The weekly online newsletter for the care sector
Carers reunite with former school teacher THREE carers have been reunited with their former secondary school teacher in a Scottish home – with their roles reversing as the trio now look after and care for her. Jamie Giles, 37, Diane Ferry, 46, and Natasha Maunder, 30, are all carers at Balquhidder House, near Alexandria, part of Handsale Care Homes, and they have a host of fond memories of their school days, including their former teacher, 72-year-old resident Irene Mowatt – whom Natasha credits as inspiring her to get into the care sector. Irene dedicated more than 30 years of her life to teaching English Literature, starting at Sacred Heart High School in Paisley, before retiring from Vale of Leven Academy in 2007 – following 22 years of service. What started as a studentteacher relationship in the classroom has now transitioned into a tale of friendship and support following Irene’s move into care – proving that timeless friendships can be forged at any age, anytime, anywhere. Jamie, who has worked in care since she was 23, said: “Irene is a wonderful lady and we have such a laugh together. She always brightens my day and sometimes we reminisce about my school days which never fails to bring a smile to both our faces. Irene was an amazing teacher and it’s because of her that I passed my higher English exam – and for
that I’ll always be grateful!” Diane, who is in her sixth year as a care assistant at Balquhidder House, added: “I feel a great deal of privilege in helping Irene in her latest journey here. I remember her as a no-nonsense teacher – even the toughest students tended to behave in Mrs Mowatt’s classes.” Natasha, who has been working in the social care sector since she was a teenager, added: “It means a lot caring for Irene as she was my teacher at secondary school for my first and second year. “I lacked a lot of confidence at school, so Irene worked really hard to build that up by throwing me into situations I wouldn’t usually put myself in, such as reading in front of the class. Looking back, it really went a long way to help me come out of my shell. Looking after Irene gives me immense pride and I feel like I’m able to give back to someone who had such an influential role in my education, which, of course, played a major role in my decision to become a carer. All I can say is thank you, Irene – for everything.” Rishi Sodha, Handsale’s care director, said: ““I know it brings a real sense of joy and genuine reward for Jamie, Diane and Natasha to reunite with one of their favourite teachers – and they’re relishing the chance to nurture and care for someone who played such a key part in their formative years.
Care team is praised for long service
Anchor Hanover Group has announced the appointment of Sarah Jones as chief executive from August 1. It follows Jane Ashcroft’s decision to step down from the role at England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care for older people. Sarah is currently Anchor’s chief financial officer and has been a member of the Anchor Board since April 1, 2020. Jane has held senior roles at Anchor for more than 20 years, including 12 as chief executive. She was made a CBE in 2013 for services to older people and has undertaken sector roles including chair of Care England, founding director and vice chair of ARCO and vice chair of the National Housing Federation. Sarah said: “I am delighted to be taking up the baton from Jane and look forward to maintaining Anchor’s focus on providing more and better homes. I am eager to ensure the organisation continues to evolve to meet the needs and expectations of the older people of today and tomorrow and I also want to build on our influence in this socially vital debate with Government and other stakeholders.”
AN Ixworth care home has praised the loyalty and dedication of its team with 20 of its long-serving members clocking up 243 years of service between them. The Beeches has formed a 20-person strong care team since the home was opened in 1985. Deputy home manager Bev Shave, who has worked at the home for 16 years, said: “We are very proud of our amazing care team. We have such tremendously committed members of staff which is brilliant. “The stability of our staff team helps us to build trusted relationships and deliver a consistent level of care for our residents, who are very dear to us and at the heart of everything we do at our care home. “Having such a committed team means that we are able to provide the very best levels of care, come rain, shine or snow.” “Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the care sector has faced recruitment and retention challenges in caring roles. However, we’re proud to have a very friendly, professional and experienced team here who have worked together for a number of years, whilst being able to offer support and career opportunities to our colleagues that help to make us an employer of choice in the local area.” Some of the longest standing members of the team include Angela Wade, home manager – 26 years; Ruth Skelhorn, cook – 27 years and Wendy Ainsley, care worker – 22 years.

