I

t’s a bit overwhelming to think about the future. I mean sometimes I can barely make a decision on what I am having for dinner a few hours prior.

But when I think about the times I planned ahead, most of the time it paid off.

This issue of Rural Route is themed around planning ahead, or more specifically succession planning. I feel like if you have been reading or engaging with any agricultural organizations or media outlets in the past few years you are probably groaning thinking – I know, I know, I have heard it before.

We keep bringing it up because 70% of farmland will transfer in the next 20 years. Take a moment to think about that. SEVENTY. The future will be decided either by us or for us through this process.

We are busier than ever before but if we don’t take some time to plan and have some conversations, the impact could be fatal to the agricultural community as we know it. Starting the conversation may feel difficult, but waiting will not make it easier.

I also am very excited to share a dual voices piece. I asked Greg Zwald and his son Andrew Zwald to share their farm’s story.

I wanted them both to write about their experiences so that you could hear each generation share the lessons learned. They have been working through their transition for many years and I am so glad they were willing to share some insights into their process.

You’ll also find a great number of other resources and stories about succession planning. Rural Mutual Insurance Company and Farm Bureau will be hosting transition seminars next March. Dates can be found on page 42.

When you think about the future it might seem daunting but the more work you put in now will pay off for future generations.

What are you going to leave as your legacy?

Have you thought about it?

I promise that succession planning is not just about paperwork or legal decisions.

It is about protecting the people, land and legacy that agriculture is built on. My hope is that this issue encourages you to think about it more intentionally and take one step forward, whether that means asking a question, making a phone call or sitting down at the table with your family. There is no better time to begin than now.

Wisconsin Farm Bureau Welcomes Two New Staff Members W isconsin Farm Bureau Federation has welcomed two new staff members: Ann Marie Magnochi as Foundation Director and Kelly Herness as Administrative and Political Action Coordinator.

Herness began her duties on June 4 and Magnochi began her role on July 6.

Herness Hired as Administrative and Political Action Coordinator

Herness will oversee the operations, communications and fundraising activities of the Volunteers for Agriculture® (VFA®) Political Action Committee. She also will direct the administrative and operational functions of the government relations department.

Herness is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she majored in agricultural and applied economics and life sciences communication.

She also received a certificate in public policy. Herness interned with Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation and U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin’s office, was raised on a dairy and crop farm in western Wisconsin and was involved in Collegiate Farm Bureau and the Association of Women in Agriculture. She also is a former Alice in Dairyland top candidate.

“As a past intern with Wisconsin Farm Bureau, we were impressed with Kelly’s professionalism, work ethic and enthusiasm for Wisconsin agriculture,” said WFBF Executive Director of Governmental Relations Jason Mugnaini. “We are excited to welcome her back to the organization in this full-time role.”

“I am thrilled to be back on staff full-time at Wisconsin Farm Bureau and look forward to using my passion for agriculture and policy communications to support the organization’s grassroots efforts,” Herness said. “It is an honor to join such a talented team of advocates for Wisconsin agriculture.”

Magnochi Hired as Foundation Director

Magnochi will strategize, oversee and manage the operations of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation. She most recently worked as a Marketing Communications Specialist with Select Sires, Inc. and also spent time working with World Dairy Expo.

Magnochi grew up on a dairy farm in Washington state, where her family continues to farm today, and is a graduate of Washington State University.

“Ann Marie brings a great mix of agricultural experience and communications expertise to the Farm Bureau staff,” said WFBF Chief Administrative Officer Bradley Uken. “We look forward to having Ann Marie on the team and her knowledge and skillset to continue to grow the Foundation and its impact across Wisconsin.”

“I am excited to join the Wisconsin Farm Bureau team,” said Magnochi. “Growing up within the agricultural community, I am passionate about supporting Wisconsin farmers and increasing awareness and agricultural literacy for today’s consumers.”

Deciding the Future: WFBF Board Members Travel to D.C.

E

arlier this summer, Wisconsin Farm Bureau board members Dan Meyer and Pete Badtke traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate on behalf of Wisconsin farmers. Throughout a full schedule of meetings with congressional offices, federal agencies and national agricultural organizations, the two directors focused on issues critical to Wisconsin agriculture, including passage of a comprehensive farm bill, expanding trade opportunities and strengthening dairy policy.

