now own four draught horses – three Shires called Major, Escrick Edward (Ted) and William and a Clydesdale called Lady Helen, who were previously stabled in Meltham.

Pam, from Honley, who is married to local historian Alan Brooke, said she became smitten with the breed when she visited the Cumbrian Heavy Horse Centre with Michael four years ago.

She added: “It was the first time I'd seen my son enjoy himself in years. We bought Lady Helen for Michael as therapy for him after the accident, and it completely turned his life around.

“He became so attached to it, he gave up his job and began training with some of the country’s best trainers to learn how to look after them.

“It seemed a natural step to go into business together and work with them every day.

“Our family roots can be traced back over 200 years in the Holme Valley and we want to preserve and promote Shire horses in the area.”

The horses will be the mainstay of a new heritage and educational centre, which will celebrate the role the animals have played in the history of the area’s rural life.

Visitors to the Centre will be able to watch the Shires going about their work on the farm as they would have in days gone by, and also have the opportunity to sign up for a ‘Heavy Horse Experience Day’ to learn how to handle the horses, ‘harness up’ and harrow one of the fields.

Half-hour carriage rides will also be available for families in a 10seater ‘waggonnette’ every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

The family also hope to introduce the role of the horses in social history to the school curriculum, and are hoping to attract financial support from The Heritage Lottery Fund and other local sponsors.

A HONLEY sports centre is becoming a hotspot for the sport of racketball with over 50 regular players, three thriving league teams and two national champions.

Julie Lawton, manager at the Phoenix Squash and Fitness Club, and her partner Jim Lord are hoping to regain their over40s national doubles title when they compete in the championships in Oxford in October.

They’ve won the trophy twice before but couldn’t compete last year because of injury.

They are on good form as both have won national singles titles this year. Julie is the reigning ladies over-45s champion. She took up racketball just a few years ago as an alternative to squash. She said: “It was Jim who introduced me to the sport – he was already a national champion and he invited me to play mixed doubles with him. I became hooked really quickly, trained hard and in 2009 won the over 40s ladies nationals. I’ve not stopped since.”

Racketball is now the UK’s fastest growing racquet sport. It’s similar to squash and is played on the same court, but the play-

ers use larger racquets and a larger, bouncier ball. This makes it less demanding on the body than squash, making it ideal for anyone who has suffered previous injuries.

Julie explained: “The ball is bouncier so it doesn’t die like a squash ball so there’s a lot less bending and twisting, stopping and starting – it’s nowhere near as hard on the body as squash.

However, this means the ball keeps going for longer, so players need to be fit and quick around the court. It’s a great sport for overall fitness.”

The club now introduces new players to racketball rather than squash, with lessons provided by resident coach Dennis Schofield.

They hold regular beginners sessions and social leagues with a handicap system. The club also supports three teams competing in the Kirklees and Calderdale league, and were league winners for the last three years.

“Most people who try racketball take to it very quickly. It’s growing very fast and it’s no longer the poor relation to squash but a popular sport in its own right. I’d encourage anyone to come along and give it a go.” said Julie.

Trust wins award for Magdale work HONLEY Village Community Trust has won the Civic Society’s ‘Better Honley Award’ for its continuing work in Magdale.

The award, which marks National Civic Societies Day, recognises efforts to improve life in the village.

Chairman Ian Blagborough said: “The Trust is delighted to

receive the award, particularly as it recognised all the hard work done by the conservation volunteers throughout the year whatever the weather.”

Other winners included Kevin Littlewood for his continuing efforts in keeping the Honley Cemetery tidy and Kirklees Council for Honley Park.

Developing camera club on the move after outgrowing base THANKS to its increasing popularity, Holmfirth Camera Club has outgrown its previous meeting base and has moved into a new home within Northlight Gallery in Armitage Bridge.

For a number of years the club has met at St David’s Church, Holmbridge, but its growing membership has led to a need for more space. The club will launch its 2011/12 season on Monday September 5 at the Gallery with a welcome evening for existing and potential new members who are interested in developing their digital photography skills.

