The weekly online newsletter for the care sector
Journal aims to overcome death stigma A CARE home provider is supporting residents on their final journeys by talking about death and dying in a positive way. Orchard Care Homes, which has facilities in the Midlands and the north of England, has been speaking to residents to get their perspective on endof-life and what is important to them. By supporting individual wishes, the operator is hoping to give residents comfort and increase their understanding. Director of quality and care Cheryl Baird said: “We want residents to feel empowered and able to discuss all needs including end-of-life. “This journal can be used to support them to do this, via a series of questions that address the circumstances and that can be included in an advanced care plan. “After all, you only get one chance to get it right. “Some feel it is difficult to talk about death and dying because it scares them. We then start to reflect, and this can stir up all types of emotions. “But it is important to talk about end-of-life as it allows your thoughts, feelings and wishes to be upheld by your loved ones or caregivers. “Many people have planned their end-of-life wishes in
advance and we encourage our residents to talk to their families about what they want.” My End of Life Journal is part of Orchard’s care planning process and has been 12 months in the making. It identifies all aspects of needs, including important people who residents would like to be with, where able, during the end-of-life phase. This is carried out respectfully and with empathetic communication, providing the resident and family with as much information as required to promote decision making, and can be carried out over a sustained period if the subject becomes distressing. The journal also includes useful website, references and helpline numbers. In the same way as making a will, My End of Life Journal aims to ensure affairs are in order but from an emotional rather than financial perspective. Headquartered in Harrogate, Orchard Care Homes has been running and managing care homes across the UK for more than a decade. The organisation has invested heavily in modern technologies such as E-MAR (electronic medication), E-Care (electronic care plans) and E-Protect.
The team at Brewster House in Maldon had an entertaining day in store for residents, with their crazy hair event. Staff sported their wildest ‘dos for the day, which brought lots of smiles and laughter to everyone at the home. The occasion was great fun for all, and some residents even wished to take part as well, wearing some vivid, bright colours in their hair. Home manager Femi Shoyombo said: “At Brewster House, we always try and organise unique activities, to deliver engaging and entertaining opportunities for residents. Our crazy hair day event is an excellent example of this. The event was great because both staff and residents could get involved and enjoy the day together. I am proud of the Brewster House team for everything they do for our residents, and for bringing high spirits to the home every day.”
Awards nominations now open OPERATORS wanting to put themselves forward for recognition have been urged to enter the Caring UK Awards. Nominations for this year’s event are now open at www.caringukawards.co.uk The awards, organised by Script Events in partnership with Caring UK, recognise excellence and achievement in all corners of the care industry. And with more than 20 categories up for grabs, there’s something to suit every type of care business. These include everything from Quality in Housekeeping and Catering Team of the Year to Best Outdoor Environment and End of Life Team of the Year. Event director Judith Halkerston said: “We are really excited to be introducing the fifth Caring UK Awards – nominations are coming in and our events team is already
busy ensuring that this year’s event is bigger and better than ever. “Obviously, our main aim is to recognise and honour the best in our wonderful care sector and showcase the innovation and dedication that goes on every day so please share your successes and tell us about your hard work and initiatives by sending in your nominations … it’s a real privilege to read them.” A shortlist in each category will then be drawn up, with winners chosen by an expert industry panel. Trophies will be handed out at a glittering ceremony to celebrate the best of the best, which this year will be held at the Athena in Leicester on Thursday, December 1 and presented by Emmerdale actor Dean Andrews. Closing date for nominations is August 26.

£15m home on track Burnley home celebrates for April opening latest ‘Good’ inspection WORK continues apace on a state-ofthe-art new £15m care home in Adel, which is now less than three months away from completion. Build is well underway at New Care’s ‘new generation’ 74-bed care facility, with practical completion confirmed for early April. CEO Chris McGoff said: “Work on site is progressing well and with just three months to go until practical completion, Adel Manor is really taking shape. “The care facility has been expertly designed to offer outstanding care in a stylish environment, and we are already starting to recruit the 100-strong team. “We’re looking forward to introducing our award-winning care services to residents in Adel in spring and are confident Adel Manor will be a much-welcomed addition to the region.” The external brickwork and roof tiling are complete meaning the building is now watertight, and the team of contractors and tradesmen on site are working hard on the interior to ensure the development remains on schedule and edges closer to completion. Known as Adel Manor Care Centre, the care facility is the latest for New Care, one of the UK’s fastest
growing development-led care home operators and part of the awardwinning McGoff Group. It is the first care facility in Yorkshire for the company. When complete, it will cater for the aspiring needs of residents in Adel and the surrounding area providing the highest standards of personcentred care. The care home will offer residential, nursing, dementia and respite care services in a safe and comfortable environment. Each of the well-appointed and restful bedrooms will feature a private en-suite wet room, while the home itself will offer several communal lounges, dining rooms, spa assisted bathrooms, a hair salon and nail bar, plus landscaped gardens. The care facility will also provide hotel-style services that ensure quality of life and enjoyment for residents, including fine dining, concierge services and a busy and varied programme of activities and events. Ensuring a home-from-home environment for all residents, Adel Manor will benefit from a high specification finish and will be decorated by a professional interior designer who will create a stunning yet practical space.
