t’s time for WFEC’s Annual Meeting/Member Appreciation Day! The board of trustees and employees invite all members to join us at the Graceville Civic Center (5224 Brown Street) on Saturday, April 28 from 8:00 a.m. until noon.

Many activities have been planned for members throughout the day including a health fair with screenings for blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure. For the most accurate results, participants should fast for at least eight hours prior to taking these tests. Representatives from Eye Center South will conduct vision exams and Covenant Hospice will also be on hand to share information about home health, and end of life care.

Some of the other activities include electrical safety demonstrations and more. Children’s activities will also take place throughout the day.

Entertainment for the day will be The Cedar Creek Band who have played all over the southeastern United States with some of the biggest names around including, Ricky Scaggs, Ralph Stanley, Grandpa Jones, Mac Wiseman, Rhonda Vincent, John Hartford and many other Grand Old Opry stars. The band has opened for Joe Diffie, Marty Rayborn & Shenandoah as well as many others over the years. They play modern

ost consumers would not equate active involvement in their electric company with helping their community. But West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) is not an ordinary utility company. We’re a co-op, and our business model is meant to serve the members and the community in which it operates – not to make a healthy profit for investors five states away. WFEC’s customers are more than consumers, they are members of the cooperative. And herein lies the difference.

Our core purpose and mission is to provide safe, reliable and affordable power to our members. But as a co-op, we are motivated by service to the community, rather than profits. After meeting our annual expenses, we invest the extra money back into the co-op and the wider community. We depend on the guidance and perspective of our members and board to help set priorities for the co-op and guide Joe Rone, President, Board of Trustees governance decisions. The purpose of our annual meeting is to give members a voice in co-op matters, which impact the membership as a whole. Our board of trustees is comprised of members who live and work in our service area because they are in a position to know where community investments are most needed.

West Florida Electric is controlled by members who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions.

This is why we value your participation in our annual meeting, held each year Russell Dunaway, EVP & CEO in April, and in other co-op events.

s April arrives, it brings with it the showers that produce spring flowers. It also heralds the beginning of a potentially stormy season that can inherently include power outages. While West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) strives to provide reliable electricity to our members, there are times when Mother Nature has other plans. Most of us can ride out a storm from the comfort and convenience of our homes.

Braving stormy weather and other challenging conditions, lineworkers sometimes climb 40 or more feet in the air, carrying heaving equipment to restore power. Listed as one of the 10 most dangerous jobs in the U.S., lineworkers must perform detailed tasks next to high voltage power lines. To help keep them safe, lineworkers wear specialized protective clothing and equipment at all times when on the job. This includes special fire-resistant clothing that will self-extinguish, limiting potential injuries from burns and sparks. The Special Needs Registry Shelter Program is designed to provide hurricane or disaster related evacuation assistance and care for those without other alternatives. If you need transportation assistance or have a health/medical condition that requires medical attention while at a shelter, you should register for this program. If you are a client of a hospice or home health care agency, you should ensure that they have already registered you into the system. This registration helps the local emergency management agency identify those in need of assistance and plan for resource allocation to meet those needs.

Persons with special needs may authorize emergency response personnel to enter their homes during search-and-rescue operations, if necessary, to ensure their safety and welfare following disasters.

This registration must be updated annually. West Florida Electric Cooperative helps local emergency management agencies get the word out about this program.

If you or someone you know has a special condition affecting eyesight, hearing, speech, walking, breathing or an emotional condition and would need assistance during evacuations and sheltering, please contact your local emergency management agency.

Anyone needing electric service who lives within WFEC's service area can become a member.

2. Democratic member control - Your co-op depends on the guidance and perspective or our members and board to help set priorities for the cooperative and guide governance decisions. The purpose of our annual meeting is to give members a voice in co-op matters, impacting the membership as a whole. The Special Needs Registry Shelter Program is designed to provide hurricane or disaster related evacuation assistance and care for those without other alternatives. If you need transportation assistance or have a health/medical condition that requires medical attention while at a shelter, you should register for this program. If you are a client of a hospice or home health care agency, you should ensure that they have already registered you into the system. This registration helps the local emergency management agency identify those in need of assistance and plan for resource allocation to meet those needs.

Persons with special needs may authorize emergency response personnel to enter their homes during search-and-rescue operations, if necessary, to ensure their safety and welfare following disasters.

This registration must be updated annually. West Florida Electric Cooperative helps local emergency management agencies get the word out about this program.

If you or someone you know has a special condition affecting eyesight, hearing, speech, walking, breathing or an emotional condition and would need assistance during evacuations and sheltering, please contact your local emergency management agency.

The level of care given in special needs shelters goes above the basic firstaid care available to shelters open to the general population.

s April arrives, it brings with it the showers that produce spring flowers. It also heralds the beginning of a potentially stormy season that can inherently include power outages. While West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) strives to provide reliable electricity to our members, there are times when Mother Nature has other plans. Most of us can ride out a storm from the comfort and convenience of our homes.

However, there is a group of professionals that spring into action when the weather takes a turn for the worst – co-op lineworkers.

Braving stormy weather and other challenging conditions, lineworkers sometimes climb 40 or more feet in the air, carrying heaving equipment to restore power. Listed as one of the 10 most dangerous jobs in the U.S., lineworkers must perform detailed tasks next to high voltage power lines. To help keep them safe, lineworkers wear specialized protective clothing and equipment at all times when on the job. This includes special fire-resistant clothing that will self-extinguish, limiting potential injuries from burns and sparks. Insulated and rubber gloves are worn in tandem to protect them from electrical shock. While the gear performs a critical continued page 16

ost consumers would not equate active involvement in their electric company with helping their community. But West Florida Electric Cooperative (WFEC) is not an ordinary utility company. We’re a co-op, and our business model is meant to serve the members and the community in which it operates – not to make a healthy profit for investors five states away. WFEC’s customers are more than consumers, they are members of the cooperative. And herein lies the difference.

Our core purpose and mission is to provide safe, reliable and affordable power to our members. But as a co-op, we are motivated by service to the community, rather than profits. After meeting our annual expenses, we invest the extra money back into the co-op and the wider community. We depend on the guidance and perspective of our members and board to help set priorities for the co-op and guide Joe Rone, President, Board of Trustees governance decisions. The purpose of our annual meeting is to give members a voice in co-op matters, which impact the membership as a whole. Our board of trustees is comprised of members who live and work in our service area because they are in a position to know where community investments are most needed.

West Florida Electric is controlled by members who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions.

This is why we value your participation in our annual meeting, held each year Russell Dunaway, EVP & CEO in April, and in other co-op events.

t’s time for WFEC’s Annual Meeting/Member Appreciation Day! The board of trustees and employees invite all members to join us at the Graceville Civic Center (5224 Brown Street) on Saturday, April 28 from 8:00 a.m. until noon.

Many activities have been planned for members throughout the day including a health fair with screenings for blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure. For the most accurate results, participants should fast for at least eight hours prior to taking these tests. Representatives from Eye Center South will conduct vision exams and Covenant Hospice will also be on hand to share information about home health, and end of life care.

Some of the other activities include electrical safety demonstrations and more. Children’s activities will also take place throughout the day.

Entertainment for the day will be The Cedar Creek Band who have played all over the southeastern United States with some of the biggest names around including, Ricky Scaggs, Ralph Stanley, Grandpa Jones, Mac Wiseman, Rhonda Vincent, John Hartford and many other Grand Old Opry stars. The band has opened for Joe Diffie, Marty Rayborn & Shenandoah as well as many others over the years. They play modern
