As the final notes faded and applause filled the Arts Centre, the annual Christmas Concert marked a spectacular ending to a bustling season of festive activities. This year’s event was nothing short of magical, featuring

over 200 pupils who came together alongside staff to celebrate the spirit of the season through music and performance.

Dear Readers A very warm welcome to our Autumn Term bulletin which reflects on a hugely successful term for Withington Girls’ School.

This term we have seen our school at its very best – energetic, purposeful, creative, compassionate. Through all of their endeavours, our pupils and staff have shown that there is little that cannot be achieved with great teamwork, commitment and ambition. Whether it be in the classroom, on trips, or in the many extra-curricular activities we offer here, we have seen a love of learning, care for others in our own community and beyond, and a simply awe-inspiring range of fantastic projects and events which show not just the breadth of talent but the aspiration and can-do attitude we nurture here at Withington. In their visit to WGS earlier this year, the Good Schools Guide called WGS a ‘remarkable school’ and that is something that we see in action here every day.

Back in September we welcomed all of our new pupils and their families to Withington and it has been such a pleasure to see our new pupils settle in and find their feet, encouraged by our skilled and caring staff and, crucially, by older pupils too. The legendary Year 7 trip to Ghyll Head, the team-building days, House events, and host of other clubs and societies all see pupils of all ages working together, supporting one another, guided and inspired by our dedicated and expert staff. You will find many examples in this bulletin of ways in which this very special Withington magic is evident across the school, empowering our pupils and, indeed, all in the Withington community to give of their...

...Head’s Lines, continued... ...best, to not be afraid of challenge, and to learn, grow, and make great things happen. A Withington education adds those significant extras, some of which can be measured and some which are more intangible, in all aspects of our pupils’ development.

This sense of opportunity, excitement, and ambition was very much in evidence when alumna, Sarah Burton, visited Withington earlier this term – showing us all the power of role models and lifting others up, of dedication, and of following your dreams. Our contact with and support from our alumnae community is a vital part of life at Withington and we look forward to welcoming into school many alumnae, along with current and former parents and other professionals, when we host our Futures Convention in January.

This term has brought a number of accolades for our school, not least the seventh consecutive award from the Sunday Times, this time for Northwest Independent Secondary School for Academic Excellence 2026. This followed news of our place in the top five schools nationally in the Girls’ School category of the Independent Schools of the Year awards, and our inclusion once again in the prestigious Tatler Schools Guide with a very favourable review. Those who know our school know that we are never complacent and, whilst we do not seek plaudits, I am very proud of all that our pupils, staff, parents and wider school community do that is reflected in this external recognition.

Our Autumn term is coming to a close uplifted by a simply fantastic programme of special events, many of them musical, and many focused on our care for others and the responsibility we all have towards those around us. Music really is the lifeblood of the Withington Christmas and across the whole school we have savoured the various spine-tingling, fun, moving and entertaining performances of WGS pupils, which have been made possible by our fabulous staff.

Congratulations to them all.

As ever, there is so much to look forward to in the new year as our journey continues together.

SENIOR CITIZENS’ TE

On Wednesday 3rd December, Withington students and staff welcomed around 150 local senior citizens for a festive concert and tea party filled with music, laughter and community spirit.

Guests filled the dining room, surrounded by music from both sides of the room - the orchestra poised to deliver festive tunes and singers lifting spirits. Highlights included a lively mix of seasonal music, a rendition by the WGS Rat Pack of Robbie Williams’ Angels and a beautiful rearrangement of For Good from Wicked by our Year 13 A Level Music students.

The first half closed with a spirited performance of The Twelve Days of Christmas – Withington style, complete with actions - before guests enjoyed delicious refreshments. The second act brought more rousing music and growing anticipation for the raffle prize draw. Several lucky winners took home amazing prizes, with all funds raised supporting The Booth Centre.

We are incredibly grateful to members of the Withington community for enabling us to provide such fantastic gifts to our guests.

One guest told how she’d bumped into a school acquaintance she hadn’t seen for 70 years.

Before the concert, guests enjoyed a warm welcome in the Hub, where they could purchase raffle tickets and hand-crafted cards from our Young Enterprise team. Mince pies and sherry added to the festive atmosphere, while guests and pupils shared stories and laughter across the generations.

On Monday 8th December, our school community came together for a joyful celebration at the historic St Ann’s Church in Manchester for the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols.

