The weekly online newsletter for the care sector

Robotics used to alleviate staff pressure ONE of the UK’s leading care home providers is successfully using technology to relieve pressures posed by the pandemic. Bupa Care Services has introduced a ‘digital team’ of robots to speed and streamline its processing of Covid-19 test results. Within seconds of a positive result, the robots send a notification to the individual’s care home and complete the required governance reporting. The move has speeded up test results, removed the risk of human error and allowed individuals to swiftly isolate and limit possible transmission. It’s also reduced admin duties on staffing teams enabling them to focus on caring for residents. This has been particularly important when homes have had a reduced workforce due to staff shielding or isolating. Since their introduction in December 2020 the robots have processed responses to more than 160,000 individual Covid-19 tests. At its peak, this saved colleagues around 2,500 hours of admin – equivalent to 15-20 colleagues working full time. Neil Barker, finance director for Bupa Care Services, said: “We know the immense pressure that has been on our teams throughout the

pandemic and have looked for ways to relieve this. “The robots have had a huge impact. They have automated an admin-heavy process and freed up time for colleagues to care for residents, which is most needed. “It’s also given us a really clear, accurate picture of case numbers, both on a local home and national level, allowing us to act quickly in keeping everyone safe.” Bupa currently operates more than 20 virtual robots with five of these operating 24/7 to support the care homes business. Three monitor and triage thousands of incoming test results, before handingoff positive results to separate robots to send SMS notifications to staff and complete governance reporting. Nigel Green, head of service management for Bupa Global & UK, leads Bupa’s robotic process automation practice and has overseen its increased use across the organisation. He added: We successfully use robotics across a number of areas across Bupa. While it’s typically for things like finance and admin processing, it’s been great for the team to see the difference they’re making to people on the front lines of care.”

New era as manager to hand over

A Midlothian care home created its own staff salon to cater for its residents’ needs throughout lockdown. The carers at Mansfield Care’s Pine Villa in Loanhead adapted to the needs of its residents who were concerned they weren’t looking or feeling their best. With hairdressers closed, the team improvised with the equipment they had; organising a weekly salon day for those residents who needed a touch up. Carers assist residents to the lounge to give whoever asks for a fresh cut. The women often get their hair styled with rollers, curling tongs or hair dryers, with around five residents making it a regular weekly ‘visit’. The male residents get their hair and facial hair shaved or trimmed using a home cutting kit which comes with different sizes of blades to fit everyone’s preferred length and style. Resident Janet Wilson is pictured having her nails done.

REGISTERED manager Alison Bedford has stepped down from the role after 18 years at Peregrine House in Whitby. Alison had worked at the home as a schoolgirl, alongside her late mother. After a spell working in Germany, she returned to Whitby and began work in the kitchen at Peregrine House, from which humble beginnings she worked her way up, training on the job and mastering each role to become manager in 2003. Alison’s caring and organisational skills helped to earn Peregrine House its own accolades including gaining an Investors in People GOLD Award and becoming the first in the country to receive an Outstanding rating in all five categories under the Care Quality Commission in 2015. Owner Dr Kevin O’Sullivan said:“Alison’s leadership skills were buttressed by kindness and compassion, along with a determination to do what is right for the residents and her team. “She has shown genuine love for each and every one of the residents and expected the same of her colleagues. As a result we have a remarkable team of long-serving staff with great integrity.” During the past challenging year, Alison led the team in its own ‘unprecedented’ staff voluntary lock-in initiative early-on in the pandemic. New manager Meghan Collis has worked at Peregrine House for 10 years and has shadowed Alison as deputy manager since 2016.

Pop-up pub delights residents

A CARE home group found an exciting way of involving residents in the reopening of pubs by installing a pop-up pub at one of its homes. CHD Living, which has 13 care homes across Surrey and South London, arranged the surprise for residents at Kings Lodge in Byfleet, keen for them not to miss out on the day that many had been looking forward to. A mobile beer van, pool table, singer and other entertainment provided an authentic pub experience for the residents, who have faced restrictions on visits since the beginning of the pandemic last year. A stilt-walker brought extra smiles as they glided through the garden, interacting with the residents and care staff. Shaleeza Hasham, head of hospitality and communications at CHD Living, said: “We wanted to involve our residents in the celebrations taking place across the country but unable to get down to the beer gardens themselves, we thought we would bring the beer garden to them instead. “It was lovely to see everyone outside socialising and enjoying a pint together as we take this positive step forward in life returning to normal.”

