A Season for Giving Thanks

N

ovember is a time for reflection and remembering those things we are thankful for.

During this season of thanksgiving, I am so thankful to say that the cooperative has had a very safe year. In fact, West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) has worked over 575 days without a lost-time accident.

Our industry, in particular line work, is listed as one of the 10 most dangerous jobs in the United States. This is understandable as our linemen Derek Chadwell, Interim EVP & CEO perform detailed tasks near high-voltage power lines. They also work in challenging weather conditions and alongside roadways, which can be especially dangerous. Linecrews also experience increased dangers while helping with storm restoration efforts in unfamiliar areas – this can be from debris or other hazards like flooding or ice caused by the storm itself. WFEC recently sent two crews of 14 employees to help with power restoration after Hurricane Ian. I am thankful to say those workers returned home safely. I also want to thank them for being willing to take time away from their families to assist those in need, much like many of those co-op employs did for us four years ago.

We are fortunate to have highly skilled professionals working at all levels of the cooperative. Our member services representatives are always standing by to take your calls and answer your questions, our information technology (IT) experts continuously monitor our system to help safeguard sensitive data, and our engineers and operations employees provide ongoing expertise and guidance on the operations side of the co-op. Our skilled mechanics keep our fleet of vehicles and equipment running so that we may serve our members efficiently. Join me in thanking all the co-op’s employees for their dedication and exceptional commitment to providing superb service to our members.

I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to you – our members. Our industry is facing challenges with the ever-rising costs for the materials, goods, and services necessary to keep the lights on. We are also experiencing an unprecedented period of rising fuel costs that are out of our control. Please know that we are planning ahead and doing all we can to keep our rates as stable as possible. We are striving to keep electricity a good value. It is always our mission as your member-owned, not-for-profit electric co-op, continued on page 4

I am also thankful for my family and my work family. I have been blessed with a very loving and supportive family and I could not ask for better coworkers than I have at WFEC. They are always willing to support one another in times of trial, sadness or need, support community events, coach local teams, volunteer with local organizations, or step in when other co-ops or co-op employees are in need of our assistance.

At WFEC, we are grateful to have veterans within our ranks, and we are proud to serve veterans and their families within our local community. We care for the veteran community and show our appreciation through our actions and ongoing commitment to them and their families. We are proud to partner with local charitable and business organizations that support veterans and recognize their sacrifices, such as National Wreaths Across America Day, which will take place December 17, 2022. At the national level, we support the Vets Power Us program, which is aimed at employing and honoring veterans, active military and their spouses. This effort helps veterans understand potential career paths with electric co-ops and in turn,

provides co-ops with best practices in attracting, onboarding, and retaining veterans. WFEC is proud to employ six veterans at this time.

We are also very thankful for the brave men and women who selflessly serve our country, now and in the past, so that we can enjoy the freedoms their service affords us. Please join us in pausing to reflect on the sacrifices made by our nation’s veterans. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

f you have or see an outdoor light that is not working on WFEC’s system, please contact the cooperative to report it. When reporting a problem, please provide the information listed below, so that we can make the repair and contact you if necessary.

Text Power

• Provide the member account number or meter number, just like when reporting a power outage. Some members have multiple yard lights – members may be asked where the light is located on the property.

• Describe the nature of the problem; such as light is blinking, bulb is burned out, etc.

• Provide contact information such as the name, address, email address, or phone number of the person reporting the outdoor light so that they can be contacted if needed. Providing as much information as possible will help ensure the proper response to your request.

To report a broken or malfunctioning outdoor light, contact WFEC at 800-342-7400 or call your local district office during normal business hours.

If you experience any other types of damage at your home - such as leaning poles, broken meter bases/meters, damaged surge equipment or other related items, please contact the cooperative.

Call (800) 342-7400 or your local district office An outdoor light on your property can provide a sense of security & keep you from fumbling for your keys in the dark. However, these benefits can’t be realized if a light is inoperative. If you’re aware of a malfunctioning light on our lines, let us know.

Simply inform us of the location, and we’ll make sure it’s repaired.

Youth Tour (YT) is an annual contest sponsored by WFEC that gives high school juniors the opportunity to compete for a FREE week-long trip to Washington, D.C. Everyone who participates in WFEC’s Youth Tour program will earn a trip to our state's capital for two days.

Please Note: Youth Tour and its scholarship program will see some changes and updates this year. Look for important announcements about WFEC's new scholarship program soon!

lectricity flows to and from your home through power lines. You know that part. Occasionally, something comes into contact with a line and interrupts this flow. That’s what we call a “fault,” and they can be caused by a variety of things, from tree branches touching a line, to lightning strikes, or small animals or birds making contact with energized lines.

If a fault occurs, you may also experience a power blink that lasts a few seconds, or just long enough for your microwave’s clock to give up on life. These blinks are the result of protective devices, such as reclosers and cutouts, working like they should to prevent prolonged outages.