The visit began with meeting staff from the offices of Sen. Ron Johnson and Sen. Tammy Baldwin. Meyer and Badtke emphasized the importance of completing a new five-year farm bill and providing farmers with the certainty they need to make long-term business decisions. With ongoing trade negotiations, tariffs and world events continuing to create volatility throughout agricultural markets, they stressed that a comprehensive farm bill would provide a strong policy foundation and demonstrate that Congress understands the challenges facing farmers as they begin planning for the next crop year.

The board directors also met with USDA Farm Service Agency Administrator William Beam, who oversees the agency responsible for administering farm programs, disaster assistance, agricultural lending and conservation initiatives. Administrator Beam provided an update on the rollout of the Farmer Bridge Assistance Program, which will deliver $11.5 billion in assistance to eligible row crop and specialty crop producers impacted by low commodity prices and rising production costs. During the discussion, Meyer thanked Administrator Beam for recent improvements to the Dairy Margin Coverage program while encouraging USDA to continue modernizing the program, 6

so it more accurately reflects today's dairy production costs and the economic realities facing Wisconsin dairy farms.

Trade was another key topic during the trip. Meyer and Badtke met with Marshall Stallings of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to discuss the importance of maintaining strong agricultural trading relationships.

Badtke highlighted how global instability and trade uncertainty continue to influence fertilizer, fuel and other input costs, while Meyer emphasized that expanding export opportunities remains one of the most effective ways to strengthen commodity prices and create new markets for Wisconsin agricultural products.

The trip concluded with a meeting at the National Milk Producers Federation, where the discussion focused on dairy policy and strengthening communication between the national organization and dairy producers. Meyer shared concerns about recent changes to the FARM Program, noting that some program standards appear to be influenced by European production models that do not always align with U.S. dairy practices. Badtke stressed that maintaining dairy farm profitability must remain the industry's top priority and cautioned that unnecessary industry requirements can create burdens for farmers comparable to government regulations.

Advocacy is one of the most important services Wisconsin Farm Bureau provides for its members. Whether meeting with members of Congress, federal agencies or national agricultural organizations, Wisconsin Farm Bureau leaders ensure that the voices of Wisconsin farmers are heard where decisions are being made.

Congress at a Crossroads C

ongress returns from its summer recess facing a full agenda for agriculture. Lawmakers still have significant work to do on priorities important to Wisconsin farmers, including passing a new farm bill, allowing year-round sales of E15 and addressing agriculture's year-round workforce needs. Time, however, is becoming an increasingly scarce commodity. The current farm bill extension expires on September 30, leaving Congress just a few weeks to complete one of the most complex pieces of legislation it considers.

If this sounds familiar, it's because we've been here before. Congress is now approaching the end of the third extension of the 2018 Farm Bill. As with previous deadlines, lawmakers are balancing the need to reach bipartisan agreement while an election cycle quickly approaches. With the possibility that control of one or both chambers of Congress could change after the election, there is added pressure on the current majority to advance its legislative priorities before the political landscape shifts. Whether Congress can capitalize on that urgency will determine if farmers receive the certainty of a new five-year farm bill or face yet another temporary extension.

In June, Congress took another step in that process as Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman released the Senate's version of the farm bill, setting the stage for what could be an important few months for agricultural policy.

The House has already passed its version of the farm bill, while the Senate Agriculture Committee released its proposal in late June. Although both bills share many of the same provisions, they are not identical. Before a farm bill can become law, the House and Senate must pass the exact same legislation.

If the Senate approves a version that differs from the House-passed bill, congressional leaders will appoint a conference committee made up of members from both chambers. The committee's job is to negotiate a compromise by resolving every difference between the two bills. Once negotiators reach an agreement, they produce a single conference report that is sent back to both the House and Senate for a final up-or-down vote. At this stage, lawmakers cannot offer additional amendments; they must either approve or reject the

compromise. If both chambers pass the identical bill, it is sent to the President to be signed into law.

The House and Senate proposals both seek to modernize the farm safety net and provide producers with greater certainty during a period of tight margins, high input costs and market volatility. While the Senate proposal continues to be reviewed, both bills include several priorities important to Wisconsin agriculture:

• A stronger farm safety net by updating commodity programs and increasing reference prices to better reflect today's production costs, reducing the need for ad hoc disaster assistance.