The club has prepared an extensive programme for the season including lectures on skills and techniques, photographic workshops and illustrated talks by famous photographers including Alan Saunders who specialises in wildlife photography and Derry Brabbs, known for pictures in the Wainwright books. The group will hold club and interclub competitions for both digital and print photography, and a number of social events.

Melvyn Gibson, chairman of the club, said: “Photography has changed enormously since the group was formed in 1940 but by adapting to change and having a good rapport between its members the Holmfirth Camera Club looks set for a promising future. Also during September the Holme Valley Calendar produced by the Camera Club goes on sale at various outlets in Holmfirth, Honley, Meltham and Netherton. This will be the seventh year it has been produced. The images reflect the beauty of the area through the seasons, as well as activities in and around the Holme Valley. All the photographs were taken by the members and then put into a competition in order to select the best.

A dozen people came together for a dry stone walling course in Skelmanthorpe to help newts survive along a popular tourist attraction. Dominic Musgrave joined them.

Dry stone wallers help connect two newt colonies UNDER the watchful guidance of master craftsman Nigel Goody from the Otley and Yorkshire Dales branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association, the group rebuilt the wall along the Kirklees Light Railway.

The free day was the last in a project that received £24,000 from SITA and the Kirklees Council Environment Unit, and the Great Crested Newt Link Project aimed to connect two colonies from within the parish.

Nigel said: “I love doing this and always hope that everyone will get a lot out of it, as well as enjoying their day.

“This is the biggest form of recycling you can get, and we are handling something that is in the region of 350 million years old that only comes around when there is an ice age.

“The more walls we can put back together the better it will be for the newts, toads and frogs that live in them.”

The amphibians use the walls as places to hide and safe routes between ponds, and are also known to be where Great Crested Newts hibernate during the winter.

Organiser Andy Wickham, the countryside officer for the

Denby Dale Countryside Project, said: “As part of the funding that we received we agreed to run a series of events offering the local community the opportunity to learn this ancient craft.

“We ran the first two events last October and this one is the final one that we will be holding. A lot of people take dry stone walls for granted, but what this group has achieved will probably still be standing in 200 years’ time.

“We hope that by rebuilding the wall we will create areas for the newts to hibernate and

also to link the two colonies that we know exist along the railway line.”

One of those trying dry stone walling for the first time was James Thompson from Golcar.

He said: “I saw the course advertised on the internet and thought I would give it a go.

“I sit looking at a computer all day during the week so it gave me the opportunity to do something hands on, and I think doing something like this will be beneficial.”

Angie Zielonka from Holmfirth has previous dry stone walling experience, and

took part in the days Andy organised last year.

She said: “I really enjoy days like this because you are part of a team made up of people from all types of background but with the same goal.

“And, at the end of the day you have something to show for all your efforts and feel like you have achieved something worthwhile.

“It is not just about piling a load of stones on top of each other as people may think.

There is a structure to it and you know it will still be there for years to come.”

HoTT stands for Holmfirth Transition Town initiative. We are a growing number of local people concerned about the very real threat of climate change and peak oil, and the risks our actions today may pose for future generations. We aim to find together ways to reduce our carbon footprints as well as saving money, especially on fuel bills – increasingly important in these difficult times.

HoTT events for fun and future HOLMFIRTH Transition Town initiative (HoTT) is putting on two events that will be fun, save money and move us to a better future.

On Sunday September 11, there is the Second Holmfirth Community Blackberry Picking Event. This will start at 2pm outside the Civic Hall, with blackberry picking in nearby fields, followed by a fun tea from 3.30pm back at the Civic Hall. This family event was much enjoyed last year – but come prepared with good shoes etc. Details: Martin Smith on 01484 687139.

But on a much bigger scale, HoTT is holding its Bright Green Energy Show, also at the Civic Hall on Saturday, October 1. This allday event (10am to 4pm) will, according to Frances Bennett, the organiser, “tell you everything you need to know about green energy from changing your light bulbs to installing major energy systems.”

It’s worth thinking about energy.

Costs are rising steeply – with the average household having to fork out about £130 more on energy bills this year. Moreover, there are financial incentives for businesses and households willing to make early investment in renewable energy. The Government has indicated that incentives are likely to be poorer for those who hold back and hope to invest later.