Club to promote companionship amongst male residents at home A HERTFORDSHIRE care home has launched a gentlemen’s lunch club to provide a space for its male residents to come together and form new friendships – while enjoying a tipple or two. Attended by six residents and a staff member at Foxholes, near Hitchin, the inaugural lunch event was hailed a great success. Estate manager Neil Gandecha, who also attended the club’s launch event, said: “We’re always open to new ideas on ways we can improve our residents’ quality of life and, with several men reporting that they’d like to have a little space to gather and share their thoughts and experiences, we decided to trial the lunch club. “It was a way of providing somewhere where they could form new friendships and share likeminded interests, whether it’s sport, cooking or favourite destinations, and I think it’s really benefitted them from a mental health stance. “One resident was tearing up after our first event. He would often sit in his room and watch sport on TV but after finding out that others shared his sporting interests, they all plan to watch future events together in the lounge, and that’s what the club is all about; promoting companionship and fostering new friendships. “Whilst all residents interact, in an environment that’s predominantly

female, we realised there were some differences in interests and preferred activities, and the lunch club is just a way of trying to strike the right balance. “We’re really pleased it’s gone down so well with residents.” The newly formed club was launched to provide them with a platform where they could discuss anything from their mental health to hobbies and interests, as well as shared experiences with other men over a two-hour lunch. One of the key themes of the new weekly event, which took place in the orangery, was discovering talents amongst the members, which revealed a former poet who agreed

to write a poem to share at a future event. Another club member, a former musician, said he would bring in his guitar to play at future lunches. After the success of the first event, the club is expected to grow in attendance week on week, with future events set to incorporate the local community. Neil said: “We’ve already reached out to the local Hitchin Priory Probus Club and plan to get in contact with the Rotary Club of Hitchin Priory to explore opportunities to collaborate in the near future. We also plan to expand to include the family members of residents who wish to join the fun.”

Random acts of kindness brings joy to local people KIND-hearted staff at Mountview care home in Leicester are selflessly donating stock from their own kitchens alongside generous donations from the local community to provide essential food packages to local people and families who have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns. The team partnered with the MBC Foodbank Hub and Christ Of King Church food drive, who are both committed to caring for the community, to create essential food packages including tinned meat, fish and fruit as well as sweet treats such as biscuits, chocolate and gummy sweets. Registered care manager Stacie Weaver said: “The team over at the MBC Foodbank Hub are incredible in the work that they do, delivering vital support to those that need it the most in our local community, and we just wanted to do our bit to help. “The response has been fantastic, and we are really grateful to everyone who has made it possible to spread kindness around a community who continuously supports us and our

Home receives £1,000 boost from builder residents.” The food contributions from the Mountview team will go some way to helping ensure that local families and homeless people do not go without due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Residents helped staff organise stock and pack bags ready to be delivered to the charity.

Following the recent change in Government guidelines to allow one nominated visitor back into homes, HC-One’s Fir Trees care home on Tameside was delighted to open its doors once again, and it was very emotional for residents, their families and colleagues. Resident Edith Woolhouse and her daughter Gloria Keelagher, have been having window visits when they can, however Edith longed to be able to see her daughter inside the home. When the both of them were reunited, it was very emotional for everyone.

A HAMPSHIRE care home has received financial support from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes following a challenging year. Speedwell Court in Southampton is one of many purpose-built Abbeyfield care homes for older people in the country which provides residential and dementia-friendly care services to its residents. The Abbeyfield Society’s care homes have had been particularly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, not just financially, but emotionally too. Care home residents have experienced distance from family, which has in many cases been detrimental to their mental health. Care staff have had to get creative to help residents stay connected while also staying safe, and have facilitated outdoor and screened visits, and visiting ‘hubs’ where residents can talk to their loved ones safely. Speedwell Court has also maximised use of its gardens, ensuring that residents are able to enjoy the fresh air outdoors.

