Village unveils new ‘back to health’ stays RICHMOND Villages Astonon-Trent has launched its Back to Health Centre with an open day that included a talk from a former patient. Designed for over 55s who are recovering from elective surgery, these personalised stays help people rebuild their strength, confidence and independence, allowing them to return home with renewed vigour. Visitors to the open day were able to meet the centre’s dedicated healthcare professionals, talk to experts about how the Back to Health Centre can help patients regain confidence and independence after surgery, and meet the village manager Kerstin Taylor. She said: “Helping people live a long, happy and healthy life is our number one priority at Richmond. “Everything is focused around ensuring our patients get the very best possible support, helping to prepare them for returning back home again as quickly, safely and confidently as possible. “Where patients need longer or ongoing care, our villages are also designed to provide other support facilities. “We believe passionately that our villages should look and feel like a home from home and an opportunity to develop new friendships and enjoy new experiences in later life.”
There was also the chance to explore the facilities, including the private bedrooms and suites, the wellness spa, salon and treatment rooms, the restaurant and the landscaped gardens. Visitors were able to meet Eileen Cunningham, a former patient who spent time at the village after a fall leaving her with eight broken ribs and a broken leg. Eileen spoke with great enthusiasm about how the centre helped her recovery from her ordeal and provided her with the support, relaxing environment and friendly encouragement to improve her mobility and confidence before returning home. Each Back to Health Centre stay includes a personalised reablement plan suited to the individual needs of each patient to allow people to return to full health at the right pace for their circumstances. Patients have access to a dedicated team of skilled healthcare professionals, as well as all the facilities Richmond Villages has to offer, including full access to the wellness spa, gym, hair and beauty salon, restaurant, activities and extensive gardens and woodlands. Richmond Villages offer a support package which allows for up to 10 hours of registered domiciliary care per week.

Paula wins group’s Care Professional of the Year award TELEVISION’S Lorraine Kelly revealed the winner of Home Instead’s Care Professional of the Year award, recognising Paula McCarthy for making old age a positive time for her clients, including singing together, going through old memories and bringing some much-needed sparkle to their lives. The home care company’s annual ‘Care Professional of the Year’ recognises the caring superstars across Home Instead’s network of 245 franchise offices; those that have gone to great lengths to keep clients safe and well at home. The three finalists for this year’s award were treated to an afternoon tea at The Shard in London, attended by Lorraine, as a thank you for their tireless hard work. Winner Paula McCarthy from Home Instead Chingford particularly stood out for many reasons, not least due to the exceptionally close bond she formed with one of her clients. Even before she became her client, Paula would observe this lady when out and about, and would wonder how she could help her manage her frailty. A stroke of serendipity meant that Paula eventually became this lady’s care professional, making it possible for her stay at home and not move into residential care, which is what the client originally thought she needed to do. Aware that this lady doesn’t have any immediate family or visitors, Paula extended her availability to seven days a week when the pandemic hit, giving much-needed company at what could have been a lonely time for her. She said: “Being a care professional is such a rewarding job because you’re giving back to people; mainly to people who live on their own, and some don’t have any family. “I take so much pleasure in helping others, so to hear that I have made a difference fills me with so much pride. I’m delighted to win this award and I’m excited to hear about future winners who treat the job with so much commitment and compassion.” Mick King from Home Instead Cleveland, whose empathy for clients shines through in his role, was
Caring is sharing opinions at Edinburgh care home Martin Jones, CEO of Home Instead UK, award winner Paula McCarthy and Lorraine Kelly. another finalist. Having experienced serious illness himself, he has supported clients with cancer and particularly helped those who have made the decision to stop treatment. Not only do his clients view him as family, they admire his fundraising efforts, including charity events he has run for Home Instead and external charity organisations. The third finalist was Lesley Hunter from Home Instead South East Northumberland, who has always been a source of comfort for clients. She has brought a lot of joy to the community too, including when she placed pebbles she’d painted outside the front doors in an over 55s apartment block. It was during the height of the pandemic, and this act of kindness went a long way for the residents who appreciated the heart-warming gesture at a worrying time. Martin Jones, CEO of Home Instead UK, added: “I’d like to congratulate our three Care Professional of the Year finalists. Paula is a deserving winner, having done so much for people in her community, truly going above and beyond. “This is also a chance for me to express my gratitude to each of our care professionals; it gives me great pleasure and pride to watch you change our clients’ lives for the better.”