• Improvements to crop insurance, including expanded options for specialty crop producers and additional support for beginning farmers, while reinforcing crop insurance as the primary risk management tool.

• Expanded trade opportunities and policies that strengthen demand for U.S. agricultural products, including provisions encouraging the purchase of domestically produced food in school meal programs.

Congress has demonstrated it can work together to address agriculture's challenges. Now is the time to finish the job. Wisconsin farmers deserve the certainty that comes from a modern five-year farm bill, permanent year-round E15 and a workforce solution that recognizes the year-round labor needs of agriculture. The longer Congress waits, the longer farmers are forced to make long-term business decisions without the certainty they need to continue feeding our nation.

Volunteers for Agriculture® Endorse Tom Tiffany for Governor Rep. Tiffany’s endorsement also comes, in part, from his affirmative support for legislation to allow Wisconsin Farm Bureau to join 14 other states providing Farm Bureau Health Plans to members.

Furthermore, Congressman Tiffany’s strong commitment to protecting Wisconsin farmland, including from acquisition by foreign adversaries and empowering local control over the siting of wind and solar facilities, was extremely important to the committee.

ubernatorial candidate Congressman Tom Tiffany has received the endorsement of Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation’s political action arm, the Volunteers for Agriculture®. The VFA® Committee is made up of 18 farmers appointed by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation’s Board of Directors.

Gubernatorial candidates were surveyed by the VFA Committee in May. After reviewing the results of the survey responses and discussion amongst members of the committee, the VFA made the decision to endorse Tiffany.

“Under Tom Tiffany’s leadership, Wisconsin agriculture will be positioned for growth and success,” said WFBF President Brad Olson. “Led by farmers across our state, the VFA’s decision shows strong confidence in Congressman Tiffany’s appreciation for rural Wisconsin and his commitment to growing the state’s agricultural economy.”

The Volunteers for Agriculture Committee is comprised of 18 farmers from across the state. It was formed to give farmers a more direct role in electing leaders who best represent agriculture’s interests.

“Congressman Tiffany understands Wisconsin agriculture and has a clear record of standing with farmers,” said VFA Committee Chair Austin Vandertie. “His survey responses presented a vision for Wisconsin agriculture that closely aligned with the priorities of our members. His commitment to protecting farmland, supporting the next generation of farmers, reducing unnecessary regulatory burdens, along with his record of leadership on key issues like the Pet and Livestock Act in Congress show his commitment to farmers and resonated strongly with the committee.”

Ag Coalition Takes Advocacy Beyond the Capitol to Engage Future Leaders F ewer lawmakers have direct experience with agriculture, making it increasingly important for the agriculture community to not only advocate but also educate and engage in policy conversations. This summer, Wisconsin Farm Bureau, along with other members of the Wisconsin Ag Coalition, has been doing just that – helping legislators and candidates Engage with Agriculture through a series of ten educational tours.

At events held across the state, candidates and legislators had the opportunity to visit farms and agricultural businesses, hear directly from farmers and agriculturists, meet members of the Ag Coalition which includes a wide range of organizations dedicated to supporting and advancing the state’s agricultural sector and ask questions in a casual, small-group setting.

Interactions like these build connections early on and give lawmakers key contacts for when they need to learn more about agriculture-related legislation in the future.

Lawmakers experienced Wisconsin’s diverse agriculture industry through tours highlighting dairy, lumber, cranberries, specialty crops, grains, exports, agricultural technology and more. Whether attending an event in their district or not, these opportunities were a valuable chance to connect with agriculture and understand its importance for the entire state.

“I do not come from an agricultural background [...] but if I’m going to do this job and really support my constituents, I have to go out and educate myself,” Rep. Karen Desanto said following one of the tours.

“These kinds of opportunities are perfect for me to learn about what is happening, what the needs are and how can I assist.”

Even legislators and candidates from urban districts experienced how agriculture impacts their constituents during a tour of The DeLong Co., Inc. facility at Port Milwaukee. From trucks, trains and ships, the tour was a first-hand view of the importance of infrastructure and urban areas for connecting Wisconsin products with international markets and bolstering the state economy.