The service featured moving performances by the Chamber Choir and Staff Choir, whose harmonies filled the church with warmth and joy.

Interwoven with these musical moments were readings delivered by both staff and students, that offered thoughtful perspectives and moments for reflection.

The service was an uplifting reminder of the power of community and the spirit of the season.

Spreading Christmas joy in the community was the goal for the team of musicians who visited The Christie hospital on Thursday 11th December.

Their beautiful carols and festive tunes filled the foyer with warmth and holiday spirit, bringing smiles to patients, staff and visitors alike.

The heart-warming sound of hope echoed around Manchester’s spectacular Cathedral as children from six primary schools joined Withington Junior and Senior pupils for our sixth Manchester Sings partnership event.

In an uplifting one-hour concert more than 200 children came together to celebrate this year’s theme of Hope, captivating a delighted audience of family, friends and Manchester dignitaries with a medley of uplifting songs and a selection of wonderful poetry.

Under the guidance of our Director of Music, Mrs Gilly Sargent, the participants - some as young as seven - had been rehearsing tirelessly in their separate schools but this was the first time that they had come together as a single massed choir. And what a performance it was!

There were happy smiles all round – and even a few tears of pride, as some parents (and teachers) told afterwards how they had been so moved from the very first song, Cantar, they had sobbed with pride.

Songs and poems for this year’s festival had all been selected to tell a story of Hope, a theme chosen, said Mrs Sargent, ‘as a reminder that even in challenging times, we can look for the positive’ which can be found ‘through the joy of music and the sense of unity it brings’.

From an energetic Cantar opening, to the Beatles All You Need is Love finale, there was a celebratory upbeat tone to the afternoon event, which took place on Tuesday 25th November and included 22 WGS Juniors and 32 Seniors.

A melodic three-part harmony version of Pacem captured the essence of peace; the old classic My Favourite Things from the Sound of Music delighted the audience with its nod to nostalgia; Happy Talk and Smile were popular sing-alongs; and as a fitting finale to Manchester Sings 2025, the Beatles’ All You Need is Love. The concert also featured a heart-warming solo performance of Hope - based on the well-known Emily Dickinson poem - by Year 13 student Emily, who had originally composed the piece for her GCSE Music exam.

The poetry selection – written and read by Year 5 and 6 pupils from across the schools, including four Withington Year 5 girls - also reflected the day’s theme, with the words of each of the poems inspired by the chosen songs.

Since our inaugural concert six years ago, approximately 1,500 junior school pupils have experienced the joy of singing in a massed choir at the iconic venue of Manchester Cathedral.

Emily in Year 13 who composed and performed the solo in Hope, with words taken from the Emily Dickinson poem, said: “ I’ve been taking part in Manchester Sings every year since I was in Year 8, so in my final year of Withington, I believed I was well versed in

what to expect from the event. Yet every year, I am again struck by the immensely powerful experience of singing with a large choir in Manchester Cathedral. I was honoured that Mrs Sargent chose to include my original composition, within the programme of music, and that I could perform the solo for this piece.

After the concert, I was lucky enough to speak to some of the younger singers and their parents. It was especially meaningful to hear how a number of the children have been inspired to join choirs outside of school, and hopefully will carry a love of singing and music forward into their lives.”

SEVENTH SUNDAY TIMES AWARD IN A ROW FOR WGS Withington was awarded the title of Northwest Independent School of the Year for Academic Excellence in the Sunday Times Parent Power Guide. This award marked a seventh consecutive accolade from The Sunday Times including being named North West Independent Secondary School of the Decade for 2021.

The award is based on pupils’ academic performance in this year’s GCSE and A Level examinations, in which Withington’s A Level students achieved over 2-in-5 grades at A* (41.2%) and 3-in-4 grades (75.4%) at A*-A, while 58.1% of all GCSE grades were achieved at grade 9 and 82.2% at grade 8 or 9.

The Guide’s ranking of top performing secondary schools in the 2025 public examinations positions Withington 39th across all schools in the UK, both state and independent, and top in the North West. We are ranked 35th of all independent schools in the UK.

Sixth Form students joined peers from The Manchester Grammar School and Manchester High School for Girls for an inspiring discussion of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel, Tess of the D’Urbervilles.

Together, they explored its themes of fate, morality and resilience, bringing fresh perspectives to a timeless text.

