E-BULLETIN Friday 25 September 2026

The fortnightly newsletter of Wolverhampton Girls' High School

A Message from our Headteacher It has been another busy and positive fortnight at Girls’ High, with plenty happening across our school community. Our House Arts 2026 preparations are well underway, and I know our students and staff have been working incredibly hard behind the scenes. This year’s theme, ‘In the Woods’, promises to be a wonderful celebration of creativity, talent and teamwork. Tickets are now available through School Box Office, and we look forward to welcoming families to what is always a highlight of the school calendar. Thank you also to everyone who contributed to our Harvest Collection. We were delighted by the generosity of our school community, with an excellent collection of food and essential items donated to support those in need. The collection has now been gathered by The Good Shepherd, who will distribute the donations to local people and families. Your kindness makes a real difference. A reminder that school will close at 2.00pm on Wednesday 30 September to allow us to welcome parents and carers into school for our Year 12 Academic Insights and Meet the Tutor parent engagement event. We look forward to meeting with you and strengthening the partnership between home and school as we support our students throughout the year. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our school community. Best Wishes Mrs Young

Finding Your Place Online For many young people, group chats are an important part of their friendships. They can be a great way to stay connected, but conversations can sometimes move quickly or become uncomfortable. This could include pressure to join in, being excluded, unkind comments, unwanted messages, screenshots or conversations that make someone feel uncomfortable. Remind your child that they don't have to respond immediately — and that leaving or muting a conversation is always an option. A useful conversation starter is: “What would you do if a group chat suddenly became uncomfortable?” Most importantly, make sure they know who they can talk to if something doesn't feel right.

House Charities House Charities Announced for 2026-27 Following a fantastic round of house voting, we are pleased to announce the charities that each House will be supporting this year. Thank you to all students who took part in the process and helped choose causes that make a difference locally, nationally and internationally.

Audley House - Macmillan Cancer Support Macmillan provides practical, emotional and financial support to people living with cancer and their families. Their work includes specialist nurses, information services and help with the everyday challenges that cancer can bring.

Ferrers House - Cancer Research UK Cancer Research UK is the world's largest independent cancer research charity. It funds vital research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, helping to improve survival rates and save lives.

Paget House - Women's Aid Women's Aid works to end domestic abuse against women and children. The charity provides life-saving support services, refuges and resources for those experiencing domestic abuse while campaigning for positive change.

Stafford House - Freedom4Girls Freedom4Girls works to tackle period poverty by providing menstrual products to those who cannot afford them. The charity also promotes menstrual education and challenges the stigma surrounding periods both in the UK and internationally.

Whole School Charity - The Haven For our December Non-Uniform Day, we will be supporting The Haven, a local charity that provides support, refuge and outreach services for women and children affected by domestic abuse. The Haven plays a vital role in supporting families across our region and helping them rebuild their lives. We look forward to seeing the creativity, commitment and generosity of each House throughout the year as they raise funds and awareness for these worthy causes. Thank you in advance for supporting our charity events and helping us make a positive difference in our communities.

Run For Her Could your business support Run For Her? As part of our Run For Her fundraising campaign in support of The Haven, we are looking for local businesses and organisations who may be interested in supporting the event through sponsorship. If you own a business, work for a company, or have a connection with an organisation that may be interested in getting involved, we would love to hear from you. Sponsorship could help us make the event even more impactful for our students while raising valuable funds and awareness for The Haven and the important work they do to support women and children affected by domestic abuse. There are a range of ways businesses could get involved, from event sponsorship and donations to providing prizes, resources or other support. If you think your business or workplace could help, please get in touch with Mrs Vitalis (kvitalis@wghs.org.uk) to find out more. Together, we can Run For Her.

Digital Learning at Girls’ High This year our students have access to a range of online learning platforms, chosen to support what they learn in lessons and to help them practise, revise and read more widely at home. The platforms in use this year are:

Sparx Reader - personalised reading practice, matched to each student's reading level Quizlet - flashcards and quick quizzes for learning key vocabulary and facts MASSOLIT - short video lectures from university academics, for GCSE and A level Classroom 42 - short videos, quizzes and exam practice Educake - online science quizzes with instant marking, at Key Stage 3 The EverLearner - video lessons and quizzes for PE at GCSE and A level Your daughter's teachers will explain how to log in to the platforms they use and how they fit with homework. We will also introduce each platform properly in the E-Bulletin over the coming weeks, so you know what it is, who uses it and how you can help at home. We keep this list under review, so one or two further platforms may be added during the year. The best way to find out more in the meantime is to ask your daughter to show you the ones she is using.

