A Message from our Headteacher As we reach the end of Spring Term 1, I would like to take a moment to reflect on what has been a fantastic start to the calendar year at WGHS. This half term has been marked by outstanding commitment to learning across all year groups. Our students have demonstrated impressive focus in lessons, mock exams, NEA practical assessments and many more.

Beyond the classroom, the richness of school life continues to thrive. From sporting fixtures, preparations for music performances, House Winter Games and the numerous extra-curricular activities our students take part in, they always represent us impeccably and we are incredibly proud of them.

As we look ahead to Spring Term 2, our focus will remain firmly on maintaining high standards, supporting Year 11 and Year 13 with their exam preparation, and continuing to provide a broad and balanced experience for all students.

Sporting Success Regional School’s Netball Tournament Student report by team captain Danika

Entering the Regional School’s Netball Tournament, we were immensely proud to represent South Staffordshire at such a high level of competition. Our group consisted largely of private schools from across the region, which we knew would be incredibly challenging, especially at this standard. However, our wins against Denstone College, Wrekin College and Weobley High showed that even against tough opposition, we can thrive and consistently display exceptional teamwork and skill. Unfortunately, facing even stronger opponents later on, meant we missed out on a semi-final place and finished fourth in our group. Although this result was disappointing, it in no way reflects the effort, determination and perseverance shown throughout the tournament.

A huge thank you to Emily-Rose (GK) and Nyiamh (GA) for playing up and confidently matching the skill level of older opponents. Well done to Mel (WD) and Favour (GD) for holding such a strong defence, forcing numerous errors and making crucial, gamechanging interceptions. A massive well done to Sukhmani (GS) for her outstanding shooting, showing composure and accuracy right until the final whistle. Playing alongside her as a GA has been amazing, our connection in the shooting circle is unmatched and brings out the best in my game, which was evident through our strong movement within the circle and consistent shooting accuracy. Well done to Brianna (C), who once again demonstrated her exceptional playing standard, showing incredible endurance as centre, driving the game forward and constantly finding space. Also well done to Tamara (WA) who delivered an amazing performance by dodging and finding space and feeding accurately into the circle. Well done to Joanne (GK)for her impressive reach, especially against taller shooters, and to Honey (GS), who has shown huge improvement in her movement on court.

Each and every one of you is a true asset to this team, and your commitment and effort will not be forgotten.

A huge thank you to all our supporters who lifted our spirits and gave us the energy to persevere.

Lastly thank you to all the teachers, especially Miss Canlett, who dedicated her own time and encouraged us to reach our full potential. Getting this far would not have been possible without everyone’s support.

I am incredibly proud to be part of this team, and it has been amazing to see how far we have grown. Well done everyone!

HOUSE WINTER GAMES HIGHLIGHTS FEBRUARY 2026

Contributions from this years Year 11 Press Pack - Mehar, Sophie, Myia, Beth, Iris, Myla and Sarah.

At WGHS, house spirit is crucial! So, we asked some key figures around the school the questions EVERYBODY wants to know. First, our favourite question, “If your house had a hype song, what would it be?”. Mr King (Paget) decided - after giving it intense consideration - that his house would have the song “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” by the Backstreet Boys, with “Backstreet” replaced by “Paget”.

Mr Sadik (in Stafford) thought that his house hype song would be “Blue (da ba dee)” to reflect the colour of the house. Interesting choice!

Another question we asked was the motivations to win. It seems there is a rivalry blossoming between Audley and Ferrers... The Audley house leader herself (Ms Bould) AND the vice junior house captain (Alicia - Y9) said that their sole reason for their desperation to win was to beat Ferrers (and Mrs Milovsorov). It was mentioned that “Ferrers are coming for us [Audley]!” We’ll have to keep an eye on them!

WHAT DOES THE COMMUNITY THINK? STAFFORD Stafford’s House Captains Mati And Mille had some wise almost poetic word- ‘House Winter Games is more than a season - it’s a rooted tradition that we will greatly miss’. According to Stafford’s Head of House, Miss Price ‘HWG brings the school community together and embraces healthy house competition’. Miss Banduri also reciprocated this message ‘It’s great to be part of Stafford House and its fantastic to see the girls challenging themselves’. They really have encapsulated the Girls’ High experience.

PAGET The Head of House for Paget, Mrs Clarke, told us the best part of HWG was ‘the way it forms new friendships, people are forced out of their comfort zones’. Mrs Young, our headmistress, a former Paget echoed this sentiment when she said ‘It’s lovely to see the girls getting along and enjoying the activities’. Which shows the WGHS experience.

