Lynn receives special award at ceremony LYNN Laughland, managing director of HRM Homecare Services, has been honoured at Scottish Care’s National Care At Home and Housing Support Awards with a special award recognising her significant contribution to the sector. Lynn, who has been at the helm of the Kilmarnockheadquartered company for nearly three decades, growing HRM Homecare into one of the largest care specialists in the country, received the Strategic Contribution Award at the ceremony at the Radisson Blu in Glasgow. The award recognised Lynn’s huge contribution to the advancement and betterment of the care and support of older people, especially through leadership and involvement in the homecare sector. Under Lynn’s leadership, HRM Homecare has provided care support and critical care services for those most in need, with life challenges including dementia. Lynn said: “I am deeply honoured to have received this award. For 28 years I have worked extremely hard to make HRM Homecare the best at what we do, so to receive such recognition of these efforts from my peers is indeed very humbling. “I would like to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of my staff, who continue to make
a real difference to the lives of people, many of whom have severe life challenges. “Working in care at home, particularly over the last two years throughout Covid-19, has been very challenging, but it has also been highly rewarding to see people in the sector rise to that challenge.” The company now supports 800 service users and provides more than 10,000 hours per week of support, while promoting independence and encouraging older people, children and families, plus adults with disabilities to continue to live well at home. Lynn’s commitment to her own personal development has seen her achieve several qualifications including MScs in Social Work and Dementia Studies, and Post-Graduate Diplomas in Community Care and Social Services Leadership. During Covid-19, Lynn grew the company’s workforce by 20 per cent, which now stands at 295 people. During that period she has continued to provide guidance and support to those involved in the industry. She has also set out her vision of how a growing, successful care sector could drive forward a different future that could see the sector become a significant economic driver for Scotland, providing thousands of new well-paid jobs.

Residents of a Dorset care home may not have been able to attend Royal Ascot ‘Ladies Day’ in person, but that didn’t stop them donning their favourite hats and dresses for the occasion. The third day of Royal Ascot is commonly known as Ladies Day, when race-goers show off stylish and sometimes elaborate headwear and outfits. At Colten Care’s Kingfishers in New Milton, residents including Wendy Webber, Joan Hales (pictured), Florence O’Dell and Bunty Patrick were clear winners when it came to tasteful elegance. Kingfishers companionship team leader Rose Arcellana said: “It was a beautiful day to celebrate Royal Ascot and all our ladies looked fantastic. We didn’t leave the gentlemen out though. We had competitions to name our own Ascot horses and our chef made scones for an afternoon tea. A fabulous day was had by all.”

Home wins third national Group supports charity to acquire defibrillator award for end-of-life care Nikki Magness from Sussexdown care home with Pat Glue.
CARE South has selected RAFA Housing Ltd as one of the latest beneficiaries of its Chairman’s 2020 Fund, awarding the charity £774.50 to install a new public access defibrillator. The new defibrillator has been installed in a highly visible protective cabinet at Stanmore House for use by the Sussexdown care home, the RAFA Housing Ltd retirement complex and the general public. Chief executive Simon Bird said: “We are delighted to be able to support this incredible charity which is widely recognised by the team and residents at Sussexdown, as well as the wider community. “The work they do to provide retirement housing for RAF veterans and their dependants is very important, and we are so pleased the grant has gone towards this fantastic lifesaving equipment for
those who may need it.” The Chairman’s 2020 Fund was set up with the aim of supporting ‘Care South’s Friends’ and has been established with the aim of benefiting the operator’s employees, volunteers and community groups that provide a community service to the group’s care homes, care at home offices, clients and/or residents. Care South’s Sussexdown care home team, based in Storrington, unanimously nominated RAFA Housing Ltd to be a 2022 beneficiary. Pat Glue, independent living manager at RAFA Housing Ltd, added: “We are so thankful to Care South for this generous donation to fund such an essential health device. Knowing the defibrillator is on site will, I’m sure, bring peace of mind to our tenants and to the wider community.”
