A very warm welcome to the Athena and to the third Caring UK Awards.

Our team has travelled the length and breadth of the country visiting the finalists – a big thank you to you all for the warm welcome and for taking the time to show us around – meeting you all and your teams is always the highlight of our year.

Year on year, the number of entries grows as does the quality which is amazing but does make the task of choosing the shortlists incredibly difficult.

It does mean that all our finalists – facilities, teams and individuals – should be very proud of their achievement to make the shortlist.

We believe our judges have provided us with a truly exceptional line-up of winners so thank you to them for their hard work and diligence.

This year’s judges Nadra Ahmed OBE, Chairman, National Care Association Nadra has been involved in the field of social care for over 30 years.

Until 2005 she was the registered manager of two private care homes for older people having developed and run services since 1981.

Nadra’s background is in training and education which has been the passion that drives her towards a quality service underpinned and provided by a skilled workforce.

She continues to champion the role of education in the delivery of a quality service through her company Kent Care Training Associates which is a not-for-profit based company in Kent.

Dr Michele Board, Principal Academic, Bournemouth University Dr Michele Board is a Principal Academic in Nursing Older People at the Faculty of Health and Social Science at Bournemouth University.

She has extensive experience in nursing, nurse leadership and nurse education.

Dr Michele Board leads the Older Persons Research Collaborative with members from universities across the UK and lead consultant nurses. The focus of the collaborative is frailty and the role of the nurses and allied health professionals in the assessment and care of the frail older person. She is the deputy lead for the Ageing and Dementia Research Centre at Bournemouth University.

Hilary Cragg, Partner, Nash & Co Solicitors As a Partner and practising solicitor, Hilary has a particular interest in issues concerning elderly and vulnerable clients.

She deals with all related legal matters, from will writing and Lasting Powers of Attorney to care home funding issues and disputes about care. Hilary came to the law after careers in retail, training and banking. She joined Nash & Co in 2008 as a trainee solicitor and qualified in March 2010. Hilary is an Accredited Member of Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), a Committee Member of the Devon & Cornwall Regional Group for SFE, and a Full Member of STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners).

Raj Kapoor. Head of External Training, Alzheimer’s Society Raj has a wealth of experience in the field of training and consultancy. Prior to joining Alzheimer’s Society in December 2014, Raj was previously Head of Training & Consultancy with the national mental health charity Mind, spending 10 years as Head of Training with the National Housing Federation. He is a qualified trainer and has worked with hundreds of organisations across different sectors.

As Head of External Training with the Society, Raj’s team provides specialist training to organisations directly responsible for delivering dementia care and support, as well as to organisations whose staff deal with people living with dementia.
