Growing Guide

Flowers Ageratum Hawaii Mix A mix of pastel colors on dwarf 6" plants. Perfect for pots or borders with fluffy puffs of color.

Alyssum Easter Basket Mix A blend of unique colors. Vigorous spreading plants, can be planted in borders or hanging baskets. Plants reach about 4' tall, richer colors are achieved if given some shade in the heat of summer.

New Carpet of Snow Snowy white flowers, 3 -5" tall, maintains its compact spreading habit all season long.

Begonias Begonias are tender perennials, grown for their colorful flowers and foliage.

Most begonias can be grown outdoors in pots, in the ground, or in hanging baskets in filtered light and moist, but well drained soil. Long blooming red, yellow, scarlet, orange and pink flowers on showy begonia. Partial shade produces best growth and flowering results.

Coleus Black Dragon Black Dragons range from 12-18" and have large serrated leaves with unusual purplish black edges with red centers.

Can also be used as a houseplant.

Rainbow Mix Rainbow range from 12-18" and is a vigorous grower with heart-shaped leaves ideal for containers, borders and boxes.

Wizard Mix A base branching version of Rainbow, 10".

Cosmos Sensation Mix Large-flowered cosmos need little tending and will withstand the first mild frosts of fall. Great cut flower, 85-90 days on 4-5' plants.

Sonata Mix Showy flowers are single with a mix of white and pink. Flowers are 2 ½", and plants are 20 – 25" tall and wind tolerant.

Dianthus Raspberry Parfait Striking raspberry red and light pink flowers which resemble small bullseyes.

Grows well in pots or beds, and has a compact growth habit.

Digitalus Foxy Mix Foxglove that can be grown as an annual or bieannual. Reaching a height of 3' with beautiful flowers of white, yellow, pink and rosy red. Likes a rich moist soil perfect for an open woodland garden or flower bed.

Flowers Fuchsia

Geranium

Dark Eyes

Red

Is upright in form with a bushy branching habit. The leaves are midgreen. Early summer to fall flowers are medium, pendant, double, with tubes and sepals upturned that are deep red with deep violet-blue corollas.

This shrub grows to a height of 2' tall and 2 1/2' wide. Fruit are deep purple.

Fuchsias prefer partial shade and should never dry out.

Strong geranium fragrance. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Height of 30" to 4', width of up to 4'.

Miss California Single white corolla with pink veining and sepals of pink. Blooms in early summer to early August. This fuchsia has oval, green leaves. Mulch heavily where winters are cold.

Salmon A dark salmon flower on plants with medium green leaves and dark zoning. Good heat tolerance. Wonderful in containers. Dead-heading is necessary, make sure you break dead blooms off from the base of the stalk

Impatiens Blitz Deep Orange Excellent for baskets and containers. Extra large blooms with a height of 10-12" and 10-12' spread.

Swingtime Has some of the showiest and exuberant lush, large flowers you’ll find on a fuchsia plant. The bud is a pretty crimson red, opening with the red outer petals, topping a double, full white skirt and long, wispy hot pink stamens.

Winston Churchill Is a very free-flowering bushy upright fuchsia with double flowers of pink and lavender-blue. Not fully hardy and will need some shelter from cold drying winds. Prefers a well-drained, fertile soil in sun/partial shade.

Envoy Peach Butterfly Best large flowered type for hanging baskets and containers.

Super Elfin Mix (Busy Lizzie) Free branching from 8" to 10" tall. The earliest flowering with masses of blooms. They do best in the shade and require little care.

Tempo Crystal Mix Great for baskets or beds, 9" high with a 12 - 20" spread blooms 2½" across.

Intense, deep blue flowers set off by dark bronze foliage on extremely compact plants. Excellent for edgings or borders, 4 - 6" tall and upright.

Lots of flowers. Compact plants which perform well in full sun or shade with an afternoon fragrance. Perfect for floral arrangements, 14" tall.

