Put Safety First When Using Generators

H

aving a generator to power your home during an outage can be a lifesaver. But if not used correctly, a generator can end your life or the lives of those restoring your power. Portable generators can be extremely dangerous if not used properly. West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) wants you to become more knowledgeable about electrical safety and these tips will keep you and your family safe from carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical shock, fire injuries and property damage.

Select a qualified vendor or electrician who can help you determine whether a portable or a permanent generator is best for your home. Unless you’re a licensed electrician, installing a permanent generator is never a DIY project. Only a qualified professional should install your generator and transfer switch and connect the equipment directly to your home’s wiring.

This type of generator must have a transfer switch that prevents energy from leaving your generator and going back out onto the utility’s electrical equipment, or “backfeeding.” Backfeeding can be fatal to a line worker or others near downed power lines.

If using a portable generator, keep these tips in mind: Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring without an appropriate transfer switch installed. This can cause backfeeding along power lines and electrocute anyone coming into contact with them, including lineworkers making repairs. (See above for more information about backfeeding).

Never operate generators in enclosed spaces. Use carbon monoxide detectors in nearby enclosed spaces to monitor levels, as generators can produce high levels of carbon monoxide very quickly. This can be deadly.

fter a two-year absence, West Florida Electric Cooperative’s (WFEC) Youth Tour program participants visited Washington, D.C. June 16-19. Haven White, Cottondale High School; Noah Mercer, Marianna High School and Kat Blackburn, Blountstown High School represented WFEC as its Youth Tour delegates on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. Brayden Whitehead also participated in the trip as a representative of the Florida Rural Electric Cooperatives Association (FECA). Whitehead is the grandson of WFEC employee, Susie Johnson and he competed in a separate essay competition held for the children and grandchildren of WFEC employees and board members. The winner of this essay competition is selected as the Youth Tour representative for the Florida Rural Electric Cooperatives Association.

While in Washington, the students learned first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, how our government operates and about how and why electric co-ops were formed. The students also visited many monuments and memorials including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Memorial, World War II Memorial, Viet Nam Memorial, the Iwo Jima Monument and many more. The group also visited many of D.C.’s famous museums, landmarks and Arlington National Cemetery.

One of the highlights for Haven White was seeing different and important American monuments. “As a student, you truly only see the White House, Capitol, Washington Monument, etc. in books. However, seeing it right in front of me was an eye-opening experience,” she said.

Kat Blackburn said that her favorite experience was visiting Arlington National Cemetery. She said she gained a lot more respect for the people and soldiers that died for our country.

The Youth Tour representatives also had the chance to participate in Youth Day, where they heard motivational speaker, Paralympic gold medalist and author, Mike Schlappi speak. He shares with our future leaders how he overcame challenges from an accident that left him paralyzed and in deep despair to become a successful athlete, author and speaker. He is the founder and director of the Wheelchair Sports Foundation, providing sports and recreational opportunities for disabled athletes.

All of the WFEC Youth Tour representatives agree they discovered new things about themselves through their participation in the trip. All of them stated that they gained more respect for our country, more knowledge about its history and the obstacles, trials and tribulations some of our country’s forefathers experienced.

“I believe my favorite thing I saw while in Washington was the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It truly opened my eyes and helped me see all the obstacles African Americans have overcome in America’s history. It was challenging for people of African descent to live in this America and through their perseverance, they were able to prove their worth and showcase their strength,” said White.

The Youth Tour program is open to all high school juniors whose parents or guardians are members of West Florida Electric Cooperative. Each high school within WFEC’s service area selects a representative for the State Youth Tour during the fall semester each year. The selected representatives then go on to compete for the slots available for the National Youth Tour trip.

“The highlight of the trip that I won’t forget is when we were returning on the Potomac River dinner cruise and seeing the Capitol Building all lit up and it was the focus point on the horizon. It reminded me of the beauty of America where people go every day to make important decisions about our future,” said Mercer.

Steps to Help Hold Down Summer Bills

T

his summer WFEC members have experienced some dangerously high temperatures and many of us are spending more time indoors running appliances and adjusting thermostats to cooler settings.

Unfortunately, doing so can drive up the cost of electric bills.

But what if you knew an easy way to help West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) keep your bills as affordable as possible, even as temperatures reach triple digits? Together with other members, you can hold down a major cost that impacts your bill: the cost of wholesale power.

It all begins with “peaks.” When many people use electricity at the same time, the demand for power rises, sometimes leading to the highest -- or “peak” -- demand of the day, week, month or year. During summer, peak times are usually from 3 to 7 p.m. in the afternoon when more homes and businesses are using energy for cooling.

You may be wondering why peaks matter and how they affect the price you pay for electricity.

Peaks cause an increase in your cooperative’s largest expense — the cost of generating power.

PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, WFEC’s wholesale power supplier, generates our power. PowerSouth is seeing historic numbers in summer peak demand and forecasting higher peaks to come. That means a lot of people are using a lot of power at peak times this summer, which drives up wholesale power costs.

You can help keep costs low.

It’s not just about how much electricity you use but when you use it. During peak hours, simply delay chores that require electricity. If possible, shift your use of large appliances and hot water to off-peak times. You’ll help reduce the cost of wholesale power.

You can take other actions, too. Adjusting your thermostat, even a few degrees, can make a big difference in overall energy demand. Use ceiling and PAGE 14

portable fans to circulate air, when possible, because they require less energy than your air conditioner.

You can also turn off unneeded lights and switch off electronics you aren’t using.