But it can be difficult to decide what to do. Here the show can help. It is much bigger than last year – with over twenty stalls and you will be able to talk to advisors, installers and equipment providers.

What’s more – and new this year – you will be able to talk to a ‘Bright

Green Energy Person.’ These are local folk who have already made changes to their homes or businesses. You can ask them about the unexpected benefits as well as the practicalities.

Most of the firms at the show are local – indeed this is probably the biggest coming together of local green firms that Holmfirth has ever seen. They bring experience of leading edge projects. The Booth Brothers, for instance, were assisted by local business to transform Bullhouse Mill, only six miles from Holmfirth centre at Millhouse Green, to become one of only fourteen commercial buildings in the UK with an A plus energy rating.

The Mill is highly insulated, and draws renewable energy from the sun, wind and water, as well as using low energy appliances. This makes it more than able to meet its own energy needs and export power to the grid for which it is paid.

The Bright Green Energy Show will interest businesses and householders. It is also a family event.

Refreshments and children’s activities with experienced adults in support will be available all day.

Underpinning much of our reading is The Transition Town Handbook.

The group is not standing still – planned for the coming months are The HoTT Review of Books – an annotated digest of all that’s best in what we’re reading and a HoTT Literary Competition for HoTT writers everywhere.

The group meets monthly in a HoTT member’s house in the centre of Holmfirth. Meetings – with refreshments – are from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. There is rarely a set book – as there often is with other reading groups. We bring along anything – in any media – that we are currently reading and can stimulate discussion. Design agency makes films for National Trust

By Dominic Musgrave A HONLEY design agency has completed work on two short films to promote West Yorkshire sites owned by the National Trust.

Lightbulb was commissioned by the Trust to make the films about the Marsden Moor Estate and Hardcastle Crags, near Hebdon Bridge.

Both films were showcased at an internal spring conference attended by National Trust staff from all over the Yorkshire and North East region, and then shown to the public at the relaunch of the Yorkshire Moors and Dales fundraising appeal in Leeds, hosted by director general of the National Trust, Dame Fiona Reynolds.

Lightbulb creative director David Henzell said: “Working with the National Trust has been a dream come true for Lightbulb.

“Producing such a high profile piece of work across a number of months has been exhilarating and, as Trust members, helping to promote a cause that is close to our hearts is truly rewarding.”

As well as generally promoting the two sites, the films will be used to gain support for the Yorkshire Moors and Dales

appeal, which aims to raise funds to conserve the Trust’s properties of Marsden Moor, Hardcastle Crags, the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Brimham Rocks. They will soon be featured on the Trust’s website.

Lightbulb collaborated with Yorkshire-based film maker Craig Palmer and photographer Gary Stevenson, who allowed the Trust to use several of his images of the moors.

The films feature exclusive poetry from acclaimed local poet Simon Armitage, who also lends his voice to the production.

The music for both pieces was provided by The Penguin Cafe Orchestra.

Property manager for the Marsden Moor Estate and Hardcastle Crags, Judith Patrick, added: “We were very keen to look at new media approaches to promoting the two properties and the Trust’s work and the appeal.

“Visual imagery seemed an obvious means and has the flexibility to be used for a variety of different audiences. Lightbulb has captured the essence and spirit beautifully.

“They were a pleasure to work with – professional, approachable, flexible and local.”

Lesley joins choir TICKETS are now on sale for the Honley Male Voice Choir 75th anniversary concert with special guest star Lesley Garrett.

The concert, on Saturday September 24, will be the first time international singing star Lesley has appeared at Huddersfield Town Hall. She will perform a number of solo items and will also join the choir for many songs from famous musicals such as Guys & Dolls and Les Miserables.

Despite her many engagements around the world, Lesley has become quite involved with preparations for the anniversary concert and Alan Jenkins, the choir’s acting musical director has rearranged much of the music to her specification.

By day Danielle Goodhand works in marketing, but after hours she can be found in her kitchen, doubling as one of the region’s best cupcake bakers.

Christina Eccles met her.

