The weekly online newsletter for the care sector

Communities join forces to discuss plans OLDER people from Birmingham’s Lozells, Aston and Handsworth areas came together to discuss plans for a flagship cohousing scheme that will enable them to design and live in a purpose-built community development. Housing 21, a not-forprofit provider of housing for the elderly, met with older people from Lozells to discuss proposals to transform the derelict site of the former 20-storey Clyde Tower apartment block in Chain Walk into the organisation’s first cohousing project. As Covid-19 restrictions have eased, potential residents were able to meet with Housing 21 in person to review plans for the new development, which will be built around their specific needs and requirements. Tony Tench, deputy chief executive for Housing 21, said: “For more than 50 years we have been building retirement living and extra care developments for older people of modest means to enjoy, and we are proud of what we have achieved. “However, for the first time we are inviting people who we want to live in our properties to help us design them from the very beginning, enabling us to

tailor their homes, the wider site and the services to their needs. “Cohousing represents a major breakthrough in the future of housing provision by giving people more choice and control of their future home, as well as creating a sense of community amongst the residents who will come together to bring their vision to life. “This is about more than providing a quality property for people to live in; it’s about creating a community of older people that is integrated with the wider community of Lozells.” At the latest consultation, approximately 20 people attended to discuss ideas about what features they would like the development to include, which have now been submitted to Birmingham City Council’s planning department. In addition to 25 one and two-bedroom apartments which will be available for social rent, the application includes a residents’ lounge/ multi-faith room, landscaped communal garden, parking and an allotment area for residents to grow their own vegetables. The scheme will also include a common house area with a kitchen and open space.

Home shows its support to local club

Care home residents and staff let their hair down, dressed up in Red Noses and glasses, donned crazy hats, wigs, feathers and pom poms, and enjoyed lots of games and activities to raise money for Comic Relief. The day of fun at Colten Care’s 21 homes in the south included cupcake sales, singalongs of vintage comedy songs, hair dyeing sessions, fancy dress parties and exercise bike challenges. Operations director Elaine Farrer said: “Our residents and team members don’t tend to need much excuse to dress up and have fun. We are always delighted when Red Nose Day comes round and we can all get involved and show our support. It’s all about giving vulnerable and disadvantaged people the chance of a better future.” Resident Frank Coumbe is pictured in front of the giant red nose at Woodpeckers in Brockenhurst.

AN EDINBURGH care home has shown its commitment to helping nurture Scotland’s future rugby stars by taking out a year-long sponsorship with a local team. Helping to subsidise travel costs, pitch maintenance and equipment costs, Cramond Residence’s contribution to Stewart’s Melville RFC comes at an exciting time as the club resumes regular matches following more than a year of restrictions. The club currently has three XV squads, with the first and second XVs playing in competitive national leagues and has produced 15 international players since being founded in 1973. The first XV are geared up to play in the Tennent’s National League, Division 2. Christian Daraio, client liaison manager and registered nurse at the 74-bedroom home, said: “Residents, past and present, have been sport enthusiasts, players in their lifetime or have children or grandchildren involved in the game now. “We’ve already had one of our residents attend a complimentary whisky tasting and are looking to get those that are interested down to watch a few games in the better weather and experience the game day atmosphere. “We’re delighted to support Stewart’s Melville as they progress into an exciting 2021/22 season and are looking forward to the year ahead.” The club’s Mini section, the Stew Mel Lions, is one of the largest, with 340 boys and girls turning out at Inverleith every Sunday.

Carer overcomes barriers to build dream career

A MACCLESFIELD carer is encouraging others to think twice about their options, whatever their reservations may be. For Mel Oakes, a support worker who helps older people and those living with dementia, it was the uncertainty of what to do with her life that once presented a challenge when it came to forging her career. But, following a chance invitation to assist a carer at Belong Macclesfield, she found the inspiration to build the career of her dreams. Having left college with a hairdressing qualification, a young Mel found herself bouncing between a variety of jobs; namely, retail, cleaning and working in a chip shop, before landing a role in her late twenties in the on-site bistro at the Belong care village in Upton Priory. She said: “I started off in the kitchens, helping to prepare the food for the residents, their families, and the visiting guests from the community. I enjoyed the work and providing for our customers, though I didn’t think working on the care side could ever be for me. “However, after being asked to help a care colleague one shift, I absolutely loved it and little did I know it would be the first day of a fulfilling career in care. I felt I had even more of a purpose going to work and I was determined to make becoming a carer happen.” Since that pivotal day, Mel jumped at all the opportunities to help the care team, before finally taking the plunge and successfully applying to become a support worker. Caroline Ray, general manager at Belong Macclesfield, added: “Though she didn’t hold any previous qualifications, Mel’s work ethic made her the perfect candidate for ‘The Care Certificate’ which forms part of a carer’s robust induction programme. “It’s on-the-job training which certifies new starters in the

She is currently working toward her NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care, which she hopes to complete in the next few months. She concluded: “I never thought I’d do another qualification after my youth but Belong provides lots of help and guidance for its colleagues to achieve, and being able to help older people enjoy a high quality of life and independence makes it all worth it; the future’s very bright for me.”