Steps to Help Hold Down Summer Bills

T

his summer WFEC members have experienced some dangerously high temperatures and many of us are spending more time indoors running appliances and adjusting thermostats to cooler settings.

Unfortunately, doing so can drive up the cost of electric bills.

But what if you knew an easy way to help West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) keep your bills as affordable as possible, even as temperatures reach triple digits? Together with other members, you can hold down a major cost that impacts your bill: the cost of wholesale power.

It all begins with “peaks.” When many people use electricity at the same time, the demand for power rises, sometimes leading to the highest -- or “peak” -- demand of the day, week, month or year. During summer, peak times are usually from 3 to 7 p.m. in the afternoon when more homes and businesses are using energy for cooling.

You may be wondering why peaks matter and how they affect the price you pay for electricity.

Peaks cause an increase in your cooperative’s largest expense — the cost of generating power.

PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, WFEC’s wholesale power supplier, generates our power. PowerSouth is seeing historic numbers in summer peak demand and forecasting higher peaks to come. That means a lot of people are using a lot of power at peak times this summer, which drives up wholesale power costs.

You can help keep costs low.

It’s not just about how much electricity you use but when you use it. During peak hours, simply delay chores that require electricity. If possible, shift your use of large appliances and hot water to off-peak times. You’ll help reduce the cost of wholesale power.

You can take other actions, too. Adjusting your thermostat, even a few degrees, can make a big difference in overall energy demand. Use ceiling and PAGE 14

portable fans to circulate air, when possible, because they require less energy than your air conditioner.

You can also turn off unneeded lights and switch off electronics you aren’t using.

One of the highlights for Haven White was seeing different and important American monuments. “As a student, you truly only see the White House, Capitol, Washington Monument, etc. in books. However, seeing it right in front of me was an eye-opening experience,” she said.

Kat Blackburn said that her favorite experience was visiting Arlington National Cemetery. She said she gained a lot more respect for the people and soldiers that died for our country.

The Youth Tour representatives also had the chance to participate in Youth Day, where they heard motivational speaker, Paralympic gold medalist and author, Mike Schlappi speak. He shares with our future leaders how he overcame challenges from an accident that left him paralyzed and in deep despair to become a successful athlete, author and speaker. He is the founder and director of the Wheelchair Sports Foundation, providing sports and recreational opportunities for disabled athletes.

“This experience has benefited me all the way around,” said Kat Kat Blackburn with Congressman Neal Dunn Blackburn. “Everything we saw on this trip was such a truly great experience and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she continued.

The highlight of my trip was spending time with the people from my co-op. They became a family to me.”

All of the WFEC Youth Tour representatives agree they discovered new things about themselves through their participation in the trip. All of them stated that they gained more respect for our country, more knowledge about its history and the obstacles, trials and tribulations some of our country’s forefathers experienced.

“I believe my favorite thing I saw while in Washington was the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It truly opened my eyes and helped me see all the obstacles African Americans have overcome in America’s history. It was challenging for people of African descent to live in this America and through their perseverance, they were able to prove their worth and showcase their strength,” said White.

The Youth Tour program is open to all high school juniors whose parents or guardians are members of West Florida Electric Cooperative. Each high school within WFEC’s service area selects a representative for the State Youth Tour during the fall semester each year. The selected representatives then go on to compete for the slots available for the National Youth Tour trip.

“The highlight of the trip that I won’t forget is when we were returning on the Potomac River dinner cruise and seeing the Capitol Building all lit up and it was the focus point on the horizon. It reminded me of the beauty of America where people go every day to make important decisions about our future,” said Mercer.

fter a two-year absence, West Florida Electric Cooperative’s (WFEC) Youth Tour program participants visited Washington, D.C. June 16-19. Haven White, Cottondale High School; Noah Mercer, Marianna High School and Kat Blackburn, Blountstown High School represented WFEC as its Youth Tour delegates on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. Brayden Whitehead also participated in the trip as a representative of the Florida Rural Electric Cooperatives Association (FECA). Whitehead is the grandson of WFEC employee, Susie Johnson and he competed in a separate essay competition held for the children and grandchildren of WFEC employees and board members. The winner of this essay competition is selected as the Youth Tour representative for the Florida Rural Electric Cooperatives Association.

While in Washington, the students learned first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, how our government operates and about how and why electric co-ops were formed. The students also visited many monuments and memorials including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Memorial, World War II Memorial, Viet Nam Memorial, the Iwo Jima Monument and many more. The group also visited many of D.C.’s famous museums, landmarks and Arlington National Cemetery.

Put Safety First When Using Generators

H

aving a generator to power your home during an outage can be a lifesaver. But if not used correctly, a generator can end your life or the lives of those restoring your power. Portable generators can be extremely dangerous if not used properly. West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) wants you to become more knowledgeable about electrical safety and these tips will keep you and your family safe from carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical shock, fire injuries and property damage.

Select a qualified vendor or electrician who can help you determine whether a portable or a permanent generator is best for your home. Unless you’re a licensed electrician, installing a permanent generator is never a DIY project. Only a qualified professional should install your generator and transfer switch and connect the equipment directly to your home’s wiring.

This type of generator must have a transfer switch that prevents energy from leaving your generator and going back out onto the utility’s electrical equipment, or “backfeeding.” Backfeeding can be fatal to a line worker or others near downed power lines.

If using a portable generator, keep these tips in mind: Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring without an appropriate transfer switch installed. This can cause backfeeding along power lines and electrocute anyone coming into contact with them, including lineworkers making repairs. (See above for more information about backfeeding).