Regatta White

Pansy

Trailing lobelia with white flowers. Great for baskets- flowers hang over edge.

Sapphire Trailing blue lobelia with white eye that is great for baskets. Flowers trail over edge.

Marigold French Brocade Mix French type, 10-18" tall with continuous 1 -2" blooms. Includes golden yellow, burnt orange with yellow margins and reddish orange with distinctive red accents.

French Lemondrop Large yellow, fully double crested blooms. Dwarf, bushy plants 8-9".

Moss Rose Double Mix Vivid blooms that open earlier in the morning, close in the evening and on cloudy days. Great for a sunny, dry, poor-soil area.

Creeping habit with a height of 4-6".

Imperial Antique Shades Blooms early and profuse. Resistant to summer heat. Huge 3 to 3 ½" blooms on sturdy, 6" plants that maintain a dwarf, compact habit.

Majestic Giants Mix Very vigorous and cold resistant. Will sometimes make it through the winter and surprise you in the spring with bloom.

Extra large flowers about 4" across with traditional dark blotched faces.

Flowers Petunia (continued) Celebrity Yellow, Celebrity Burgundy, Celebrity Red, Celebrity Blue, Celebrity Burgundy Frost Floribunda petunias have a grandiflora flower size with the weather tolerance of a multiflora. Thrives in humid, rainy conditions with 3 ½" flowers on compact plants reaching 8 -10" at full bloom.

Glorious Double Mix Bright mix of solids and bicolors, including red, white, salmon, rose ping, burgundy and purple. For bedding plants or containers.

Primetime White Floribunda 2 ¾" flowers on 11" plants.

Wave Petunias Purple, Blue and Tidal wave. The first of the ground-hugging or “prostrate” petunias grown from seed. Plants will spread from 2 to 4' and reach no more than 6" in height, with incredible weather tolerance and blooming power.

Bright 3"flowers blooming into fall. Use in pots, baskets and landscape.

Sunflower Autumn Beauty Beautiful flowers up to 8" across. Bright yellow, bronze and purple shades with some bi-colors. Multi-branching producing many long stems, 5' tall.

Teddy Bear Loads of golden yellow, multi-petal chrysanthemum-type blooms. Dwarf sturdy plants are upright, growing about 3' tall.

Violas Johnny Jump-up (Helen Mount Variety) Blossoms of tiny cheerful faces of yellow, blue and purple flowers. Blooms are about ½" and can be perennial.

Depending on the winter, violas will pop up all over the following spring.

Zinnia Catus Mix Eye-catching zinniza with big, shaggy, chrysanthemum-like 4-5" blooms. Freeflowering plants, 30-36".

Rocket

Old Fashioned variety with huge double and single blooms on 30" plants.

Resistant to heat, tall, multiple spikes, strong and consistent, dead-head for more blooms. It is a great cut flower and will survive a light frost in the fall, 30 -36" tall.

Herbs Basil, Cinnamon

Bergamot, Wild

Emerald green leaves have burgundy accents in veins and stems. Distinctive cinnamon aroma. Vigorous bushy plants can be used for fresh eating, teas and potpourri.

Bright lavender blooms with a spicy scent. Used by Native Americans to soothe bronchial complaints and ease colds. Great for teas and perennial.

36-48" tall.

Basil, Genovese

Borage

Also known as Sweet Basil, it is a must for pesto and tomato sandwiches. Likes warm weather. Has a heady, spicy fragrance and taste - 24 -30" tall.

Easy to grow, 18 - 30" tall, has tiny blue and pink flowers for garnishes and salads. Bees love it and iced borage tea is great in summer. Sometimes perennial.

Basil, Holy

Calendula, Pacfic Beauty

A sacred herb of the Hindu religion.

An excellent tea herb, but more highly valued as a companion plant and ornamental. Aromatic, fuzzy 2" leaves have an unusual scent, sometimes described as walnut, ripe bananas, or spice - 8-12" tall.

