What lessons has winter guard taught you?

I send greetings to those gathered for the 2005 Winter Guard International Color Guard World Championships and Percussion World Championships.

For more than a quarter century, Winter Guard International has brought young people from around the world together to showcase their talents and foster goodwill. The Championships advance arts appreciation and education and help teach competitors the importance of teamwork and discipline.

I congratulate performers for working hard to reach this level of competition, and I encourage you to continue to share your gifts. I also commend your families, teachers, and coaches for their guidance and support. You efforts strengthen the creative spirit of our Nation.

Welcome April 7, 2005 Greetings to everyone gathered in Dayton for the 2005 WGI World Championships.

Dayton is home for WGI and while it is always good to experience another host city, nothing is more welcome than Dayton opening its arms to embrace us once again.

For the first time in our history, WGI will hold two separate championships for two of most unique forms of pageantry. All contests you will view this weekend will either be in arenas or convention center facilities to provide even units competing at the entry level the best possible “championship” experience. While change is always hard, the membership has risen to the challenge and this event will be the largest in our history with almost 12,000 performers.

This year has seen a surge in the number of independent units competing at the highest level: World Class. The road these units take is not an easy one. Unlike scholastic units, there is no established support system and often times these units succeed solely on the passion of the director and staff who receive their motivation from their performers. WGI is committed in creating an environment for these units to grow and thrive and it is my fervent hope that this trend will long continue.

A big “thank you” to all our sponsors who have made WGI the progressive organization it is today. We honor their commitment to today’s youth and to winter pageantry. Without this support, color guard and indoor percussion would not be growing at the astounding rate it has been in recent years.

As you read this, the end of the 2005 WGI season is but a few short hours away.

Thousands of hours of dedication will culminate in a brief moment under the lights.

We should all appreciate this fine display of athleticism and artistry with resounding applause. I can assure you it will be a moment that these performers will never forget.

This weekend will be filled with many exciting performances by a variety of performing groups representing countries from all over the world. This international representation truly reflects the tremendous growth WGI has experienced in recent years.

The 2005 Winter Guard International World Championships are being held on two consecutive weekends for the first time in our history. How exciting for the spectators to have the opportunity to be a part of both Color Guard and Percussion events!

Welcome

Over its 28-year history, Winter Guard International World Championships have been held in nine different cities, each with its own unique style and personality.

From the chilly climates of Cape Cod, Chicago and Buffalo, where we trudged through snow and ice to get to warm-ups, to the sundrenched landscapes of Phoenix and San Diego, WGI has thrilled audiences from coast to coast.

And yet, somehow, returning to Dayton feels like coming home.

Traveling to this city has become as much of a yearly ritual as gathering with our families for holiday celebrations. Although we’ve enjoyed different cultural and recreational opportunities in other host cities, when WGI isn’t held in Dayton, something just doesn’t feel right.

Dayton has been the cordial host to our world championships an astounding 19 times, and each time we return, we seem to get a little bit more comfortable. From restaurants and hotels, to shopping malls and movie theaters, wherever you go this weekend, you’ll come across school busses and rented vans packed with giddy performers in various states of costuming. If you don’t encounter a guard or drum line squeezing in a quick meal or nap before their next performance, you’ll more than likely run into someone with whom you either performed or taught. For longtime winter guard participants, experiences such as these are as comforting as that old recliner in your grandmother’s living room.

competitive drum line activity to local citizens. But in Dayton, everyone already seems to know what we’re doing here. They read about it in newspapers and see it on television, and over the years, they’ve become accustomed to us “taking over” their city once a year. From scores of rollaway hotel beds to last-minute banquet hall rentals, Dayton sees us coming, and does its collective best to accommodate all of our many special requests and needs.

Most of us have been coming here for so many years, we no longer need a road map. We know exactly how to get to the Nutter Center, “headquarters,” and of course our much-loved University of Dayton arena.

Indeed, long before floor coverings became the standard, the aqua and red “U.D.” logo in the center of the gym floor was synonymous with Winter Guard International. (Truth be told, some of us rather miss that old logo!)

Not unlike our childhood homes, this arena holds some of our most cherished memories. For the thousands if not millions of performers in our activity, walking onto the University of Dayton arena floor to perform with our peers “one last time” was a profoundly important rite of passage. This is where we came into our own as seasoned performers. It’s also where we learned that hard work and dedication paid off, not necessarily in a judge’s score, but in the lifealtering experience of performing for the best, most appreciative audience we could ever dream of.

Here in this arena, many of us bid tear-soaked farewells to our dearest friends, and if we are lucky, it’s also where we get to see them each year when we gather to witness the next generation of performers having the same experience that we did so many years before.

Since 1983, when WGI first arrived in Dayton, there have been numerous improvements and renovations to these facilities.

It wasn’t that long ago that we accepted frantic tosses out in the unpredictable Midwest winter weather, a hot and cramped souvenir sales area, and all but nonexistent storage facilities as part of the world championships experience! Now, WGI is extremely fortunate to have a truly state-of-the-art performing venue at the University of Dayton. This season marks the first time that Winter Guard and Percussion World Championships will be held on separate weekends. Now more WGI participants than ever will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the thrill of performing in the U.D. Arena!

