As we begin a new academic year, I would like to warmly welcome both our returning families and those who are joining our school community for the first time. A new school year brings excitement and new opportunities and at WGHS, we remain committed to providing a wonderful learning environment where every student can thrive.
We have had a busy week at WGHS! Several Enrichment Clubs started this week with many more to follow from Tuesday. Sign-up sheets for House Arts went up in The Hub – a huge number of students have expressed an interest which is fantastic to see, it’s a real highlight in the WGHS calendar. We hope that this E-Bulletin will give you a window into what our school is all about. This year, we will circulate an E-Bulletin once per fortnight and our brief update on the alternate weeks.
I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that school i closed to students this coming Monday for the Entrance Te as we prepare for School Admissions September 2026. Please can I also encourage the joint letter circulated on behalf of myself and West Midlands Police.

Exciting New Homework Projects for Our KS3 Students!
This year, our KS3 students in English are diving into fresh, creative homework projects designed to inspire collaboration and open their eyes to a variety of creative career paths they might not have considered before. Each term, students will work together in groups on engaging tasks that challenge their thinking and creativity.
Here’s what’s coming up this term:
Year 7: Students will be forming book clubs, where they’ll learn how to discuss books for pleasure within a group setting. This will help them develop their communication skills and foster a love of reading.
Year 8: Inspired by the renowned debates held at Oxford University, Year 8 will be mastering the art of formal debating. They’ll gain valuable experience in constructing arguments, public speaking, and critical thinking.
Year 9: Year 9 students will explore Shakespearean adaptations on film. They’ll analyse key scenes, focusing on visual storytelling techniques such as lighting and camera angles, deepening their understanding of how classic texts are brought to life on screen.
At the heart of these projects is a desire to highlight the incredible opportunities within creative careersfields that rely on innovation, collaboration, and critical thinking. We want our students to see that creativity isn’t just about art or performance; it’s a vital skill across many industries and can lead to fulfilling, dynamic career paths. By nurturing these skills early, we hope to empower our students to dream big and explore all the possibilities their futures hold.

EnrichmentSpotlight:Netball
This week has seen the start of our Sports and Music Enrichment clubs. Each edition of the E-Bulletin will feature an Enrichment Spotlight on one of our clubs to give you an insight into life and the community at WGHS.
Netball club always proves to be very popular across all year groups during the Autumn and Spring Terms. It provides an opportunity for participants of all abilities, to develop the skills they learn during PE lessons in a game environment. There are opportunities for all year groups to compete in regular fixtures against other schools as well as tournaments and even our annual residential trip to Condover College.

Welcome to the Book Nook,your one-stop shop for all things Library, by your school librarian - Miss Rowe!
By the end of last academic year, our students checked out a total of 5,045 books across both the school library and our online platform, eLibrary! We thank each and every one of you for supporting and encouraging your children on their reading journey. Can we beat that number for this year?!
In the first ever edition of The Book Nook, I wanted to introduce all of the library services available to students of all ages, starting with library itself. Some facts about the school library:
We have over 8,000 books for students to enjoy, including both non-fiction and fiction.
The library opens at 8:30am and closes after school at 5pm (4:30pm on Friday).
We are also open at rec and enrichment time.
Students can have up to 4 books at a time for a maximum of 3 weeks.
We also have our online platform, eLibrary! Here are some facts about eLibrary: The eLibrary and our physical library have different catalogues, and you can rent from both libraries at the same time.
Students can sign in with their school email and password to gain access to over 3,800 eBooks and audiobooks.
Using the eLibrary app, students can read on their phones, tablets, and laptops outside of school.