Customer relations manager Deborah Holmes said: “We’ve wanted to purchase garden equipment to kit out our new greenhouse and a rotavator that will be used to make an allotment space for our residents. Gardening, and being outside, is widely recognised as a brilliant way to maintain good mental and physical health.” The care demonstrated by Abbeyfield prompted Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes to step in and give its support via its Community Fund Scheme, which donates £1,000 to worthy causes in the region each month. Deborah added: “We are very grateful to Barratt and David Wilson Homes for this support, and look forward to seeing our residents enjoying their new equipment.” The Barratt and David Wilson Homes Community Fund is a dedicated financial resource that helps to support local causes which improve the quality of life for those living in the region.

Couple celebrate platinum anniversary with special message from the Queen TWO residents at a Porthmadog care home are celebrating 70 years of marriage together with a congratulations message from the Queen. Ken (95) and Ellen Whitehouse (92), originally from the West Midlands, met at a bakery they worked at as teenagers and have been together ever since. Moving to Meddyg Care, a specialist dementia care home group in Porthmadog and Criccieth, in 2018, the couple received a card from Buckingham Palace signed by the Queen to commemorate their platinum wedding anniversary. During their time together they enjoyed frequent trips to Switzerland, leading them to try their hand at learning German and they often enjoyed weekend getaways. Ken, who worked in the steel industry for 27 years, said: “We were in our mid-teens when I asked her on a date at the bakery we worked at and luckily for me, she said yes. “It was my Mother who suggested I ask Ellen to marry me and we wed at Wednesbury registry office soon after. Fast forward 70 years and the

Ken and Ellen Whitehouse. Queen writes to us in recognition of our anniversary; it was a wonderful surprise.” Ellen, who worked for a local council, added: “We’ve had plenty of adventures throughout our marriage. Every weekend we would get a guest house with a lake somewhere.

“Ken would stay by the lake fishing and I’d enjoy sunbathing while watching him. We’d have some fabulous BBQs, too. “We also have fond memories of Switzerland and we enjoyed it that much we started night classes to learn German. We loved our holidays

and would try and go at least twice a year.” The couple had some advice for those in relationships who would also like to reach their platinum wedding anniversary. Ellen said: “When it comes to relationships, I always considered my husband in every decision I made and that would be my advice for a longlasting marriage.” Ken added: “Our first 12 months as Mr and Mrs were the best, Ellen was a feisty one. “Marriage isn’t always easy and sometimes it can be a struggle but stick at it.” Natasha Evans, activities manager at Meddyg Care, concluded: “It’s lovely to see them celebrate their platinum anniversary together. “They were so happy when they opened their card from the Queen and reminisced over old photos of themselves. “They’re a typical married couple; a day isn’t complete without a disagreement. “But they’re very loving towards each other and brighten up Meddyg Care.”

4 A very special and much-loved resident at HC-One’s Redesdale Court in North Shields recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Gwen Atkinson enjoyed a fun filled day with lots of surprises. Her special day began with hair curling and breakfast before enjoying a video call to her granddaughter Lucy Atkinson in Australia, whom she had not seen for two years. Colleagues at Redesdale then attempted to open some of the 200 plus cards received from the public before ringing family and friends. Gwen was then taken into the garden for what she believed was to get some fresh air but to her surprise Preston Grange Primary School had organised, with wellbeing staff, to sing Happy Birthday to Gwen, who even had a surprise appearance from Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

One of Hampshire’s oldest residents revealed her personal secrets of longevity as she celebrated her 104th birthday. Great grandmother Irene Harris said enjoying lots of fresh air and avoiding salt in your diet were important pieces of advice for living to a century and beyond. Joined at her 1960s-themed birthday party at Colten Care’s Kingfishers care home in New Milton by family members under a safe-visiting protocol, Irene was naturally the centre of attention. Kingfishers team members granted her birthday wish, playing and dancing along to her favourite song, Nancy Sinatra’s 1966 hit These Boots are Made for Walkin’. As well as the UK, Irene and her second husband Tom lived in Australia for four years and travelled extensively across Europe and in the US.

