Feltman Receives SLIM Award CLASSIFIEDS

lark Feltman, an apprentice lineman in the Sneads district graduated from Southeast Lineman Training Center (SLTC) in Trenton, Georgia in April.

"I learned a lot at SLTC - it was fun to meet new people and learn about the job. Learning in a classroom setting was great - overall, it was an invaluable experience. But, to me, the biggest thing I learned was how and why to do things safely. I feel like they did a good job of teaching us how to be safe before we did the work," said Feltman.

Upon his graduation from SLTC, he was awarded the SLIM award.

This prestigious trophy is awarded to the top student from each graduating class. Feltman was chosen to receive this honor over 202 other students.

The award is granted based on classroom scores, ability to perform different physical tasks, such as climbing, and the efforts displayed towards helping others in his pole circle. Here’s a little more background about SLIM and why it is used as an award at SLTC: In 1934, William Wister Haines, a 24-year-old lineman ceased his employment for a while, holed-up and wrote a book about the adventures Black Angus brood stock bull, of a young lineman breaking into the trade. That book, SLIM, become a pure breed, 4-years-old, weighs national best seller, enjoyed by thousands of readers who knew nothing about linework. It was just a great story and could only have been written approximately 2,000 lbs., by someone who had lived linework. Warner Brothers purchased the rights $2,000; jack mule, gentle w/ to the movie, hired Haines to write the screenplay, help with technical children, $150; 209-3259. direction and arranged for Henry Fonda to play the title character.

William Wister Haines experienced the life of a “boomer” from 1926AKC registered Doberman, 1930, then did catenary work on the Pennsylvania Railroad for three years. Only a man who started as a grunt, dreamed of putting on the gaffs, 1-year-old, very friendly & climbed poles and towers, worked in ice, hail and snow, and survived playful, $750; call or text linework’s everyday dangers could describe the life of a lineman so well that 307-7428. his thoughts and words would ring true nearly a century later.

In 2009, Bill Haines, Jr., son of the author, republished 250 copies of SURVEYOR the book and they sold out within four days! “Slim sets an example-he’s the lineman who is totally dedicated to the trade, to the process of continuous learning, being the best possible lineman and above all, to safety. While the book was written about line work in the 20s, these principles remain paramount. The illustrations by Robert Lawson, of work in those early days, are fantastic,” said Haines.

The last publication of the book was over 50 years before its second publication and old grainy copies of the movie had become treasures.

Generations had been skipped and linemen had no way to know that the movie came from an exciting, powerful novel.

“A personal copy of the book is one that a young lineman can treasure forever-a symbol that he succeeded with years of rigorous training and is headed for a meaningful, challenging career,” said Haines.

When asked how he felt when he was selected to receive the SLIM Award, Feltman said, "It was probably one of the best feelings I've ever had.

It's a great accomplishment for me and I was at a loss for words."

n March of this year, West Florida Electric Cooperative retired capital credits to members in its four-county service area in the amount of $823,378.06.

Because we are a cooperative and not-for-profit, any funds left over after bills have been paid go into a capital credits account for each co-op member. Then, as your board of trustees determines the co-op is in good financial shape, this capital is paid to the members.

Capital credit refunds are to you (our members) what dividends are to stockholders at for-profit companies, a return of capital. Our goal is to provide you with electricity at a price that is as close to cost as possible. That way, more of your money stays in your pocket up front.

This year, those who were members during the final six months of 1992 and the first six months of 1993 received capital credits through a check in the mail – approximately 8,982 checks were sent this year. This reflects the member’s investment in the cooperative being Joe Rone, President, Board of Trustees returned on a 25 year rotation.

Over the years, those funds have helped us keep our rates reasonable, reduced the amount of money we needed to borrow from outside lenders and helped build, maintain and expand a reliable electric distribution system.

We are pleased to be able to return capital to our members. As we are celebrating our 81st year of operation this year, we have returned 56 years of accumulated capital credits.