AN EDINBURGH care home has enhanced its care with the resumption of monthly resident meetings after Covid restrictions were lifted. Residents at Cramond Residence will have the chance to engage in active, regular discussions about their experience in the home and to provide open and honest feedback. The meetings were halted at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic but care home management believe the facility is an important aspect in promoting independent lifestyles and ensuring residents are mentally fulfilled. Managing director Graeme Kelly said: “We are delighted to be adding the resident monthly meetings back into our already jam-packed schedule at the care home. “It will provide our residents with the perfect opportunity to raise any queries so that we can continue improving and adapting, and above all, continue putting the needs of the residents at the heart of everything we do. “Cramond Residence provides an array of activities and specialised,
tailored programmes and receiving feedback is an important way of confirming that we are meeting the needs of our residents and maintaining our status as a highquality care home, providing the best possible care.” Staff will be able to respond to any question on the running of home – from daily food menus and programmes of activities to the general service – all aimed at promoting community inclusivity. The monthly meetings have been designed to give residents a key role in their own health and wellbeing and aligns with the home’s ethos of ensuring residents continue to live interesting and fulfilling lives, doing things they want to do on their own terms. Graeme added: “The resident meetings are optional however, we fully encourage all of our occupants to attend in order to get the best outcomes. “We are really looking forward to adding this highly worthwhile service back into our programme of events and will welcome any feedback that we receive.”
Green fingered resident visits St. Andrews Botanic Garden Bluebird Care Petersfield and Havant has launched a recruitment drive after a continued expansion saw them move to a bigger new office in the heart of the community. The provider’s success has seen them need to move to a state-of-the-art, modern base at Rotherbrook Court in Petersfield, after outgrowing their previous office at Charles House in the town centre. Managing director Norman Murphy said: “Unlike the uncertainty of some jobs, Bluebird Care can offer a secure, stable and extremely rewarding career. Given the current cost of living crisis, this is vital to our team and thankfully our continued growth means we have vacancies for more local people to join us.”
BERT McKenzie, an 80-year-old resident at Roselea House Care Home in Cowdenbeath, Fife enjoyed a seaside trip to St. Andrews. A keen gardener, he visited the Botanic Garden where he shared a few tips of his own with staff members. The visit was organised by Roselea House manager Ruth Goodman as part of the home’s weekly bus trip programme, which provides residents with opportunities to keep happy and
healthy. Care home staff joined Bert on the visit, tucking into a picnic and icecream in the coastal breeze. She said: “Bert is a treasure trove of wisdom when it comes to gardening, and it was wonderful to hear him share his knowledge as we went round the Botanic Garden. “His passion puts a smile on the face of everyone at the care home and we are excited to enjoy a summer of sunshine together.”

Labour’s National Care Service plan welcomed CARE providers have welcomed Labour Party proposals to create a National Care Service. The plan, revealed by Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting, puts staff pay and training and stronger national standards at its core. The Independent Care Group has welcomed the plan, which echoes the setting up of the NHS back in 1945. Chair Mike Padgham said: “A National Care Service is something we have campaigned for now for some 20 years or more as it would set social care provision on a par with NHS care and create cradle to the grave care in this country. “I agree that any such service must place the status and recognition of the social care workforce at its heart. There must also be room for public, private and charitable provision through small and larger providers, to ensure choice. “At the end of the day this is an opposition party proposal and dependent upon the Labour Party gaining power for its fruition. “But it is good to have the idea become part of the conversation around care, even if it is short on detailed proposals at this stage. “We cannot continue as we are, with
Mike Padgham 1.5m people living without the care they need and care providers closing on a daily basis. Something has to change, root and branch reform must come and we welcome this proposal into the debate.” Short term the ICG wants to see social care’s share of the Health and Social Care Levy to be urgently fasttracked to the frontline to help with staff recruitment, improving staff pay and social care delivery where it is needed.
A disabled artist who paints with his mouth has amazed residents at a Dorset care home who witnessed his skills and technique close up. Rob Trent spent an afternoon at Colten Care’s Castle View in Poundbury demonstrating his artistry to produce a picture of a robin on the branch of a tree in winter. Rob was born with arthrogryposis, a condition affecting the joints and muscular development. He developed his talent in art, particularly landscapes and nature scenes, after a home tutor encouraged him to paint by holding the brush in his mouth. Joining him at Castle View were residents with an interest in art including Elizabeth Thompson and historian and former school master George Clarke, who continues to paint despite his degenerative eyesight.