Year 7- Design Technology -Textiles
In Textiles, Year 7 have had an introduction to fibres and fabrics and explored properties of different materials. They also learned about the different types of scissors they will be using; how to use, carry and store them safely; as well as how to make the perfect cut!
Year 8 - Latin
Year 8 had their first Latin lesson of the new academic year this week. It involved a refresher of Year 7 Latin, creating a mind map of everything they could remember about Latin Grammar - there were plenty of hands up and answers being offered.
Year 9 - Music
This term in Music, Year 9 are learning about:
What different elements make up a pop song e.g. structure, rhythmic features
How to aurally appraise and analyse a pop song according to the musical elements
How to perform a pop song (Don't Stop Believing)
How technology is used e.g. the recording process etc.
Year 10 - Food Preparation & Nutrition
This week Year 10 have been making Star Bread with a savoury filling. They prepared various fillings such as cheese, spinach, salami, red onion, chorizo, brie. The students were able to practise various skills including preparing ingredients, knife skills, making dough, kneading and shaping. The Food room smelled delicious!
Year 11 - Physical Education - Badminton
Year 11 have been working on their Badminton Skills, working in pairs and offering coaching tips for technique and shot choice. It was great to see the students enjoying physical activity. Badminton is very popular amongst the older year groups and we also offer Badminton Club at Enrichment time for years 9-13 (check the timetable)
Year 12 - Further Maths
This week our students were learning about how to find the mean and variance of a probability distribution. Whilst this is somewhat theoretical it does have many uses in the real world such as optimizing profit in a business or assessing risk for an insurance company.
Year 13 - Psychology
This week, Year 13 have completed their Attachment unit test. They prepared for this by completing an essay plan carousel task. This was to recap what they learnt last half term and strengthen their AO2 application and AO3 evaluation skills which supported them in their assessment.

A huge congratulations to Year 7, Stafford house student, Hafsa who won a silver medal at the British Weightlifting Championships, which were held at Oldbury Academy on 7 September. Year 7 student Francesca (Paget house) competed at the Audacity Dance Competition at West Midlands Safari Park on Sunday 7 September, with her dance team. She won both her dances and has now qualified for the Finals which will take place in Gloucester in February- Congratulations Francesca, we wish you the very best of luck with your training over the next few months. We look forward to hearing how you get on in the Finals!

During the summer holidays, Martha (Stafford house) was interviewed live on Newsround. Martha and her family were invited to the National Memorial Arboretum on the anniversary of VJ Day for the live broadcast of Newsround where Martha discussed her Great, Great Uncle who fought in Burma during the war. She proudly displayed his medals. What a great experience - combining Martha’s passion for history and her determination to pass on the message of remembrance - congratulations Martha!
A huge well done to Year 8 student Jazmyn (Stafford) and her netball team Barr Beacon who have qualified for U13 ENG Youth Netball Premier League (YNPL). The YNPL has been established to provide a platform for elite youth netball clubs nationwide, to enable them to participate in high-level competition more frequently.

Harvest Collection
Friday 19 September will be our Harvest Collection for The Good Shepherd Wolverhampton. We have been supporting The Good Shepherd for a number of years and our Charity Prefects are delighted to be carrying on with this tradition.
If you are able to support our Harvest Collection please send your daughter with tins, packets, toiletries etc - no fresh produce please. There will be a collection point in The Hub. Thank you for your support.

Reminder – Flu Vaccination
'Vaccination UK, who are commissioned by the NHS to provide child immunisations within schools, will be attending our school on Thursday 25 September to deliver the Flu Nasal Spray’s or IM alternative (porcine free injection). This is for school Years 7– 11.
It is important that Vaccination UK receive a consent form back for every child, even if you do NOT wish for your child to receive the immunisation, there is an option to decline. Failure to complete a consent form, may result in your child missing their flu immunisation this year. We cannot guarantee that you will be contacted by our team to obtain consent. Well Being Tips for Students
Each half term our Pastoral Team share Well Being tips with students which are displayed around school and discussed in form time with their tutors. Students also have a number of support line phone numbers in their planners should they need additional support.

Girls' Night In - Year 7
The Parents' Guild will be hosting a Girls' Night in movie night for Year 7 students on Friday 26 September, from 4:30 - 7:30pm.
Join us for an evening of fun, games and prizes, plus a movie and snacks - the screening will be confirmed through form tutors next week!