A BURNLEY care home has been praised by the Care Quality Commission following its latest inspection. Wordsworth House had already been given an overall rating of ‘Good’ in all areas at a CQC inspection in 2019. Its latest inspection focused on safety and leadership, both of which were found to be Good. Rachel Clough, regional support manager for Larchwood Care, said: “We were delighted to welcome back the CQC and the reaffirmation of Wordsworth House’s rating. It is especially pleasing to note that our hygiene and covid protocols are highlighted as Good. “The team at Wordsworth House do everything they can to ensure residents’ needs are met, which is acknowledged in the report by
residents, their family and CQC inspectors.” The report highlighted the care home’s responsive approach to residents’ problems and ensuring residents feel their needs, interests and preferences are being met sufficiently. Staff were positive about the respectful culture in the home. Other comments from the inspectors included: n Infection control was well managed, and the home was clean and free from hazards. n Person-centred culture was being embedded at the home. n People and their relatives were happy with the way the service was managed. n The manager and staff team were committed to providing people with high-quality care.

Karen marks 10th anniversary
Caring Homes has been shortlisted in two categories at the Pinders Healthcare Design Awards. Benson House in Wallingford (pictured) is nominated for ‘Best Exterior Space’, while Brook House in Towcester is up for ‘Best Innovation and Environmental’. Caring Homes Group managing director Tracey Fletcher-Ray said: “It’s exciting to see that our care homes are recognised amongst the very best in the industry. Our team has worked incredibly hard over the past very challenging year, so we are thrilled to be shortlisted. We will be keeping our fingers crossed for March.” The awards ceremony will take place at a ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on March 16.
WILTON House in Darlington has celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its administrator Karen Everson. Karen, 60, began working at the care home when she and her former soldier husband Major Keith Everson settled in Darlington after years of living in Cyprus and Germany. A trained nurse and aerobics instructor, Karen has held a number of office and accounts management roles in her varied career, but was instantly drawn to Wilton House on her first visit. Karen said: “I wasn’t really looking
for an administration role and initially joined for six months, but 10 years later I am still here. “I love the job, the home, my colleagues, and the residents and that is the most important thing for me. “Wilton House is lovely, it’s a real home from home and a great environment to work in. “I’m sure I will be working here until I retire.” Karen’s two daughters have carried on the family services tradition, one is in the Army and the other is married to a soldier.

Flagship development wins national award A FLAGSHIP development designed to support residents with dementia has been named Most Innovative Supported/ Sheltered Housing Scheme at the 2022 Housing Digital Innovation Awards. Housing 21 scooped the accolade at a prestigious ceremony in Birmingham after judges recognised the attention to detail afforded to residents at Meadow Walk in Fakenham, Norfolk. The extra care development, which comprises 66 one and two-bedroom apartments for rent and shared ownership, features £90,000 worth of dementia friendly features and represents the region’s first scheme to be designed around the condition. Tony Tench, deputy chief executive for Housing 21, said: “Dementia rates among people over the age of 65 in Norfolk are above the national average and the most common reason people are admitted into long term, residential care, often leading to the separation of couples who have spent a lifetime together.
“When designing Meadow Walk, we did so with this information in mind so we could deliver an innovative approach to suit people’s specific needs. “As well as promoting social interaction and activities which prompt long-term memory recall, the scheme also has Care Workers based on site 24/7, enabling people to live as independently as possible but with the reassurance of support if needed.” Meadow Walk allows couples to continue living together with the support of care workers, who relieve some of the responsibilities of care so residents can concentrate on spending quality time together. In addition, its pet friendly policy means residents can continue to enjoy the companionship of their animals, helping to combat feelings of loneliness of isolation. Its dementia-friendly features include a ‘nostalgia room’ featuring a village store and post office; indoor garden-themed relaxation areas and a potting shed.

