The weekly online newsletter for the care sector
Backing for recruitment campaign CARE providers have joined a campaign to recruit more staff into the sector across North Yorkshire. But they have also warned that more needs to be done to make care a more rewarding profession to join. The Independent Care Group is working with North Yorkshire County Council’s ‘Make Care Matter’ campaign to recruit more people into the care of our oldest and most vulnerable. Like the rest of the country, the county is currently suffering from a shortage of care staff. ICG chair Mike Padgham said: “We are 100 per cent with North Yorkshire County Council’s efforts to attract more people into adult social care – it is a vital and rewarding profession, which plays a huge part in maintaining the quality of life of many thousands of people. “Anything that helps to attract more people to join the profession is to be welcomed with open arms. “The shortage of staff in the social care sector is becoming critical and we are pleased to work with the county council and support its campaign to bring more people into this very rewarding, vital service.
“The name of the campaign says it all, as care does matter, very, very much. “ We have to work together to bring more people into this wonderful sector and to persuade the Government that it needs to support the sector more.” He said the Government needed to do more to better fund social care so that those working in it can get better pay, terms and conditions. “At the end of last year, the Government’s own report into care market sustainability reported that care providers were not being paid enough to provide care and that has a huge impact on our ability to recruit and retain staff. “Social care desperately needs root and branch reform and an integral part of that reform will be ensuring there is enough funding within the sector to pay social care staff what they clearly deserve,” he added. “They do a fantastic job but at the moment are undervalued and underpaid. “Care commissioners, like local authorities, do not have enough money to pay providers fairly for the care they commission and so there isn’t enough funding for them, in turn, to pay staff better.”
Councillor opens new care home
The head of a leading care and culture consultancy to the health and social care sector has been awarded the prestigious Order of Australia Medal for ‘outstanding achievement and services’ to the betterment of care for older persons within the Commonwealth (Australia, United Kingdom and Canada). As part of the Australia Day Honours List, Peter Bewert, managing director of Meaningful Care Matters, has been named as one of just over 350 Australians to receive an OAM, which in the Australian honours system confer the highest recognition for exceptional achievement and service. To receive the accolade, recipients must be nominated by their peers, considered by an independent process, and recognised by the nation.

CADLEY Hill View care home in Swadlincote has officially opened its doors thanks to special guest, Councillor Malcolm Gee, the chairman of South Derbyshire District Council. He joined the care team and the local community to cut the ribbon at the official open day event, taking an exclusive tour of the new state-of-the-art facilities which are now open to residents. Home manager David Godrich said: “We were delighted to welcome Councillor Gee to visit our beautiful home and to be able to discuss some of our key initiatives around the personcentred lifestyle delivered at Cadley Hill View. “Our open day event was a fantastic way to meet people within the local community and we have had such an overwhelming response so far from local people. I can’t wait to support our new residents to live life to the full as part of the Cadley Hill View community.” Cadley Hill View is care provider Ideal Carehomes’ latest development and has benefitted from a £12m investment, providing all the finishing touches you would expect from a luxury care home. Coun Gee was interested to hear about the care teams’ commitment to combatting loneliness in older people as David explained how the dedicated activity co-ordinators will provide varied activities through a packed social calendar that is tailored to each resident’s interests and hobbies.

Home celebrates Good CQC report
Centenarian meets great great granddaughter for first time FIVE generations of family got together at Dene Holm Residential Care Home in Northfleet so 100-yearold resident Gwen Smith could meet her first great great granddaughter. It can be difficult to get several generations of family together at the best of times, but with an ongoing pandemic it’s even trickier. It was incredibly special for the whole family, particularly as little Maeva is the first girl to be born to the
family since Gwen’s daughter Sandra 75 years ago. Gwen, who will turn 101 next month, already has five grandsons, eight great-grandsons and six step great grandsons and she was extremely proud to meet the newest addition to the family last week. Unfortunately her cataracts mean she can no longer see very well, but she was still tremendously happy to meet the little one.