FERRERS House Captain Scarlet, graced us all with her dashing chilli suit and bubbly personality stating that she ‘loves HWG with her whole heart and loves the community’. Mr Pillinger screamed down the field ‘GO FERRERS’ which shows just the kind of house spirt HWG is all about.

AUDLEY Despite us running after Ms Bould (Audley House Leader) a few times, we finally caught her as she gave us a speedy statement before running off saying that ‘House Winter Games is a lovely tradition that can showcase all students talents’ whether that be in sports, the arts or anything niche.’

Netball Netball was filled with high morale and an inclusive team spirit, making sure everyone had a go at playing the position they wanted.

Miss Price, Deputy Head of Stafford, said “Netball is a sport that bring people together through enjoyment and fitness. It has also got a nice team spirit and social aspect.”

Throughout the matches, everyone was rooting for their houses and cheering each other on and Lily, Y11, said that “Ferrers is winning!”, (Ferrers didn’t win)

Russian Scrabble — would you give it a go?

Despite not sounding particularly thrilling to the general audience, it’s a hidden gem among the house winter games activities. Walking inside, it was clear that the community spirit among the students and staff was already alive from the beginning. Students were competing in a friendly but fierce competition to score the most points by creating words using letters from the Cyrillic alphabet. A tricky endeavor indeed! The Scrabbler’s highlights of house winter games were the new friends made and the memories to be cherished for many years to come — something that we think all of WGHS can agree on!

pH Rainbow Challenge Mr To, overseeing the pH Rainbow Challenge, enthusiastically cheers on students,‘The spirits are alive with the sound of chemistry!’

Multiple girls described this challenge as “exhilarating”, and nobody could be bothered to think of any other adjectives. This is science, not English, after all!

Classics: It’s a Classic!

Did you know the phrase ‘spill the beans’ comes from an ancient Greek voting system, where voters would place either a black or white bean in a jar? Spilling the jar’s contents would prematurely expose the voting results.

Students had a blast in this fun-packed session inspired by ancient Greek and Roman mythology. They enjoyed many activities, including designing their own vase, creating their own deity, learning about modern-day sayings that derive from ancient Greece/Rome, and so much more!

The K Pop Quiz

This high energy quiz consisted of multiple rounds, such as ‘guess the lightstick’ and ‘guess the title track’.

Miss Keise, who was running the event, said: “K pop unites us even if we don’t understand the language. It also encourages us to learn.”

The energetic atmosphere was added to by the upbeat K Pop songs playing in the background, as well as the energy from those participating, who said it was “Very fun”.

Guess you could say they were hard at ‘Work’ going ‘All In’ (get it?).

Dungeons and Dragons - a new audience:

Dungeons and Dragons is a game of fairytales and mystique. Players collaborate to create unique characters to live in a magical world, fighting monsters and progressing though the story. In the morning, there was a sense of anticipation for the games to begin, yet also a slight sense of confusion that was swiftly overshadowed by determination to succeed. Of the students we asked, the majority told us that they had no experience with D&D, one student (Satwika - Y11) said to “Always branch out. If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.”, which really embodies our school’s goal to engage in new experiences!

A classic Whodunnit!

Lord Clarence is dead! He’s been murdered in cold blood and it’s up to our top-notch detectives to unveil the truth. A single shoe, a cane, a shovel, what could these all mean? Key suspects patrolled the corridors, free for our detectives to question. Students stated they “believed they could” when referring to being the first to solve this puzzling case, showing the strong sense of teamwork and determination they possessed.

If the police are short of investigators, they should definitely look to recruit our aspiring analysts!

Wellbeing Matters Year 9 Wellbeing Event

Last week our Sixth Form Mental Health Support Team delivered a Wellbeing Event to the Year 9 students. The session covered a variety of topics to support them in making healthy choices.

The afternoon was broken into four, exploring: The impact poor food choices have on how we feel and behave.

Benefits of exercise on our brain function as well as our physical and mental wellbeing.

The importance of sleep on both our cognitive function and our overall health.

Top tips to improve our mental wellbeing, whilst recognising that a degree of stress in everyday life is normal.

During the afternoon coping strategies were shared along with support agency helplines and details.

Base 25 - Wellbeing Hub

Base 25 provide an emotional wellbeing service for young people living or attending school in Wolverhampton. The service work in partnership with CAMHS (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service).​ Referrals can be made through your GP, school or parents/ carers can submit self-referrals using their online form.​Support can also be accessed through the Wellbeing Hub. No referral needed. Young people can drop in and get advice and support from the team (please see details below).

Wellbeing Matters Reflexions

Reflexions provide preventative and early intervention mental health support within education settings for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties.

They work with children and young people who may need support with: Presentations related to anxiety/worry or low mood Sleep difficulties in the context of anxiety or low mood Anxiety/avoidance Panic attacks Parent-led intervention for support with child or young person’s symptoms relating to anxiety Support in understanding emotions and managing relationship with emotions Please see below details of two events that Reflexions will be hosting during the half term break.