HIDDEN GEMS:

A NIGHT FOR THE GAMBIA On Tuesday 11th November, the Withington community and guests gathered at Manchester Cathedral for an unforgettable evening of music - a charity concert, Hidden Gems: A Night for The Gambia, dedicated to supporting the children and development of Mama Tamba Nursery school in The Gambia. Organised and hosted by the WithGambia team 2025, and powered by the enthusiasm of students, staff, families and guests, it became a truly memorable evening.

From the moment attendees began arriving, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The WithGambia team worked diligently to prepare the slideshow, lighting, programmes and raffle hampers, and it was wonderful to see the audience buzzing with excitement and anticipation as they settled in for the performances.

The concert featured a rich and varied selection of music, taking the audience on a chronological musical journey from 1883 to 2024 and showcasing lesser-known pieces deserving the spotlight. Ranging from solos to duets, instruments to voice, a cappella choirs to a rock band, there were 26 performers and 19 acts on the night. Each one demonstrated dedication and creativity, and the audience applauded the phenomenal talents of these musicians.

In addition to the students from Withington, there were performers from Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Loreto College, Loreto Grammar School, The Manchester Grammar School and Sale Grammar School, making the event a true collaboration of local schools.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees and sponsorship from Withington Medical Practice, the evening raised an impressive £2,392.

We look forward to using the money raised this year to continue supporting the Mama Tamba Nursery School, the Illiassa Maternity Health Centre and youth enterprises in The Gambia.

MANCHESTER HARPATHON

It was a joy to be part of the first-ever Manchester Harpathon, held at the World Irish Centre on Sunday 5th October.

The event was part of the wider Manchester Harp Festival, founded by our Teacher of Harp, Louise Thomson.

Twenty pupils from Withington’s Junior and Senior Schools performed beautifully as part of a packed programme, which also featured children from other schools and professional harpists from across the UK and Ireland.

Among the guest performers were AnneMarie O’Farrell, Professor of Harp at the Royal Northern College of Music.

The visit was a fantastic opportunity for students to meet face-to-face after months of correspondence, sharing stories, practising language skills and learning more about each other’s lives.

The visit concluded with a delicious afternoon tea – a fitting way to round off a memorable experience.

BRONZE Year 7

Our creative Junior School students have produced a range of artworks in response to the theme ‘Funky Food’ during their Arts Award Discover sessions. This term, they have beautifully decorated ice-cream cone money boxes using a variety of acrylic paint pens. The girls have also completed lovely drawings in charcoal depicting arrangements of fruit. They have learnt about artists Patrick Caulfield and Andy Warhol, and they have made colourful collages and drawings inspired by the work of these famous artists. At the end of every Arts Award course, pupils are encouraged to share their portfolios with each other and to gather feedback about their project work. Our students have collected lots of positive comments from their peers in their books. We are now looking forward to starting the new Arts Award Explore course in the New Year, when we will cover a different set of art techniques and ideas.

We have had a brilliant first term during our Arts Award Bronze course. Our young artists are full of enthusiasm and are very keen to complete work to a high standard. The girls began the term researching contemporary embroidery ideas alongside developing their understanding of traditional embroidery techniques. Our students spent time designing their own textile artworks in their unique sketchbooks before choosing one idea to take forward. Everyone enjoyed applying colourful and metallic paint pens directly onto calico fabric before adding further detail with careful stitches. The hand-sewn artworks are stretched across classic wooden embroidery hoops and will look superb displayed together on the wall. We are now venturing into an artist research project, and pupils have begun to prepare background pages in their portfolios using watercolours and collage. In the New Year, we will continue with this unit of the course, and everyone will also benefit from an excursion to a local gallery.

SILVER Years 8 & 9 This term we launched an exciting project focused on leadership skills. Students enrolled on the Arts Award Silver programme considered the qualities of a good leader, before thinking about the skills that they wished to develop personally.

They then set to work devising their own creative workshop, thinking about how delivering an art or craft activity to their peers would enable them to improve skills such as public speaking, communication and time management.

Throughout November and December, our young artists have taken it in turn to teach their own mini art lessons to small groups. It has been wonderful to see such a variety of work being produced: cream-glue hair accessories, shading pencil studies of 3D objects, watercolour flowers and jellyfish keyrings. The outcomes have been fantastic. In the New Year, we will evaluate the project and then move on to researching careers in the creative industries and organising a trip to a local art gallery.