In this issue of the Current Light Flashes (CLF), you will find a list of unclaimed capital credits. Checks were Russell Dunaway, EVP & CEO mailed to these individuals, but 745 of those were returned to the cooperative.

In an effort to find them, the co-op is publishing their names in our publication and on our website. If your name is listed in that section of the CLF, please contact the cooperative to verify ownership and provide your current mailing address. If you believe you know the current address of someone on the list, we would greatly appreciate you asking them to contact us by calling 800.342.7400.

Ways to Save (Even on Vacation)

Here are some savings ideas: • Set your AC thermostat to 80 degrees.

• Turn off all ceiling fans – remember, fans cool people, but not rooms.

• Turn your water heater off. These appliances are insulated to keep the water temperature warm. Most of them do not take more than 20 minutes to reheat water.

• Make sure all unnecessary appliances are turned off or unplugged.

• Close your blinds to keep direct sunlight from heating your home.

can be treacherous to travel. Fortunately, these major roadways are in place and available to use as exits to the north, if needed.

Though there isn’t a major interstate system going north in our immediate area, much progress has been made with work to widen and add lanes to Highways 77 and 79. This roadwork will pay dividends in the future, as it will be very beneficial for evacuations during a major storm in our area.

Just as our line crews were involved in restoration efforts during Hurricane Irma, they have also been involved in these major road projects by relocating and building lines that needed to be moved due to the widening of both of these major northern thoroughfares. The relocation and rebuilding of lines like this have taken crews approximately two months per mile of line needing to be moved. The prolonged time frame for construction was because crews had to build new lines and remove the old ones while keeping the current members’ services energized.

So far, crews have moved approximately 6.6 miles of line on Hwy. 77 and there will be approximately 2.4 additional miles to be relocated when the road is widened through Wausau. On the other hand, WFEC hasn’t been required to move as much line for the widening of Hwy. 79 – the co-op has only moved about one mile so far because most of this roadway runs adjacent to Gulf Power lines. As these roads throughout our area are upgraded and improved, they will be easier to negotiate during storm season if evacuations are necessary. 32744001 The Atlantic Hurricane season started on June 1 and will last through November 30. We’d like to stress the importance of staying alert and aware during this and every storm season. It’s important to be prepared before the storm hits and ready to evacuate should it head our way. We know that predicting Mother Nature is a difficult thing to do, as evidenced by Hurricane Irma’s drastically changing trajectory last year, but preparedness is the key. Being prepared to evacuate your home will help prevent major financial headaches down the road. Here are some steps to take before disaster strikes: • Fuel vehicles completely.

• Make an itemized list of belongings, including costs, purchase dates & serial numbers. Attach receipts, especially for big ticket items.

Insurance companies may require proof of the cost of any item for which you make a claim. Dated photographs or videotapes of possessions are also good ideas.

• Take copies of any legal, financial & medical documents. Include bank statements, insurance policies, mortgage information, credit card addresses and toll-free phone numbers, wills, birth certificates, passports & medical prescriptions.

• Know your insurance company. Write down the names of agents & insurance companies, your policy numbers & telephone numbers to

• Do you have enough credit? Keep & protect a credit card with an available balance of at least $1,000. Use credit cards to finance minimal repairs when necessary. Document all transactions.

• Pay bills by phone or online before a disaster hits, even if they aren’t yet due. Hurricanes could interrupt phone service, causing you to miss payments & incur late charges. If you pay by mail, send payments as soon as possible. The U.S. Postal Service will not pick up mail within 24 hours of a hurricane strike. Keep copies of all payments mailed within three days of a natural disaster, if possible. After a storm, contact those you’ve sent payments to & confirm they have received them.

• How can you safeguard your records? Keep insurance/financial papers in secure & accessible places like safe deposit boxes, or with a relative or friend. Include insurance policies, inventory records, agent/company phone numbers for reporting claims, mortgage & other loan contracts & payment records. You might need quick access to this information.

