oe Rone, District 8 Trustee, recently received the Director Gold Credential certificate from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).

An ever-changing business environment has imposed new demands on electric cooperative directors, requiring increased knowledge of changes in the electric utility business, new governance skills and a solid knowledge of the cooperative principles and business model. Electric cooperatives in Florida have a commitment to work through the Florida Electric Cooperatives Association (FECA) and NRECA to sharpen this body of knowledge for the benefit of their electric cooperative member-owners.

Director Gold Credential (DGC) recognizes directors who have already earned their Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) and Board Leadership Certificate (BLC) and who wish to continue to learn throughout their service on the board.

Stop Scams - Know the Signs

S

cammers continue targeting WFEC members, changing their tactics daily. Below are some of the most popular tricks employed by these individuals, followed by some tips our members can utilize to protect themselves and their finances.

Hang up on Phone Scams: Scammers call threatening disconnection of electric service, demanding immediate payment by prepaid cards purchased at a local retail store (or credit card, debit card, bank draft, or wiring money), and insisting the victim call them back with card information to make payments. WFEC will send one or more disconnection notices before disconnecting or shutting off electric service. The cooperative will also offer several billing payment options without specifying which type of payment must be made.

TRICKS Bill Payment or Credit Con: Scammers may provide phony account routing numbers to use to pay utility bills, receive credit, or obtain federal assistance. In exchange for personal information that can be used for identity theft, they will provide a payment account number. If the number is entered during an online transaction, it may appear the utility has been paid, but no funds are actually paid to the utility, the account balance remains due, and late fees may be applied to accounts by the utility.

Equipment or Repair Bogus Fee: Scammers call demanding seperate payments to replace or install a utility-related device or meter. If a utility needs to upgrade or replace a piece of equipment, it will contact you ahead of time as a courtesy. If there is a charge related to work on equipment members own, members will be notified and it will typically be included on the monthly billing statement.

Overpayment Trick: Scammers call claiming overpayment has been made on an electric account and personal bank account or credit card information is needed to facilitate a refund.

This is not true. The utility typically applies any overpayments to accounts, allowing credit balances to cover any future charges, or refunds overpayments by mailing a check.

Scammers send suspicious emails that appear to be a bill sent by your utility company. These emails may feature your utility's logo and color scheme. Utility companies typically send bills by mail, unless you have opted to receive your bill by email.

he Special Needs Registry Shelter Program is designed to provide hurricane or disaster related evacuation assistance and care for those without other alternatives. If you need transportation assistance or have a health/medical condition that requires medical attention while at a shelter, you should register for this program. If you are a client of a hospice or home health care agency, you should ensure that they have already registered you into the system. This registration helps the local emergency management agency identify those in need of assistance and plan for resource allocation to meet those needs.

Special Needs Shelters are designed to meet the needs of persons who require assistance that exceeds services provided at a general population shelter. A Special Needs Shelter is a place to go when there is no other sheltering option. Shelters may be activated during an emergency event to provide mass care for people who cannot safely remain in their homes.

Special Needs Shelters are intended to provide, to the extent possible under emergency conditions, an environment that can sustain an individual’s level of health.

If a person is medically stable but needs help with basic tasks or uses an

electronic medical device and has no other evacuation options, they should pre-register for a Special Needs Shelter.

Who is eligible to stay in a Special Needs Shelter?

Stop Scams - Know the Signs

cammers continue targeting WFEC members, changing their tactics daily. Below are some of the most popular tricks employed by these individuals, followed by some tips our members can utilize to protect themselves and their finances.

Hang up on Phone Scams: Scammers call threatening disconnection of electric service, demanding immediate payment by prepaid cards purchased at a local retail store (or credit card, debit card, bank draft, or wiring money), and insisting the victim call them back with card information to make payments. WFEC will send one or more disconnection notices before disconnecting or shutting off electric service. The cooperative will also offer several billing payment options without specifying which type of payment must be made.

TRICKS Bill Payment or Credit Con: Scammers may provide phony account routing numbers to use to pay utility bills, receive credit, or obtain federal assistance. In exchange for personal information that can be used for identity theft, they will provide a payment account number. If the number is entered during an online transaction, it may appear the utility has been paid, but no funds are actually paid to the utility, the account balance remains due, and late fees may be applied to accounts by the utility.

Equipment or Repair Bogus Fee: Scammers call demanding seperate payments to replace or install a utility-related device or meter. If a utility needs to upgrade or replace a piece of equipment, it will contact you ahead of time as a courtesy. If there is a charge related to work on equipment members own, members will be notified and it will typically be included on the monthly billing statement.

Overpayment Trick: Scammers call claiming overpayment has been made on an electric account and personal bank account or credit card information is needed to facilitate a refund.