HARP RECITAL

In more harp news from this term, Millie in Year 9 gave a captivating recital, performing the pieces she selected for her LTCL Diploma performance. For those unfamiliar with the LTCL (Licentiate of Trinity College London), it is equivalent in standard to the final year recital of a university music degree.

Millie is a keen and committed member of Withington’s musical life, actively involved in the Senior Orchestra, Harp Ensemble and Folk Club. She is also a member of Tech Club, who support school productions behind the scenes with lighting, sound and technical setup.

Millie, who also plays piano, is a member of both the Junior RNCM and the Hallé Youth Orchestra.

Her achievement marks just the second time a Withington student has taken the LTCL Diploma. Earlier this year, Dorothy, now studying Medicine at university, became the first to complete this prestigious qualification.

EXPLORING ROMAN BRITAIN

Pupils in Years 8 and 9 stepped back in time during a memorable trip to the historic city of Bath, where they had the chance to walk in the footsteps of the Romans and explore the enduring legacy of Roman Britain.

Highlights of the visit included exploring ancient ruins such as the iconic Roman Baths and handling real artefacts, offering a hands-on glimpse into the city’s fascinating past. The trip brought history to life and gave students a deeper appreciation of Roman culture and its lasting influence.

BIOLOGY SPELLING BEE

Back by popular demand - The Royal Society of Biology’s School Spelling Bee returned this term, with pupils from all year groups in the Senior School taking part in the national competition.

The challenge began with a written spelling round, followed by a verbal round for the top performers. The highest scorers from each year group were submitted to The RSB for consideration.

Elizabeth in Year 11 was recognised as the top performer nationally for her year group - an incredible achievement.

Remarkably, this is the second time Elizabeth has been named national champion for her age category.

FIELDWORK IN A Our Year 11 GCSE Geography students recently spent three action-packed days bringing their classroom learning to life through hands-on fieldwork.

From investigating river processes in the Cumbrian countryside to exploring urban regeneration in Morecambe, pupils had the chance to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. They developed essential fieldwork skills and gathered valuable data to support their studies.

It was a fantastic experience that combined learning, teamwork and adventure, helping students deepen their understanding of both physical and human geography.

In November, we launched our exciting new partnership with Bare Necessities Toiletry Bank. Together, we’re raising awareness about hygiene poverty and promoting period positivity.

Our Head Girl Team spoke thoughtfully about the importance of access to period products and the need to break down stigma around periods and hygiene. The Bare Necessities team shared powerful insights into hygiene poverty - who it affects and why it matters.

Over the course of the second half term, we collected hygiene products for this partnership as we look to create sanitary packs for distribution within our school community and with Bare Necessities’ wider network.

FASHION IN We were honoured to welcome acclaimed fashion designer and alumna Sarah Burton OBE to Withington.

Sarah is Creative Director at Givenchy, after leading Alexander McQueen in that role for 13 years, and is perhaps most widely known as the designer of HRH The Princess of Wales’s wedding dress in 2011.

During her visit, Sarah spent time with both Junior and Senior School pupils, sharing fascinating insights into her school days and the fashion industry. Our Art and DT students had a unique

opportunity to experience her creative process as Sarah had kindly brought some sketchbooks and original drawings. They also looked through images of her designs, including the Givenchy Spring/Summer 2026 collection, which debuted at Paris Fashion Week just one week earlier.

Sarah’s closing words to our pupils were ‘Don’t worry!’ and ‘Stay true to yourself.’

We are incredibly grateful to Sarah for her time and generosity, and the inspiration she has provided to our pupils.

MEET OUR HEAD TARA

Head Girl Tara is completing A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and last year also completed an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Tara is now looking to study Economics and Management after initially thinking Medicine was the path for her.

In addition to her role as Head Girl, Tara is the co-leader of the Dharmic Assembly and a Year 7 Wellbeing Ambassador. In Year 12, she also took part in the Young Science Communicators programme and was a key member of the organising committee for the Dance Competition. Having been in the Junior School herself, Tara enjoys helping with Junior netball and rounders clubs, and throughout her time at Withington, has played in goal for the school hockey team.

Outside of school, Tara plays piano, volunteers at a care home and plays tennis. Last summer, she held a short-term role with the Children’s Cancer Research Fund.

A keen runner, Tara completed her first half marathon last year, with plans to take part in an official race soon.

Amy joined Withington in Year 12 to study Biology, English Literature, History and Politics, and plans to study English Literature at university.