When reclosers and cutouts detect a fault on a line, they’ll open connectivity for a few seconds, or in other words, stop the flow of electricity to the point where the fault is in hopes the problem will clear itself. If the fault doesn’t go away the first time, the reclosers will repeat the process two more times before opening permanently, which limits the impact of the outage. This opening and closing is what causes power to blink. Without these blinks, every tree limb or critter coming into contact with a power line would cause a lengthy and widespread outage.

Of course, if you’re experiencing continuous power blinks at your home, there might be a more serious issue. The equipment that delivers your electricity might be in need of repair, or your transformer might be overloaded, so it’s a good idea to give us a call and let us know.

Follow these tips: 1. Give it a minute. If you experience a power blink, there’s no need to report it to us immediately.

Reclosers or cutouts might be operating nearby, in which case, you may experience a few blinks before the issue clears itself, or power goes out completely.

2. Let us know if the blinks don’t stop. If you’re experiencing continuous power blinks at your house, or if your lights are frequently dimming, that needs our attention.

There might be damage to the lines or other equipment that bring power to your home, or there could be vegetation in need of clearing. Please call our main office and make us aware of the issue, and don’t try to handle it on your own. Remember, it’s our job to put ourselves on the line so you don’t have to.

3. You can help ease the effects.

You can reduce the frustration of blinks by making sure your important electronic devices have battery backups. This is especially true for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors that are connected to your home’s wiring. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can also help minimize the effects of power blinks on computers and laptops.

Your Safety at Home Matters

ost people know electricity must be treated with respect to avoid danger. But many members don’t realize that home electrical fires account for more than 50,000 fires each year in North America alone. That’s according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). It also reports those fires cause “nearly 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage.”

Those numbers are alarming. An equally distressing fact is these deaths, injuries and damages could probably have been prevented by homeowners’ awareness and easy actions.

It’s a good practice to be on the lookout for electrical dangers around your home. Dimming or flickering lights and tripping circuit breakers may be signs of an issue. Burning odors or buzzing or sizzling sounds can also alert you to electrical hazards. Additional indications of an electrical safety issue include outlets or switches that feel warm to the touch and burn marks or discoloration around a fixture, socket or plug.

Lowering your risk of an electrical fire may be as simple as throwing away damaged electrical cords, knowing how to properly use space heaters and being careful not to overload power strips. Replacing a faulty electrical receptacle can also help protect your family and home. ESFI reports that faulty receptacles are involved in 5,300 fires, 40 deaths and more than 100 injuries annually.

Changing the batteries in your smoke alarms annually is another simple but lifesaving action you can take. Of all home fire deaths, a reported 65 percent occur in homes with no working smoke detectors. Keeping an

appropriately rated fire extinguisher in a convenient location could mean the difference between life and death.

You may also want to hire a licensed electrician to inspect your home’s electrical system and correct any related safety issues. This extra precaution could protect you from serious or deadly harm.

Home fire accidents can still happen, no matter how careful you are. Be sure you have an emergency plan beforehand that includes ways to escape. Familiarize everyone who lives in your home with the plan, and in the event of a fire, get out of the home as quickly and safely as possible. e all have our favorite season. Some people love crisp, cool weather and bundling up under a favorite blanket, while others prefer the warm temperatures summer brings and all of the fun outdoor activities that go with it.

But there’s one thing we can all agree on: high winter bills are never fun.

West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) is here to help you find ways to manage your home energy use and keep winter bills in check.

Here are five tips to help increase your home’s energy efficiency this winter:

Your Safety at Home Matters

M

ost people know electricity must be treated with respect to avoid danger. But many members don’t realize that home electrical fires account for more than 50,000 fires each year in North America alone. That’s according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). It also reports those fires cause “nearly 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage.”

Those numbers are alarming. An equally distressing fact is these deaths, injuries and damages could probably have been prevented by homeowners’ awareness and easy actions.

It’s a good practice to be on the lookout for electrical dangers around your home. Dimming or flickering lights and tripping circuit breakers may be signs of an issue. Burning odors or buzzing or sizzling sounds can also alert you to electrical hazards. Additional indications of an electrical safety issue include outlets or switches that feel warm to the touch and burn marks or discoloration around a fixture, socket or plug.

Lowering your risk of an electrical fire may be as simple as throwing away damaged electrical cords, knowing how to properly use space heaters and being careful not to overload power strips. Replacing a faulty electrical receptacle can also help protect your family and home. ESFI reports that faulty receptacles are involved in 5,300 fires, 40 deaths and more than 100 injuries annually.

Changing the batteries in your smoke alarms annually is another simple but lifesaving action you can take. Of all home fire deaths, a reported 65 percent occur in homes with no working smoke detectors. Keeping an

appropriately rated fire extinguisher in a convenient location could mean the difference between life and death.