The Engage with Agriculture events focused on building relationships with all state legislators and candidates, no matter their political views, to help lay the foundation for a strong connection between Wisconsin’s legislature and agriculture industry during the upcoming 2027-2029 legislative session.

A

t the young age of 26 Austin Vandertie has already accomplished what many spend a lifetime working toward: purchasing his family's farm, navigating the challenges of farm succession and stepping into the role of the next generation.

Today, Austin manages a 40-cow dairy herd alongside approximately 400 acres of farmland, with half of the acreage producing feed for the herd and the remaining acres devoted to cash crops. But his impact extends far beyond the farm gate.

As a volunteer firefighter, community leader and dedicated Door County Farm Bureau member, he's proving that building a strong future for agriculture starts with investing in the people and places around you.

A Farmer from the Start

Growing up on his family's dairy farm near Brussels, Wis., Austin never questioned where he wanted his future to lead.

Farming was part of who he was from the very beginning.

One story in particular has become a favorite in the Vandertie family.

When Austin was about six years old, he was riding with his dad while cutting hay. As they looked across the countryside, his father commented that one day much of the surrounding farmland would likely become houses and buildings.

After a brief moment of silence, Austin looked at his dad and asked, "How am I going to feed my cows?"

Even at six years old, Austin was already thinking like a farmer. From that moment on, there was little doubt that he would return to the family farm.

Following his graduation from UW–Madison in 2022, Austin returned home and stepped into the role he had envisioned since childhood.

Taking Over the Family Legacy

Austin’s parents, Dan and Julie Vandertie, were ready to begin transitioning the farm into his hands after he returned home from college. The transition wasn't something that

happened overnight. It was the result of thoughtful planning, open communication and a shared commitment to preserving the family farm for future generations.

For Austin, taking over the farm wasn't simply about ownership, it was about honoring everything his parents had built while continuing to move the farm forward.

Austin credits his parents for shaping both the farmer and person he has become. Growing up, they instilled the importance of responsibility, attention to detail and taking pride in every task.

"They are only about a half mile down the road, or just a phone call away," Austin said. "They're always there if I need advice or another set of hands."

Like many kids, Austin admits he occasionally tried to take shortcuts, but his parents always seemed to know. They taught him that doing the little things right would ultimately lead to success in the bigger picture, lessons that continue to guide him every day.

Throughout the transition, Austin, his parents, their banker and their accountant met regularly to ensure everyone shared the same vision for the future of the farm. Those conversations required patience, flexibility and a willingness to listen, but allowed every decision to be made with confidence and clarity.

Although his parents have stepped back from the day-today operations, they remain one of his greatest resources and biggest supporters.

Connecting with Community

While much of the daily work falls on his shoulders, Austin doesn't believe farming should consume every hour of the day.

To him, being successful also means investing in the people and communities around you.

That mindset led him to become a volunteer firefighter at just 17 years old. When the local department needed volunteers, Austin and several of his friends saw an opportunity to step up.

"The need was there," Austin said. "So why not me?"

Today, he continues to serve his community as a volunteer firefighter, balancing emergency calls with the demands of running a dairy farm. Whether responding to emergencies, participating in local organizations or staying involved with Farm Bureau, Austin believes giving back has made him a stronger leader and a better farmer.

"Stay connected," Austin said. "Get involved in your community. Join a dart league, meet new people and have some fun."

For Austin, those connections provide perspective during the inevitable challenges that farming brings. On difficult days, he reminds himself that tomorrow is another opportunity.

"There are days that don't go right, and that is okay," he said. "Just keep going, and it will all work out."

Blazing the Trail for Future Farmers

For Austin, succession planning was never simply about transferring assets from one generation to the next. It was about preserving the legacy his parents built while creating opportunities for the future. Their willingness to communicate openly, trust one another and prepare well in advance made the transition smoother for everyone involved.

"Succession planning takes a lot of patience and trust," Austin said. "But if you have a good team around you, it can go really smoothly."

Austin continues to build on that foundation, proving that a successful transition isn't defined by a single signature or closing date, but rather by years of mentorship, preparation and shared goals. He credits the guidance of his parents, along with the support of trusted advisors, to help make the process a positive experience.