As a new student, Amy quickly immersed herself in the wide range of academic and extra-curricular opportunities available in the Sixth Form. Her involvement has included university-led biology competitions, academic sessions in classics, political talks delivered

by Members of Parliament and inter-school historical debate competitions. She also played a key role in her Young Enterprise team, where she contributed to the development and sale of a children’s book. A Year 5 joiner, Olivia is currently studying A Levels in English Literature, Classical Civilisation, Mathematics, and in Year 12, completed an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). She plans to pursue a degree in English Literature at university.

Throughout her time at Withington, Olivia has pursued a wide range of extra-curricular interests across both STEM and the humanities.

She has served as a reading and library ambassador, mentored younger pupils, and participated in STEM Club. In Sixth Form, she is a member of the PhilSocrates committee, delivered a science show to local primary school children through the Young Science Communicators programme and was a House Prefect. Olivia has achieved a Distinction in Grade 8 LAMDA, was part of the Gambia Team in 2024 and is working towards her Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Outside of school, Olivia trains in ballet, tap and modern theatre dance, and volunteers at Jigsaw, a local support service.

Rosie joined Withington in Year 10 and at A Level, is now studying Drama, History and Politics. After Sixth Form, Rosie plans to take a gap year before studying History and Politics at university.

Beyond academics, Rosie is deeply involved in Music and Drama. She takes singing lessons outside of school and is a dedicated member of the choir, performing at events such as St Ann’s and the Senior Citizens’ Tea Party. Rosie has performed in both Sister Act and Legally Blonde JR. Rosie stepped into the role as a Barrister in last year’s Mock Trial competition.

Rosie recently played in a charity hockey match against Manchester High School for Girls and The Manchester Grammar School, and also delivered an assembly on perspective and reflections.

BIOLOGY IN THE In September, our Year 13 A Level Biology students took their learning into the great outdoors. Exploring coastlines, woodlands and mountains, they carried out practical work in ecology and environmental science and developed their skills in data collection, analysis and scientific observation. It was a hands-on and highly enjoyable experience for everyone!

THE GAMBIA 2025

At the time of publication, The Gambia team has just returned from visiting our partnership projects and experiencing the vibrant culture of this small West African nation. After more than 20 years of connection, our school community continues to benefit greatly from this relationship, through shared learning, cultural exchange, and the friendships that have grown over time.

This year’s visit was filled with inspiring moments, from meeting local students to seeing the progress of community initiatives. We look forward to sharing more stories and reflections from the trip in our next issue.

MOCK TRIAL

The Mock Trial team had a super successful time at the annual Paul Dockery Mock Trial Competition, winning both the overall competition and the Court Reporter Competition, which runs alongside the event and is judged by the Manchester Evening News.

The Withington team beat 11 other schools to take these titles and is now the most successful school in the 24 year history of this competition. For the first time ever, we entered two Withington teams since the enthusiasm for the competition from the Year 12 cohort was so high. The pupils put hours of hard work into preparing for the day.

Withington ‘Team Ad’ won their league and went into the final against Loreto College. Withington’s ‘Team Lucem’, also won all of their trials but narrowly missed out on the final. The victory is really down to the whole team, who have prepared and rehearsed together for weeks.

DUKE OF EDINB

At the start of every academic year, there is a flurry of activity and enthusiasm as we ask pupils to enrol on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme at either Bronze (Year 9), Silver (Year 10) or Gold (Year 12).

This scheme is always very popular and this year almost 90% of Year 9 have enrolled and are now ready to start their volunteering, physical and skill activities. At Silver level, 56% of Year 10 have enrolled in the award and 48% of Year 11 are continuing their activities, whilst a staggering 75% of Year 12 have committed to complete the Gold level.

The scheme requires young people to commit to one hour in each section per week, across a series of weeks, totalling three, six or 12 months, depending on the level. Through these activities they build essential skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and resilience. It boosts confidence and enables them to develop new talents. We hope that our pupils have fun, make new friends and foster new connections within their communities.

The most well know part of the scheme is the expedition. In the Autumn term, we had two expeditions go out: the Silver qualifying expedition for the Year 11 and the Gold practice for Year 12.

The title of this year’s annual Art Exhibition reflects the transformative journey our pupils have taken, beginning with a strong grasp of the fundamentals at GCSE and evolving into highly personal, often conceptual work at A Level.

Design is a subject rooted in preparation, transition and development of ideas, materials, techniques and outcomes. It celebrates individuality and creativity, which was beautifully expressed in the exhibition.