A Formby resident celebrated her 107th birthday in style with a self-penned poem about her life and reaching such an incredible milestone. Known fondly as Aunty Marj, Marjorie Hodnett is a resident at New Care’s Formby Manor care centre. A real character and very much part of the home’s family of staff and residents, she is still incredibly alert and active and continues to pursue her lifelong passions of poetry writing and painting. Lockdown hasn’t dampened Aunty Marj’s enthusiasm for marking this momentous occasion and she enjoyed a day to remember filled with laughter, fun and visits from family and friends. Phyllis Ferguson, better known as Peggy, has celebrated her milestone 105th birthday at Ebor Court care home in Nether Poppleton. She was overwhelmed with deliveries of flowers, balloons, boxes of chocolates, presents and cards from her friends and loved ones which filled her room as she enjoyed FaceTime calls with her son and grandchildren. A surprise visit from her niece helped Peggy to continue her celebrations, and the Ebor Court team made sure she had a special day by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ and presenting her with a freshly baked chocolate cake.

The team at Park House nursing home in Peterborough hosted a very special celebration to mark the 100th birthday of resident Irene Sherman. Irene, who has lived at the home since 2013, was born on the Rothschild Estate near Oundle where her father worked as head gamekeeper. It was her love of music that led to her meeting her husband David, after they met at a concert at Peterborough Cathedral. David died in 2013 after 61 years of marriage, and soon after Irene moved to Park House where she has lived happily since. Irene has two grandchildren and two great grandchildren, as well as a niece who lives in Australia. On her birthday she was visited by her daughter Rosemary, who brought her flowers, presents and a card from Her Majesty, the Queen.

The team at Hambleton Grange care home in Thirsk helped Jean Smith to celebrate her milestone 100th birthday party in style by combining her two favourite things: afternoon tea and Frank Sinatra’s greatest hits. Jean was overwhelmed with deliveries of flowers, balloons, presents and cards including a special telegram from the Queen which filled her room as she enjoyed FaceTime calls with family and friends. Jean was also delighted to have a socially distanced visit from her daughter. The pair spent time catching up and Jean received a bottle of her favourite Chanel Number 5, an iconic perfume which is also celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Jean said: ”I am very appreciative for the staff putting this party together and making me feel so special. I feel blessed to have made it to my 100th birthday – It really was a day to remember.” Staff at De Brook Lodge care home in Urmston helped Les Stott to celebrate his milestone 90th birthday party in style by combining his two favourite things: train excursions and brass bands. To mark his birthday, Les spent much of his morning catching up on the phone with his loved ones and opening many cards and gifts which filled his bedroom. As a special surprise, the care team gave Les a first-class ticket for the ‘De Brook Express’, a virtual train ride experience for him to travel in style to a destination of his choice and soak up the scenes from a projector which took place in the onsite cinema room. The team also arranged for a full brass band to play ‘Happy Birthday’ from the garden.

A resident at Hope House care home in Accrington marked her 100th birthday with a card from the Queen and a surprise singer. Evelyn Corris was joined by residents and staff for the landmark celebration – which included a performance from a sociallydistanced singer standing outside in the garden. Later in the day, she spent time with her son, and nominated visitor, Derek Corris. Evelyn has two children, son Derek and daughter Jean, who both describe her as a fabulous and caring mother. Her wider family includes four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren.

Windsor Court in Great Malvern.

70 jobs to fill at recruitment event WINDSOR Court, a state-of-the-art £8 million care home under construction in Great Malvern, is holding a twoday recruitment fair on April 23 and 24 at its Covid-secure high street showroom. The private 51 bedroom care home is set to be opened by the Maria Mallaband Care Group this summer, creating 70 roles in care, hospitality, care support, and management – for those with no experience in care, to those with years of experience in the industry. This open-door drop-in event running from 9am to 5pm will be an opportunity to pick up information about the opportunities available, register details and chat with some of the leadership team, including new care home manager Zoe Miller, hospitality services manager Mike Lane and community liaison coordinator Ginny Peachey.