Student Success Simran’s Summer Success Congratulations to Year 8 student Simran (Paget house) who over the summer holidays passed her Piano Grade 2 Music Theory Exam with Distinction achieving 74 out of 75. Her family are incredibly proud of her achievement and we know she has worked incredibly hard demonstrating fantastic effort, dedication and commitment. Well Done Simran!

CAREERS AT WGHS At WGHS, we are committed to ensuring that every student is exceptionally well prepared for life beyond school. Through careers education, employer encounters, workplace experiences and meaningful guidance, we aim to broaden horizons, raise aspirations and equip students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed decisions about their futures. This fortnightly bulletin will provide careers news, labour market insights, opportunities for students and families, and updates on how we are developing our careers programme. We hope it also encourages valuable conversations at home about the exciting and evolving world of work.

FUTURE FRONTIERS: MEET DIGIT, THE WAREHOUSE ROBOT A robot called Digit is already working in warehouses, where it can lift, carry and move items alongside human colleagues. Companies such as Amazon have been trialling humanoid robots to support staff with repetitive tasks, allowing employees to focus on more skilled and complex work. [agilityrobotics.com] This is just one example of how technology is transforming the workplace. Similar advances are being seen in healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture and logistics. Whilst robots and artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly capable, experts suggest that the most valuable skills will remain distinctly human: creativity, communication, leadership, ethical judgement, empathy and complex problem-solving. The future workplace is unlikely to be humans or robots. Instead, it is likely to be humans with robots.

Question for discussion at home: If a robot could complete most routine tasks, what skills would make a human employee truly indispensable? Could You Host a WGHS Student for Work Experience? Each year, our Year 10 and Year 12 students take part in work experience placements to develop essential employability skills, increase their career awareness and gain valuable insight into the workplace. We are always looking to expand our network of placement providers and would be grateful to hear from parents, carers, alumni and local employers who may be able to host a student. Hosting a student can: Support the development of a young person's confidence and career aspirations. Introduce students to your industry and workplace. Provide an enthusiastic extra pair of hands for the week. Strengthen links between education and employment within our community. WGHS students are polite, motivated, reliable and consistently receive positive feedback from employers. Please note: placements must take place in person at a workplace location. Unfortunately, remote or work-fromhome placements do not meet the requirements of our work experience programme. If you think you may be able to offer a placement, please complete our brief expression of interest form: Host a WGHS student for work experience Work Experience For Years 10 & 12 takes place 5th - 9th July 2027 Thank you for helping our students gain real-world experience and broaden their career horizons.

Opportunities for Students Interested in Medicine or Dentistry We have recently been made aware of a number of free opportunities from Medic Mentor and Dental Mentor, designed to support students considering careers in medicine or dentistry. These programmes are external to WGHS, and students and families should contact the organisers directly for further information and registration.

FREE GET INTO MEDICINE CONFERENCES

Students aged 14+ can access free online conferences covering: Medical school applications UCAT preparation Choosing medical schools Personal statements Interviews Work experience opportunities Leadership and enrichment programmes

Register here: Medic Mentor

FREE GET INTO DENTISTRY CONFERENCE

Students interested in dentistry can attend a dedicated conference covering: Dental school applications Personal statements Interviews Work experience Career pathways within dentistry

The programme has been developed to support students who may find it difficult to access traditional in-person work experience placements. Students who attend will also receive a certificate of attendance which may be used to demonstrate engagement with higher education and career exploration activities.

Important Information

Please note that these opportunities are organised and managed by Medic Mentor / Dental Mentor. WGHS is sharing this information for the benefit of students and families, but all enquiries, registrations and participation arrangements should be made directly with the provider. Students and parents/carers are encouraged to review the information provided by Medic Mentor and Dental Mentor directly before registering.