Why Danielle’s evenings are spent in the kitchen rustling up cupcakes AFTER taking part in a cake decorating night course while studying at university in Manchester, Danielle was bitten by the baking bug.

Working at a bakery in Sheffield helped to hone her skills and now she has set up her own business – Crumbs Cupcakery – which she currently runs from her kitchen in Holmfirth.

At the moment, Danielle has to fit baking around her day job, so evenings and weekends are often spent making private orders from people wanting cakes for occasions such as birthdays or weddings.

She also supplies a weekly order to a coffee shop in Huddersfield, as well as taking a stall every third Sunday at the farmer’s market in Holmfirth.

With tempting flavours on the menu such as lemon, raspberry swirl cheesecake and chocolate, it’s no wonder Danielle’s friends and family support the business, and she admits she is never short of willing volunteers to help with testing new recipes.

She said: “Family and friends love having samples and have been so supportive. When we sell them at the market, chocolate and vanilla always go first and then lemon.

Home celebrates with garden party A MELTHAM care home celebrated its first anniversary in style with a garden party event attended by more than 100 residents, their relations and the local community.

Those present enjoyed a hog roast, entertainment from Belinda O’Hooley and a range of activities and stalls.

Manager Tracey Nash also marked the occasion by cutting a cake with the home’s original boss Trish Starr, who has since been promoted within the business.

Tracey said: “The first year has been very good. We have not had many staff changes and have built up a good rapport with the

Parliamentary Corner I HOPE you’re all enjoying the summer, although at the time of writing this column the weather has been far from sunny.

The big issue dominating the national agenda this summer has been the riots. My email inbox and postbag were bursting with suggestions to tackle the looters with everything ranging from bringing back the birch and national service to using water cannon.

Many others have had their say too. My views are twofold. Firstly those who took part in the criminal activity of looting and damage must be punished.

With CCTV providing evidence, hundreds of looters have come before the courts. The punishments though must fit the crimes.

Secondly we have as a society to start to understand why it happened. Why did so many people of all ages, some with jobs, damage businesses in their communities and loot shops?

As someone who spent the first ten years of my adult life in the Royal Air Force immersed in team spirit, respect and responsibility, I’d really like to know why those qualities were so lacking.

I’m a big supporter of the National Citizen’s Service which is already being rolled out across the country – so no knee jerk reaction here.

The NCS will give 16 year olds the chance to develop the skills and attitudes they need to get more engaged with their communities and become active and responsible citizens.

There will be adventurous training, volunteering and social action

Jason McCartney projects in their local communities. Pilot projects are getting great feedback and the eventual aim is that the NCS will become a rites of passage experience for all 16 year olds.

As regular readers of this column will know I’m not a doom and gloom merchant. I have a positive outlook and feel upbeat about the future of our country.

I spent a week in August volunteering with many of our wonderful local charities and voluntary groups.

I met many lovely people doing good things whether it was the volunteers of the National Trust putting up fences on the moors to keep the sheep off the roads or the helpers in the Kirkwood Hospice shop.

I also helped out in a day care centre, at the Mencap drop in hall, on the Meltham Greenway, at the Cafe 100 Youth Club and at an Urban Wildlife Project.

I celebrated Yorkshire Day at one of our newest vibrant ventures. The Holmfirth Vineyard near Holmbridge now boasts a superb restaurant with panoramic views across the top of the Holme Valley. Super views with scrumptious food.

I was also honoured to attend the memorial service for Edgar Dickinson, one of the brothers who drove forward the Longley Farm Dairy business.

Edgar was a kind and generous man who supported many local events and groups, especially the Hade Edge band.

Whatever mayhem we see on our TV screens being committed by a minority of criminals let’s remember we have many more good people, of all ages, doing good things for our community and our country.

Therapist Ruth hopes to extend massage project ELDERLY and long-term sick people have a chance to ease away their aches and pains at a new community massage project in Thongsbridge.

Therapist Ruth Smith is providing low-cost treatments to people who might otherwise be unable to afford them. She hopes her healing hands will help people manage pain, achieve relaxation, relieve anxiety and improve their overall health.

