he date is finally in the diary – we’ve been walking past the hoardings at 12 George Street in Wood Wharf for months, revelling in the anticipation of a comforting bowl of pasta and sauce.

So news that Emilia’s Crafted Pasta is officially launching its Canary Wharf restaurant on March 7 is a fresh serving of excitement.

Better still, from February 21 to March 6, the venue will be operating a soft launch with 50% off diners’ total bills, with some walkins available. We’re told competition for bookings is already hotting up, so those wanting to take advantage of the discount, while discovering the restaurant at the east of the estate, should move quickly.

Those already familiar with the company’s Aldgate and St Katherine Docks restaurants will have some idea what to expect – fresh pasta expertly paired with high quality sauces.

But the Wood Wharf venue is set to throw a few extra twists into the mix with table bocce (an Italian game similar to boules) and a dedicated bar menu.

So in addition to the

casarecce with pesto and the bechamel Bolognese with pappardelle in the main restaurant, a selection of olives, crisps, crudites and cured meats will be on hand to pair with drinks.

Signature cocktails (£9) include a Tuaca Espresso Martini, a Chinotto Spritz and a Raspberry And Bay Leaf Martini. A selection of Italian iced teas will also be available. What more could Wharfers want, overlooking the dock’s calm waters?

Artworks by multidisciplinary creator Wallace Chan are set to go on display this month.

A total of 10 works by the artist will be shown at an exhibition titled Titans: A Dialogue Between Materials, Space And Time.

Mr Chan, who is best known as a gem carver and jewellery designer, told Wharf Life he had first been inspired to make monumental sculptures after seeing works by the late Henry Moore.

One of his pieces – the fivemetre-tall Titans XIV – will join Moore’s Draped Seated Woman in Cabot Square for the duration of the show, which ends on April 8.

Working predominantly with iron and titanium, Mr Chan said he hoped his sculptures would inspire those who saw them.

He said: “If the audience wants to take something away from this exhibition, then I hope it will be the idea that we can always transcend as individuals.

“It is possible to pursue many different roads at the same time, and it’s always fine to go from one scale to another. I started carving 50 years ago and I’ve never stopped trying to expand.”

Well, as a restaurant that serves six course tasting menus, it means a half dozen dishes for diners priced at £37 for the lot. There are also matching wines for £33 plus snack, bread and cocktail options for an extra fee. so really it’s Seven By Nico plus bread?

Doesn’t scan as well does it?

OK. What’s the theme?

Well, according to the menu it’s all about tapping into your inner child – the cocktail’s Mary Poppins’ spoonful of sugar, there’s a lot of Roald Dahl, Cinderella, Paddington Bear, Hans Christian Andersen and weirdly Oliver Twist. what’s the best thing on the menu?

Definitely a certain duffle coatwearing protagonist’s marmalade, which turns out to be ox cheek ragu, mushrooms and XO orange preserve on sourdough toast. anything less successful?

The “whole baked tandoori carrot” was half a carrot.

a nice touch too, if you can make out the descriptions from the staff. so all in all an enjoyable evening?

On balance, yes – decent food, a few little surprises on the plate and some good wines. If you’re looking for a reasonable quantity of food, the snacks are a must. Great that the menu contains takeaway recipes for those inclined to the culinary arts. do say They all lived happily ever after

The restaurant chain is marking the Year Of The Tiger with a special cocktail and serving meat, glutenfree, vegan and vegetarian feasts developed with Dim Sum Master Ruby Wu. Trying some of the dishes on an evening at its St Katherine Docks branch proved pleasant. While the edible paper peeper on the Grey

Goose Tiger Eye Martini was a little gimmicky and gelatinous when consumed, the cocktail itself was bright and fresh, probably the sort of thing a big cat would imbibe after a sophisticated afternoon on the hunt.

It wasn’t long before our prey arrived - both veggie and animal and each costing £23.95.

First up came prawn crackers with the first in a succession of dips. Then a selection of deep-fried spring roll-style bites arrived – appropriately crisp and flavourful with more dips.

Then, before we were quite

done, it was the turn of the steamed rice and dumplings, resting in their bamboo vessels.

While each was an intriguing soft morsel, special mention should go to the vibrant orange Tiger Paw Vegan Dumplings.