Over the past two academic years, our artists have explored exciting themes and developed their skills across disciplines, showcasing independence of thought and determination.

RETURN TO THE DIONYSIA

A CELEBRATION OF GREEK THEATRE This term, we launched an exciting new event that will bring the spirit of Ancient Greece to life in school. Return to the Dionysia: A Celebration of Greek Theatre will take place on Wednesday 11th February 2026, as part of Feel Fab Feb. The evening is a collaboration between the Drama, Classics, and Music Departments, and has been designed to celebrate the origins of theatre and showcase the talents of students across all year groups.

The Greeks were the pioneers of theatre, with Thespis remembered as the first actor, giving us the word Thespian. To honour this heritage, the headline performance will be an adaptation of Aristophanes’ famous comedy The Frogs, alongside extracts from other Greek plays and myths. The event will combine storytelling, music and dance, while also sharing fascinating insights into Greek culture.

The launch assembly sparked huge interest, with more than 90 students auditioning to take part. Rehearsals are now underway, and pupils are preparing to bring ancient characters and stories to life on stage. Parents, families and friends are warmly invited to join us on the evening, which promises to be both educational and entertaining - a true celebration of theatre, history and creativity.

FUNDRAISING It has certainly been a busy term in school and there has been a flurry of activity in the recent weeks leading up to the Christmas period.

There has been Christmas music filling the air, Christmas fairs, Christmas jumpers and a visit from Santa. As I write this article my office is filled with the chimes of Deck the Halls - the seasonal school bell.

The term began with a whole school fundraising activity, raising £1,200 for children with genetic conditions on Jeans for Genes Day. Wellbeing Week was another whole school activity, with Sixth Form students hosting tea and talk sessions and an own clothes day that encouraged our community to ‘wear your wellbeing’, which raised over £550.

Staff have enjoyed three different coffee mornings, scattered throughout the term, supporting Macmillan Cancer Support and so far, have raised over £400 with more planned throughout the year.

As a school, we like to donate to local charities and the community around us. Throughout the term, we make weekly food donations to the Fallowfield and Withington Food Bank and our annual Harvest collection meant we could support The Booth Centre with food donations to help and support the homeless across Manchester. This year saw very generous donations as always, so a huge thank you to everyone for your kindness.

Manchester Sings also raised just over £570 for The Booth Centre and another local charity which supports children and families on low incomes, Wood Street Mission.

Looking further afield, The Gambia team have worked very hard to raise money to support our ongoing partnership projects with the Mama Tamba Nursery School. They organised two fantastic events this term, a concert at Manchester Cathedral and the staff Lip Sync battle. The two events raised almost £3,400, which will go to help support the Nursery School with the curriculum this year.

In the lead up to Christmas, WGS has been busy with various activities over the past few weeks.

Friday 12th December marked our lovely tradition of Christmas jumper day, with the money raised for Save the Children totaling just over £800. Year 13 have been putting our brains to the test with their Christmas family quiz raising money for Cheshire East Hospice and The Christie. Year 11 have been selling candy canes with Christmas messages to send as small Christmas gifts and a WGS Christmas market was set up in the Hub, which featured singing staff, cookie decorating and a hot chocolate stall.

The Senior Citizens’ Tea Party is always a highlight of the year. Our guests had a wonderful evening and all went home with a gift. The event also generated £500 through raffle tickets sales for The Booth Centre once again. Thanks to the generous donations by members of our community, we were able to provide fantastic prizes to our guests and raise such a substantial amount of money.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed all the gifts, time and money donations to support this term’s activities. Our current total is £10,068 - an excellent start to the year.

MOCK INTERVIEWS

In November, Year 13 students took part in mock Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI) to prepare for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary applications. We were pleased to welcome nine clinicians who shared their expertise through the MMIs and oneto-one interviews with feedback. Plus, our own staff also played an invaluable role in assessing the skills of our applicants.

Withington students are once again being offered a fantastic opportunity to collaborate on stage with The Manchester Grammar School in their production of West Side Story, which will take place in October 2026. Following the success of Les Misérables last year, in which several Withington pupils from Year 4 to Year 13 shone on stage, this new project promises to be just as exciting.

The opportunity is open to Year 9 to Year 12 students who are interested in singing, dancing or acting roles. To help prepare, a special dance workshop exclusively for Withington Girls’ School students will be held at MGS ahead of auditions. Further details about audition preparation will be shared after Christmas.