At the moment Ruth’s project runs every Tuesday from 9.30–4pm in a room at St Andrew’s Church in Thongsbridge. She would like to see it extended to more days, perhaps with other local therapists coming on board to offer some of their time too.

Ruth has been involved in similar community projects before in London and Brighton where she set up charity-backed clinics for people suffering from HIV and disabilities. After moving to the Holme Valley nine years ago, she worked as a massage therapist at the Elmwood Health Centre on Huddersfield Road.

She said: “I dealt with GP referrals of people who could benefit from massage as part of their health care package. I loved it and was very sad when the funding was cut and I had to

leave. I wanted to reach those people again and so I thought of starting the community massage project here at the church. It’s wonderful to be able to help people who won’t otherwise think of accessing these kinds of therapies.”

Ruth uses her 20 years’ experience to offer all kinds of different therapies depending on her clients needs, including sports massage, aromatherapy and deep tissue. “We can talk about what’s bothering them and create a focused therapy plan that is right for whatever problems they have,” she explains.

The project is currently receiving no financial support. Ruth charges £15 for each treatment session to cover her costs. Her sessions are available to anyone who is low waged, on benefits, elderly, a carer or who suffers from long-term chronic health conditions.

She said: “I love that I can bring relief to people who really need it. I enjoy providing therapy to anyone but the type of people I get here at the church is where my heart is.”

Newfoundland Rufus may not look like a typical lifeguard – but his rescue skills are proving popular with the people of Holmfirth. Christina Eccles spoke to owner Rebecca Hodgson.

Rufus to the rescue ALREADY weighing 10 stone and still growing, two-yearold Rufus attracts attention wherever he goes.

Rebecca and partner David Trueman have had him since he was a puppy, purposely choosing a Newfoundland as they were interested in getting involved with water rescue.

Rebecca, David and Rufus spend each weekend over the summer at Rother Valley Country Park where they take part in practice water rescue missions, which help their pet to improve his skills.

And their hard work is paying off, since he has just won a trophy for being best water dog in the north.

Rebecca said: “He absolutely loves it.

Anywhere we take him with water, he wants to go in.

“Newfoundlands have got webbed feet and swim almost in a breast stroke style, so are quite fast in the water. They have also got a double coat and one layer is water resistant. In Canada they used to use them to rescue fishermen from their boats.

“We also really enjoy it. It’s a lot of hard work though.

As members of the Northern Newfoundland Club, they also take part in demonstrations and family shows where the public can come and watch Rufus and other water rescue dogs in action.

At the training sessions, the dogs can also take part in challenges – such as rescuing someone who is pretending to drown or pulling a lifeboat back to the shore – to progress through five levels, A to E. Rufus is currently on level D and the couple’s other Newfoundland Shelby, who couldn’t swim at all when Rebecca and David first rehomed her, is also doing well and has passed two of the tests.

And Rebecca, who works as a school manager in the History department at the University of Leeds, revealed he has become a popular talking point with locals, especially children who love to come up to him when he’s out for a walk.

She added: “We can’t walk very far without someone coming to stroke him. But he’s really friendly and luckily also gets on well with our three cats.”

Jason helps out for volunteer week LOCAL MP Jason McCartney spent a packed National Volunteer Week with local charities and community groups.

His week included helping to maintain the Meltham Greenway, working in the Forget Me Not Trust charity shop in Lindley, out on the Moors with the National Trust near Marsden and helping out in the Kirkwood Hospice shop in Holmfirth.

He also volunteered at the Waves Day Centre in Slaithwaite, got involved with Mencap’s help scheme, helped out with the Friend to Friend activity lunch at the North Light Gallery, flexed his green fingers at the Thornton Lodge community garden and volunteered at Holmfirth’s Cafe 100 Youth Club.

Jason said: “I really enjoyed spending a week with some of the amazing charities and voluntary groups in my area during my first Annual Volunteer Week.

This is now something I’ll be doing every summer.

“The aim of the week was to learn more about the wonderful work charities and voluntary groups do in our area. I knew many of them already but I wanted to pay tribute to those who give so much time to keep these organisations going and I want to encourage more people to get involved.”