Prefers sun, 18 - 20" tall. Classic lovely yellow and orange mix. Herbalist highly regard its healing gifts. Long blooming season.

Chamomile

Intensely lemon fragrance. Ideal for tea and potpourri. Compact bush habit.

An improved strain of German Chamomile with a high essential oil content.

White blossoms with yellow centers that are sweet and easy to pick. A summer blooming annual that grows to 2' tall.

Basil, Red Rubin

Catnip

A highly vigorous basil with dark purplish-bronze foliage. The green leaf throwbacks have been mostly bred out of this improved strain. A salad of purple basil leaves and yellow tomatoes is awesome.

Cats love this herb but it has lots of human uses - 18 -36� tall, sun, perennial.

Basil, Lemon

Basil, Thai Sweet, anise-like fragrance with a hint of mint and citrus. The 1 ½ to 2 ½" leaves are green at the base of the plant and grow purple towards the flowers - 16 - 20" tall.

Chives Heaviest leaf, great for freezing, drying or immediate use. Pink-purple blossoms. Sun, to part shade, 12" high.

Perennial.

Chives, Garlic Flat leaf. Flavor is a combination of garlic and chives. White flowers. Sun, perennial.

Herbs Cilantro, Santo & Caribe

Lemon Balm, Common

Extra-slow bolting, grown for leaves.

Sun, 18” tall. Produces leaves in generous quantities.

Sun, 18-26" tall, perennial with care.

Great lemon scent, one of my favorite herbs. Herb of the year for 2007.

Dill, Bouquet

Lemongrass, East Indian

Use as dill weed or the mature seed stock for pickles. High yielding with heavier foliage. Sun.

Easy to grow and will produce a good crop of leaves for tea and cooking.

Dill, Fern Leafed Dwarf dill with high leaf yields. Very slow to bolt. Abundant, dark blue-green foliage Great in containers or in small spaces.

Echinacea, Common Also known as Purple Coneflower.

Easiest to grow. Sun or light shade, 2430", perennial.

Fennel, Bronze Leaf Foliage resembles dill. Sun, 24-36" tall, annual in our area.

Hyssop, Anise Nectar for the bees, strongly anisescented, great for tea or seasoning.

Flowers can be dried, has medicinal uses and is perennial, sun, 24 - 30" tall.

Lavender, Munstead Compact strain of English lavender. Sun, 12-18” tall, perennial with care, blueviolent flowers. A tender perennial here depending on your location.

Lovage A great herb, perennial, one of the first to show in the Spring. Reaches heights of 5 to 6'. Young leaves taste like celery and are used in spring tonic salads and with potato and poultry. Has varied medicinal uses. Stake out a large area but it doesn’t take over by spreading wildly.

Marjoram, Sweet, Common Flavor similar to oregano but sweeter and milder. Annual in our area, can be brought indoors for a kitchen plant.

12-24" tall.

Mint, Common Sun to part shade , 18-36" tall, perennial, zone 4. Easy to grow, mint doesn’t grow true to type from seed so variety isn’t stated.

Nasturtium Variety of colors ranging in the yellow/ orange that is great for flavoring butters, cream cheese, etc. Peppery foliage with spicy blossoms. Compact plants.

Oregano, Greek Great for pizza and Italian cooking. Sun 8 - 18" tall, and very perennial. Greek oregano has white flowers.

Herbs Parsley, Moss Curled

Savory, Winter

Curled parsley, 75 days, long, stiff upright stems. Keeps its fresh appearance and deep color over a long season, without bleaching or browning.

6-12" tall. Perennial cousin of summer savory. The leaves are thicker and shinier than summer savory. Flavor is more pungent and biting and has a higher proportion of Thymol than summer. On my short list of favorite herbs.

Parsley, Giant of Italy Huge dark green, leaves, great flavor.

Strong upright stems and high yielding.

Adds true European character to soups and stews.

Rosemary Pine-scented, versatile flavoring for meats and veggies. Likes the sun, height varies in our climate. Sometimes you can winter indoors.

