Electric shock drowning can occur in any location where electricity is provided near water but the majority of ESD deaths have occurred in public and private marinas and docks. Unfortunately, t’s sweet summertime and that means it's time to take the boat out, the typical victim of electric shock go to the lake and enjoy the cool, clear water. ESD is a silent killer because there is no visible warning or way to tell if the water surrounding a boat, marina or dock is energized – or if it could become energized quickly with fatal levels of electricity. In most cases, victims do not immediately feel current when they enter or swim in the water around a marina or dock, which gives the victims the false impression that it is “safe” to swim.

Electricity usually enters the water when an electrical fault occurs aboard a nearby boat. And, most of the time this fault is intermittent. A fault may occur only when a light switch is turned on or other electrical device aboard the vessel cycles on. The water can appear and feel perfectly safe, but become energized with deadly electricity in a split second.

What can we do to prevent electric shock drowning?

• Never swim in or near marinas, docks or boatyards.

• Tell others about the dangers of ESD. Most people have never heard of it and are unaware of the danger.

• If you are a boat owner, have your boat inspected by an electrician with current American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Electrical Certification or by an ABYC Certified Technician. Boats with alternating current (AC) systems should have isolation transformers or equipment leakage circuit interrupter (ELCI) protection, comply with ABYC standards and should be serviced by an ABYC Certified Technician.

• Talk to marina owners and operators about the danger of ESD and ask them to install GFCI’s on all shore power pedestals and on all marina wiring circuits. Also ask if they are having their marinas regularly inspected by qualified electricians.

This summer, enjoy your boat, the water and all the recreational opportunities Florida has to offer – just remain aware of the possible dangers that could be hidden just beneath the surface of that cold, clear water.

Don't Risk Your Life for Convenience

torm season is officially here, and as we learned last hurricane season, we could see extended power outages should a major storm hit our area. Many members have purchased generators for stand-by power which are very useful and convenient during those extended outages.

However, if these generators are used improperly, it can be a hazard to you, your home and those working to restore your power. Electrocution, fire and carbon monoxide poisoning are all potential hazards associated with the use of a generator. Back-feeding is also another very dangerous condition caused when a portable generator is not connected properly.

Back-feed is a dangerous electric current that can electrocute or critically injure you or others. During an outage back-feed into power lines could create an energized power line. Linemen who expect this line to be deenergized could be severely injured. One good way to avoid back-feeding is to install a double-pole, double-throw transfer switch. A qualified electrical contractor can install this transfer switch so that a dangerous situation can be avoided.

Here are some additional safety tips that will help keep you and your family safe from carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock, fires and property damage.

1. Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring without an appropriate transfer/ disconnect switch installed. This can cause back-feeding along power lines and electrocute anyone coming in contact with them, including line workers making repairs.

o-it-yourself (DIY) projects are a great way to save money. They can also be extremely rewarding. There’s a sense of pride that comes from accomplishing a job yourself.

Many electrical projects fall into the DIY category. Projects like installing ceiling fans, lighting fixtures or appliances are fairly easy and do not require a large investment in tools. Before you begin your project, here are a few DIY tips to keep you S-A-F-E. Know your limitations. The first rule of DIY safety is this: don’t do it yourself if you aren’t qualified for the job. Unless you are familiar with the basics of electrical wiring, turn electrical projects over to a licensed electrician. As they say, it’s better to be safe than sorry—and keeping you safe is our primary goal.

Turn off the power. Even 120 volts can be deadly. Always turn off the power to the circuit that you will be working on. To do this, locate your main service panel and turn off the circuit breaker. It’s also a good idea to take some time and label all the breakers so you can identify them quickly.

Remember, there are wires behind those walls.

Even if you’re not working on an electrical project, you need to keep electrical safety in mind. Before you cut or drill into a wall or ceiling, be conscious of how deep you’re cutting or drilling to avoid hitting wires. Even if you have the circuit turned off, cutting into wires can create a fire hazard when you turn the power back on.

Use GFCI protectors if you’re going to be using extension cords. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) are devices designed to protect you from electrical shock. When using extension cords, use a

GFCI outlet or GFCI whip, a short extension cord with a built-in GFCI protector. These aren’t expensive, and they can save your life.

In addition to turning off circuits and using GFCI protectors, here are a few more precautions you can take to prevent injury.

• Wear gloves and safety glasses.