HINCHLIFFE’S Farm in Netherton has been shortlisted for a prestigious tourism award.

The attraction has been nominated in the Taste of Yorkshire category at the White Rose Awards, organised by tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire.

The farm will battle it out against other Yorkshirebased attractions such as Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Cafe in Pickering and The Balloon Tree Farm Shop and Café in Gate Helmsley, near York to be crowned the winner.

Chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, Gary Verity, said: “Yorkshire’s tourism economy is booming and the finalist list for the White Rose Awards indicates why. The level of high quality entries was outstanding and a firm indication that our tourism industry know the importance of offering our visitors that extra special experience.”

The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony in October, taking place at Doncaster Racecourse.

Communities encouraged to get in the zone IT WAS ‘all aboard’ for members of Kirklees Federation of Tenants and Residents’ Associations at their Better Places to Live 2011 event held in Netherton.

Various workshops were held throughout the day encouraging residents to give their views, learn all about services including Streetscene and Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and find out how they can work together to make their neighbourhoods cleaner and safer.

Residents also boarded an old London Routemaster bus for a joint presentation by Kirklees Council Community Safety Team and West Yorkshire Joint

Services (Trading Standards) focusing on cold-calling control zones and how communities can help set them up. Zones are already working in Meltham, Brockholes and Honley in the Holme Valley area.

People learned about the importance of reporting incidents of unwanted doorstep selling, bogus officials, pressured selling or demands for money for unwanted services.

Councillor Jean Calvert, joint cabinet member for wellbeing and communities, said: “There is lots of help and support available in Kirklees. We don’t have to put up with nuisance calls or antisocial behaviour.

“We can all make our neighbourhoods safer places to live by reporting incidents to the police and Consumer Direct. It’s amazing what can be achieved when we work together and when the community collectively voice their concerns.

“Zones give vulnerable and elderly residents in particular an extra feeling of security by making it clear they do not want to be contacted. The Energy Sure Code of Practice supports the zones by ensuring that sales agents do not operate in them.”

Crime prevention advice was also given out, including to check the ID of any caller and, if in any doubt, to not let them in.

Councillors appeal for flooding information THE THREE councillors of Holme Valley South are appealing to local people to come forward with information about flooding in and around New Mill.

Donald Firth, Nigel Patrick and Ken Sims are looking to build an accurate and comprehensive picture of the town’s flooding problems which they can use in their work with Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency to combat future flooding.

Nigel Patrick explained what they are looking for: “There are four dykes that converge on the centre of New Mill and it’s these that pose the greatest potential flooding risk. We’re looking for any and all information relating to these dykes, from their source in the hills down to the town centre. The best people to tell us all about them are the people who live locally or have businesses or farms around them.

Information might be factual or anecdotal, historic or recent – it doesn’t really matter, it will all help to build this picture.”

Tom’s bowled over by his own performances

By Dominic Musgrave A HONLEY cricketer says he is as shocked as anybody by his performances in the first-class game after being snapped up by Essex.

Tom Craddock, who graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University this summer, was signed by the county after impressing while playing for Unicorns (a team made up players aspiring to have a career in the game) against Essex.

The leg-spinner told Holme Valley Review the last few months have been 'a bit surreal'.

He added: “I knew it was going to be tough and a real challenge because I knew the standard would be high. I really didn’t expect to be so successful.

“The coach Paul Grayson offered me a trial and a few games with the first team because he thought I was good enough to play first-class cricket. I played one game for the second team and took seven wickets and since then I have been with the first team.

“On the rare occasion I have had a few days off and have come home there have been so many questions that my family and friends have wanted to ask me because I'm not sure it has sunk in for them yet either.

Everybody is chuffed to bits for me.”

The 22-year-old is a late developer in the sport, having only taken it up at the age of 15 after going for a net with his brother. Prior to him playing for Honley in the Drakes Huddersfield League he also had spells with Upperthong and Holmfirth. Last season he took 72 wickets and was named young cricketer of the season.

During his time at university he also represented Leeds and Bradford as part of the MCC Universities programme.