Residents enjoy some fruity fun RESIDENTS at Four Seasons and brighterkind care homes across the UK enjoyed some fruity fun during Nutrition and Hydration Week by helping the homes’ chefs come up with a variety of smoothie recipes. The smoothie menu included flavours like peach Melba and kiwi and mango, as well as a more unusual peanut butter and banana blend which went down a treat. Wayne Woolman, chef at The Lawns Care Home in Oadby, Leicestershire, said: “As we get older our bodies may find it harder to store essential fats and sugars so it’s really important to make sure we eat and drink plenty of nutrients. “Drinking smoothies is a good way to maintain a healthy weight and it’s great fun trying different ingredients. It’s easy to fortify smoothies by adding in high energy foods like custard, ice cream, milk powder and

Resident Valerie Jurdison tries a smoothie. honey to increase calories where needed.” Residents also enjoy creating their own dishes as part of the homes’ weekly cookery club activities where anything from curry to cakes to cocktails can be on the menu.

NATIONAL contractor Stepnell has completed works on behalf of Brio Retirement Living to design and build the £29m Beechwood Park – a 106 dwelling luxury retirement living community in Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire. The completed site boasts a range of one, two and three bedroomed bungalows and apartments, each cladded in Cotswold stone. Sustainable living solutions have been incorporated into the design and build, to include district heating, combined heat and power generation, and full home automation. As a result, this project has been awarded the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method ‘‘Very Good’’ standard rating and BRE HQM (Home Quality Mark) Level 3. Designed with a wide range of community facilities and communal areas, the retirement home has landscaped grounds and includes an exercise trail, raised bed gardens and Brio’s brasserie and bar Slate & Grain. Furthermore, there is a purposebuilt social space for recreational activities, club fitness suite, spa and lounge. A shuttle bus is also available for shopping trips and excursions. Colin Chiles, operations director at Stepnell, said: “We are delighted to open the doors to Beechwood Park and to provide a first-class retirement living experience in the heart of the

Cotswolds. “Together with Brio, we have prioritised the environmental performance of the residential community throughout every phase of planning and delivery, which has been recognised as part of the BREEAM accreditation process to achieve “Very Good” standard. This has been achieved as result of a strong collaborative effort.” To achieve the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard, the team demonstrated ‘best practice’ – the performance rating reserved for the top 10% of new UK non-domestic buildings. Colin added: “This development follows a series of retirement village projects in the region, including the recently delivered £5.25m Edwardstow Court in the centre of Stow. “Stepnell has quickly become recognised as a national contractor of choice for retirement developments, which has organically grown through a series of successful partnerships.” The residential units are now available with a range of buy, partown, rent and part-rent options. Stepnell’s completion adds to a growing portfolio of care home projects, which will soon include the £6.5m The Gables in Birmingham and a £4.3m refurbishment project at Town Thorns in Rugby, with work currently underway at both sites.

Care group and hospice launch resource suite Construction begins on dementia care home A CHARITY which provides health and social care while reinvesting any surplus income back into dementia care research will be opening a specialist home in the village of Climping, near the seaside town of Littlehampton, West Sussex. Healthcare Management Trust’s home is a pioneering innovation within the industry, both in terms of its design and the care it offers. It is designed to feel less like a care home and more like a familiar home for residents. Designed over two storeys, the home incorporates four separate wings with 16 bedrooms in each. They are split equally into two distinct households of eight bed “homes,” each with their own domestic kitchen, dining and day lounge spaces. The residents will live in small family “homes” with others at a similar stage of dementia; important for reducing stress and helping in the socialisation for residents. HMT’s unique, research-led approach offers residents a holistic and “family” approach to the physical and mental well-being of each resident. Members of each “family”, where possible, are involved in purposeful day-to-day domestic activities which provide social interactions, value and routine to their day. The preferences, quirks, history and personality traits of each individual are understood and valued by staff. As a result, staff forge genuine and long-lasting relationships with both the resident and their relatives. Chief executive Tony Barrett said: ‘We provide care that gives back. Surplus funds generated through our work are reinvested in scientific Astune Rise care home in Eston near Middlesbrough has proudly ‘done its bit’ to help people affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine. The home appealed to family, friends and the local community to donate toiletries and baby supplies to be taken to a local hub for transportation to the Ukraine border where women and children are in desperate need of everyday items.