You may also want to hire a licensed electrician to inspect your home’s electrical system and correct any related safety issues. This extra precaution could protect you from serious or deadly harm.

Home fire accidents can still happen, no matter how careful you are. Be sure you have an emergency plan beforehand that includes ways to escape. Familiarize everyone who lives in your home with the plan, and in the event of a fire, get out of the home as quickly and safely as possible. Then, call 9-1-1 and do not go back into the home until the fire department says it is safe to do so.

lectricity flows to and from your home through power lines. You know that part. Occasionally, something comes into contact with a line and interrupts this flow. That’s what we call a “fault,” and they can be caused by a variety of things, from tree branches touching a line, to lightning strikes, or small animals or birds making contact with energized lines.

If a fault occurs, you may also experience a power blink that lasts a few seconds, or just long enough for your microwave’s clock to give up on life. These blinks are the result of protective devices, such as reclosers and cutouts, working like they should to prevent prolonged outages.

When reclosers and cutouts detect a fault on a line, they’ll open connectivity for a few seconds, or in other words, stop the flow of electricity to the point where the fault is in hopes the problem will clear itself. If the fault doesn’t go away the first time, the reclosers will repeat the process two more times before opening permanently, which limits the impact of the outage. This opening and closing is what causes power to blink. Without these blinks, every tree limb or critter coming into contact with a power line would cause a lengthy and widespread outage.

Of course, if you’re experiencing continuous power blinks at your home, there might be a more serious issue. The equipment that delivers your electricity might be in need of repair, or your transformer might be overloaded, so it’s a good idea to give us a call and let us know.

Follow these tips: 1. Give it a minute. If you experience a power blink, there’s no need to report it to us immediately.

Reclosers or cutouts might be operating nearby, in which case, you may experience a few blinks before the issue clears itself, or power goes out completely.

2. Let us know if the blinks don’t stop. If you’re experiencing continuous power blinks at your house, or if your lights are frequently dimming, that needs our attention.

There might be damage to the lines or other equipment that bring power to your home, or there could be vegetation in need of clearing. Please call our main office and make us aware of the issue, and don’t try to handle it on your own. Remember, it’s our job to put ourselves on the line so you don’t have to.

3. You can help ease the effects.

You can reduce the frustration of blinks by making sure your important electronic devices have battery backups. This is especially true for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors that are connected to your home’s wiring. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can also help minimize the effects of power blinks on computers and laptops.

f you have or see an outdoor light that is not working on WFEC’s system, please contact the cooperative to report it. When reporting a problem, please provide the information listed below, so that we can make the repair and contact you if necessary.

Text Power

• Provide the member account number or meter number, just like when reporting a power outage. Some members have multiple yard lights – members may be asked where the light is located on the property.

• Describe the nature of the problem; such as light is blinking, bulb is burned out, etc.

• Provide contact information such as the name, address, email address, or phone number of the person reporting the outdoor light so that they can be contacted if needed. Providing as much information as possible will help ensure the proper response to your request.

To report a broken or malfunctioning outdoor light, contact WFEC at 800-342-7400 or call your local district office during normal business hours.

If you experience any other types of damage at your home - such as leaning poles, broken meter bases/meters, damaged surge equipment or other related items, please contact the cooperative.

A Season for Giving Thanks

N

ovember is a time for reflection and remembering those things we are thankful for.

During this season of thanksgiving, I am so thankful to say that the cooperative has had a very safe year. In fact, West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) has worked over 575 days without a lost-time accident.

Our industry, in particular line work, is listed as one of the 10 most dangerous jobs in the United States. This is understandable as our linemen Derek Chadwell, Interim EVP & CEO perform detailed tasks near high-voltage power lines. They also work in challenging weather conditions and alongside roadways, which can be especially dangerous. Linecrews also experience increased dangers while helping with storm restoration efforts in unfamiliar areas – this can be from debris or other hazards like flooding or ice caused by the storm itself. WFEC recently sent two crews of 14 employees to help with power restoration after Hurricane Ian. I am thankful to say those workers returned home safely. I also want to thank them for being willing to take time away from their families to assist those in need, much like many of those co-op employs did for us four years ago.

We are fortunate to have highly skilled professionals working at all levels of the cooperative. Our member services representatives are always standing by to take your calls and answer your questions, our information technology (IT) experts continuously monitor our system to help safeguard sensitive data, and our engineers and operations employees provide ongoing expertise and guidance on the operations side of the co-op. Our skilled mechanics keep our fleet of vehicles and equipment running so that we may serve our members efficiently. Join me in thanking all the co-op’s employees for their dedication and exceptional commitment to providing superb service to our members.

I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to you – our members. Our industry is facing challenges with the ever-rising costs for the materials, goods, and services necessary to keep the lights on. We are also experiencing an unprecedented period of rising fuel costs that are out of our control. Please know that we are planning ahead and doing all we can to keep our rates as stable as possible.