Sage, Common Grey - green leaves, good for dressings, sausage, teas and herbal wreaths. Sun to part shade 16" tall in our area and perennial in zone 4.

Thyme Great in French and Italian recipes, beans and soups. Use fresh or dry.

Good base in herbal wreaths. Often will winter over, depending on harshness of weather and cover. Bees love it a staple in a herb garden.

Thyme, Creeping Sturdy, aromatic ground cover. Slender, creeping stems and round leaves. Can withstand light foot traffic and gives off a pleasant aroma when walked upon.

Drought tolerant when established.

Savory, Summer Grows about 10-18". The standard savory with long internodes on a tall somewhat lanky plant. A flavoring for bean, cabbage, fish and many other foods. Also used for medicinal purposes. Annual.

Peppers Ace, Sweet Bell Pepper

50 days - Green

Amazing yields of medium -sized 3 to 4- lobed, green bell peppers. Nearly every flower produces a pepper.

Apparent resistance to blossom drop even in adverse weather. Glossy green fruits turn red early.

Anaheim, New Mexico Joe E. Parker

70 days - Green

A Southwestern style traditional Anaheim chili pepper. Usually harvested green and used for stuffing, grilling, roasting or processing. Has a thick, crisp flesh with mild heat and excellent flavor. A most productive Anaheim type chili.

Banana Pepper, Sweet

68 days - Yellow

Elongated, 6� long pepper turns scarlet when fully ripe but stay sweets and mild. Delightful in salads, pickled or eaten raw. Famous for its amazing yields. Beautiful pepper.

Carmen Pepper, Sweet

70 Days

A 2006 AAS Winner. Firm tapered fruits growing to about 5 oz, 6" long and 2 ½" wide at shoulders, maturing green to red on upright, leafy plants. A horn - shaped Italian pepper with a noticeably sweeter flavor than other varieties.

Cayenne, Long Red Narrow [HOT]

65 days - Green

Tapered thin-walled, 5-6" long fruits. Dries quickly to a bright crimson red. Early, high yielding. Dark green color changing to bright red and a prolific producer.

Habanero Pepper [HOT] [HOT]

90 Days

Not for the faint of heart. Put in the hottest part of your garden or plant in greenhouse conditions. Not a heavy producer but you only need a few. One of the most fiery peppers in cultivation.

Peppers Hungarian Hot Wax

58 days - Pale Yellow

Dependable and productive. Yellow hot pepper with 5 ½ x 1 ½" smooth, waxy fruits tapering to a point.

Easy to stuff and to peel after roasting. It ripens to orange and then to red. Great for pickling.

Early Jalapeno [HOT]

71 days - Green

Heavy-yielding 3 to 3 ½" blunt end fruit can be eaten green dark green or allowed to ripen to red. Delicious with that distinctive jalapeno flavor.

Lipstick, Sweet

73 Days

Plant produces heavy yields of 4" long by 2" wide sweet peppers. Peppers turn from green to red when mature. Plant has green stems, green leaves, and white flowers. One of the most delicious and sweetest peppers on the market. Excellent for salsa, salads, cooking, and roasting.

Orion, Sweet Bell Pepper

65 days - Green

A large, smooth, thick walled blocky 4 lobed pepper. Around 5" wide, has plenty of foliage and multiple disease resistance.

Poblano

75 Days

A mild pepper measuring 3,000 on the Scoville scale. One of the most popular peppers in Mexico. Fresh it is called Poblano and dried it is called Ancho. Very versatile 6” pepper for fresh, cooked or dried use.

Sweet Frying Pepper, Nardello

76 days - Green

Thin walled frying pepper is usually used green in our area. The shoulder can be from 3/4 - 1 ½" wide, reaching 8" long with a curving tapered point. Turns deep red when ripe with shiny wrinkled skin. A pleasing sweet mild flavor when eaten raw. “Listed on Slow Foods.”