Careers Careers & Physical Education Careers are promoted in physical education lessons by exposing students to a wide range of roles within the sport, fitness, and health industry. Examination classes are implicitly taught in topics such as biomechanics, training methods, diet and nutrition, learning theories and commercialisation. Teachers often discuss pathways into jobs such as personal training, physiotherapy, sports management and broadcasting which help students understand the qualifications and training needed. By linking lessons to real-world applications, PE helps students see how their interests in physical activity can lead to future education and career opportunities.

Careers & Mathematics In our mathematics curriculum, we place strong emphasis on helping students understand how mathematical skills and concepts are used in real-life careers. As students learn new topics, we regularly link these to real-world applications and professions. For example, students explore how governments and organisations use sampling and data analysis to create opinion polls, or how percentages and ratios are applied in finance, business, and economics. Across all year groups, lessons highlight how mathematics is used by real people in a wide range of jobs, from engineering and technology to healthcare and research. By making these connections explicit, we help students appreciate the relevance of mathematics and understand the importance of applying what they learn in the classroom to real-life situations.

CAREERS NEWSLETTER

This newsletter provides detailed guidance on the careers learning and support available for students in Years 10 and 11 as they prepare for important decisions about their post-16 pathways.

Introduction to Post-16 Options

At the end of Year 11, students must select a post-16 pathway. There is no single 'best' option — each route provides opportunities for further study, apprenticeships, or employment. Below is a clear explanation of the main pathways available.

A-Levels (Academic Pathway)

A-Levels are subject-based qualifications typically taken as 3 subjects over two years. They suit students who enjoy academic learning, essays, exams, and exploring subjects in depth.

Why choose A-Levels: Ideal for university progression, including competitive courses Flexible subject combinations Best for students who enjoy written work and independent study Examples: A student targeting medicine might choose Biology, Chemistry, and Maths; a student who enjoys humanities could choose History, English, and Sociology.

Apprenticeships (Earn While You Learn)

Apprenticeships allow students to work for an employer while studying for a qualification — and earn a wage at the same time. They range from Level 2 to Degree Apprenticeships.

T-Levels (Technical Pathway)

Why choose an apprenticeship: Gain real work experience No tuition fees Strong progression routes, including degree-level study

Why choose T-Levels: Designed with employers to build technical skills Excellent preparation for apprenticeships, higher technical study, or direct employment Ideal for students who prefer real-world learning

Examples: Business administration, engineering, IT, cyber security, construction, healthcare support.

Note: Apprenticeships are competitive and vacancies are released throughout the year, especially March–August.

T-Levels are two-year, career-focused qualifications equivalent to 3 A-Levels. They include a substantial industry placement of around 45 days. Each course is linked to a specific employment sector.

Examples: Digital Production, Health, Education & Childcare, Engineering, Business Administration.

Vocational Courses (e.g., BTECs, OCR, NCFE)

Vocational qualifications are practical and coursework-focused. They are offered at colleges and some sixth forms. They suit students who prefer hands-on tasks and ongoing assessment rather than exams.

Why choose vocational courses: • Reduced exam pressure • Highly practical, career-focused learning • Accepted by many universities and employers Examples: Health & Social Care, Sport, Public Services, Creative Media, Business, Travel & Tourism.

Year 10 – Preparing for Future Pathways

Introduction to post-16 options including A-Levels, T-Levels, apprenticeships, and vocational courses Work experience preparation and placement search guidance Skills development in CV writing, communication, teamwork, and interview technique Encounters with employers, apprenticeship providers, and local colleges

Year 11 – Making Post-16 Choices

Application support for sixth forms, colleges, and apprenticeship providers Guidance on entry requirements for different pathways Careers interviews with qualified advisors Mock interviews and employer engagement activities

How We Support You and Your Child

We offer careers meetings, and regular updates. Please contact the careers team for guidance or to get involved as an employer volunteer.

The Book Nook The Library was transformed for our House Winter Games event on Tuesday 10th February, where students took part in our Ultimate Werewolf competition - a social deduction game very similar to The Traitors! A very well done to all involved, and congratulations to the overall winner - Paget House.

Also, World Book Day is rapidly approaching. We highly encourage students to come to school on Thursday 5th March dressed as a literary character of their choice - there will also be a costume competition taking place with a prize for the best costume! Students should have also received their £1 book vouchers. These are now active - get out there and get picking those books!

Here are the stats for February so far: As of 12th February, we've had 86 books taken out of the Library. We had a whopping 320 loans during January!

Our most popular book so far has been The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson.