Arguably the most successful of Ruby’s dishes, these packages of mushroom, bean curd and Chinese leaves beat everything else for moreishness, although the chicken and coriander potsticker came in a close second.

’m so excited to introduce myself as I take over writing this column from my predecessor Martin Gettings. My name is Sophie Goddard and I’m the new director of sustainability at Canary Wharf Group (CWG).

Having grown up in east London I’ve seen first-hand the transformation in this area. I’ve joined the organisation at a very exciting time for sustainability and hope to use my experience in the built environment to build on the great work that’s been happening at Canary Wharf for the past three decades.

Sustainability may often seem complex and confusing, which can make it difficult to understand or to know what to do. I am often asked questions such as: “What actually is net zero carbon?” and “How do we really prevent climate change?”.

At the same time, we are being presented with so many related messages. These might be through the targets organisations are setting out to reach net zero, the TV programmes and films we are watching or the advertisements we see that include sustainability.

Over the coming months I will be using this column as an opportunity to demystify some of the concepts we talk about in sustainability so we can all move forward and tackle the climate crisis together.

I’ll be updating you regularly about the initiatives CWG is working on, and hopefully answering some of your sustainability-based questions along the way.

With people at the heart of what we do, we have three main priority areas that CWG is focusing on for Canary Wharf.

First, we’re reducing emissions in line with our Science Based Targets and targeting net zero carbon across our operations on the Canary Wharf estate. To do that, we’re working together with our suppliers and our customers, taking a collaborative approach because we know we can’t do this alone. We will share more information on what this means and the actions we are taking in the next article.

Second, we want to continue the work we’ve been doing to enhance local biodiversity and the environ-

It also means keeping resources in circulation, reusing materials wherever possible and designing buildings to eliminate waste altogether. I’m very excited to be at Canary Wharf during such a crucial time and will use this as an opportunity to demystify this topic over the coming months.

he majority of people would be unlikely to name a trip to the dentist among their top places to relax. Bad experiences, popular culture, the whine of the drill and a certain level of oral discomfort all loom large in the mind.

That’s perhaps why one of the first words that comes out of Dr Minesh Talati’s mouth when we meet is “relaxation”. The founder of Malmin Dental places a clear emphasis on tackling the anxiety many patients feel through the company’s approach to treatment and its infrastructure.

Its latest branch – set to open in Canary Wharf on February 28 – will exemplify those principles.

Spread across a double-fronted unit on South Colonnade, Malmin’s build has seen two full-height floors created to accommodate an extensive range of facilities.

Visitors can expect crisp clean design with plenty of space to wait and work if necessary – the flagship of a dental group that has grown from a single practice to operate multiple locations across the UK. “My father was a pharmacist and he told me working in healthcare was a good profession – you’ve got a choice, medicine or dentistry, and I picked the latter,” said Dr Talati.

“I attended university in Liverpool and did my masters in Manchester and then, in 2006, I started a new multidisciplinary practice – one of the very few in London at the time – so we could offer everything from simple to advanced dentistry.

“The reason I started Malmin was that when you work for someone else you have limitations.

“Where I was working I could see things that needed to be improved in the quality of care I wanted to deliver to patients in terms of the surroundings, equipment and talent at the practice.

“So we created a fantastic team, lots of whom are still with me and continuing to progress in their careers – many are now professors in their own fields.” continued on Page 12

A

s a lover of gadgets, people often ask me to name my favourite.

Without hesitation I say my smartwatch (combined with noise cancelling earbuds).

On a typical weekend morning, my watch gently vibrates to wake me up. I rub my eyes as I glance at it to see how much sleep I’ve had and it lets me know about any important messages that have arrived overnight.

I put my running gear and headphones on, select some songs from the 50million available to stream and it tracks my run and heart rate in real-time, storing a measure of my fitness level.

I receive a text message while running, which is read out to me and to which I can respond using my voice. If I get lost on my run (this has been known to happen) it will help me find my way.

I finish my run and make a call home to get the breakfast order. I pay for breakfast, check real-time bus information to avoid waiting at the bus stop in the cold and pay for my journey. On board, I check emails and read the news.

All this time, my watch is constantly monitoring my blood oxygen level and checking for heart rate irregularities. If I have a fall, it will alert emergency services automatically, unless I confirm that I’m fine.

It can even take an ECG and send the results to a doctor. All this without my smartphone and in such a diminutive package. That’s why it’s my favourite gadget.