Tomatoes Bellstar Paste

65 Days

Bellstar is a northern favorite for short-season growing. Extremely productive, medium-sized fruit averaging 4-6 oz, square-round red fruit are jointless (pick without stems) and easy to harvest. Use for salsa, sauce and drying because it has less juice and higher soluble solids and viscosity, also best type for fresh cooking. Determinate, compact plant.

Black Cherry

The only truly black cherry tomato, yielding an abundant crop of huge clusters of 1" round, deep purple, mahogany brown cherry tomatoes. Fruits are irresistibly delicious with sweet, rich, complex, full tomato flavors. Mix these with other colored cherry tomatoes. Indeterminate and open pollinated.

Box Car Willie

80 Days

Heirloom tomato, consistent ripening. The fruits are red-orange, heavy yielding, smooth, averaging 10 to 16 oz. Multi-use tomato, crack-free and disease resistant. Indeterminate.

Cherokee Purple

80 Days

Heirloom from Tennessee cultivated by Native American Cherokee tribe. Very productive plants producing loads of dusky rose to purple colored, 12 oz - 1 lb. Beefsteak tomatoes with deep red colors to the interior flesh and dark shoulders. One of the best tasting heirloom tomatoes. Indeterminate.

Costoluto Genovese Tomato

80 Days

An old Italian variety. Produces 5 oz, bright red flattened globes with heavily scalloped edges. Fruit shape is variable from nearly smooth to heavily scalloped and convoluted. Fruits are soft in texture, juicy and slightly tart in flavor. Quite unusual with great flavor. Determinate.

Delicious

77 Days

And it is delicious. A refined selection of a Beefsteak, with most fruits over 1 lb and many larger. Smooth, solid fruits, seldom cracking with excellent flavor, excellent slicer. A Guinness World Record holder at over 7 lbs. (don’t expect that in our northern climate). Indeterminate.

Galina, Yellow Cherry

Siberian, yellow, and one of the best tasting cherry tomatoes, but don’t expect the sweetness of a Sungold.

Flavorful, 1" round fruits, chosen one of the 10 best early tomatoes by Organic Gardening magazine.

Italian Black Plum

70-80 Days

Heirloom tomato with elongated, deep mahogany-brown fruit with a touch of green on the stem end.

Black color develops best in hot day weather. The flavor is rich, complex and full -bodied. Perfect for sauce, drying or eating out of hand. Indeterminate tomato.

Tomatoes Jet Star

72 Days

Jet Star has been around for a very long time. A compact indeterminate tomato. Year after year this early full-sized tomato has been rated best in trial at Highmoor Farm. Ripens prolific quantities of cosmetically perfect 7-8 oz tomatoes with outstanding flavor. The smooth firm fruits almost never scar or crack and have excellent interior and exterior color.

Moskvich Tomato

60 Days

Heirloom tomato. One of the most appealing extra-early tomatoes. Fruits are early, deep red and cold tolerant. Rich taste, smooth and globe-shaped, 4-6 oz., with a small stem scar. An indeterminate tomato with great reviews from fans.

Oregon Spring

58 days

Oregon Spring matures good-sized fruit in August, actually performing best during cool summers. Bears some almost seedless fruits, up to 4" but somewhat variable. Tastes unusually good for such an early variety. Bred and developed from Russian parents by Dr. James R. Baggett of Oregon State University. Potatoleaf foliage. Open pollinated, determinate.

Prudens Purple

67 Days

Early Brandywine type. Large to very large (up to 1.5 lbs.) fruits are flattened and smooth with some shoulder ribbing on a few. Resists cracking and has vivid dark pink skin with crimson flesh. Medium tall, potato leaf plants. Heirloom and indeterminate.

Roma

65 days

A highly popular paste tomato with great disease resistance. Plants are vigorous and strong, producing heavy yields of thick- walled fruit of deep red color and mild flavor. Determinate paste tomato.