Whether this is your first WGI World Championship or your twenty-eighth, whether you’re a seasoned “vet” or a first-year “rookie” walking down that infamous tunnel for the first time, we’re confident you’ll sense an unmistakable aura of excitement and history here in this arena. We also think you’ll agree that, while we may travel to other cities from time to time, Dayton is WGI. Welcome back!

WGI (Winter Guard International) Sport of the Arts is a non-profit umbrella organization guiding the competitive development of winter guards and indoor percussion ensembles. WGI is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of representatives from all geographic areas of the country and representatives of the top winter guards and indoor percussion ensembles in the world.

WGI exists to foster positive experiences for all who participate, by promoting education, creativity, and freedom of expression through the unification of pageantry and the performing arts.

WGI has chosen competition as its method for organizing youth activities in pursuit of high standards of achievement. This three-day Championship event will showcase over 300 winter guards and 160 percussion ensembles from over 30 states

and 3 countries. Students prepare for this event by competing in one of 23 Regional winter guard and percussion contests across the country and England.

This year WGI celebrates its 28th year hosting winter guard competitions and the 13th year

for hosting percussion competitions. The “Sport of the Arts� offers a unique blend of artistry and athleticism and is the leader in the pageantry and performing arts community.

WGI judges undergo a rigorous training program including an extensive period of trial judging.

Judges applying for WGI approval must complete a home study process, the Judges’ Academy, trialing on guards in every class, and participate in a continuing education program that encompasses annual study requirements and clinics. The judging community is a body of professionals who have come from the activity and are now working to perpetuate the unique experience WGI Sport of the Arts offers. Many are trained in dance and theatre and bring that knowledge to the performers. Many are educators and professionals who share a common understanding of the gigantic role the pageantry arts played in their own lives. These judges endeavor to offer a quality experience to the thousands of young people who grace our stage and give us their best.

Color Guard Criteria

The Judging System

The qualities that WGI judges measure for color guard are divided into four areas or captions: General Effect, Ensemble Analysis, Individual Analysis of Equipment and Individual Analysis of Movement. Each total score is out of a possible 100 points. At World Championships, the guards are judged by a double panel to assure the fairest and broadest evaluation possible.

Individual Analysis of Equipment (IA) 20 points. Equipment judges analyze the range and depth of the choreographic efforts of the flags, rifle, sabers or other props being manipulated. Equipment judges will also analyze the training, excellence and achievement of the performers in comparison to multiple responsibilities being asked of the performer.

Individual Analysis of Movement (IA) 20 points. Movement judges analyze the range and depth of the movement vocabulary while spinning equipment and while strictly dancing. Special consideration is made regarding the training, excellence, and achievement of the performers, as well as the uniformity from performer to performer.

Ensemble Analysis (EA) 20 points. Ensemble judges analyze the quality of the design, and the depth of the composition of the program as a whole. Special consideration is given to the technical and expressive excellence demonstrated by the performers. A close look is given to each moment in time.

General Effect (GE) 40 points. General Effect judges reward the plan of events or effects. Effects can be intellectual, (thought provoking, complex in design, literal to musical interpretation) emotional (adrenaline, broad range of human emotions), or aesthetic (color, shape, artistic). The Hall of Fame is the highest honor to those individuals who make a significant contribution to WGI, and who have in some way influenced the course of our history. Their contribution may be made through artistic standards, administrative leadership or adjudication.

George Oliviero Walnut Creek, CA

George has an unparalleled history of service training judges. George served as the WGI Assistant Director of Education where he helped many judges enter the WGI judging arena. George has been extremely active on the Task Force, serving as a Facilitator in Movement and EA throughout the years. George is a mentor to many, a gentleman to all and is always willing to volunteer his time and energy to WGI and excellence in adjudication.

Mark & Mike Miller Dayton, OH

Mark and Mike Miller were born into the world of pageantry. After aging out of the Miller’s Blackhawks, they continued to teach until the Blackhawks organization was retired in 1990. Mark and Mike also instructed the Miamisburg High School Winter Guard from 1980-2002 winning Scholastic World gold medals in 1991, 1992 and 1998. They both served on the WGI Board of Directors for 21 years and served on the WGI Task Force where they worked tirelessly to push the boundaries of color guard.

Ward Durrett Estes Park, CO

Ward is considered by many to be a Founding Father of indoor percussion.

He was pivotal in the development of the Percussion Division within WGI serving as Chief Percussion Judge for several years.

His vision helped define the standards within this division.

Scott has created an amazing span of talent and contribution to this activity. His work with James Logan High School, Blue Devils, State Street Review, Tate Chaparrals, to name a few, are examples of his passionate approach to pageantry.

Harry Sampson Stoneham, MA

New England’s Regional Director since the inception of WGI, Harry continues his commitment to the development of WGI. A specialist in timing and penalties, he is a resource for units and other regional directors.

The premise of innovation, imagination, quality and risk are only a few words that apply to the unparalleled contributions he has made to WGI. Karl has brought us program concepts that have awakened awareness in our minds. From Odyssey to Fantasia he has been intense in his approach to his programs as well as his respect for his competitors.