SPEEDWELL Court in Southampton’s West End has been recognised as Outstanding when it comes to responsiveness towards its residents’ needs by the CQC following its recent inspection. In its first inspection since the home opened in July 2019, the report found that the care home is exceptionally directed towards meeting the individual needs of its resident, with services delivered in a manner that ‘ensured flexibility, choice and continuity of care.’ Abbeyfield’s chief operating officer Douglas Webb said: “The team at Speedwell Court have worked hard since opening to ensure that standards of care are continuously high, and this report from the CQC is just reward for their efforts. “It is very rarely the case that a new service would get an Outstanding grading, so achieving this for our work in being responsive is especially pleasing. “The whole team at Abbeyfield send their congratulations and thanks to the staff at Speedwell Court.” The report praised the manner in which staff go ‘to exceptional lengths’ to make sure that the favourite pastimes of the residents from before they took up residency are taken into account in planning the care that they receive, with activities promoted that appeal to their interests, yielding ‘exceptional results.’ Examples reported include one resident, who had worked as an art teacher and silversmith, taking part in a charity fashion show held
at the home; enabling residents with specific skills to lead activities in those areas, such as singing workshops and exercise classes; and ensuring that a keen football fan, who could no longer attend matches, was given souvenirs and memorabilia to enable to him to continue to enjoy televised games in a special way. Other activities in which residents can express and develop their hobbies include an arts club, gardening, bridge and maintaining garden furniture. The CQC additionally found that the home is attentive to residents’ individual preferences when developing their care plans. Each plan includes the resident’s likes and dislikes, and ‘guidance for staff to help them deliver extremely personalised care and support.’ They ensure that each person’s mobility and communications abilities can be maximised to allow them to participate in life at Speedwell Court as much as they wish to, and that their cultural, spiritual and religious needs are fully catered for. The report noted that Speedwell Court’s approach enables the residents to develop strong relationships with their fellow residents, staff and volunteer, to take full advantage of the excellent facilities available to them, and to ‘maintain their sense of identity and personality.’ The CQC gave the home an overall rating of Good, with Good ratings in the remaining areas of Safe, Effective, Caring and Well-led.
Operator announces enhanced Real Living Wage DEMENTIA care operator Belong will extend remuneration above the Real Living Wage for its colleagues, increasing its starting salary to a minimum of £10 per hour. Employees of all ages working at Belong’s state-of-the-art care villages and home care services across the North West and West Midlands will now be paid a minimum of £10 per hour on joining, increasing as they progress, according to the seniority and responsibilities of the role. Belong has paid colleagues the Real Living Wage for the past five years, placing it amongst just 9,000 employers in the UK who pay their workforce a wage designed to meet the everyday cost of living. This latest increase to a £10 per hour starting rate widens the differential between Belong’s pay and the minimum National Living Wage, which, from April 2022, is set to rise to £9.50 per hour for those aged over 23, as set out in the government’s most recent budget. It is also higher than the Real Living Wage, which increased to £9.90 for workers outside London last month. Chris Hughes, chief finance officer at Belong, said: “As a not-for-profit organisation, Belong has always been committed to reinvesting in our people and it feels particularly
Belong’s Morris Feinmann site in Didsbury, Manchester. important after what has been an are keen to ensure they are rewarded extremely tough period. accordingly for their contribution, “The pandemic has shone a light on above both statutory law and the the hard work and dedication of those sector. We are fortunate that demand working in the care industry and we for Belong villages and services
remains high, which enabled us to return to pre-pandemic occupancy levels earlier this year, and we have been keen to pass on the benefit of this across the workforce.” Belong’s occupancy is running at an average of 95 per cent across the group of seven care villages, while average UK care home occupancy is still recovering from a fall to 79.4 per cent in 2020 (Knight Frank 2021 UK Care Homes Trading Performance Review). Chris added: “The new rate applies to all colleagues from day one, regardless of their age, as we firmly believe that the rate paid should be determined by the role people are fulfilling rather than being affected by someone’s age. “While we are always looking to do more for our people, we are proud to be paying all employees at or above the Real Living Wage, to be a Gold accredited Investor in People and to have recently featured in The Telegraph Workplace of the Year Awards 2021. “Our aim is that all Belong colleagues can come to work and focus on providing the best support for our customers, confident that their take-home pay reflects their hard work and affords them a decent standard of living.”