Sungold Cherry

57 days

Intense fruity flavor, exceptionally sweet, bright tangerine-orange cherry tomato. Vigorous plants start yielding early and bear right through the season. The taste can’t be beat. Indeterminate.

Sweet Million, Red Cherry

60 Days

Super sweet cherry tomato. Lots of smooth, dark red, 1 - 1 ½" fruits produced on large vigorous plants.

Matures nice and early and continues producing until frost. Indeterminate.

Sweet Olive Grape

57 Days

Sweet red grape tomato. Bite-sized firm, oval-shaped grape tomatoes bursting with flavor. Strong tolerance to heat, humidity and cracking. Plants are manageable without pruning but staking is recommended.

Yellow tomato, early and prolific. Meaty, 4-6 oz, baseball sized, lemon yellow tomatoes. Smooth, blemishfree globes with a small stem scar. Great sweet-flavored and easy to grow. Concentrated early set on compact vines. Determinate and adored by its fans.

Wayahead

63 Days

“Way ahead” when it comes to early ripening. Fruits are good size, bright red, almost round and very smooth. The flesh is solid with true tomato flavor. One of the finest for juice. Our strain of this tomato has all been grown from single plant selections. Determinate growth habit.

White Cherry

59 Days

Appealing, pale yellow cherry tomato averaging 1 1/8 - 1 1/4" in diameter with a good mild taste. Plants are compact and easy to pick. From growing these the color is really pale which adds contrast when serving with other cherry tomatoes. Indeterminate.

Wisconsin 55

65 to 70 Days

A large red slicer developed at the University of Wisconsin in the late 1950’s. One of the last improved OP varieties before hybrids began to dominate the market. Crack-resistant, 6-8 oz. with outstanding flavor.

Yellow Pear

70 Days

An unusual shape of tomato resembling a pear, about the size of a large cherry tomato. With a brilliant yellow color, delicious to eat right out of the garden. They produce an abundance of pear shaped tomatoes. Very sweet (not as sweet as Sungold) mild and fresh flavored adding to the appeal of a salad.

The 2 - 4 lb. solid heads are slightly flattened light green surrounded with dark blue-green waxy wrapper leaves. A vigorous grower even in cold, wet conditions.

Flavor improves with cold weather and is adapted to close spacing.

Primax

Midsized, flat heads stand well without splitting. Leaves are very thin, sweet and crisp. Perfect for coleslaw or stir fry.

Red Express Cabbage

Heads up quickly into a neat and tidy little cabbage, perfect for those who want a smaller portion. Uniform with very nice color, and much, much earlier than standard cabbage varieties.

Cauliflower, Snow Crown

Dependable producer of fully formed curds on 6 -7" heads weighing 1 - 2 lbs.

Always mild and sweet. One of the easiest early cauliflowers to grow.

Celery, Ventura

Open- pollinated. Ventura takes the difficulty out of growing celery. Never harsh flavor even in less than ideal conditions.

Has beautiful, thick, crisp stalks.

Corn, Spring Treat

66 days

Easy to harvest 5' plants, with 7 ½ -8" ears and 14-16 rows of sweet, tender kernels. Excellent eating quality for first early corn. Good cool soil vigor. Earliest yellow sweet corn.

60 days

Good tasting 2-4 lb. heads with short.

Stands without splitting for average of 2 weeks. Non - hybrid for first harvest.

Slender, 8-10" glossy black fruit ready in about 58 days. It is able to set fruit in cool weather as well as under heat stress.

Swallow

1 3/4 x 7". If you didn’t think you can grow eggplant in our cooler climate this variety will make you believe you can.

Kale Mix A mix of two each of Red Russian, Siberian and Lacinato (Dinosaur) Kale.

Leeks, King Richard

In favorable soil and culture, the white stems are over a foot long to the first leaf. Upright, medium green leaves.

Early full sized leek, while not hardy enough for overwintering it will withstand a medium - heavy frost (32 - 20 F)