• Use tools with insulated grips when working on electrical projects.

torm season is officially here, and as we learned last hurricane season, we could see extended power outages should a major storm hit our area. Many members have purchased generators for stand-by power which are very useful and convenient during those extended outages.

However, if these generators are used improperly, it can be a hazard to you, your home and those working to restore your power. Electrocution, fire and carbon monoxide poisoning are all potential hazards associated with the use of a generator. Back-feeding is also another very dangerous condition caused when a portable generator is not connected properly.

Back-feed is a dangerous electric current that can electrocute or critically injure you or others. During an outage back-feed into power lines could create an energized power line. Linemen who expect this line to be deenergized could be severely injured. One good way to avoid back-feeding is to install a double-pole, double-throw transfer switch. A qualified electrical contractor can install this transfer switch so that a dangerous situation can be avoided.

Here are some additional safety tips that will help keep you and your family safe from carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock, fires and property damage.

1. Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring without an appropriate transfer/ disconnect switch installed. This can cause back-feeding along power lines and electrocute anyone coming in contact with them, including line workers making repairs.

o-it-yourself (DIY) projects are a great way to save money. They can also be extremely rewarding. There’s a sense of pride that comes from accomplishing a job yourself.

Many electrical projects fall into the DIY category. Projects like installing ceiling fans, lighting fixtures or appliances are fairly easy and do not require a large investment in tools. Before you begin your project, here are a few DIY tips to keep you S-A-F-E. Know your limitations. The first rule of DIY safety is this: don’t do it yourself if you aren’t qualified for the job. Unless you are familiar with the basics of electrical wiring, turn electrical projects over to a licensed electrician. As they say, it’s better to be safe than sorry—and keeping you safe is our primary goal.

Turn off the power. Even 120 volts can be deadly. Always turn off the power to the circuit that you will be working on. To do this, locate your main service panel and turn off the circuit breaker. It’s also a good idea to take some time and label all the breakers so you can identify them quickly.

Remember, there are wires behind those walls.

Even if you’re not working on an electrical project, you need to keep electrical safety in mind. Before you cut or drill into a wall or ceiling, be conscious of how deep you’re cutting or drilling to avoid hitting wires. Even if you have the circuit turned off, cutting into wires can create a fire hazard when you turn the power back on.

Use GFCI protectors if you’re going to be using extension cords. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) are devices designed to protect you from electrical shock. When using extension cords, use a

3. Never operate the generator in enclosed spaces. Use carbon monoxide detectors in nearby enclosed spaces to monitor levels, as generators can produce high levels of carbon monoxide very quickly. This can be deadly.

4. Use heavy-duty, outdoorrated extension cords. Make sure extension cords are free of cuts or tears and the plug has all continued on page 9 three prongs.

GFCI outlet or GFCI whip, a short extension cord with a built-in GFCI protector. These aren’t expensive, and they can save your life.

In addition to turning off circuits and using GFCI protectors, here are a few more precautions you can take to prevent injury.

ESD is a silent killer because there is no visible warning or way to tell if the water surrounding a boat, marina or dock is energized – or if it could become energized quickly with fatal levels of electricity. In most cases, victims do not immediately feel current when they enter or swim in the water around a marina or dock, which gives the victims the false impression that it is “safe” to swim.

Electricity usually enters the water when an electrical fault occurs aboard a nearby boat. And, most of the time this fault is intermittent. A fault may occur only when a light switch is turned on or other electrical device aboard the vessel cycles on. The water can appear and feel perfectly safe, but become energized with deadly electricity in a split second.

What can we do to prevent electric shock drowning?

• Never swim in or near marinas, docks or boatyards.

• Tell others about the dangers of ESD. Most people have never heard of it and are unaware of the danger.

• If you are a boat owner, have your boat inspected by an electrician with current American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Electrical Certification or by an ABYC Certified Technician. Boats with alternating current (AC) systems should have isolation transformers or equipment leakage circuit interrupter (ELCI) protection, comply with ABYC standards and should be serviced by an ABYC Certified Technician.

• Talk to marina owners and operators about the danger of ESD and ask them to install GFCI’s on all shore power pedestals and on all marina wiring circuits. Also ask if they are having their marinas regularly inspected by qualified electricians.

Electric shock drowning can occur in any location where electricity is provided near water but the majority of ESD deaths have occurred in public and private marinas and docks. Unfortunately, t’s sweet summertime and that means it's time to take the boat out, the typical victim of electric shock go to the lake and enjoy the cool, clear water.