Couple celebrate 70th wedding anniversary A COUPLE living at Signature at Bentley House in Hertford have celebrated 70 years of marriage. Alan and Brenda Barrick celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary at a celebration organised by the home’s staff. The couple arrived at Bentley House during the midst of the Covid pandemic in March 2020, with team members at the home being overjoyed to be able to help them mark their seven cherished decades they have spent by each other’s side. As part of the celebration at the care home Alan and Brenda enjoyed a special lunch together surrounded by flowers and presents brought in by their loved ones, and plan to celebrate with family in the near future. Client liaison manager Cassie Hinton said: “We are very proud to have been able to organise such a special moment for Alan and Brenda, we are all in awe of their astonishing 70 years together and we wish them many more to come.” Their story began when they first met purely by chance after both being invited by Alan’s brother’s neighbour to view his farm, which is where they
caught each other’s interest and later courted. Alan, 95, is a retired chief engineer and Brenda, 92, initially trained at St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping as a nurse but decided to become a nursery nurse. Both enjoyed their roles thoroughly as their professions matched their respective personalities and skills. They were married in 1952 at All Saints Church in Nazeing Common, Hertfordshire in the presence of all their friends, family and loved ones. Soon after Alan and Brenda were able to start a family of two children and enjoy married life raising their family together having settled in Roydon. They have embraced their new and extended role as grandparents to two grandchildren, who they are now able to see regularly since Covid restrictions have eased. As a gesture from colleagues at Signature at Bentley House a few days after their celebrations the couple were gifted a photograph that was taken of them together on their 70th wedding anniversary in a frame to keep as a cherished and everlasting memory.
Wish campaign relaunched BLUEBIRD Care Windsor, Maidenhead and Bracknell has relaunched its ‘Genie in a Bottle’ wish campaign. The heart-warming initiative was introduced by the team last year as a way of giving back to customers who had faced a difficult period because of the pandemic. Providing an opportunity to make the wishes of customers in their care a reality, this proved to be a huge success. Business development manager Rebecca Hawkins said: “We are very much looking forward to bringing back our ‘Genie in a Bottle’ campaign and opening this out to our local community. “Isolation has always been something we have tried to reduce among our customers by taking them out to social events and holding our own social events throughout the year. “The pandemic enhanced this and now we want to be there to support
Staff receive prestigious award people back into society.” Originally available only to customers living in Windsor, Maidenhead and Bracknell, this year the campaign will be rolled out across all the homecare provider’s territories, including Reading and Wokingham. It will also be opened to the community for the first time, as they look to make the wishes of up to three nominees come true.
DEIDRE Johnson, manager of RMBI Care Co. Home Barford Court, in Hove, has received a British Citizen Corporate Award in recognition of her leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, all staff members at the home, which supports older people with residential care and residential dementia support, have been awarded a British Citizen Award Certificate of Recognition for their ‘exceptional endeavours in the workplace community.’ Deidre said: “It’s a real honour to be
recognised for the work that we do, as well as each of our staff members, who go over and above every day to support the residents within our care. “It has been a challenging few years, but we have emerged stronger and closer as a team.” The British Citizen Awards help to recognise individuals doing extraordinary things in the local community. Anyone can be nominated for an award, providing they have had a meaningful impact on those around them.

Louise raises more than £5,000 with skydive
Teams support London Pride TEAM members from 19 different Care UK homes paraded through the streets of London to show their support for London Pride and underline the provider’s commitment to equality and diversity. Staff from the operator’s central support teams based in Colchester, as well as those from several homes including Asterbury Place in Ipswich, Dashwood Manor in Basingstoke, Bickerton House in Bracknell, Queen’s Court in Windsor, Amberley Lodge in Purley, Millers Grange in Witney and Davers Court in Bury St Edmunds took part in the parade to show their support for the LGBT+ community. Eileen Coyle-Jones, regional director for Care UK’s West London homes, said: “The two main values that we share with London Pride are equality and diversity. “Care UK is delighted to have taken part in the event since we are dedicated to promoting equality
of opportunity for all, including employees, job applicants, residents, and visitors. “The fact that so many of our Care UK colleagues participated in the parade is thrilling.” This was the third time that Care UK has taken part in the London Pride parade. When the team first took part in the parade in 2018 the group launched its official LGBT+ Network, which continues to provide training and guidance to team members on LGBT+ related issues, as well as developing an open culture in every care home. This year was a significant year for the Pride movement and the LGBT+ community as they were commemorating 50 years since the first event took place in the UK. It is also a significant year for Care UK as its homes will celebrate the organisation’s 40th anniversary in September.
