Message from our Headteacher
This week we have said a fond farewell to our ongoing Year 13 cohort. On Monday, I was incredibly proud of our students as we listened to their reflections on a Girls’ High education. We wish each and every student all the best for all the exciting challenges that lie ahead. At the end of last week I also attended the celebration event at Buckingham Palace for those students who have achieved their gold Duke of Edinburgh, alongside Mrs Milovsorov, our centre’ s coordinator. Seventeen students (past and present) took part in these celebrations.

A Golden Day at the Palace
Last Friday Mrs Young and Mrs Milovsorov accompanied 9 of our Year 13 students to Buckingham Palace for a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award celebration event. Mrs Milovsorov is our Duke of Edinburgh Award co-ordinator and has kindly shared the below overview of the day:
Mrs Young and I had the privilege of being invited to Buckingham Palace last Friday to a DofE Gold award celebration event. There were 17 participants from our centre invited, including 9 current Year 13 students. We also bumped into a group of students who had left 4 and 5 years ago.
We had a lovely day (the weather was great for a garden party) experiencing inspirational talks, one from an 18 year old Gold award holder who shared his DofE journey; another from Hannah Hampton, who is a professional goalkeeper for Chelsea and the England team. We were also honoured to hear from His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh. It was wonderful to celebrate the hard work of the students. The Gold Award takes at least 12 months to complete, testing resilience and dedication.
Some of the Year 13's were excited to meet TV personalities, Dr Ranj Singh and Big Zuu, who were among the special guests in attendance.
We enjoyed tea in DofE travel mugs that we have been able to keep as a memento from the day (mine is now my favoured school mug and taking pride of place on my desk at WGHS) and a cupcake.
Mrs Young and I finished the day with a walk around Buckingham Palace Gardens before heading back to Euston to catch the train.
Congratulations to Amelia, Jessica, Emma, Georgina, Mia, Rebecca, Jasimran, Riya and Jiya for completing the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award what a fantastic achievement!
IChemE Young Engineer Awards for Innovation and Sustainability
We are delighted to announce that the WGHS team, made up of five amazing Year 12 girls Sana, Shay, Rishika, Hafsa and Shafia, have secured a spot in the top three of the IChemE Young Engineer Awards for Innovation and Sustainability (Schools Award) with their project exploring bioluminescence as a light source. The IChemE Young Engineer Awards celebrate innovative ideas in chemical engineering, challenging students to contribute to sustainability through research, design, or new applications. The WGHS proposal is centred around the creation of a light source that runs independent of electricity. At least 1.18 billion people suffer from energy poverty without access to reliable and affordable electricity, and this invention will significantly boost quality of life for very many people with a light source powered by bioluminescence, using locally sourced bioluminescent bacteria and upcycled plastic bottles. The overall winners will be announced on June 4th, and all five students, along with staff, will attend the YEAIS Showcase and Celebration on June 16th at the Royal Society in London. Their poster will be displayed, and they will join other finalists in celebrating innovation. This achievement highlights our students’ creativity and hard work and we look forward to seeing where this journey takes them! Congratulations girls!
