AMessagefromourHeadteacher

It’s been another busy week at WGHS. Students are working hard rehearsing for the upcoming House Arts competition. There is a real buzz of anticipation across the school now. Details will be sent to parents/carers regarding ticket sales shortly. Our Sixth Form Netballers have participated in a ConnectEd Netball Hub event at WGHS. Excitement has been building for the Parents’ Guild Year 7 Movie Night this evening. This is a great event to help year 7's develop their friendships and relax with fellow students.

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind parents/carers that school will close early on Monday to facilitate our Parental Engagement event. Students will be dismissed at 2pm, and we kindly ask that you make any necessary arrangements for their collection. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and involvement in school life.

We look forward to welcoming many of you on Monday

Warm regards

An Introduction to A Level History for Year 12

One of the key components in A Level History is Tsarist and Communist Russia, so this week our Year 12 students have been taking part in some "world building" activities. The Year 12s are studying Russia in the late 1800s and for most of them this is a time and place that is completely new to them.

Our aim in lessons this week has been to bring this new world to life to boost their understanding and give them a really strong start on the A-Level course. We have looked at diaries, images and artwork from the time to construct a picture of everyday life: from the humble serfs out in the fields, to the noblemen in their mansions, to the Tsar himself. It's been a great start for Year 12 and we ' re looking forward to telling more stories as they build up their "worldly" knowledge over the next two years.

EnrichmentSpotlight:JuniorChoir

The WGHS Junior Choir meets every Monday during Social Enrichment time. Junior Choir offers students the opportunity to explore their passion for singing and music. Open to all Years 7, 8 and 9 students, the club focuses on building vocal skills, learning harmonies, and performing a variety of different songs, from contemporary hits to traditional pieces.

This week was the clubs first meeting and they were working on songs from the musicals Dear Evan Hansen (You Will Be Found) and The Sound of Music (My Favourite Things). It’s not just about singing it’s about teamwork, confidence, and having fun through music. Whether an experienced vocalist or just fancy trying something new, all are welcome at Junior Choir.

Junior Choir is led by Curriculum Leader for Music, Ms Douglas -‘Now is a fantastic time to join Junior Choir, we are just getting started and we will soon be working on our first showcase piece for our annual Punch & Carols Evening on 9th December.’

TheBookNook

Welcome back to the Book Nook, your one-stop shop for all things Library, by your school librarian - Miss Rowe!

It's been lovely to see so many new and returning faces visiting the Library over the last few weeks and taking out a huge variety of books. We have some very exciting events coming up - on Monday 29 September at th social time, we have the first meeting of the KS3 Book Club! Students are encouraged to bring a book they would like to discuss. This club will run monthly on the last Monday of every month, so be sure to make a note of the dates!

We also have a KS4/5 Book Club starting very soon on the 6 October - similarly, we th encourage students to bring along a book. KS4/5 Book Club will meet on the first Monday of every month.

We've had a fantastic start to the year already- here are some stats!

Since the start of September: 467 books have been borrowed from the Library. Of these, 370 were fiction and 106 were non-fiction.

Our most popular book has been A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. My Star Library Borrower this month is... Aaliyah from Stafford House!

Over on our eLibrary, we ' ve had 128 eBooks and audiobooks borrowed.

Our most popular book on eLibrary has been A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas.

My Star eLibrary Borrower this month is... Qihan from Audley House!

As always, if you or your child has any questions, you can email me at growe@wghs.org.uk or come and visit me in the library.

Year 7- Science

As part of their cells topic, Year 7 have conducted an experiment this week. They took samples from some onions and looked at them under a microscope. They were able to see real-life plant cells, including the cell components within them such as the nucleus and the cell wall!

Year 8 - History

Year 8 are currently studying the English Civil War and the execution of Charles I. They have been exploring the main reason for the defeat of Charles I and why. Using their whiteboards to identify those students in the class who had highlighted the same reason, they formed 6 argumentations of historians to defend their position with supporting evidence.

Year 9 - Spanish

This week Year 9 are continuing with their topic on Holidays and have been working on the verb ‘to go ’ . They are developing language so at the end of the module they will be able to write an essay in Spanish about who they went with, where they went and what they did. Bien Hecho!

Year 10 -Computer science

Year 10 Computer Scientists have been looking into the most important component in a computer - the CPU! To help it perform its crucial role, the students have been understanding key components within the CPU with an in depth look at registers. They used a website that replicates a CPU cycle called Little Man Computer to explain the specific register roles.

Year 11 - English

Year 11 were selling a stately English manor house up for sale on Rightmove by writing creative descriptions of its rooms and gardens. The class were working in groups to each describe one room/area of the house to contribute to the website!

The skills in the lesson contributed to them crafting an intricate setting as required for English Language Paper 1: Question 5.

Year 12 - Sociology

Year 12 have had an introduction to Marxism this week. They have played a game to highlight inequality and power structures in a capitalist system from a Marxist system and also seeing if they can then apply to a song that discusses capitalist consumerism and false class consciousness.

Year 13 -Art

Year 13 are continuing sketchbook work for their final projects. Although we are unable to share any specific pieces, there is lots of outstanding work being carried out in their Art lessons.

Last winter I trained at the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Wolverhampton girls’ hub in Brewood From there I was selected as the best player to train with the Midlands regional hub at a cricket camp during the summer. This was held in Oundle and we also played a match at Repton where I got to bowl at the Brazilian cricket captain! Later in the Summer I represented the Midlands U16s team in a national 3 day tournament back in Oundle, playing teams from London, North East and South West. From there I got selected to represent the U14s select XI for the North of England to play the South of England at Lords Cricket ground in London. This was an amazing opportunity as we also had a tour of the ground and lunch in the players’ dining room. Unfortunately we didn't win the match but it was an unforgettable experience.

Jessica,Year 10, Ferrers House

On 13th September I took part in the Ministrada held at the famous Tower Ballrooms in Blackpool with my gymnastics squad. Normally as artistic gymnasts we train across all four apparatus and usually compete individually and against each other so to walk out onto the floor as a united force and perform together was amazing. We performed a gymnasia display to a melody from the Phantom of the Opera. The Ministrada included teams from all over the UK. Being on the Ballroom floor performing with my team at the historic venue was really special and it was an unforgettable experience.

Thank You from Edukid

We have received a lovely email from Edukid, a charity who several of our students supported last year. The email thanks us for our students’ support of projects with their international communities. On 16 July Audley House students Siya and Ngozi, organised a samosa sale raising £122.30 a fantastic effort. Audley House student, Husna, also supported the charity by creating chessboards which were taken to schools in Uganda in July; they are now kept in Koch Goma primary school and have brought so much joy. The fundraising that she did is also making a huge difference to help support the water programmes that they have in place for these communities - A huge well done to Husna, Siya and Ngozi for all their efforts!