A DEMENTIA specialist care home in Bampton, Oxfordshire has been awarded a national Gold Standards Framework Quality Hallmark Award for its delivery of end-of-life care during the pandemic. Rosebank Care Home has been re-accredited with the Quality Hallmark certificate by GSF for demonstrating excellence in care standards and showcasing evidencebased best practice in end-of-life care during the Covid-19 pandemic. The prestigious award places Rosebank in a select group of care homes, primary care settings, domiciliary care agencies and hospitals in the United Kingdom, and one of only five in Oxfordshire to be recognised for delivering the highest standards of care. The award was given at a virtual ceremony which recognised health and social care providers delivering quality care in the final year of life. Rosebank care home manager Vanessa Lavender said: “I am thrilled
to see that the hard work put in by our dedicated team has been recognised once again through this accreditation. Our residents and their wellbeing are truly at the heart of everything we do. “We are passionate about ensuring the highest standards of care are in place, and we work hard to sustain those standards, so to receive this award for the third time is a testament to a consistent team effort. “We are very proud of ourselves and what we have achieved through the pandemic, and this particular accreditation will mean that we have held this award for close to 10 years.” Before the pandemic hit, GSF provided face-to-face workshops, but have successfully adapted and moved online to adhere to Covid-19 regulations. The training has been largely successful in supporting both families and patients to discuss end-of-life care planning and what matters to them at the end of life.
Operator and charity announce partnership to make breakthroughs in dementia research SIGNATURE Senior Lifestyle and Alzheimer’s Research UK have announced they will work together to raise awareness of dementia and funds to support vital research into a treatment for the condition. The care home provider, which has 36 care homes across London and the south east, has teamed up with the charity and will be raising funds to support its vital dementia research. Michele Saunders, head of dementia at Signature Senior Lifestyle, said: “Through Alzheimer’s Research UK’s own findings we know that unless we act now, one in three people born today will develop dementia – taking away their ability to walk, talk or recognise the people they love most. This is a truly heartbreaking statistic. “Through our own dementia care offering and strategy, we recognise how crucial it is to support residents and their loved ones following a dementia diagnosis. “By working with Alzheimer’s Research UK we will ensure we are continuing to make a difference to residents living with dementia, each and every day.

CARINGBIRTHDAYS An Andover care home resident’s wish came true when she had the chance to dance the waltz at her 102nd birthday party. Mary Duncan celebrated her milestone birthday at Millway House, where staff had arranged for a professional dancer to walk her through her favourite ballroom dance. Mary, whose recipe for living a long life includes exercise and fresh air, learned to dance at the age of seven, and couldn’t wait to be “whisked” around the care home with now retired ballroom dancer Dave Turner. And, with the birthday girl requesting a blue theme for her party, staff and residents wore something in Mary’s chosen colour and celebrated her special day with tea and birthday cake. A resident at a Basildon care home has celebrated her 100th birthday. Florence Ponti (Flo) marked the special occasion at Mundy House with a tea party surrounded by family, residents and staff. Flo, who is one of six children, was born in Southwark, South London. After leaving school she trained as a court dressmaker with Norman Hartnell, a British fashion designer who was best known for designing gowns for the royal family. When World War II broke out she was called up to join the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, where she worked across many different roles assisting in the war efforts. After the war she went back to her dress making roots and worked until she finally retired aged 75. Flo met and married Joseph Ponti and went on to have four children – two boys and two girls. She now has 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, with two more on the way. Signature at Purley recently celebrated the 103rd birthday of resident Joyce Town. To mark the occasion the care home hosted all five generations of Joyce’s family for a day spent enjoying quality time together, involving lots of cuddles with baby Ewan, the most recent addition to the family. Joyce had the pleasure of welcoming daughter Gillian, grandson Andrew, great granddaughter Victoria and her great-great grandson Ewan to Purley, where she has lived since turning 100. Joyce had two daughters and twin boys having married her husband in 1941, and regularly helped out at her grandchildren’s infant school upon retirement, as well as playing piano for the local dancing school. A soldier who narrowly survived enemy attacks while serving in Burma (now Myanmar) during WWII has celebrated his 100th birthday. Peter Whiteley was born in Burma on June 14, 1922 and celebrated his birthday at Royal Star & Garter in Surbiton. The Great Grandad enjoyed an outdoor party with family in the home’s garden before celebrating with other residents. As well as his birthday card from Her Majesty The Queen, Peter also received a letter from the Burma Star Memorial Fund, on behalf of its patron Prince Charles. He attained the rank of captain and left the Army in 1946. Peter then moved to India, where he lived until 1976, and then Zimbabwe) where he stayed for a further 10 years. He returned to the UK following the death of his wife Edith. Peter later remarried, and moved to Royal Star and Garter with his wife Colleen in 2019. She sadly died later that year.