The adventure began at Legends Backpackers Hostel, where the team eased into local life with cultural tours and communal games.

“We familiarised ourselves with the local community, by going on a cultural tour. We did our shopping and then spent our evening playing games around the communal table,” recalls Lydia.

Beyond the hard labour, there were moments of joy: dipping feet in a waterfall, learning basket weaving and sharing a traditional meal cooked by local women. “We even visited the homestead of one of the late King’s mothers,” recalls Aarya.

“It was interesting to see traditional living and the children performed rhymes, dances to songs and the 10 commandments which they seemed to know very well.”

A Sunday church service turned into an impromptu performance of Stand by Me - a moment the group will never forget.

WORLD CHALLEN THE TREK: TRIALS AND TRIUMPHS

Next came the trek - a test of endurance and teamwork. Day one meant climbing a mountain in 30°C heat, only to discover worms in the rainwater tank at camp. “We found worms swimming around in everyone’s bottle,” laughs Amirah. “We had to use Mrs Toubanks’ sock as a filter. Not the best moment of the trip, but better than drinking worms!”

Day two brought cooler weather, stunning views, and even a cave exploration. “The second day of the trek was longer, but it was easier because the weather completely changed. It was cooler, and it even started raining, which felt really refreshing after the heat the day before. By nightfall, a simple meal of Maggi noodles was so satisfying,” says Safina. “The local guides told us a little bit about life in Eswatini – including how people are afraid of thunderstorms.”

LESSONS FOR LIFE

The World Challenge expedition was certainly not a holiday. It was a masterclass in resilience, leadership and cultural appreciation. “Travelling as a team but also taking on responsibility was a great introduction to travelling independently,” reflects Eden. “The project work was really worthwhile, and we’re pleased to feel we have made a difference in the community where we spent time. The trip was an unforgettable experience for all of us, and we would all highly recommend it and do it again if we could!”

DRAMATIC OUTING LOST ATOMS

On Wednesday 12th November, a group of 28 Drama students in Year 10 to Year 13 went to see Frantic Assembly’s production of Lost Atoms. The production is an exploration of the life-changing relationship between the two characters, Jess (played by Hannah Sinclair Robinson) and Robbie (played by Joe Layton), and their recollection of it. Together, they experience soaring highs and crushing lows, relive the beats of connection, and the moments of loss.

The central themes of the play were memory and love, with the director of the play, Anna Jordan, highlighting how ‘our interactions with people, especially our intimate relationships, shape us into the people we are, whether that is through trauma or inspiration.’ The play aimed to question if memories of relationships are always solid, if relationships are always what we thought they were, and if we are who we always thought we were.

The cast, aided by amazing lighting and sound design, achieved magnificent success in showing how who we think we are can potentially reshape our memories and how the process of remembering alters that memory each time. However close we may feel to someone, we can never inhabit exactly the same space which is enough for people to see things fundamentally differently.

The play is aptly named Lost Atoms, as atoms cannot be lost, but they can appear to be lost if an experiment contains an error - this draws similarities to the act of remembering, with the event that happened being certain, but the act of remembering being fallible. As a group, we enjoyed the way Jess and Robbie presented their different feelings about this. For Robbie, the idea of things fading or being lost terrifies him and Jess comes to see it is as natural and liberating.

The set for this play was also incredible, as Frantic Assembly’s sets always are, with a backdrop of an imposing wall of filing cabinet drawers which both actors effortlessly clambered across - essentially rifling through the various files they’ve each mentally stored. Overall, this play was humorous, yet emotional, exploring aspects of memory and love that we often overlook, and watching the relationship between Robbie and Jess being slowly rounded out and then deflated was undoubtably moving.

On a cold and rainy Wednesday evening in mid-November, 19 Year 10 GCSE Drama students gathered at The Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays to watch Willy Russell’s iconic musical Blood Brothers.

For our Drama students, the evening was more than just entertainment. As part of Section B of the Component 1 AQA Drama GCSE course, they are required to explore Blood Brothers from the perspectives of designer, performer and director. Watching the play brought the text to life in vivid detail, offering invaluable insight into staging, characterisation and creative interpretation.

On Monday and Tuesday of the final week of term, WGS was lucky to have a visit from Santa and his very helpful elves.

In our very first Grotto at the school, Santa handed out gifts to all his visitors while his elves did various arts and craft activities with them.