As he looks toward the future, Austin hopes his story encourages other farm families to begin succession conversations early. Every family's journey is different, but the principles remain the same: communicate openly, assemble a trusted team and don't be afraid to ask for help. Passing a farm to the next generation is about more than land and livestock; it is about passing on values, responsibility and a commitment to caring for the land and the people who depend on it.

Thanks to careful planning, open communication and a lifetime of preparation, the Vandertie family's legacy is well positioned to continue for generations to come.

What is the H-2A Program?

The H-2A program allows U.S. agricultural employers to bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary or seasonal agricultural jobs. It’s crucial for farmers facing labor shortages, particularly in industries like dairy and crop farming. Here’s what you need to know: • Visa Duration: Worker contracts can be up to a maximum of 10 months in length. There is no minimum length.

COUNTY FB BOARD Every Farm Bureau member has a different story. What first brought you to Farm Bureau, and what made you decide to become involved?

Just after high school, I was elected to the Wood County Farm Bureau board of directors for nine years, plus an additional year as the Wood County YFA chair. In 2023, I was nominated for the YFA Washington, D.C. Fly-In. I took advantage of the great opportunity and traveled to our nation’s capital to meet with elected officials, tour the city and see many monuments. After I got back from the trip, I was asked to be on the WFBF YFA Committee.

Is there a Farm Bureau experience you would like to get more involved with as you continue your membership journey?

Serving in leadership comes with new opportunities and challenges. What's one way Farm Bureau has helped you grow as a person?

I would like to engage with the public more on how farmers grow and raise everyone’s food that is on their tables every day. People have so many questions about farming but are sometimes scared to ask them or don’t have the opportunity. I would like to find a way to bridge that gap for consumers.

The Leadership Institute Class XVI taught me how to be able to talk to anyone about anything. From the media training to public speaking in Washington, D.C., there were many opportunities for the whole class to learn and push each other out of our comfort zones.

After participating in the class, I gained the confidence to run for the WFBF YFA Chair position and look forward to fulfilling that role next year.

If you could give one piece of advice to a young farmer or someone who's thinking about getting involved in Farm Bureau, what would it be?

As the District 8 YFA Representative, you've met members from across the state. What's something you've learned from those relationships?

Saying yes, like I did, is the best way to get involved. Come to the meetings, the tours, the social get-togethers and the conferences. Farmers' livelihoods and Farm Bureau's future depend on those who show up and do the work.

The Future Starts Today

A Message from WFBF's Brad Olson work and sacrifice can be gone in a short period of time. Families left to guess what the parents wanted, opportunities for the next generation at times lost, and generational family farms gone forever.

Creating a succession plan is more than the transfer of assets. It’s about a roadmap to the future, knowledge, relationships and responsibilities, allowing the next generation into leadership while the current one can start to step back.

N

o one can predict the future, but everyone can prepare for the future. In agriculture, one of our greatest responsibilities is preparing for what comes next for our farms and our families. The decisions made today set the path for our families, farms and organizations like Wisconsin Farm Bureau.

For many, the most difficult conversations come around succession planning, yet this is one of the most important discussions a family can have for the future. Many times farms have been in the family several generations of hard work, commitment and dedication.

That time and dedication is why succession planning is so important.

These same principles apply far beyond our farms. They apply to our businesses outside agriculture as well as Farm Bureau itself.

For over one hundred years, we have been successful because previous leaders developed our future leaders.

innovative ideas from our members, all while continuing to work on developing our next leaders.

Just like our farms, succession planning within Farm Bureau is not always an easy conversation. Both require trust, communication and balancing tradition with new ideas.

The best succession plans are the ones not sitting on a shelf collecting dust, but the one out in the open being used on a daily basis.

The strongest farms and organizations are those looking ahead to what comes next. The future will be determined on how well we prepare the next generation to steward our farms, our businesses and our organizations.

So, as the generations before us, let’s do everything we can to make sure the next generations are prepared to carry agriculture and Farm Bureau forward, keeping us strong for generations to come.

he challenges and opportunities facing agriculture today are constantly changing. Markets shift, new policies are proposed, and consumer expectations continue to evolve. Keeping up with everything that affects agriculture can feel like a full-time job on top of the one farmers and ranchers already have: producing the food, fuel and fiber America depends on.

That's why I'm proud that Farm Bureau is continuing to invest in resources that help our members stay informed, grow as leaders and prepare for what’s ahead. Earlier this month, we launched Farm Bureau Intel, a new resource designed to deliver timely, easy-to-understand insights on the issues shaping agriculture.