Joyce Clarke celebrated her 100th birthday at Royal Star & Garter’s Solihull Home with a day packed full of treats and surprises. She has been a resident at Royal Star & Garter since 2018. Joyce’s family joined her on the Royal Star & Garter minibus for a surprise drive around the Solihull and Sheldon areas where she grew up. The trip down memory lane also saw Joyce and her family visit old abodes and places of work. Joyce and her family then returned to the Home where she was treated to her favourite lunch of roast lamb with mint sauce. Residents joined Joyce and her family for a party, where they enjoyed cream tea and champagne, and live music.
Residents and staff at Langfield Care Home in Middleton, Manchester came together to celebrate Nora Blomely’s 100th birthday. Nora, born in 1922, enjoyed her special day reminiscing with staff about her remarkable and full life with her husband William, who passed away in 1971. Staff organised a party so Nora could celebrate her special day surrounded by the people and things she loves, including live music from a local singer who got her family and fellow residents up on their feet dancing. She also received numerous bouquets of flowers, chocolates and sweets and lots of thoughtfully written letters, including a card from the Queen. Langfield in Langley has been home to Nora for nearly 10 years.
Margaret James celebrated her 100th birthday at Castle Farm Retirement Home in Lytchett Matravers with family travelling from the Netherlands, America and some from a little closer to home. Everyone raised a glass to celebrate with her, and all enjoyed a slice of her birthday cake. Margaret previously regularly enjoyed spending time on hobbies such as sewing, knitting and cooking, but in more recent days she has loved listening to her favourite music whilst keeping up to date on the world’s news. She worked in the WAAF during World War II and used to take pilots and sometimes the bombs to their planes. Her last job was as a supervisor at one of the local middle schools in Broadstone. Staff and residents at Ferrars Hall celebrated the 101st birthday of Emily Ramsey recently. Emily has lived at the Huntington Care Home since November 2019 and says her secret to a long life is hard work, her loving family and the carers looking after her at Ferrars Hall. Staff held an afternoon tea party for Emily complete with balloons and a cake baked by chef Caroline Tyrkot. she was joined by her family and had a lovely time opening her cards and gifts. Emily also enjoyed a game of birthday bingo with her friends at the party. Emily has two sons, three daughters plus many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was married to her first husband for 40 years, three years after she married the gardener so her children call her Lady Chatterley.

Home unveils new Namaste room ROGERS House has unveiled its new Namaste room, offering intensive sensory stimulation for the residents living with dementia. Designed and decorated entirely by the activity team, the bright and open room at the Wigmore residential care home includes recycled wooden pallets in a bid to bring the outside in, as well as being environmentally conscious. Activity coordinator Hannah Newman-Brown said: “We’ve worked hard to create a soothing and attractive environment for the residents, including lots of fundraising and doing all the decorating ourselves, so we are incredibly proud of how it has turned out and are thrilled that it is now up and running. “I have no doubt that having this dedicated, uninterrupted time and space set aside for quiet one-to-one interaction with the residents will support us in continuing to deliver an exceptional level of care and support, that is person-centred.” The room will enable residents to benefit from person-centred care in a calm environment, specifically tailored for those living with dementia. Staff have been trained to deliver Namaste Care sessions, which can

The programme was developed in America with title ‘Namaste’ meaning ‘to honour the spirit within’. It is designed to engage people with advanced dementia through stimulating the five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing.