NETBALL

All teams have played in the Sisters n Sport competitions with the U12s making it to the cup final for the North to be played in January. The U16s and U18s both reached the fourth round of the cup, and the U13s are into round four of the Plate which they will play in January.

Both the U13 and U15 sides continue in the Independent Schools Netball Cup and are preparing for their semifinal and quarter-final fixtures respectively, which will be played next term.

The U12B team are unbeaten so far in the Manchester Schools League and have put in some great performances.

LACROSSE

It’s been a positive start to the season for lacrosse with the U18s finishing in the top 4 at the Challenge Cup in November. This was the first time in Withington’s history that a team competed in this tournament, following their excellent performance at the England Lacrosse National Schools Competition last March. The team now continue to build towards performing once again at this tournament.

Amongst the other teams, good attendance at practice has been rewarded with successful, competitive friendly matches. Special mention to the U13s who are currently unbeaten! All age groups now build towards their North Schools tournaments next term.

It’s been a busy and exciting season so far, with teams across the school competing in multiple cups, including the Greater Manchester Schools and Manchester Schools competitions.

Our U13s and U14s are through to the quarter-finals of the Manchester Schools Cup. The U16s were handed a tough second-round draw against current cup holders Marple.

Despite the challenge, they delivered a highly competitive performance, narrowly losing out by just a couple of goals.

Across school, we are also competing well in the Manchester 7-a-side leagues for both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, with squads showing great teamwork and determination.

CROSS COUNTRY

Withington entered the prestigious English Schools Cross Country Cup for the first time this year. At the county round, the Year 9/10 team ran well in a very tough field, with Rose Codling finishing an impressive 13th in a field of over 50 runners. The Year 7/8 team ran brilliantly and qualified for the regional round held at the very hilly Sedbergh School, following their superb result of fifth of 15 schools!

Since the introduction of timetabled PE for Sixth Form students in September, a wide range of activities has been on offer. Students have enjoyed rock climbing, padel tennis, wellbeing walks in local parks, and boxercise sessions in the fitness suite. New skills have also been honed in ultimate frisbee and disc golf, making this term an exciting one for sport!

WELLBEING

Withington marked World Mental Health Day on Friday 10th October with a vibrant and uplifting Wellbeing Week, filled with activities designed to help pupils relax, connect and reflect.

Throughout the week, the Wellbeing Hub hosted a variety of lunchtime sessions, including bracelet-making, games and a lively open mic featuring ‘happy songs.’ Pupils also enjoyed Tea & Talk during morning break, and the school’s Wellbeing Ambassadors led thoughtful discussions in form time.

A highlight of the week was Green Club’s positive affirmation badges, which were so popular they continued into the following week. The badge designs were created or selected by club members, who hand-pressed them using existing materials, with funds going to Young Minds. The week concluded with a colourful non-uniform

day. Senior pupils were encouraged to ‘wear their wellbeing’, while in the Juniors, they wore yellow – the campaign colour for Young Minds.

Importantly, Wellbeing Week itself was organised by our Year 13 Mental Health Coordinator and the Wellbeing Ambassadors, showcasing the leadership, creativity and compassion of our students. Their involvement ensured the week was shaped by student voices and needs, making each activity meaningful and inclusive.

Beyond Wellbeing Week, pupil wellbeing is central to all we do at Withington. Throughout the year, a wide range of initiatives support students’ mental, emotional and social wellbeing. At the start of the school year, dedicated team building days take place for those in Years 8, 9 and 12 – and Year 7 benefit from a number of specific induction activities,

Year 13 students recently took part in an engaging and informative workshop designed to support their preparation for Oxbridge interviews.

Led by Class of 2017 alumna, Sitara Bartle Davies, the session offered practical advice on the interview process and introduced students to the types of questions they might encounter.

The workshop also emphasised the importance of authenticity and encouraged students to express genuine enthusiasm for their chosen subjects.

Sessions like this form a valuable part of Withington’s wider support for university applications, helping students to approach interviews with confidence and clarity.

The annual WGS PTA Ball was held at The Midland Hotel in Manchester on Saturday 22nd November. Bringing together staff and parents, it was a fantastic evening with plenty of music, dancing and fun.

This year, in addition to a quiz, entertainment included a fabulous magician during dinner. A definite highlight of the evening was the brilliant performance by our talented school staff band, ‘The Rat Pack’.

We would like to thank all the parents and local businesses who generously donated prizes for the raffle.