Growing the Next Generation of Leaders Having reliable information is important. Knowing how to turn that information into action is just as important. That’s where Farm Bureau University comes in. It gives members access to online courses they can complete whenever it fits in their schedule, whether that’s at the kitchen table after supper or during a break in the tractor. The courses are designed to help farmers and ranchers strengthen their leadership, communication and advocacy skills while balancing the demands of farm life.

For members who want to take their leadership a step further, Farm Bureau Campaign School provides nonpartisan training on what it takes

to run for public office. At the request of state Farm Bureaus, our staff brings these workshops directly to farmers and ranchers across the country. Over the past four decades, thousands of graduates have completed the program, and 82% have gone on to win elected office. Those results are pretty impressive, but what excites me even more is seeing Farm Bureau members step forward and give back to their communities through public service.

These are just a few of the ways Farm Bureau is helping farmers and ranchers build the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead, both on the farm and beyond it.

Investing in the Future of Agriculture Farm Bureau’s greatest strength has always been our grassroots members. Every county leader or young farmer willing to step up makes this organization stronger. Preparing agriculture for the future isn’t just about solving today’s challenges. It's about investing in the people who will lead tomorrow.

The decisions that shape agriculture aren't made by chance. They’re shaped by informed, engaged leaders who are willing to step up and speak on behalf of farmers and ranchers. Helping develop those leaders today is one of the best investments we can make in the future of agriculture.

A Son’s Version: Our Farm’s Story

W

hen I first started working on our family farm, I lived five hours away. I came home on weekends and saw the exciting parts of the business: the busy harvest days, happy customers and everything that made farming rewarding. What I didn’t see was all the planning, decision-making, financial management and long-term thinking that happened behind the scenes.

When I told my dad and mom that my family wanted to move closer to the farm and become more involved, my dad made the decision to take an off-farm job. That allowed the farm to support my family while giving me the opportunity to step into a leadership role. He was still involved and continued making some of the major decisions, but he also trusted me to make decisions of my own.

Some worked well, and some didn’t, but having him available to answer questions while still allowing me to learn was invaluable.

One thing I learned is that succession planning doesn’t happen on its own. After working on the farm for a couple of years, my wife and I said, “We are all in on the farm as a big part of our future, what does that actually look like?” That conversation became the starting point.

Together, my parents, our attorney, and our family built a plan that balanced several priorities. We wanted to recognize the sweat equity I was investing into growing the business while also making sure the plan was fair to my sisters who do not work on the farm. Rather than simply transferring the entire farm, we developed a structure where much of the business could gradually transition over time while my parents retained ownership of most of the land, which the business would lease back through long-term rental agreements.

Those meetings with our attorney covered far more than ownership percentages. We discussed what would happen if one parent passed away before the other, how disagreements might be handled, who would inherit different assets and how to communicate those decisions openly with my siblings.

None of those conversations were easy, but they were necessary.

Having everyone understand the plan reduces uncertainty and helps preserve family relationships.

Because we grow perennial crops like blueberries and Christmas trees, we also had to think about long-term land access. If you’re investing years into establishing a crop, you need confidence that you’ll still have the right to harvest it.

We also discussed practical details like driveway easements and other property considerations that are easy to overlook but can create major headaches later.

My advice to other farm families is to make succession planning a priority during the winter months.

Schedule multiple meetings, keep the momentum going and have a plan in place before the demands of planting season take over.

Every farm family is different.

Every financial situation is different. There isn’t a onesize-fits-all succession plan.

But I believe having a plan – even one that changes over time – is far better than leaving the next generation to ‘figure it out’ after you’re gone.

Today, my wife and I are raising our daughter and son. Maybe neither of them will choose farming, or maybe one of them will. My hope is simply that we’ve built a successful business with a clear succession plan so they have the opportunity to choose. To me, that’s what succession planning is really about; creating clarity for today while preserving opportunity for tomorrow.