In future, we can expect to see sensors for temperature, blood pressure and even blood glucose in the mix. The latter would be a game changer.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, it also tells the time. A design and technological marvel. Chris wears an Apple Watch Series 7.

Hours is the minimum time the dough rests before being shaped into pizzas

I

t’s a classic bromance. Gregorio Carullo and Dario Truden grew up on opposite sides of the Tyrrhenian Sea in southern Italy. As growing boys, they feasted on pizza and, as men, embraced the sensual arts of nude photography and hairdressing. ate rought them together five years ago in London when, like so many residents of the capital, they found themselves thrown together as flatmates. They onded over their heritage and a shared passion for pizza, which quickly grew into a desire to share it with their new community.

There were ups and downs along the way but, two months ago, the story had its happy ending, when the duo opened Tondo Pizza in Wapping High Street.

The -seater restaurant serves up food that fuses traditional eopolitan flavours with modern sensibilities. I sat down with married father-of-one, Gregorio to find out more. how did the idea start?

Dario and lived together as flatmates for two years and, although we do totally different o s we always had the same passion for Italian food and the dream of opening a small restaurant.

The idea of Tondo started a long time ago when I had the opportunity to wor in the evening in a pi eria here in ondon and over six years, accumulated the experience and the desire necessary to start this new adventure.

what inspired you?

We are both from the south of Italy.

I was born and raised in Salerno and Dario in icily so having the need to make great pizza is in our veins. e oth grew up eating it and we wanted to recreate the flavours of our childhood in our own way. what were the challenges?

There were certainly enough di culties to carry out this pro ect starting with finding the right place and ma ing everything functional. owever everything was possible thanks to the support and commitment of Dario who immediately elieved in the potential of my idea. why open in Wapping?

For me it is the most beautiful neighbourhood in London.

It’s an island of quiet in the middle of the largest city in the country. loved it from the first moment I walked its streets back in when first moved to London.

I do only nude art. I have been pursuing this career for nine years and it is always a great satisfaction to have the honour of photographing strong and independent women.

They fight every day for their rights, putting themselves on the line, with a type of photography that is sometimes looked at from the wrong point of view by society.

how Periastra finds similarity in areas of art and astronomy

Curator’s Note by Paul Malone P e r i a s t r a was a hybrid art and astronomy exhibition that took place in early February. The theme of the show was to highlight how similar the pursuit of curiosity was in such dissimilar fields.

From previous exhibitions, I knew of several artists working in art-science. I had then to send out to science projects I thought might have a visual interest for the public. It proved difficult to convince established institutions of the intent of contemporary art.

However, many of the small scale

experimental projects were enthusiastic to take part. Several are looking for funding, so I do hope you will look them up via the links on these pages.

Experiment becomes discovery; and, with new paradigms, becomes new technologies. The way this exhibition evolved pointed towards a neo-Copernican revolution in modes of thought for which art can play an invaluable role.

P e r i a s t r a would love to travel to other venues, so please do get in touch if you have any ideas. There will be a post-exhibition catalogue produced.

elf Improvement is a lot like home improvement, it always costs twice as much and takes four times as long as you think it should.

There are many reasons for this – our habits have a certain inertia to them and changing them takes time and massive effort.

This can be made even harder when we lack self awareness. Now, you might be telling yourself: “I don’t lack self awareness”. But, according to organisational psychologist Dr Tasha Eurich, you’re probably a bit deluded. Don’t look at me like that, it’s her research. Apparently, although some 95% of people believe they are highly self aware, only between 10-15% of people actually have a good level of internal and external self awareness.

Internal self awareness is a person’s understanding of themselves – why they do things, their principles and motivations.

This might seem straightforward, but how many people really ask themselves why they did a stupid thing and actually take the time to figure out the Our habits have answer. I see this all the time in people who have a powerful inner critic. These people cast such a harsh eye on everything they see in themselves that they aren’t open to how others see them. A balanced knowledge of ourselves includes how we affect other people. You might be the hero of your own story, but then, every real villain is.

Knowledge of ourselves gives us the ability to act where others simply react and call their repeated mistakes fate.

xecutive support is what Liz Agostini is here to talk about. The portfolio director at Mash Media, which is set to host The PA Show at Excel in Royal Docks on March 8 and 9, is quick to point out that the event is a larger umbrella than its name might suggest.

