Colder Weather: Is Your Home Ready?

s your home ready for the cold? Winterizing your home is very important if you want to reduce your heating costs this winter. Did you know that air leaks alone can account for 10 to 25 percent of a home’s heat loss? It’s important to make sure your heating unit is working properly, but it is also equally as important to make sure none of the heat is escaping.

For example, flat screen television prices have plummeted as technology has evolved––and so has the amount of electricity they use. Consumers wander into the big box store and are dazzled by walls of giant, brilliant televisions. What they used to pay for the paltry 32” model now might net them a 50” giant. And who doesn’t want to see their favorite show or sports event in near life size? But if you spring for the bigger TV, you won’t benefit from the increased energy efficiency of the newer technology. The bigger model uses as much juice as the older, smaller TV, which likely ends up in another room (reincarnated in another setting) still using power.

Or refrigerators. These are the showpieces of the evolution of smart appliances. Many new models include touchscreens and cameras; they communicate over the internet and probably even keep food cold and make ice. Yet what often happens is the old refrigerator ends up in the basement or garage, reincarnated as a dedicated beverage unit or overflow. 90137001 I’ll offer a couple words of advice to help you avoid––or at least reduce––the effects of vampire loads and technology reincarnation.

Digital Devices Impact Energy Use

h, the Digital Age. We have gadgets galore, the ability to manage our homes in new and innovative ways, brilliant images and captivating sounds of modern entertainment options and of course, the internet. Clearly, digital devices reign supreme. Yet these cool new capabilities come with a couple of pitfalls; vampire loads and the issue of “technology reincarnation.”

Over the course of the Digital Age, electricity use has continued to increase. Families have multiple televisions. Computer prices have plummeted, meaning many homes now have multiple computers. Everyone in the family needs a cell phone. Gaming consoles and set top cable/satellite boxes satisfy our desire for entertainment.

Major appliances aside, most digital devices do not use 120-volt power, which is the standard voltage of a home outlet. They actually use a lot less.

So, trying to plug your brand new smartphone directly into an outlet is going to lead to a fried device and lots of tears from someone. This is why low-voltage devices come with a power adapter. These “wall warts” as some term them, take the 120-volt electricity supplied by West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) and convert it to say, five volts. Unfortunately, most folks leave their adapters plugged in to make recharging easier. The problem with this approach is that the seemingly innocuous wall wart uses power even when it isn’t charging a device. 91070002 This invisible energy consumption is often called “vampire load.” Studies show that 5 to 10 percent1 of the average home’s energy use is from vampire loads. The only way to stop this is to unplug the power adapter when it is not in use or employ smart power strips. These look like the typical power strip but with a twist––only one socket gets power all the time. When the device or appliance connected to it turns on and starts using power, the remaining sockets receive power too. This is perfect for entertainment systems, computer set ups and a variety of other situations.

Technological advances have steadily increased energy efficiency and reduced purchase prices. On its face, this seems like a good thing.

Unfortunately, when replacing a product at the end of its life, the tendency

Plumbing pipes in unheated areas such as attics, crawl spaces and garages could also be at risk for freezing. Inexpensive foam pipe insulation is usually enough protection for moderately cold climates, like ours.

If pipes in exterior walls have frozen in the past (signs of this include: water damage, mold & moisture build-up) it’s probably because there is inadequate or improperly installed insulation. It might be worth it to open up the wall and add insulation to the area. 35543001 Homeowners should also have their chimneys inspected before their first use of the season. This cleaning will help create a safer operation of your system. It only takes a small accumulation of creosote glazing to create the potential for a chimney fire.

Cleaning outside gutters is also very important because a gutter that is full of debris cannot fulfill its true purpose. Water trapped inside can freeze in the winter, forming ice dams that weigh it down and cause damage to the gutters or roof. This can be avoided by cleaning them regularly.

Other things you can do to save money this winter include: check your water heater’s temperature and lower it to no higher than 120 degrees; adjust blinds and curtains to make sure they are open to catch free solar heat during the day and closed at night to keep heat inside and protect from drafts; use ceiling fans on low and reverse the rotation to blow air up in winter; and leave your garage door down because a warmer garage will help you save energy.

There are other ways to save energy too. Remember, you don’t pay for what you don’t use, so when you’re not watching TV or using lights, computers or other electronics, turn them off. • Make sure all extension cords & decorations used for outdoor displays are marked for outdoor use.

• Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, the house or other firm supports to protect them from wind damage, but take care not to attach the lights in a way that could damage the cord’s insulation.

• Keep extension cords and light strings clear of standing water.

• Make sure spotlights used to illuminate decorations are well-ventilated, protected from weather and a safe distance away from flammable items.

• Use caution when decorating near power lines. Keep yourself and your equipment at least 10 feet from power lines.

After the holidays are over, keep in mind that holiday decorations are meant for temporary use. Remember that live Christmas trees continue to dry out making them very flammable.