As the younger generation, one thing I wish had happened differently is that the succession planning process had been initiated by the older generation instead of us having to ask for it. We had talked about a succession plan for years, but it took a couple of winters before we finally sat down, met with our attorney and put the plan in writing.

y wife Irma and I have three grown children. We own land, buildings and machinery. In addition to that, we have saved and invested in IRAs and have some savings and stocks. In 2012, l left a successful dairy farm to start a u-pick berry farm and ag tourism business: White Pine Berry Farm. We purchased this farm in 2012 when I left the dairy.

When planning for the future, each child knew that any or all of them could join us in our new venture. All of them helped us in varying degrees as we grew our new business. In 2018, our son Andrew told us he would like to work for us and become a part of the business.

We shared that he would work for us for three years and if all was going

We also openly talked about our concern there would not be enough farm income to support two families, meaning off-the-farm job(s) would be necessary. The timing of a job opportunity actually came for me as there was an opening for the farm director position at UW-River Falls, my old alma-mater. Andrew took over the day-to-day management of White Pine Berry Farm, and I (a 66-year-old farmer) accepted the farm director position for five years at UW-River Falls. This was what I called a surprise blessing. It truly allowed our son to take over running the farm.

Now I'm 73 and I am truly happy that the management decisions are in our son’s hands.

I was blessed with progressiveminded parents who planned and set up a successful transfer of assets to my brother and me. Although the same laws and rules didn’t apply in 2020 as they did in 1974, the mindset to set up a successful transfer of assets started with my parents.

My wife and I decided that our assets as of 2018 would be divided equally between our three married children. Growth in our assets from that point would go to our son who joined the farm. We have designated certain parcels of land to go to each child or their children, and in the event of the death of my wife and

myself, the land associated with the farm we purchased would go to our son, with the other siblings getting the majority of the more liquid assets.

In addition to that, our son and his wife are now part-owners of White Pine Berry Farm. That entity consists of 20 acres, the machinery and a retail building and shop work area that was built in 2019. Our son and his wife are currently 30% owners of the business, with more assets transferred each year. Andrew is paid a salary, but it is lower than what he could be earning. The ownership transfer is his ‘sweat equity’.

It’s important to work with an expert as these details were worked out with the help of our attorney. Our farm tax accountant played a big role in the plan, too. My wife and I have shared all of this openly with our three children.

No part of this is easy. It takes a lot of planning, but then at some point, decisions need to be made. We know our plan is not perfect, but we are confident that if something happens to both of us, the farm will go on and each of our children will have a nice inheritance.

he simple principle that decisions are made by those who show up may be as old as self-governance itself. As Americans, we are fortunate to have the opportunity and responsibility to choose who leads us, but as with everything else, life gets in the way if you let it. Long days in the barn or the field, family obligations and a never-ending to-do list can leave little time for political engagement.

That’s why the I Farm. I Vote. campaign is important. It helps farmers and farm neighbors stay engaged and informed about issues and candidates and have their say on Election Day. It also helps ensure candidates pay attention to the issues that matter to farmers and rural areas.

The number of farms and farmers has been decreasing nationwide for years, making it more important than ever for those of us who understand the challenges facing farmers and rural communities to be part of the process. As young farmers, those of us with skin in the game are obligated to make sure the people who are asking for our votes know what we are up against, as well as how the decisions we are empowering them to make directly affect us.

Elected officials who don’t come from a farm background, and that’s the majority these days, may not know what goes into keeping a farm going day-to-day. Through my work with Wisconsin Farm Bureau and Volunteers for Agriculture®, I help bring the issues that are important to farmers to the attention of candidates, such as transportation, taxes, conservation, trade, energy, succession planning and regulation.

We do outreach to candidates, educational events, farm

visits, candidate endorsements and more. But when it comes to shaping outcomes in politics, nothing speaks louder than your vote in the ballot box.

I Farm. I Vote. is an ongoing effort to bring attention to the importance of voting and being informed through social media, signs, publications and peer-to-peer interactions at local events. It is intended to make it as easy as possible for farmers to keep track of their local races, the positions of state and federal candidates, election dates and opportunities to vote early, absentee or at your local polling place.

Your vote helps shape the future for your family, your community and our state and nation. No matter how hectic life gets, we cannot afford to let others make our choices for us at the ballot box. Keeping that top of mind is why the I Farm. I Vote. campaign matters; we all owe it to ourselves and our families to keep showing up.

Farm Family Business: Make Sure to Plan

F

arm family businesses are very different from any other familyowned business.

