Owens Earns Certification

nother member of your West Florida Electric Board of Trustees recently earned a certification from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). 87782001 George Clayton Owens, pictured below on the left, completed courses for the Director Gold Credential (DGC). This level of certification recognizes trustees who have earned both the Certified Cooperative Director (CCD) and Board Leadership (BLC) certificates. Director Gold recognizes trustees who are committed to continuing their education beyond the CCD and BLC. The Director Gold Certification demonstrates a commitment to continue learning while executing board responsibilities to the best of their ability throughout their service on the cooperative’s board.

One of the key strengths of the rural electric program is its commitment to education and professional development. The Director Gold Certificate is the hallmark of a committed electric cooperative director, according to NRECA, helping demonstrate commitment to members and the director's

commitment to continuing education. The CCD prepares directors to fulfill their fiduciary duty as elected officials serving on behalf of their membership. The purpose of all NRECA director level education is to prepare directors to make informed business decisions in the boardroom that benefit the coop and its members.

AARP Smart Driver Course April 9; 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Washington County Ag Center, 1424 Jackson Avenue, Chipley Sue Trueman, with AARP, will conduct the AARP Smart Driver Course for county residents. Participants are updated regarding new traffic laws and rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and proven safety strategies.

All participants receive a certificate to provide to their automobile insurer possibly enabling them to receive a discount on their premiums, depending on their carrier’s guidelines. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-AARP members. Registration fees will be collected the day of the course. ost of us lead busy lives. We find ourselves multitasking, constantly checking phones and email to keep up with the demands of modern life. Thanks to technology, we can accomplish many tasks electronically and remotely to be more efficient.

And with so many pressing obligations, we like to protect our “spare” time. Invitations to attend in-person meetings and gatherings are weighed carefully as we decide whether or not our time and effort to attend is beneficial. Lineman Appreciation Day Celebrated This Month

N

ational studies consistently rank power line installers and repairers among the most dangerous jobs in the country, and for good reason. Laboring high in the air wearing heavy equipment and working directly with high voltage creates the perfect storm of a dangerous and unforgiving profession. But electric lineworkers are up to the task.

These brave men and women across the country are committed to safety, as well as the challenges of the job.

West Florida Electric Cooperative’s lineworkers are responsible for keeping power flowing day and night, regardless of national holidays, vacations, birthdays, weddings or other important family milestones.

Beyond the years of specialized training and apprenticeships, it takes fortitude and a mission-oriented outlook to be a good lineworker. In fact, this service-oriented mentality is a hallmark characteristic of lineworkers.

The job requires lineworkers to set aside their personal priorities to better serve their local community.

To perform their jobs successfully, lineworkers depend on their years of training, experience and each other to get the job done safely. Equally important is their reliance on a strong support system at home. A lineworker’s family understands and supports their loved one’s commitment to the greater community during severe storms and power outages. This means in times of prolonged outages, the family and their lineworker may have minimal communication and not see each other for several days. Without strong family support and understanding, this challenging job would be all the more difficult. 43950001 In our area and across the country, electric co-op lineworkers’ mission-focused mentality of helping others often extends beyond their commitment to their work at the co-op. Lineworkers are often familiar figures in the community. They can be found coaching youth sports teams, volunteering for local charities and serving on local advisory boards. For example, several linemen and other co-op employees are coaching baseball teams this spring in WFEC’s service territory while many others are active in the churches and with other community organizations.

WFEC will celebrate Lineman Appreciation Day on April 11 with its engineering & operations staff.

Given the dedication of WFEC’s lineworkers, and support staff, both on and off the job, please take a moment and acknowledge the many contributions they make to our local community. And if you see their family members in the grocery store or out and about in the town, please offer them a thank you as well.

Chocolate Chip Pie Ingredients: (makes 2 pies) 6 oz. chocolate chips 2 pie crusts 2 sticks butter, melted 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 cup self-rising flour 2 teaspoons vanilla Directions: Divide chocolate chips into bottom of the two pie crusts. Then mix butter, sugar, eggs, flour and vanilla and pour over top of chocolate chips to form a crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

t the co-op we always refer to those we serve as members. In a world where similar relationships are usually driven by profit and the bottom line, some may be skeptical when we use the quaint term “member.”

Yes, there is a difference to being a member of a cooperative. You are more than just a customer, which is why we stress the word “member.” It is an important word.

It is important to say “member” when we communicate with you, to remind you that you are a part of the cooperative. It is not meant to be an exclusive word because membership is open to anyone who can use our service and accept the responsibility of membership.

“Member” is an important word for the cooperative board of trustees, management and employees. It keeps us focused on who we serve and who stands to benefit as we carry out our responsibilities.

Many of the ultimate decisions about the co-op are made by the board of trustees that is composed of members just like you. There are nine trustees, each representing a district of the co-op.

We invite you to attend our annual meeting each year. During the Annual Meeting/Member Appreciation Day, we try to make it fun, serving up a meal and offering entertainment and door prizes.

We take many steps to provide reliable, affordable electric service and maintain a not-for-profit status.

When we have margins at the end of the year, we allocate them back to every member in the form of capital credits. All members receive a portion, according to how much power they used. (Please see the notice on page 3 regarding capital credits for this year.)

We have a variety of programs and policies designed to maximize the benefit of membership. Some are described on our website, www.westflorida.coop. If your home has a lot of challenges, we can perform an energy audit to help determine ways to make it more energy efficient. This is a free service for all WFEC members.

Then mix butter, sugar, eggs, flour and vanilla and pour over top of chocolate chips to form a crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

ost of us lead busy lives. We find ourselves multitasking, constantly checking phones and email to keep up with the demands of modern life. Thanks to technology, we can accomplish many tasks electronically and remotely to be more efficient.

And with so many pressing obligations, we like to protect our “spare” time. nother member of your West Florida Electric Board of Trustees recently earned a certification from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). 87782001 George Clayton Owens, pictured below on the left, completed courses for the Director Gold Credential (DGC). This level of certification recognizes trustees who have earned both the Certified Cooperative Director (CCD) and Board Leadership (BLC) certificates. Director Gold recognizes trustees who are committed to continuing their education beyond the CCD and BLC. The Director Gold Certification demonstrates a commitment to continue learning while executing board responsibilities to the best of their ability throughout their service on the cooperative’s board.

One of the key strengths of the rural electric program is its commitment to education and professional development. The Director Gold Certificate is the hallmark of a committed electric cooperative director, according to NRECA, helping demonstrate commitment to members and the director's

commitment to continuing education. The CCD prepares directors to fulfill their fiduciary duty as elected officials serving on behalf of their membership. The purpose of all NRECA director level education is to prepare directors to make informed business decisions in the boardroom that benefit the coop and its members.
