Wolverhampton Girls’ High School Celebrates Recognition in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 - Top State Secondary Schools in the West Midlands
We are proud to announce that WGHS has been named in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 for Top State Secondary Schools in the West Midlands.
The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide is widely regarded as the definitive ranking of the country’s top schools. Inclusion in this prestigious list places WGHS as the 8th highest-achieving school in the region and 61 highest-achieving school Nationally. st
Trudi Young Headteacher at Wolverhampton Girls’ High School said:
‘We are delighted to be recognised in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide -Top Ten State Secondary Schools in the West Midlands. This achievement reflects the hard work, ambition and dedication of our students, staff and school community. We remain committed to providing an exceptional education, fostering an environment where every girl can thrive and preparing our students for their next steps.’
As a school we are incredibly proud of the academic successes of our students, but we believe these successes are one part of a much wider journey – offering opportunities inside and outside the classroom, supporting students to discover their strengths and passions. Equally important is our commitment to exceptional pastoral care, ensuring students feel valued and supported within our school community, allowing our girls to achieve their individual best while growing to become wellround, resilient and happy individuals.

On Tuesday our Year 7's had their first Citizenship Day The day is designed to help students understand what it means to be an active, responsible member of society. Over the course of the day our students participated in five Sixth Form led sessions which involved group tasks, workshops, debates, quizzes and practical tasks.
The five sessions were:
Endangered Animals
Hurricane Melissa
#orangewolves - https://www.orangewolves.net/ Political Parties and Democracy Power of Good.
A huge thanks to the Sixth Form team for their time, effort, and excellent leadership during the sessions.

38 parents from Wolverhampton Girls’ High School attended Elevate Education’s Webinar this week on resilience. Their next live webinar will be taking place on Tuesday 16 December and will help parents to support their child in alleviating stress. th As the new school year is often a period of adjustment for students, encouraging open communication around mental wellbeing at home can help prevent isolation when it comes to exam and revision anxiety.

The Religious Studies Department recently welcomed Kelsang Deden from the Kadampa Meditation Centre in Birmingham to talk the GCSE RS students about Buddhist beliefs and practices. The students enjoyed hearing about Deden's life as an ordained nun, asking questions to enhance their understanding and they experienced some guided Buddhist meditation. Thank you so much to Deden for supporting our students!

Next week our School Dining provider Innovate Catering will be offering students the opportunity to have Christmas lunch in school with their friends. Congratulations to Shayana in year 11 who recently performed at The Shaftesbury Theatre on London’s West End. She performed through her stagecoach group, and had to pass a round of auditions to get into the West End Troupe. Their performance was inspired by the musical Hamilton. What an incredible experience! Congratulations Shayana.

At just 16,Taarini completed her first solo flight,a remarkable accomplishment that also makes her theyoungest British-Asian girl to fly solo She began flying at 15,successfully passed all her nine pilot theoryexams in under ayear, and is nowtraining for her Private Pilot License. Her familyare incrediblyproud of her dedication, resilience and ambition. Her journeyis a powerful reminder that with passion and hard work, the skyis no limit. What an incredible achievement, huge congratulations from everyone atWGHS!

As the days growshorter and the weather gets colder, what better wayto spend a dreary December lunch breakthan inside the Library, settled in with a good book? That's certainly what our students have been thinking-we've seen a great increase invisitors here in the Libraryduring our social times in the past fewweeks,no doubt due to the cold weather!
The Libraryis open everydayat Rec(10am for KS4/5,11am for KS3) and SocialTime (1:05pm*), so if the weather outside is frightful, your child mayfind the Libraryto be delightful! ❄
Here are some stats for December so far: As of 4th December,we've had 75 books taken out of the Library. That's an average of ~19 books per dayso far-not bad! Can we keep that pace up? Our final total for November was 307books.This is,unfortunately,a decrease from October's total-let's see if we can beat 307this month! Our most popular bookso far has been Cogheart byPeter Bunzl. MyStar LibraryBorrower for the first half of December is...Davina fromAudleyHouse! ⭐
So far,our eLibraryhas had 16 loans total this month, though it's still earlydays! We finished November with 162 total loans,an improvement from last month. There's no clear frontrunner for our most popular bookso far this month, but the Lottie Brooks series has seen great interest so far... MyStar eLibraryBorrower for the first half of December is...Testimonyfrom Stafford House!⭐
As always, ifyou oryour child has anyquestions, you can email me at growe@wghs.org.ukor come andvisit me in the library.
Happyreading!

Year 13 recently explored Social policy and Sociology, where they talked about whether Sociologists should get involved in research for governments that can have a direct impact on social policy formation. They discussed why Sociologists are important in this way and also what the potential barriers are affecting their involvement and work with governments. They looked at a number of Sociologists who have worked directly with governments and helped to introduce new social policies. Mrs Hill linked this to existing University courses that are available for students to study if they have an interest in Sociology and social policy beyond A Level and what the practical routes are into this. There is also a display of multiple University courses relating to Sociology in our Sociology Classroom.

Last week we had an incredible couple of days with our Outreach Prefects and over 100 primary school pupils who joined us for our 2 Maths Workshops. Year 5 pupils from local Primary Schools joined us to help us solve ‘The Mysterious Disappearance of Miss Plaice’. They had 4 sessions focusing on 4 different Maths problems in which there was a teaching section, followed by the children using their problem solving skills. The end goal was to find a 4 digit code in order to unlock Miss Plaice’s locked drawer to discover where she had gone. The primary school children had an absolute blast and many expressed an interest in coming to Girls’ High. Our Outreach Prefects were fantastic, we had so much wonderful feedback about our studentsthey are a real credit to WGHS, thank you to all our students who supported the event. A special thank you to Mr Brocklehurst and Mrs Pilditch who delivered the sessions - 2 fantastic days raising aspirations for local girls.