Just as our line crews were involved in restoration efforts during Hurricane Irma, they have also been involved in these major road projects by relocating and building lines that needed to be moved due to the widening of both of these major northern thoroughfares. The relocation and rebuilding of lines like this have taken crews approximately two months per mile of line needing to be moved. The prolonged time frame for construction was because crews had to build new lines and remove the old ones while keeping the current members’ services energized.

So far, crews have moved approximately 6.6 miles of line on Hwy. 77 and there will be approximately 2.4 additional miles to be relocated when the road is widened through Wausau. On the other hand, WFEC hasn’t been required to move as much line for the widening of Hwy. 79 – the co-op has only moved about one mile so far because most of this roadway runs adjacent to Gulf Power lines. As these roads throughout our area are upgraded and improved, they will be easier to negotiate during storm season if evacuations are necessary. 32744001 The Atlantic Hurricane season started on June 1 and will last through November 30. We’d like to stress the importance of staying alert and aware during this and every storm season. It’s important to be prepared before the storm hits and ready to evacuate should it head our way. We know that predicting Mother Nature is a difficult thing to do, as evidenced by Hurricane Irma’s drastically changing trajectory last year, but preparedness is the key. Being prepared to evacuate your home will help prevent major financial headaches down the road. Here are some steps to take before disaster strikes: • Fuel vehicles completely.

• Make an itemized list of belongings, including costs, purchase dates & serial numbers. Attach receipts, especially for big ticket items.

Insurance companies may require proof of the cost of any item for which you make a claim. Dated photographs or videotapes of possessions are also good ideas.

• Take copies of any legal, financial & medical documents. Include bank statements, insurance policies, mortgage information, credit card addresses and toll-free phone numbers, wills, birth certificates, passports & medical prescriptions.

• Know your insurance company. Write down the names of agents & insurance companies, your policy numbers & telephone numbers to

• Do you have enough credit? Keep & protect a credit card with an available balance of at least $1,000. Use credit cards to finance minimal repairs when necessary. Document all transactions.

• Pay bills by phone or online before a disaster hits, even if they aren’t yet due. Hurricanes could interrupt phone service, causing you to miss payments & incur late charges. If you pay by mail, send payments as soon as possible. The U.S. Postal Service will not pick up mail within 24 hours of a hurricane strike. Keep copies of all payments mailed within three days of a natural disaster, if possible. After a storm, contact those you’ve sent payments to & confirm they have received them.

• How can you safeguard your records? Keep insurance/financial papers in secure & accessible places like safe deposit boxes, or with a relative or friend. Include insurance policies, inventory records, agent/company phone numbers for reporting claims, mortgage & other loan contracts & payment records. You might need quick access to this information.

If you believe an electrical drowning is occurring, immediately turn off all power, throw a life ring to the person and call 911. Do not enter the water, as it could still be electrified.

Ways to Save (Even on Vacation)

Here are some savings ideas: • Set your AC thermostat to 80 degrees.

• Turn off all ceiling fans – remember, fans cool people, but not rooms.

• Turn your water heater off. These appliances are insulated to keep the water temperature warm. Most of them do not take more than 20 minutes to reheat water.

• Make sure all unnecessary appliances are turned off or unplugged.

• Close your blinds to keep direct sunlight from heating your home.

It’s not only important to conserve energy and money during that vacation, it is also important to implement some safety measures if you happen to be out of town. n March of this year, West Florida Electric Cooperative retired capital credits to members in its four-county service area in the amount of $823,378.06.

Because we are a cooperative and not-for-profit, any funds left over after bills have been paid go into a capital credits account for each co-op member. Then, as your board of trustees determines the co-op is in good financial shape, this capital is paid to the members.

Capital credit refunds are to you (our members) what dividends are to stockholders at for-profit companies, a return of capital. Our goal is to provide you with electricity at a price that is as close to cost as possible. That way, more of your money stays in your pocket up front.

This year, those who were members during the final six months of 1992 and the first six months of 1993 received capital credits through a check in the mail – approximately 8,982 checks were sent this year. This reflects the member’s investment in the cooperative being Joe Rone, President, Board of Trustees returned on a 25 year rotation.