Body responds to Fair Rate for Care CARE England has responded to the Government’s proposals to ensure market sustainability and a fair cost of care, outlining key issues, questions and concerns. Care England’s detailed document is in response to the key issues raised by the Charging Reform and Fair Rate for Care proposals and the associated Social Care Charging Reform Impact Assessment. Care England’s document will help guide officials as Build Back Better is established and Parliamentarians as the Health and Care Bill makes its way through Parliament. The key asks from Government include: n To engage with Care England and its members immediately. n To define the guidance given to local authorities in order to ensure a level of consistency rather than individually interpreted local authority approaches to market sustainability. n A national standard for provider cost collection and support the LGA/ADASS approach, to devise a cost collection template for its local authority members, that Care England can help shape and support. n A commitment that post the trailblazer findings, that funds will be provisioned to support role out nationally and that funding will not be restricted to their admitted many hypotheticals, which established the funding to be made available upon which everything is based. n Funding for providers to implement the fair cost of care and the care cap as was afforded to local authorities; the Government state that the Care Cap is predicated by the Fair Cost of Care, and that it cannot be implemented without
Professor Martin Green OBE. support and commitment of providers, and as such, they need to be part of the process from the outset and funded appropriately in order to ensure success. Chief executive Professor Martin Green OBE said:“We encourage DHSC to set out a specific plan of engagement plan outlining out and when adult social care providers will be engaged through this exercise. “Care England is supportive of meaningful reform and it has expressed its support for the principles underpinning the Government’s direction of travel, namely choice, control, quality, fairness, and accessibility for those at the centre of the system. “Integral to this is establishing a fair rate for care. Care England holds that the sentiment laid out the recently published policy papers do not achieve this ambition and we would encourage the Department to consult Care England, and its members, in order to ensure the system promotes fairness for the individual, the taxpayer, the local authority, the NHS and the provider.”
Trip to Ireland rounds off home’s adventure RESIDENTS and staff at a Longfield care home have concluded their three-month camping staycation adventure around the UK with a trip to the Emerald Isle. Setting up their tents one last time, residents at Nellsar’s The Old Downs Residential Care Centre took part in Irish-themed activities and enjoyed traditional decorations, music, cuisine and quizzes from the comfort of their armchairs. Embracing the best of Gaelic culture, staff and residents at the home explored the sights of Belfast, with trips to the Titanic Quarter and Giant’s Causeway, before venturing down to the Republic of Ireland to visit Dublin and share a pint of Guinness with a few mischievous leprechauns. Vira Green, recreation and wellbeing champion at The Old Downs, said: “With decorated backdrops of the Emerald Isle and jaunty Celtic music playing throughout the home, our residents had the perfect round off to their staycation adventure.
“We fully embraced the last hurrah of the trip with some traditional Irish fun, which had to include, of course, a few tipples of Guinness, Baileys Irish Cream and a dram or two of whiskey.” Dubbed ‘Carry on Camping’, the virtual staycation aimed to improve residents’ mental and physical health by enabling them to experience the sights, sounds and tastes of different countries and cultures, while also allowing them to reminisce about previous family holidays. Viv Stead, recreation and well-being manager at Nellsar, added: “Residents and staff at The Old Downs and our other 12 care homes throughout Kent, Surrey and Essex enjoyed a perfect finale to our adventure. “It’s no secret that the past 20 months have been extremely difficult, so we made it our mission to ensure that 2021 was rounded off in style. “The best part about the virtual trip to Ireland was the fact that we had lots of residents of Irish descent, who were delighted to share their stories about past visits.”