He added: “I’ve signed with Essex until the end of the season and hope my performances have earned me a longer contract as I would love to get into the full-time set-up.

“Ever since I have started playing cricket I have always bowled leg-spin, which is quite a natural thing but takes a lot of hard work to master.

“Essex has given me a chance where other counties that I had trials with including Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire didn’t, so I want to repay that faith they showed in me and be loyal to them.”

Tom recently took five wickets on a rare outing for Honley this season against Shelley. The club’s second team has also recently clinched the Second XI Frank Platt Championship.

Readers’letters These letters were prompted by last month’s front page story about MP Jason McCartney inviting Mary Portas to Holmfirth.

Ivan Lewis, Meltham: I live in Meltham and used to enjoy walking around Holmfirth on a Sunday but now it barely interests me, such a shame for such a quaint and well loved town.

Another charity shop, particularly a big national like Oxfam is bad news in my view. Oxfam are a large business and more expensive than on-line retailers.

Not good.

It would be far better for the council to be more flexible with plans for new businesses, the reason charity shops take over is because they get concessions on the rent, A three-year plan for example would help new businesses get established, 50% off the 1st year, 25% the second & 10% for the 3rd.

These are challenging times for experienced traders let alone young people, and a foot-up for new ideas can only be good for Holmfirth, It must be better to have 50% rent than none at all so why not give it a try?

New businesses only mind as the system could be abused by some.

It has the potential for being a really great market town but it needs diversity, charity shops don't give that.

I really hope something can be done.

New Resident, Holmfirth: I definitely do not welcome ANOTHER charity shop here in Holmfirth especially given that we have a wonderful traditional second hand book shop on Daisy Lane!

I'm outraged that this is allowed to happen and saddened that the town cannot attract some new business that complements what Holmfirth has already got to offer.

Grand opening for Valley’s newest community garden

By Sandie Marshall THE HOLME Valley’s newest community garden will be officially opened at Wooldale Allotments on September 10.

The event will feature a ribbon cutting as well as a herb spiral building workshop, information on the general benefits of herbs and other creative arts activities.

Food on offer will include tasty vegeburgers made from seasonal harvest and tea and cakes.

The garden has been funded

by Community Partnership and aims to make gardening easier for those people who manage any health condition or who just want to learn to grow fruit and vegetables themselves. It has waist high raised beds and wide, smooth paths to make access easy for wheelchair users and the disabled.

Project manager Elaine Thélier from Holme Valley Gardening Network has a programme of outdoor and indoor events planned for the garden throughout the autumn and winter.

She will be working in partnership with groups including the Methodist Church in Wooldale, the Quakers in Wooldale, Holmfirth Transition Town and Holmfirth Forum to deliver some

of the events.

Topics for events will include creative garden arts, edible woodland planting, natural composting methods, raised bed construction and foraging and preserving. Some events, including regular harvesting and cooking sessions, will take place at the network’s other garden site in Royds Avenue, New Mill.

Open sessions for anyone wanting to get involved will run on Wednesdays 10-2pm on the Royd's Ave Site in New Mill and Thursdays 10-2pm on the Wooldale Allotments.

Elaine will be offering training and support for those people and staff who work with or care for someone managing a health condition, and also promoting the use of the site for other groups who may benefit.

There’s an opportunity to find out more about this at an open day at the site on Thursday September 8 from 10-2pm.

The Independent Cooperative Society, who originally gave the land for the Wooldale Allotments, are keen to retail the produce grown there and are actively promoting the site.

Out with the hot pants, in with the wool

By Becky Sturdy I’M back from my holidays, its raining and I can no longer justify a new bikini just incase we have a sudden heat wave.

That’s right, the end of summer is now only weeks away...

But stop crying into your floral maxi, as my mum used to tell me one good thing must end so another can begin and in my eyes this is a statement that goes for your wardrobe as well.

It’s time to take a look at your wardrobe and route out your winter warmers in preparation for darker nights.

Steps to wardrobe rearrangement This season – move all your top pieces from this season to one side of your wardrobe, discard summery items like bikinis and flipflops and throw them on the bed ready to be packed away.