There is also a replica of an oldfashioned curiosity shop displaying an array of household items from yesteryear, complete with a traditional-style streetlamp outside. Colour and contrast have been used in the scheme’s design to enable residents with sight impairment and dementia to identify different areas and navigate their way around more easily. This includes colour-coded floors, accessories, and seating. There are murals depicting the local area and each wing is named after a local street. Fabrics have been used throughout featuring images of planting, farms, chicken houses and street scenes, in colours complementing the design of each area of the building. The scheme also harnesses digital technology to increase the safety, comfort and wellbeing of residents. This technology has been built into the scheme during its construction to provide a digital call system connecting residents to each other, the court manager and a24-hour care
line emergency service. Each apartment has a permanently powered, wall-mounted, touch screen android tablet which is connected to a central on-site computer. Residents can raise the alarm by pressing the virtual emergency button, which enables a quicker response than an analogue call system as well as allowing multiple calls to be dealt with at the same time. Tony added: “What makes Meadow Walk special is that by combining the memories associated with years gone by, with the advantages of modern-day technology, we have created a scheme that enables residents to enjoy reminiscing and living independently in a safe and supportive environment where they feel truly at home.” The Housing Digital Innovation Awards is an annual event which this year took place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Housing 21 was shortlisted alongside Myos House by Ongo and Stonewall Housing’s supported accommodation scheme.

Homecare provider announces a new recruitment drive Pam and Norman Riley with dancer Alice Oakley-Jones on the screen.
Resident’s ballet wish comes true STAFF at Lostock Lodge in Lostock Gralam near Northwich helped resident Pam Riley fulfil her wish to see a ballet performance. The wish was fulfilled as part of a ‘Make a wish’ initiative run by Country Court, the company who run the care home. Residents are given the opportunity to tell staff about somewhere they have always wanted to go or a special activity they always wanted to do. Pam has always enjoyed dancing, especially ballet, and spent many years dancing as part of a dance group in Cheshire. She has always retained her passion for ballet and was very excited to have a special live performance just for her. The team at Lostock Lodge got in touch with opera and ballet company Constella OperaBallet who run “Connecting Stars”. The project, funded by Arts Council England, organises free virtual live performances by some
of the country’s finest professional musicians, singers and dancers to care home residents. The initiative was developed during the Covid-19 pandemic when visitors were not allowed inside care homes and helps to help keep older people connected to their hobbies and interests. During an online session, Londonbased professional dancer Alice Oakley-Jones chatted with Pam and her husband Norman and treated them to an exclusive performance. “Pam had a fantastic time,” said home manager Steph Molden. “We set up the big screen in the cinema room so she could fully appreciate the experience and decorated the room with a ballet theme too. She absolutely loved it.” The ‘Make a wish’ initiative has seen residents from across the group enjoy special outings and activities; from scoring goals at Sheffield United Football Club to off-road driving and lots of special day trips and outings.

CARINGWEEKLY
Crewe Mum finds her ideal job on local doorsteps FOR Crewe mum Leah Wilson what felt like an extreme decision to change careers to meet the needs of her growing family has turned out to be the ideal job. Leah is one of a number of Belong at Home community support workers who visit older people living in and around Crewe and Nantwich. Her role is to help them to live their lives in their own homes as independently as possible, including assistance with personal care, domestic tasks, as well as fitness and emotional support. Whilst caring for others has always been her passion, two years ago Leah’s career path took a new direction to enable her to look after and enjoy precious time with her own family. After a decade spent building a career in childcare, climbing the ranks to senior roles in local nurseries, it was when her own children reached school age that Leah faced some resistance from her employer. She said: “I’d asked to start half an hour later in the morning as I couldn’t secure childcare before school hours. The response, in so many words, was to choose between my kids or my career.” Having confided in her younger sibling, a support worker at dementia care specialist Belong Crewe, Leah was encouraged to consider other options which could afford her the flexibility she needed. “My sister said ‘Leah, care is all you know and you can drive, so why not give Belong at Home a go?’”, she added. “At first it felt a bit odd as I didn’t have qualifications in adult care, but that didn’t matter – with support I was able to train on-the-job to become fully qualified.” The mum-of-two initially completed The Care Certificate, designed for those who are new to care, as part of a comprehensive induction
Andrew Bailey with apetito’s Richard Ring.