Celebration event honours group’s community carers A CELEBRATION and thank you evening has been held to honour the hard work and dedication of staff at a Yorkshire home care company. Carers and managers from the Harrogate, Ripon and Settle branches of Continued Care gathered together to let their hair down and celebrate their achievements throughout the unprecedented challenges of the last two years. The event also featured the presentation of long service awards, as well as announcing the carer of the year for each branch. Director Samantha Harrison said: “Working through Covid has been one of the hardest things we have experienced but through it all our staff have shown great determination and resilience, working together as a team and putting others before themselves. “Before the pandemic, their jobs were hard enough but our staff have been selfless and focused on doing their best for our clients who are among the most vulnerable in our community. Their kindness, compassion and generosity has been inspirational. We wanted to say thank you and tell each of them how amazing they are and how proud we are of them.” The Carer of the Year Award was voted for by people who use the service and their families as well as staff at Continued Care. It was presented to Sophie Philp for Harrogate, Janet Bettridge at Ripon and Michaela Sutcliffe in Settle. Samantha added: “Sophie, Janet and Michaela are outstanding carers and worthy winners of their awards. They are inspirational in the care they give,
Mary’s theatre visit wish comes true as well as being valued and respected by their colleagues.” Long service certificates and badges were presented to nearly half of Continued Care’s staff – 65 people out of 140 – who have been with the company for five years or more. Making the presentations, area manager Mike Herrington said it was amazing to have such a high proportion of long-serving staff in the company, given the well-known challenges within the care sector around employee retention. He added: “This is testament to the quality of our staff and what they do for us, as well as what we do for them, and how we all work together to make sure people get the best service we can give them.”
Residents enchanted by animal magic RESIDENTS at a Dorset care home cooed over a menagerie of weird and wonderful animals during a visit from Creature Teachers. Colten Care’s Amberwood House in Ferndown hosted a bearded dragon, a snake and even an African pygmy hedgehog called Peri Pickles. Rebecca Osborne, a member of the companionship team at Amberwood House, said: “The visit from Creature Teachers was a huge success. “Animal specialists Lisa and Jade introduced us firstly to Abraham the bearded dragon and Luna the albino corn snake – Luna apparently eats four mice every two weeks, which he swallows whole. “I wasn’t sure how many takers there would be to actually touch Luna, but most of our residents gradually felt brave enough and said they were surprised how soft his skin was.” Peri Prickles, the three-year-old African pygmy hedgehog, was a bit shy to start with, but gradually came out of his tight ball and delighted resident Pat Fisher with his cute face and twitchy pink nose. Perci the rabbit was also popular
Jeane Smith and Luna the albino corn snake. with most residents who were keen to have a stroke of his soft fur. Last, but certainly not least, was barn owl ‘Echo’. And willing residents were able to wear a special glove and watch as Echo flew towards them and perched on their hand.
MARY Western, a 90-year-old ex-carer originally from County Kerry in Ireland, now living in Somerset, was given a chance to revisit her roots after carers at Right at Home North Somerset came together to organise a trip to see the hit West End show ‘Seven Drunken Nights’. The show tells the story of Irish folk band The Dubliners, who Mary grew up dancing to with family as a child in the small Irish town of Tralee. When she moved to Clevedon in 1958 she would often listen to The Dubliners’ music to remind her of home. The show was on tour around the UK when it stopped at The Playhouse in Western-Super-Mare for one night only. The theatre is an important pillar of the community, and the management generously extended an invitation for Mary to join them as a VIP guest. The evening was arranged as part of Right at Home UK’s tin-full of wishes campaign, which encourages care givers to nominate homecare clients who deserve to have a special wish granted. Mary was nominated by her care giver at Right at Home North
Somerset, who was inspired by her story of having moved from Ireland to England to take on a role of a carer in a residential care home – where she spent the remainder of her working life dedicated to improving the lives of others. Grant Attwood, managing director of Right at Home North Somerset, said: “Each member of the team that regularly visits Mary loves spending time with her, and hearing her speak so passionately about her Irish heritage, so I am very proud that we could make her dream a reality. “Clients are at the heart of Right at Home so we will always go the extra mile for them, whenever we can. “I would like to thank The Playhouse for inviting us to their wonderful theatre in our local community – this really is a story of a community coming together to do something special.” Mary’s wish is the fourth to be granted as part of Right at Home’s 10-year anniversary campaign – nicknamed a ‘tin-full of wishes’ for the traditional anniversary gift – to celebrate a decade of making a difference to clients’ lives by awarding 10 wishes in 2022.
Children from a Bocking nursery were back visiting delighted elderly residents of a nearby care home after more than two years away. After the Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to visits, youngsters from Scallywags Nursery returned to The New Deanery to enjoy colouring pictures with residents and singing. The home’s activities manager Jo Whitehouse also arranged a special treat, introducing friendly Shih Tzu dogs Lilly and Lola, belonging to head of maintenance Mark Wadforth, to delight young and old alike. She said: “Our residents have really missed the chatter and smiling faces of the nursery children, who were regular visitors before the pandemic. It has been a tough two years and we were thrilled to welcome our young visitors back.”