Over the years, those funds have helped us keep our rates reasonable, reduced the amount of money we needed to borrow from outside lenders and helped build, maintain and expand a reliable electric distribution system.

We are pleased to be able to return capital to our members. As we are celebrating our 81st year of operation this year, we have returned 56 years of accumulated capital credits.

In this issue of the Current Light Flashes (CLF), you will find a list of unclaimed capital credits. Checks were Russell Dunaway, EVP & CEO mailed to these individuals, but 745 of those were returned to the cooperative.

In an effort to find them, the co-op is publishing their names in our publication and on our website. If your name is listed in that section of the CLF, please contact the cooperative to verify ownership and provide your current mailing address. If you believe you know the current address of someone on the list, we would greatly appreciate you asking them to contact us by calling 800.342.7400.

Here’s a little more background about SLIM and why it is used as an award at SLTC: In 1934, William Wister Haines, a 24-year-old lineman ceased his employment for a while, holed-up and wrote a book about the adventures Black Angus brood stock bull, of a young lineman breaking into the trade. That book, SLIM, become a pure breed, 4-years-old, weighs national best seller, enjoyed by thousands of readers who knew nothing about linework. It was just a great story and could only have been written approximately 2,000 lbs., by someone who had lived linework. Warner Brothers purchased the rights $2,000; jack mule, gentle w/ to the movie, hired Haines to write the screenplay, help with technical children, $150; 209-3259. direction and arranged for Henry Fonda to play the title character.

William Wister Haines experienced the life of a “boomer” from 1926AKC registered Doberman, 1930, then did catenary work on the Pennsylvania Railroad for three years. Only a man who started as a grunt, dreamed of putting on the gaffs, 1-year-old, very friendly & climbed poles and towers, worked in ice, hail and snow, and survived playful, $750; call or text linework’s everyday dangers could describe the life of a lineman so well that 307-7428. his thoughts and words would ring true nearly a century later.

In 2009, Bill Haines, Jr., son of the author, republished 250 copies of SURVEYOR the book and they sold out within four days! Once the book became Florida Licensed Surveyor since 1969 available, several organizations began using copies of the novel as Roger Lonsway awards - for topping out (achieving the highest level of expertise a Home Office: 638-7412 Mobile: 260-5438 lineman can attain), prizes at rodeos and Southeast Lineman Training Center’s “Slim the Lineman - William Wister Haines” award.

“Slim sets an example-he’s the lineman who is totally dedicated to the trade, to the process of continuous learning, being the best possible lineman and above all, to safety. While the book was written about line work in the 20s, these principles remain paramount. The illustrations by Robert Lawson, of work in those early days, are fantastic,” said Haines.

The last publication of the book was over 50 years before its second publication and old grainy copies of the movie had become treasures.

Generations had been skipped and linemen had no way to know that the movie came from an exciting, powerful novel.

“A personal copy of the book is one that a young lineman can treasure forever-a symbol that he succeeded with years of rigorous training and is headed for a meaningful, challenging career,” said Haines.

When asked how he felt when he was selected to receive the SLIM Award, Feltman said, "It was probably one of the best feelings I've ever had.

It's a great accomplishment for me and I was at a loss for words."

Feltman Receives SLIM Award CLASSIFIEDS

lark Feltman, an apprentice lineman in the Sneads district graduated from Southeast Lineman Training Center (SLTC) in Trenton, Georgia in April.

"I learned a lot at SLTC - it was fun to meet new people and learn about the job. Learning in a classroom setting was great - overall, it was an invaluable experience. But, to me, the biggest thing I learned was how and why to do things safely. I feel like they did a good job of teaching us how to be safe before we did the work," said Feltman.

Upon his graduation from SLTC, he was awarded the SLIM award.

This prestigious trophy is awarded to the top student from each graduating class. Feltman was chosen to receive this honor over 202 other students.

The award is granted based on classroom scores, ability to perform different physical tasks, such as climbing, and the efforts displayed towards helping others in his pole circle.