Always unplug decorations by using the gripping area. Pulling on the cord could damage the wire and present a fire or shock hazard. When taking down lights, inspect the wiring and discard any that have cracked, frayed or appear to have damaged wire insulation. It is also important to store indoor and outdoor decorations separately and keep them in a dry area that is not accessible by children or pets.

• Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). If circuits are not GCFI-protected, portable GCFIs can be purchased and require no special knowledge or equipment to be installed.

• Inspect all lights, decorations and extension cords for damage before using.

• Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, the house or other firm supports to protect them from wind damage, but take care not to attach the lights in a way that could damage the cord’s insulation.

• Keep extension cords and light strings clear of standing water.

• Make sure spotlights used to illuminate decorations are well-ventilated, protected from weather and a safe distance away from flammable items.

• Use caution when decorating near power lines. Keep yourself and your equipment at least 10 feet from power lines.

After the holidays are over, keep in mind that holiday decorations are meant for temporary use. Always unplug decorations by using the gripping area. Pulling on the cord could damage the wire and present a fire or shock hazard. Digital Devices Impact Energy Use

h, the Digital Age. We have gadgets galore, the ability to manage our homes in new and innovative ways, brilliant images and captivating sounds of modern entertainment options and of course, the internet. Clearly, digital devices reign supreme. Yet these cool new capabilities come with a couple of pitfalls; vampire loads and the issue of “technology reincarnation.”

Over the course of the Digital Age, electricity use has continued to increase. Families have multiple televisions. Computer prices have plummeted, meaning many homes now have multiple computers. Everyone in the family needs a cell phone. Gaming consoles and set top cable/satellite boxes satisfy our desire for entertainment.

Major appliances aside, most digital devices do not use 120-volt power, which is the standard voltage of a home outlet. They actually use a lot less.

So, trying to plug your brand new smartphone directly into an outlet is going to lead to a fried device and lots of tears from someone. This is why low-voltage devices come with a power adapter. These “wall warts” as some term them, take the 120-volt electricity supplied by West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) and convert it to say, five volts. Unfortunately, most folks leave their adapters plugged in to make recharging easier. The problem with this approach is that the seemingly innocuous wall wart uses power even when it isn’t charging a device. 91070002 This invisible energy consumption is often called “vampire load.” Studies show that 5 to 10 percent1 of the average home’s energy use is from vampire loads. The only way to stop this is to unplug the power adapter when it is not in use or employ smart power strips. These look like the typical power strip but with a twist––only one socket gets power all the time. When the device or appliance connected to it turns on and starts using power, the remaining sockets receive power too. This is perfect for entertainment systems, computer set ups and a variety of other situations.

Technological advances have steadily increased energy efficiency and reduced purchase prices. On its face, this seems like a good thing.

Unfortunately, when replacing a product at the end of its life, the tendency

Plumbing pipes in unheated areas such as attics, crawl spaces and garages could also be at risk for freezing. Inexpensive foam pipe insulation is usually enough protection for moderately cold climates, like ours.

If pipes in exterior walls have frozen in the past (signs of this include: water damage, mold & moisture build-up) it’s probably because there is inadequate or improperly installed insulation. It might be worth it to open up the wall and add insulation to the area. 35543001 Homeowners should also have their chimneys inspected before their first use of the season. This cleaning will help create a safer operation of your system. It only takes a small accumulation of creosote glazing to create the potential for a chimney fire.

Cleaning outside gutters is also very important because a gutter that is full of debris cannot fulfill its true purpose. Water trapped inside can freeze in the winter, forming ice dams that weigh it down and cause damage to the gutters or roof. This can be avoided by cleaning them regularly.

Other things you can do to save money this winter include: check your water heater’s temperature and lower it to no higher than 120 degrees; adjust blinds and curtains to make sure they are open to catch free solar heat during the day and closed at night to keep heat inside and protect from drafts; use ceiling fans on low and reverse the rotation to blow air up in winter; and leave your garage door down because a warmer garage will help you save energy.

There are other ways to save energy too. Remember, you don’t pay for what you don’t use, so when you’re not watching TV or using lights, computers or other electronics, turn them off. For example, flat screen television prices have plummeted as technology has evolved––and so has the amount of electricity they use. Consumers wander into the big box store and are dazzled by walls of giant, brilliant televisions. What they used to pay for the paltry 32” model now might net them a 50” giant. And who doesn’t want to see their favorite show or sports event in near life size? But if you spring for the bigger TV, you won’t benefit from the increased energy efficiency of the newer technology. The bigger model uses as much juice as the older, smaller TV, which likely ends up in another room (reincarnated in another setting) still using power.

Or refrigerators. These are the showpieces of the evolution of smart appliances. Many new models include touchscreens and cameras; they communicate over the internet and probably even keep food cold and make ice. Changes at Holmes County Public Library Holmes County Public Library is a member of the PPLCS Co-op. Co-op libraries include Holmes County, Jackson County, Calhoun County – this means we jointly accept cards, books and other library items from these libraries. Preference will be given to students pursuing a career in Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture or Veterinary Medicine. Scholarships are awarded to applicants based on academic aptitude, vocational promise, personal attributes and leadership qualities.