Homecare provider ascends Snowdon to raise funds A TEAM from Bluebird Care Swindon led by registered manager Kelly Torr have successfully climbed Mount Snowdon on a nine-mile hike along the Llanberis path. The walk raised more than £500 to contribute towards day trip expenses for the homecare operator’s customers. Kelly said: “As our first activity together since becoming registered manager of Bluebird Care Swindon I feel tremendously proud of the whole team. “From the care professionals cheering us on back home in Swindon to the team that walked up the mountain. “The climb was incredibly challenging, both physically and
mentally. We came together as a family unit and pushed forward until we reached the end.” Taking on a route that typically takes six hours to complete, the team ascended to the peak of Wales’ tallest mountain in four hours and 17 minutes. At the peak of the 1,085m high summit, they enjoyed views of Snowdonia, Anglesey, the Llyn Peninsula and even Ireland. Despite challenging weather conditions that claimed items of headwear, the team was able to navigate the mountain’s blustery altitude, and Sean ThurstonBurridge, of Welsh nationality, was able to wave the Welsh colours at the peak with pride.
Home partners with church to offer residents diverse and inclusive activities
A SPECIALIST Cambridgeshire care provider has once again partnered with a local community church to promote the mental and physical well-being of its residents through engaging activities – specially designed for those with learning disabilities and in their old age. Askham Village Community, near Doddington, recently welcomed the services of Fenland Community Church, a family-run organisation that seeks to call upon the power of religion to dismantle stereotypes and to view everyone as equals, regardless of their age or disability. Through a combination of drama, music and other sensory focussed activities, the group’s universal aim is to bring a smile to the faces of social care residents — something it undoubtedly achieved during the recent visit to Askham, where a total of 18 residents were entertained in the Atrium of Askham House. The church group will now visit on a monthly basis following a successful day promoting mental and physical well-being through engaging activities. Jo Monaghan, head of care and
nursing and registered manager at Askham Hall and Askham House, said: “Partnering with activity providers like Fenland Community Church is an integral part of our diverse care offering. “Seeing the smiles on residents’ faces highlights just how important it is to keep them engaged with stimulating activities. Their approach reflects our own ethos here at Askham — where all individuals are equal regardless of their mental or physical condition.” Due to popular demand from both staff and residents, Fenland Community Church is now visiting us every month and will continue to encourage those staying with us to engage and have fun within a completely accepting environment.” The group used to visit Askham regularly and has done for more than 15 years, however, due to the hardships of the pandemic, this has not been possible for the last two. Some of the residents in attendance suffer from advanced dementia so the sensory engagement of such activities proved vital for their cognitive wellbeing.
Revolutionising social care training with virtual reality ENHANCING health and social care training with virtual and augmented reality, White’s Training is looking to modernise the sector and make the training process as realistic as possible. Often, those who are starting a career in social care are unaware of the full extent of the job they are going to be doing – but with the help of White’s Training virtual reality courses, staff will be fully immersed into a learning environment that depicts a real-life scenario that they could be faced with. Staff retention and interaction rates have taken a decrease in the past couple of years, with Skills for Care highlighting that there was a 34.4 per cent care worker turnover in 2021. Praise has been pouring in from residents and staff of a Bridgwater dementia care home for the creative talents of maintenance man Waldemar Perlik, who has conjured up an impressively authentic ice-cream cart using a few old bits of furniture, MDF and a wheel from an old wheelchair. Waldemar – better known to residents as Wally – said: “I enjoy making things with my hands, and I understand that sometimes the things that may bring the most pleasure to our residents can be a bit old-fashioned and not easy to get hold of. So creating something like the ice-cream cart from scratch, using whatever I can find, may be the only affordable solution. The cart took me a while to put together, but the smiles on their faces tell me it was worth all the effort.”