LOUISE Broadbelt, a member of the team at Signature at Esher, has raised £5,742 for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity with a skydive. The concierge team member fell from a height of 10,000 feet at speeds of 120mph to raise money for a new centre at specialist cancer hospital The Royal Marsden Sutton. She said: “I was absolutely terrified and have never done anything like this before. I’m so pleased that I have done it and raised so much for a fabulous charity.” Louise’s decision to undertake the daring feat stemmed from her own personal battle with cancer. Last July she was diagnosed with stage three cervical cancer, and was immediately put under the care of The Royal Marsden Sutton. Here, she received much of her treatment, from radiotherapy to chemotherapy and brachytherapy. Louise continues to be a patient of the Royal Marsden, undertaking a clinical trial for immunotherapy, a treatment that uses a person’s own immune system to fight cancer. The results of this could improve treatment for countless cervical cancer patients in the future and is a programme Louise is proud to be a part of. Whilst an extremely challenging period in her life, Louise’s motivation to take to the skies arose from the fantastic people working at Royal Marsden Sutton who have cared and
supported her over the last year. The money raised by her skydive will contribute towards the £5million needed to open Royal Marsden Sutton’s new Oak Centre. This facility will speed up the translation of worldleading research into breakthroughs in treatment and care, transforming the lives of cancer patients at The Royal Marsden and beyond. Joanna Perry, client liaison manager at Signature at Esher, added: “I was incredibly proud of Louise for taking part in the skydive for The Royal Marsden Sutton. “Louise has been through a lot this past 12 months, with so many appointments, scans, and treatments. Yet despite this, she has been so cheerful and positive all the way through. We were all over the moon to see her complete her skydive.”

Anchors away for care provider’s residents ORCHARD Care Homes is giving residents an opportunity to embark on a culinary tour of the Mediterranean in the comfort of their own homes. ‘Setting sail’ in the near future, residents across the group’s facilities in the North of England and the Midlands will be boarding a virtual Mediterranean culinary cruise, sampling the local cuisine from six destinations, including France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Morocco. The six themed days will take place over a six-week period and homes will be organising activities and entertainment around the appropriate country theme. Tasting sessions and activities throughout the day will complement main meals and staff and residents are encouraged to dress up in the style of the countries. Catering lead Jason Hunter came up with the unique concept after talking to residents about their past holiday experiences, with many reminiscing about the food they enjoyed on their travels. “Meal times are always a highlight of social activity and our residents will be able to savour local cuisine in the safety of their own environment,” he said. “Nutrition is key to a healthy body and mind, and we aim to cater for every dietary requirement.
Richard Dobinson and Alison Byard with Sarah Penfold, Julie Roper, William Simpson, Ella Stephenson and Jean Legassicke.

The first prize of £5,000, second prize of £2,000 and third prize of £1,000 will go towards resident funds for future activities.

Alison said: “Riverside House and its residents have done a great job in creating a snapshot of life from their point of view that will inform the community of what life was like here in years to come. “It was a real honour to be involved in the ceremony to bury the time capsule and I also thoroughly enjoyed meeting and chatting to the residents
afterwards. “Inviting me here in my capacity of Mayor of Morpeth is a reflection of how keen Riverside House is to be an integral part of the community. “It had a strong reputation for this pre-Covid and it is fantastic to see it is rekindling old relationships and forging new ones now that pandemic restrictions have eased.” Refreshments were provided at the ceremony’s conclusion and the Mayor stayed to chat to residents. Richard Dobinson, Riverside House activities co-ordinator, said: “We saw this as an opportunity to capture a moment in our community’s history and to create a lasting commemoration of the home and its residents. “Residents have picked or suggested items that reflect their interests, backgrounds and routines as well as life in Morpeth in recent times. “It will help future generations learn about what things were like in 2022 and gain a flavour of what Riverside House was like at that time.” The capsule has been placed in the home’s gardens and marked by a plaque at the spot where it has been buried. An octogenarian couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at a West Midlands care home – marking 60 years of happy matrimony and an abundance of family-filled memories. Staff at Macc Care’s Wulfrun Rose near Wolverhampton recently helped Dorothy and Bob Hawkins mark their milestone occasion with a buffet and the opportunity to share a glass of champagne with family and friends. To ensure she felt anniversary-ready, Dorothy was treated to a full pamper session, which included having her hair done, a facial, makeup and a manicure. The care team ensured that the activities room was appropriately adorned with 60-themed decorations and balloons. Dorothy moved into Wulfrun Rose last December.
