September 2022 EDITORIAL - James Warrener Welcome to another month of change in the world of Weymouth Football Club. “The one thing that never changes in football is the need for change” With his local connections to me up here in the Midlands, I wanted David Oldfield to succeed (just as I wanted Brian Stock to do well as he was always available for interviews and newsletter content). I think, though, that it was clear that a change was needed based on the results on the pitch So it farewell to David and hello to Bobby Wilkinson. He is a manager that has been on the radar for a while now with his success at Hungerford most notable. Welcome to the club Bobby. None of us are under any illusions on how big his job is. But I think that one thing WFC fans can never be criticised for is their support of the team between the whistles. Long may that continue. We might be in the doldrums footballing wise and in a rebuild off the pitch, but things change in football quickly. Let’s keep doing our bit and contribute to the return of the good times. Naturally the need for resource to be raised has come at the worst possible time. Inflation and the run-up to Christmas are all things that families, rightly, should put first. So we have to be creative in our methods of getting the club back on track. No idea is a bad idea. So share them and let’s try them. My fingers are crossed that we can get that much needed boost of an upturn in form shortly and that we can start to think more long term and strategically. The recent case of Worcester Warriors Rugby Union Club is a massive wake up call for all sports clubs post covid. Having been close to their predicament a number of times with the Terras my thoughts are with the fans and local businesses who will be out of pocket as a result of that clubs demise. Chairman's Chatter Hello everyone and welcome to the September newsletter. Last month I gave you an update of where we are in regards to ongoing fundraising. I will give a brief update and then move onto things pitch side! Firstly, for those of you who have already signed up for the Claret & Blue lottery, thank you. There are now 70 people playing! My personal view is, this is the fundraising initiative which is sustainable, one the club can grow and expand and ensure a reasonable non match day income stream, a vital component if we are to push sustainably for honours in the future. It is now easier to play than ever thanks to some great work by Kate in the office, who has created the live numbers page for us. If we can grow the lottery sufficiently, our medium term plan would be to conduct the monthly prize draw at half time on the pitch at a suitable home game. If the winners are in attendance, they can be presented with their prizes. This will give the lottery further exposure and hopefully encourage further growth. Please encourage your family and friends to play, more players means bigger cash prizes. We will keep you posted. Finally on fundraising, whilst work is currently ongoing to put on an event next month and the Hall of Fame next year, we would like to hear from you about events you would like to see put on in the Wessex Lounge? We have tried most things over the years, the main problem being take up! There never seems to be a 'right time' for events, with absolutely no one turning up for the race night in July! We would like to hear your thoughts. On the pitch we have enjoyed mixed fortunes in the league and the FA Cup! Our league performance against Dover was not what I was expecting and best forgotten, let's move onto the Havant league game! What a game that was! Riding high in the league as they are, the lads ran the opposition ragged for 75 minutes or more, how we never went in at the break two or three goals to the good I don't know. The cruel fates of football hit us again though, with a route one goal for them followed by a second not long after to take the wind out of our sails! But I know many of you went home far more buoyed by the overall performance and the thought that, keep to that standard and the results will surely come! And so it proved the case, albeit not in the pressure cooker of the league! With another high flying team in Welling United providing the opposition, this time in the FA Cup, we got what we deserved from a thoroughly enjoyable performance! We also got some much needed prize money and on into the next round, where, of all people, we face Havant & Waterlooville away on Saturday 15th October! A chance for some revenge do you think?

I spent a part of the cup game in the disabled viewing area talking to Big Merv, and let me tell you, being next to the away bench, Welling's management did not like what they were seeing and drove their players on to do better, alas to no avail! So don't think they were not up for it, far from it! What we need now though is that vital first win in the league to supercharge our climb up the league table. You know it's coming! You may have read that Dormeo will not be extending their sponsorship with us beyond this month. As disappointing as it is, we need to move on, and new sponsors will be announced at the end of October via a patrons draw. At only £250 to enter, if you have a company or business, or know one that might be interested, get in touch. Entries close on 28 October. We will be offering fans with home shirts the option to have the new sponsors added if they wish, details will be announced once we have the sponsor in place. Membership Update The WFCSA AGM is being hosted at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Thursday 13th October with a 7:30pm start time in the lounge. Members will have received their proxy voting forms and details of what will be happening at the meeting. This months members draw has been concluded with the following winners announced.