Root out all your winter pieces from last year (and the years gone by) and have a clean out. Keep pieces you know you will wear or feel may (HONESTLY) come back into fashion.

Start the hunt for this season’s essentials, make a mental or physical list of all the must-have trends your wardrobe is lacking, be honest and prioritise.

Repeat these actions for all walks of your wardrobe life.

Accessories, shoes and bags must all be cleansed.

Summer for me is my busiest time when it comes to my day job (yes I too have a grown up job).

But when I do get the occasional bit of spare time I like to take a day trip or two.

When I was a little girl and my parents would tell me we were going on a day trip my response was always the same, will there be shops? What will they sell? And safe to say nothing has changed.

If you’re looking to take a day trip but not looking to go too far why not venture over to Denby Dale and visit a little haven of fashion treasures as well as educating yourself on the town’s pie making ability.

Eye spy this season’s trends: Leopard print, leopard print, leopard print. This season is loving the animal prints and I vote leopard print.

Big knits are back so hunt out a key piece whose statement is as large as the needles it was knitted on.

Spotty dress and star top.

Not to forget my feet. I’m loving wedges especially peep toe wedge boots in one print.

I found a pair of these on eBay in a leopard print pattern but missed out on them due to spending too much time with a good book in the bath.

Section up your wardrobe so you can clearly see what clothes you have eg, big knits, cardigans, tops, jackets, trousers etc.

When I used to think of Denby Dale Mill Shop, what sprung to mind was health food, school shoes and pine furniture but as I walked through the front doors and my eyes fell upon ‘Cherry Bomb’ my opinions were changed forever as it was between these walls that I was able to find all this season’s key trends in one room.

Africa school campaign to be launched A CAMPAIGN to send more children in Malawi to school will be launched at the Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival.

The Fair Trade Rice Challenge, supported

by The Fair Traders Co-operative, aims to educate people that by buying fairly traded rice they can make a difference to the lives of people in Africa.

The launch at the festival will involve a cookery demonstration and tasting session by a Malawian cook, plus presentations at The Fair Traders Co-operative about rice farming in Malawi and the difference fair trade makes to the lives of farmers and their communities.

A ‘rice mountain’, representing the 90kg of fairly traded rice a Malawian farmer needs to sell in order to send one child to school will also be displayed, and visitors will be invited to pledge to buy fair trade produce. They will then be able to chart the shop’s progress towards sending more children to school in Malawi on the giant ‘rice-ometer’ on show inside the shop and on its website.

Anna Watson of The Fair Traders Co-operative said: “We’re very excited about launching this challenge. For us it’s a way to get the message out there that shoppers really can make a huge difference to people’s lives just through the everyday purchases they make and the stores they choose to shop in.

“Here at The Fair Traders Co-operative we assess every product we sell for its impact on people and the planet, and customers can see the results of that assessment at a glance before they buy. Food festival organisers promise something for all

By Sandie Marshall THE FINAL line up is being planned for the sixth Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival which will take place in the town on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September.

Organisers at Kirklees Council are promising something for everyone from the most serious foodie to those who just enjoy good things to eat and drink.

At the centre of the festival will be two days of hourly demonstrations in the Upper Market Hall from local and regional businesses including the Old Bridge Bakery, Cody’s

Farm, the Old Bridge Hotel and the Fair Traders Co-operative.

One highlight will be Saturday at 11am when willing volunteers from Holmfirth High School are due to take on Honley High in their own Ready, Steady, Cook competition.

In the lower market hall and through the streets to Norridge Bottom, a packed food market will offer local and international produce from 10am to 5pm, with some stalls staying open until 7pm.

The festival open-air bar will be in Towngate car park alongside the food court with plenty of choice to try and buy.

Elsewhere, local bars, cafes and restaurants will be holding their own festival offers and tasters during the weekend.

Among them, Carniceria and The Nook will be running sessions to try their own beer brewed at the Nook Brew House in Holmfirth.

A park and ride scheme will be in place on both days in an attempt to limit the number of cars in the town centre.

But on a much more positive note, an ambitious young team in Shelley have breathed new life into an old mill, creating a beautiful bistro in blissfully relaxed surroundings.