Group launches jubilee gardening competition A SOUTH East care group has launched a royal-themed gardening competition to keep the jubilee celebrations going throughout the summer – and to encourage its residents to get outdoors and enjoy some meaningful, green-fingered fun. Nellsar, a family-run care group of 13 care homes throughout Kent, Surrey and Essex, has launched its ‘Right Royal Gardening Competition’ to encourage residents and their families across its homes to take advantage of the sunshine and create royal-inspired gardens. Residents, staff, family and friends are all encouraged to get involved in the three-month competition, which will be judged on the basis of creativity, collaboration and presentation. Viv Stead, recreation and well-being Manager at Nellsar, said: “What better occasion to bring staff, residents and their families together than with a royal-themed gardening competition to commemorate the longest-serving monarch in British history. “We’re all still buzzing from the recent jubilee celebrations and want to keep the party going throughout the summer, so we’re encouraging everyone across our homes to get out in the sunshine and create their jubilee-inspired gardens.” “We’ll be looking for how well the jubilee theme has been executed in each garden design, how well our staff teams have worked with residents and how well presented and eye-catching the gardens look.
It’s safe to say that this is an initiative we’ve been looking forward to and we can’t wait to see and share all the royal-themed gardens with everyone connected to the Nellsar family.” The winning homes are to be announced on Thursday, August 25, with cash prizes for their residents’ funds – £200, £100 and £50 for first, second and third place respectively. Whether participants choose to dress their gardens in Union Jacks, feature royal palaces or even the crown jewels, the purpose of the competition is to get outdoors and have some fun. Working in teams as they spruce up their gardens, it’s an opportunity to express their inner creativity and take pride in their work.
Intergenerational care village set to open in Chester THE opening date of the new Chester care village by Belong will be July 18. In a first for the not-for-profit organisation, the new facility will be home to a fully integrated children’s day nursery, creating extensive opportunities for intergenerational experiences. The £21million state-of-the-art development will offer a mix of independent living apartments and households where 24-hour support, including dementia and nursing care, is provided. Belong’s home care service, Belong at Home, will also operate from the site. All customers, as well as members of the public, will enjoy access to a village centre with a range of facilities including a bistro, specialist gym, hair salon, therapy room and entertainment venue with licensed bar. Belong chief executive, Martin Rix said: “The beauty of the village model is that we are able to offer a range of spaces and experiences, and give people the choice to join in as much or as little of village life as they choose. “This is crucial in ensuring residents continue to feel connected and
integrated within society, and we are particularly excited that Belong Chester will have this very special and new element for us, which is the integration of a children’s nursery.” The 25-place Nursery in Belong will provide a care and learning environment for children from birth to five years, six days a week. It will be operated by national charity Ready Generations, and village and nursery teams will work closely together to create a shared environment where children and older people can learn together and build an active, intentional and collaborative community that includes every generation. Bookable preview day events, including a tour of the village, presentation and refreshments will take place on July 5 and 8, beginning at 10am and 2pm on both days. Dropin days will also be held on July 16, 20, 25 and 30. As part of the organisation’s ongoing recruitment drive, career opportunities are available at the village, including qualified and trainee support worker roles. Catering, housekeeping and reception/ administration positions are also open for application.
Care home team completes 100km walk in three days THE Principle Care Homes team has raised more than £11,000 after completing a 100km walk in three days. Raising funds for their chosen charity, The Together Project, the team walked the equivalent of a marathon each day from their central office in Billericay to the site of the group’s first home in Fleet, Hampshire. The Together Project is a charity led initiative that boosts wellbeing,
reduces loneliness and fosters stronger, happier communities by creating joyful intergenerational experiences. Em Dean, chair of the charity committee, said “The event, whilst certainly a challenge, was a great opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, spend time with the team and exceed our target.” Having already raised £11,500, the team is aiming to hit its new target of £15,000 in the near future.
Care home managers at RMBI Care Co. have received a British Citizen Corporate Award in recognition of their leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, all 1,500 staff members at the charity have been awarded a British Citizen Award certificate of recognition for their ‘exceptional endeavours in the workplace community.’ Managing director Mark Lloyd said: “Our care homes, head office and national teams have worked tirelessly to ensure that our residents have received exceptional care and remained safe. I am delighted that our home managers have been personally recognised for their contribution, as they have demonstrated tremendous leadership and have all risen to the challenge and ensured their residents, their relatives and staff have been kept up to date with the ongoing unprecedented and changing situation.”

Chef Paul scoops catering award PARKHAVEN Trust chef Paul Dunne has won the prestigious Chef of the Year Award at the 2022 Care Home and Hospital Catering Awards. Judges had a difficult time whittling down the entries for this year’s awards, with nominations praising talented chefs and committed colleagues coming in from across the country. Paul said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won the award. The team and I work hard to provide a range of nutritious meals for our service users. “We regularly use special days such as birthdays and anniversaries, as well as themed days such as Pancake Day, fish and chip supper days and Halloween as an excuse to cook special themed meals and make mealtime extra special. “We love having these themed ‘party’ mealtimes and creating a family atmosphere, this all adds to our service users’ quality of life. We create a ‘buzz’ around mealtimes which helps encourage those with low appetites who need to eat more, to engage, join in and better enjoy their food. I find my work hugely rewarding. “Being honoured with this award is a great achievement which I’m taking on behalf of our amazing team at Parkhaven Trust.” Parkhaven Trust’s catering team not only plan, prepare and cook the meals for the residents and day centre clients, but they also personally assist service users at meal times.