Governor of the Bank of England visits apetito programme. Since then she has since been promoted to a senior position with Belong at Home, the domiciliary care service from Belong Crewe. “It’s the ideal set-up,” Leah added. “I work the opposite hours to my partner Stephen, a production engineer; so when I’m working he’s at home looking after the family. “A lot of Belong at Home managers have their own families, so they really understand the need for adaptability and work with you to meet your needs.” Looking back at her big decision, Leah is pleased she made the move: “I love all of it. Our visits make our customers’ day; they are living their last years and some customers don’t have family close by and some don’t have any, so you go to work every day knowing you’re making a positive difference to people’s lives. “I’m glad I made the change. Now, I can take the kids to school, which I couldn’t do before, and I also have a job which I love. “I’d say to anyone thinking about it, just go for it – I have a background in care, but as long as you have a passion for looking after others, like me, you can train for the qualifications from day one.”
New online resource launched A NEW online resource led by Queen’s University Belfast has been developed to help bridge the gaps of information to enable carers and their families to make informed decisions around end-of-life care. Advance care planning is a process that supports adults at any age or stage of health in understanding and sharing their personal values and preferences regarding future care and realistic treatment choices. Not only does ACP enable patients and their families to make informed healthcare decisions, it also supports the delivery of high quality care. The launch of an online Covidcentric advance care planning resource for care home staff and family carers aims to increase awareness of ACP and support shared decision making. Lead researcher professor Kevin Brazil said: “Many families of care
home residents have felt like they’ve been left in the dark during the pandemic, anxious that the needs of their loved ones weren’t being heard. “Bringing together experts in ACP, this resource offers information for both families and care home staff to better understand how they can ensure the best standard of ACP is in place, helping to overcome obstacles that Covid-19 has presented.” The online resource was developed in partnership with researchers from the International Observatory on End of Life Care at Lancaster University, Dementia UK and Marie Curie Hospice, Edinburgh. It was co-funded by the Economic and Social Research Council as part of the UK Research and Innovations rapid response to Covid-19, and the Health and Social Care Research and Development Division of the Public Health Agency in NI.
ANDREW Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England, visited apetito’s head office and production kitchens in Wiltshire. He had expressed specific interest in hearing from apetito in relation to its own, and a wider industry, perspective. Andrew was particularly keen to understand current labour market challenges, supply chain and raw material price pressures and the impact upon customer demand. Richard Ring, apetito’s chief financial officer, highlighted the company’s critical role in providing food to some of the most vulnerable in society, across care homes and healthcare. He discussed with the governor the challenge for businesses trying to absorb significant supply chain and energy price rises whilst mitigating impacts for customers at a time of such price volatility and uncertainty. Also on the agenda was the importance of corporate action to address the challenge of climate change, and director of corporate affairs and policy Lee Sheppard highlighted how apetito is taking an industry leading position on its approach to net zero by significantly decarbonising across the company’s supply chain. Andrew was interested to hear how elements of addressing the climate change agenda make good commercial sense as well as being
the right thing to do, a message that needs to be conveyed more widely. He said how impressed he was that apetito was able to combine a successful business with one that really makes a difference to its customers and consumers. apetito spokesperson Richard Ring said: “apetito is proud of its track record of growth and combining that with a mission to make a real difference to the lives of our customers. “Whilst current supply chain pressures are posing real challenges for industry more widely, we remain committed to investing for growth and positioning ourselves as one of the UK’s leading food businesses.” As well as proving essential frontline meal services, the company invests heavily in providing worldleading, specialist nutritional meals to customers living with conditions such as swallowing difficulties and dementia. It has won three Queens Awards for Enterprise in categories of innovation and sustainable developmentMr Andrew began his term on the March 16, 2020 and served as chief executive officer of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) from July 1, 2016 until taking up the role of governor. As CEO of the FCA, Andrew was also a member of the Prudential Regulation Committee, the Financial Policy Committee and the Board of the Financial Conduct Authority. A member of staff at a Blairgowrie care home is celebrating 20 years’ service. Administrator Gill Rennie started work at Muirton House in early 2002. In recognition of her dedication during two decades she was presented with flowers and vouchers. Catherine Russell, manager of Muirton House, said: “Gill is a much valued and loved member of the team. Her colleagues, residents and visitors know if they need anything done or a sympathetic ear Gill is always there for them. She will wash dishes, help in the laundry, go for shopping – nothing is too much trouble. Personally, I am indebted to Gill for her support. Here’s to the next 20 years.”