Group commissioning manager Annelli Chatfield said: “As we move closer toward the opening of this new home we’re looking at the full recruitment of our start-up team – that will include nurses, senior care assistants, care assistants, receptionists, hospitality assistants, a wellbeing lead, kitchen porters, domestic staff and laundry staff. It’s a long list, which reflects the breadth of opportunities in the social care environment. “Joining the Maria Mallaband family has a host of fantastic benefits too – including fully-funded training, support, and development opportunities, health insurance, a pension plan, and discounts and offers through Perkbox. “This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the core team that is going to launch a brand new purpose-built care home, and we look forward to

meeting with potential future team members.” The new care home will offer a luxury hotel-style environment with state-of-the-art facilities for the comfort and wellbeing of those living there – and to the benefit of staff – allowing them to provide the highest possible standards of care. Facilities will include lounges, restaurants, communal areas, a bistro and bar, a hair salon, an eightseat cinema which will be open to the community as well as residents (restrictions permitting), and landscaped gardens. The home is still under construction by specialist nursing home contractor Lawrence Baker Ltd on the site of the disused Malvern Community Hospital (which closed in 2011) in Great Malvern’s conservation area. Work is on schedule with Windsor Court set to open in July.

Alcedo Care Group has recruited Katie Sainsbury as the new Care Quality Commission registered manager for its Blackpool office. In her new role she takes responsibility for the safe and effective day-to-day running of the office and its team of more than 70 dedicated carers. Katie and the team will work with each individual client on a one-to-one basis to provide a care package that meets their particular needs and will also communicate with next of kin to provide much needed peace of mind in these uncertain times. She will also look after the employee team overseeing everything from the coordination of weekly rotas, days off and annual leave to ongoing staff training, personal development and career progression and work with the wider management team to help the business fulfil its expansion plans for the area.

Advertiser’s announcement

Claim thousands for mis-sold energy CARE providers across the UK have been urged to reach out to Business Energy Claims after research revealed around threequarters of homes have been missold energy. A host of care facilities have already reclaimed thousands of pounds with the help of the country’s leading organisation in tackling energy broker misselling. Among those to have been helped a nursing home in Essex which won back a substantial sum on its gas supply following a review of its agreement with a supplier. The manager of the care home, which can not be named for legal reasons, said: “It became apparent once we engaged with Business Energy Claims that there were excessive charges included in our rates and we are delighted that through their intervention we’ve been able to save so much.” Around 90 per cent of care

facilities which are eligible to claim back substantial amounts of money are unaware of this fact, but Business Energy Claims’ experienced team of energy and legal experts are ready to assist. Their aim is to help businesses across the country understand the nature of their deals with energy brokers and recover monies where they have been overcharged, for example through hidden fees and commissions which were not stated in contracts. This is a multi-billion pound issue in the UK but Business Energy Claims has a simple process to check if a company has a claim, and how much they may be entitled to. Among its other most recent successes was a £10,000 win for a care home in Sussex, which had been misled by its energy broker. The home used the money to make upgrades to its facilities to benefit residents, with the nurse manager remarking that Business Energy Claims had been “professional and efficient” and “exceeded her expectations”. Business Energy Claims director Callum Thompson said: “The care sector is such an important industry and it is a huge shame that anyone would look to take

Business Energy Claims director Callum Thompson.

advantage of such a worthy organisation. “In our experience, approximately 75 per cent of care homes have been mis-sold to in some way. “Care homes typically spend considerable sums on gas and electric and are therefore heavily targeted by energy brokers who are able to benefit from higher commissions as a result of their high consumption. “We would urge anyone who

has used a broker in the last six years to get in touch as one single care home could have a case worth well over £10,000, and care home groups can extend to several hundred thousands of pounds, and this is money they are entitled to.” If you believe your facility may have been affected, or if you’d like to find out more, call Business Energy Claims on 0800 689 4259 or visit http:// businessenergyclaims.co.uk/