Paul Dunne with his award. Many have dementia and require extra support at meal times to ensure their safety and well-being, and to ensure that they eat a nutritious meal in an enjoyable environment. Kim Crowe, chief executive at Parkhaven Trust, added: “I’m thrilled that Paul has been recognised at a national level for his amazing work. “Paul and the rest of the catering team work very hard to provide the very best wholesome, healthy foods for our service users. “This award reinforces what we already know here at Parkhaven – that the dedication of our staff is really what set us apart from the rest.” Parkhaven Trust work closely with local suppliers, they cook all meals from scratch on site, using only the freshest seasonal produce.
Charity launches drive to help people reconnect A NEW initiative aimed at helping people reconnect while raising money for a veterans’ charity has been launched. Brew for Two is encouraging people to invite a friend, family member or neighbour for a cuppa and catch-up, and has been launched by Royal Star and Garter. Sophie Fanning-Tichbourne, Royal Star and Garter’s partnerships manager, said: “We know that community and support networks are so important for our wellbeing and over the past two years we have not been socialising as much as we used to. “Now is the perfect time to invite a friend, family member or neighbour to join you for a cup of tea over a catch-up, while supporting the veterans in our care. “We want to help you celebrate small moments of connection and joy with someone you haven’t seen enough of with Brew for Two.”
Members of the public can send off for a Brew for Two pack for £5. They will receive two quality teabags, an invitation card to write, and a stamped envelope to make it easier to organise the get together. Once a Brew for Two pack has been received, participants can choose how best to put it to use – they could bake a cake to go with the tea, enjoy the hot drink with a board game, or make the most of the weather and have it as part of a picnic. Users can also post photos on social media using the hashtag #BrewForTwo Enjoying a cuppa and a chat is a popular pastime among Royal Star and Garter residents, and Brew for Two is inspired by the friendships and bonds that form in the homes over shared moments. The purchase of each pack will go towards helping Royal Star and Garter continue providing its award-winning person-centred care from its three homes.
Bluebird Care Alton, Bordon and Liphook has launched a recruitment drive after seeing a huge increase in demand for its home care services. The provider delivers care and support to customers throughout Alton, Bordon and Liphook, and hopes that increasing awareness of their continued expansion will encourage more people to join the sector. Managing director Norman Murphy said: “Unlike the uncertainty of some jobs, Bluebird Care can offer a secure, stable, and extremely rewarding career. Given the current cost-of-living crisis, this is vital to our team and thankfully our continued growth means we have vacancies for more people to join us.”
Revolutionising social care training with virtual reality ENHANCING health and social care training with virtual and augmented reality, White’s Training is looking to modernise the sector and make the training process as realistic as possible. Often, those who are starting a career in social care are unaware of the full extent of the job they are going to be doing – but with the help of White’s Training virtual reality courses, staff will be fully immersed into a learning environment that depicts a real-life scenario that they could be faced with. Staff retention and interaction rates have taken a decrease in the past couple of years, with Skills for Care highlighting that there was a 34.4 per cent care worker turnover in 2021. White’s Training has sourced an opportunity to modernise the training that is provided in the health and social care sector, and is one of the first social care training providers to offer virtual reality into its training process. The VR sessions are best delivered in person, however there is a type of virtual training that can be offered if necessary. Learners are provided with
a virtual reality headset and are submerged into an environment that will reflect those they will come across in their career. Enquiries: Call 01255 446655 or visit https://whites.training/virtual -reality-training/
Homes connect through the power of music RUNWOOD Homes’ Nottingham sites have come together to create their own resident choir. The homes involved include Braywood Gardens in Carlton, Jubilee Court in Hucknall and Leawood Manor in West Bridgford. Residents residing in each of these homes have been practicing every week, and recently they had the chance to sing together over Zoom. The songs that were picked and practiced for the first singalong included Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t help
falling in love’ and the old classic ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’. Customer relations manager Lydia Morris said: “The choir has so far been a great success. The residents have absolutely loved it. The last choir practice at Braywood Gardens resulted in lots of giggles. It is visible the positive impact that singing with others has for our residents.” Lydia was inspired to put the choir together after she went to visit Nottingham’s Dementia Choir, which was formed by actress Vicky McClure.