research to serve the ageing population. “As a result, HMT offers pioneering, research-led and “family home” focused care to our residents. We are proud to have expanded to a third site and look forward to benefiting local residents through investment, job creation and our residential care offer.” Each unit features generous ensuite bedrooms, communal areas such as lounges, dining rooms, reading rooms, a garden lounge and terraces overlooking the landscaped and secure purpose-designed grounds for people with dementia and their visitors, together with ample car parking. Additional well-being facilities include a hair salon, café, shop and tea room. Highwood Group has started construction of the £10million 64-bed specialist dementia care home, working in partnership with Hunters architects and developer Brackley Investments. HMT will occupy the completed development under a commercial lease. Construction by Highwood is due to be completed in spring 2023, with a prospective opening date by HMT following a specialist fit-out in summer 2023. HMT has previously funded around £1.6million of research grants which look into frontotemporal dementia and fall prevention and personalised physical activity for people with dementia. It is currently funding research through several UK universities looking into cognitive studies, as well as the impact of music, social activities and nutrition upon the wellbeing of people with dementia.

LONDON housing and care provider Octavia and St Christopher’s Hospice has launched a bespoke resource aid for teams working in extra care housing. The ‘Better Lives, Better Endings’ resource utilises a suite of tools to help extra care teams provide better outcomes for residents during the last years of their life, including at the end of life. It was co-designed by Octavia and St Christopher’s and guides care teams through the application of a number of available resources, enabling them to be more confident with dealing with end-of-life care and with supporting residents to ensure their wishes and preferences are met. It also helps address challenges extra care providers face with communicating, understanding, sharing, documenting and advocating for individuals’ wishes about how they want to live their later years, in addition to death, dying and loss. Octavia assistant director for care and support, Neil McCarthy, said: “Residents often live in their extra care home for many years, developing close relationships with their carers and increasingly choosing to make this their home for the rest of their life. “We want them to live well through to the end of their life and this means ensuring people’s wishes about how they want to live, where they would like to die, and what specific plans and preparations they want to make, are met. “This resource helps give care colleagues confidence to have these important conversations with residents, capture wishes and preferences, and work with families, loved ones and health partners, to see them fulfilled.” The Better Lives, Better Endings

Neil McCarthy resource suite supports staff and organisations to be better equipped to meet this growing need. It aids care colleagues to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to be more involved in ensuring residents’ wishes are captured, listened to and acted on in decisions about living through their older years and their end-of-life care. Through its involvement in developing the resource, Octavia’s Care team is already putting into practice a number of new initiatives across its extra care schemes. These include: n Developing end of life champions in schemes. n Strengthening relationships with GPs, local hospices and other parts of the health and care system and informing them of people’s wishes. n Developing a ‘traffic light’ system linked to care plans, to more systematically identify residents with increasing levels of need. n In one scheme, at the suggestion of residents, opening a memorial garden for quiet reflection and to remember former residents who have died. Octavia is now embedding the Better Lives, Better Endings learning with all care colleagues across its extra care schemes.

‘Act to help care in mini budget’ CARE providers have called on the Chancellor for help in this week’s mini budget. Provider organisation The Independent Care Group says social care cannot be forgotten again as the crisis in the sector grows. The ICG fears the Covid-19 pandemic, compounded by lower occupancy and the growing cost of living crisis have all left the sector in danger. Chair Mike Padgham said: “Amongst all the calls the Chancellor will be facing around the statement this week, he must not forget the care of our most vulnerable and must do something to help.” The Government’s own care reforms also pose a danger to the survival of care and nursing homes, unless greater funding is provided, the Group warns. “There isn’t enough funding in the

sector to pay for the changes the Government wants and unless that is addressed, providers will be lost,” Mike added. “We understand their desire to close the gap between the fees paid by private and state-funded care recipients. But unless there is the funding in the system to pay for it there will, as the LaingBuisson reports suggests, be a loss of providers and a rationing of care.” Mike believes social care should be given a greater share of the £12bn promised for health and social care over the coming three years and that the funding should come via income tax rather than increased National Insurance contributions. He said: “We desperately need extra funding and it would be much fairer, particularly during the current cost of living crisis, it such calls on funding were more fairly apportioned.”

Germstar

Alcohol gels are a first line of defence in the fight against germs. But traditional ‘push button’ gel dispensers have a flaw. You have to touch them – and 80% of infectious diseases are transmitted by hand. So even the dispenser becomes a hazard! Germstar’s touchless hand sanitiser does just what it says, eliminating any chance of cross contamination. Just place a hand under the infra-red motion-activated dispenser to receive a measured dose of sanitising liquid rinse capable of killing 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and fungus on contact. It works against H1N1, Norovirus, Gastroenteritis, E Coli, Salmonella, MRSA and just about every other germ that threatens the health of carers and clients. The solution is made of 100% natural emollients and it softens the hands with each use. It is not a gel – so no sticky residue, each solution sachet gives up to 1,400 doses and we’ll install the dispenser free of charge. https://www.germstaruk.com