The expansion and growth of WGI is directly due to the vision of this man who is responsible for the creation of both the Percussion and Marching Band divisions.

Jeffrey Namian New York City, NY

Through his work with units such as Skylarks, Blessed Sacrament, Genesis II, Choctawhatchee and Tate, Jeff has continued to set new artistic standards year after year. His imaginative designs have spanned two decades and reached all three classes of competition. Jeff was also a major contributor to the development of the World Championship yearbook. He has served five terms on the WGI Task Force.

Denise served on the task force for nearly ten years while mentoring young instructors who have graduated from her color guards, including Emerald Marquis. Denise was also responsible for the 27th Lancers whose impact opened the door for small guards within the World Class.

Marie is an original founder of WGI and served as Chief Judge in the early years of the organization. She was instrumental in

A builder of champions, this innovative designer was pivotal in uniting the East and West when WGI was founded. Director of such color guards as Holley Hawks and Bishop Kearney, Vinnie created unique shows that are still benchmarks of performance excellence.

An adjudication leader for more than 30 years, Mary’s integrity and commitment to the performers has set her apart. She served on the WGI Task Force for a number of years and continues to offer a wealth of information to guards, beginning judges, and pageantry as a whole.

Fred J. Miller Dayton, OH

Founder of the Miller’s Blackhawks, Fred is considered a master showman of color guard. He served as WGI Financial Director for a number of years and contributed to our growth through his expertise as unit director, local circuit administrator, and enthusiastic advocate.

Jay Murphy Walnut Creek, CA

Through his shows with St. Anthony’s Imperiales, Blue Devils, San Jose Raiders, Clovis West High School, and other units, Jay’s approach to color guard marks him as the paradigm which has defined the standards of design and creativity.

Mickey Kelly Madison, CT

Under his direction, the Skylarks were one of the most creative units in the history of WGI. Mickey also served as Judge Coordinator, bringing standards, accountability and quality to the adjudication.

Wayne Wengert Berthoud, CO

Our organization was incredibly impacted by technological advancements brought by Wayne. His computer expertise, linked offices in 4 states, created the original WGI web page and designed the tabulation programs that are still in use today.

Dolores Zappala Wakefield, MA

President of the Board of Directors for more than a decade, Dolores spearheaded WGI through its’ critical growing years as an organization. As director of Blessed Sacrament, she leaves a legacy that thrives to this day.

Sal & LuAnne Salas Madison, WI

Leaders in innovative design and authors of the grand production within color guard, Sal and LuAnne created the State Street Review and moved the activity into a new level of entertainment. Their legacy survives today as their many alumni now instruct their own units.

1992

Stanley Knaub Seattle, WA

Stanley was responsible for securing the funding and organizing the meeting that ultimately founded WGI. He revolutionized the activity with the addition of dance to color guard. Stanley passed away in 2002.

Lynn Lindstrom Arvada, CO

As Executive Director, Lynn was instrumental in nurturing the explosive growth of color guard from 30 guards in 1978 to over 300 participating at the point when she retired in 2001. She led WGI’s expansion into percussion ensemble and marching band competitions.

Shirlee Whitcomb Walnut Creek, CA

Shirlee and others who founded the organization in 1977 shared the vision of WGI. Her contributions over the past 22 years as Education Director have included the education initiatives for instructors and judges that are unparalleled in the pageantry activity.

All groups who participate in the World Championships are invited to submit one applicant from their unit who is a high school senior or already enrolled in college.

A committee of volunteers, instructors, and judges review dozens of applications for these awards and select students who stand out in qualities of academic, artistic, and personal standards.

World Championship DVDs 2005 WGI on DVD Even more special features

WGI Sport of the Arts is pleased to announce plans for the 2005 Sport of the Arts World Championships video products. Again this year an all DVD format will be utilized to cover the competition. Due to the growth of the indoor percussion activity, there is now an additional percussion DVD. The Percussion Championship DVD format now mirrors that of the color guard disks. Additional views are offered of the top placing World Class units finals performances. These bonus tracks provide a bird’s-eye view for those who like to watch the high cam view, as well as a floor shot for those great performance faces.

Adding to the excitement is the low pricing which is still in effect from 2004. “The WGI Board of Directors is committed to producing a quality World Championship video product and pricing it where every participant and fan can afford to own one,” said WGI Marketing Manager Bart Woodley.

The soundtrack will further celebrate this diversity of thought combined with the shared experience of the human condition by presenting various stylistic treatments of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts.” Pride’s 30 extremely talented young men and women will take full advantage of the staging, choreography, set design, costuming, and color selection to develop subtle metaphors for a very simple message: Whether our individual passions are big, small, local, global, or completely personal; “Everybody Hurts Sometimes.

In 2006, WGI will continue the tradition of hosting the World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. 2006 will mark the 20th time World Championships have been held in the city of Dayton.

Join the excitement as the Color Guard World Championships take place April 6, 7, 8, 2006. The Percussion World Championships will run April 20, 21, 22, 2006.