“It’s for personal assistants, executive assistants, virtual assistants and o ce managers it has really broad appeal,” she said.

If anything, that’s a bit of an understatement. Spread over the two days, thousands of visitors will be able to attend dozens of seminar sessions, listen to dozens of speakers and interact with more than 100 exhibitors.

In addition to a theatre for keynote speeches the show will feature a Key Skills Theatre, a Personal Development Theatre and a Tech Theatre with a packed programme of trainers and industry experts. t will also host the ce Management Conference with discussions on topics such as pro ect managing o ce moves supporting a positive culture in the wor place and engaging staff in sustainability.

“The roles are so varied and strategic these people are partners for the executives they support.

“They often have to participate in all aspects of an organisation whether that s finance marketing, employment, corporate governance, human resources and sustainability issues. Their remit is absolutely massive. I spoke to one PA who answers 90% of her boss’ email as him. Her understanding of the business has to be as good as his.

“That’s why a lot of EAs and PAs move into critical roles within organisations ecause of their knowledge of the business they work for.

“I know PAs who have gone into underwriting, stockbroking and mergers and acquisitions.

“At the top level you need to know how the business works and that’s about a million miles away from the stereotype of

getting an executive’s clothes dry-cleaned for them.”

New for its 11th year is the colla oration with the ce Management Group, bringing the conference into the show’s stable.

“That’s an entirely new stream of content that we’re putting out,” said Liz. “It covers areas such as facilities and o ce management and what’s particularly relevant about that right now, is that so many businesses are focused on ringing their staff ac into the o ce doing that safely and establishing how they create the right o ce environment in and beyond. egardless of how many staff they have in the o ce in person businesses are conducting both internal and external meetings virtually, so what kind of facilities do you need to have in place? If people are working remotely, how do you keep everyone connected?

“That might cover questions around scheduling if people are wor ing more fle i ly for example, how do you make sure project teams are running e ciently if participants are only in on certain days?

“Because the whole subject of technology in business is so important we’ve introduced the Tech Theatre to The PA Show this year too and that’s focusing on a whole raft of tools that are now available, not just the Microsoft and Google toolkits.”

Liz said for businesses wanting to reach the spending power of executive support professionals, exhibiting at the show was a “no-brainer”.

She said: “Nothing beats the personal touch and the budgets people in these roles have access to are significant.

W

alk across the bridge over the River Lea from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to Stour Road and you enter the streets of Fish Island, where the walls wear their gra ti li e a adge of honour.

Follow the bright colours past an overflowing wheelie in and up Roach Road. There, on the cusp of the area’s regeneration you will find ule ero a ar on the ground floor of a new- uild residential development, its entrance opposite the MK Carlton Chimney, the last remnants of an old shoe factory.

Inside I am led to a table with access to a plug socket, as I’ve specified in my reservation that I’m here to “work”.

After making a big show of ordering a tap water and getting my laptop out, I place my phone on the table (hoping no-one actu-

ally calls) and order a Four Roses Old Fashioned because it sounds pretty. I don’t know Four Roses is a brand of bourbon.

At £14.95 it’s one of the most expensive cocktails on the menu.

When it arrives I’m just about to be disappointed at how little is in the glass for the price until I realise there are three small cubes of ice and the rest is basically alcohol.

I’m going to be drunk in two sips.

Goodbye productivity.

My next good decision is to order food. They say the toasted sandwiches are “perfect for sharing” which sounds weird until you order one and realise the slices of bread they use are massive.

Again, being a novice, I also order chips, which are in no way necessary.

The sandwich filled with goats cheese and butternut squash is warming flavourful and comes with a generous amount of the former.

The chips are the crispy ones where they have been triple or quadruple cooked and are so

well seasoned I eat them without needing to dip. I never do this.

For dessert I go liquid with a Toffee opcorn ld ashioned.

They infuse the popcorn in the bourbon at the bar, which is pretty inventive. It is £9.95 and tastes divine.

The maple syrup makes it extra smooth the toffee popcorn taste lingers over the warming burn of the spirit.

It is this warmth, and a very big coat, that enables me to sit outside for a short spell on the bar’s canalside terrace.

This must be one of the most coveted spots in summer. But in February there is no-one else here, just a lovely view of the canal boats gliding by and ducks swimming along the water. At this stage I realise I’m drunk.