Whether you compare it to a construction company, hardware store, landscaping business, or law firm, it’s just different.

A farm is a living and breathing entity.

It grows crops, animals, and people. A farm feeds, clothes, and houses a family for years and years, continuously, with no breaks.

The farm even has its own seat at the table, all the tables in fact. At the boardroom table, breakroom table, and kitchen table.

Have you noticed this? The farm even sits at the head of every table.

(Gosh, if the farm only knew the power that it has.)

A couple of things come to mind as I ponder why.

First of all, farm businesses have longevity. Spanning hundreds of years, generation after generation, the actual farm itself has been sitting at the table longer than anyone.

It has weathered all the financial ups and downs, droughts, blights, and blizzards. Birth and death, teardowns and building projects. All the storms.

Yet it stays, constant and vigilant, growing, changing…breathing.

Second, there is family involvement from the bottom to the top; 2-year AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2026

-olds ride in tractors with their parents, and they learn every inch of the land. While at the same time, grandfathers are trying desperately to catch up and grasp the latest technology so they can continue to plant corn and mow hay in their fields until their very last day on this earth.

It’s love.

Each end of the spectrum has a different connection to the farm business, which is deeply rooted and cannot be taken away.

I see this in my children, their love of the land. Their love of the farm business.

To them, the farm is very much alive and breathing. When they come home from college, they can’t wait to go see what’s going on at the farm. The projects, the people, the bunks, the cows. Summer vacation has always meant fieldwork, farm business decisions, and conversations.

They have been a part of all of them!

It’s odd and beautiful all at the same time.

Most of us have felt, at one time or another, that “the farm” has more power than anything else. At times, it can feel as if the farm is more important than the individuals running it every day. This can be especially the case when you are a young in-law. You learn, though, and definitely appreciate it as you see your family thrive.

To keep things in perspective, it’s not the farm, it’s the people running it. For various reasons, it’s the people who allow the farm to become so large that it can shackle them, and thus cripple the entire farm business.

As a result, decisions can be stalled, transitions smothered, and progress stopped.

It’s usually a fear of losing the farm and embracing the changes necessary to keep it going, which fuels this problem. The “farm’s” seat at the table becomes too large and disproportionate in size to all of the individuals. Until one day, when it can’t fit at the table anymore, the farm business fails, and the family disperses.

A solution: Succession planning.

One of the primary reasons families lose their farm businesses is a lack of succession planning.

Succession plans create the guardrails to keep everyone and everything in perspective. It’s a map drawn to manage the expected and unexpected.

Consider: The succession plan protects the farm’s seat at the table. It’s the policy and the framework built to usher in the next generation in a timely, detailed, and intentional way. As our own farm business prepares for the next crop of kids, there is a plan in place. A working plan, constantly tended to.

Started with my children’s grandparents, father, and uncles, they laid the foundation for buy-in, transition, and buy-out. For almost 30 years, it has evolved to help the business through divorce, partner changes, land acquisitions, and a new generation.

Constantly under scrutiny, tweaked, and discussed, it’s a working plan. It’s a map to go to when times get chaotic during change.

The plan provides the family with peace of mind, both financially and emotionally.

It takes time and thought, and professionals to guide us through the process.

The time is now. Most of you are either farming or interacting with farm families every day. You know the businesses that need to get planning, and those that have a plan solidly in place.

You don’t have to get it right or know how to do it. You just have to get it going.

For the sake of your family…and the sake of the farm.

Farm Bureau Supports Wisconsin FFA Convention W

isconsin Farm Bureau was well represented at the 2026 Wisconsin FFA Convention, June 15-18, at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Several Farm Bureau members and staff served as judges of the leadership development events, including the Discussion Meet which is sponsored by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation.

WFBF teamed up with Rural Mutual Insurance Company for an interactive display at the Career Expo featuring the Farm Bureau program areas as well as games such as Guess Who and Plinko. FFA members learned about future Farm Bureau opportunities and received t-shirts, stickers and snacks for their participation.

WFBF Agriculture in the Classroom Intern Victoria Havlik presented a workshop highlighting Food for America lessons, tools and resources in hopes of helping FFA members grow agricultural knowledge in their community. Wisconsin Farm Bureau is a proud sponsor of FFA and the next generation of agriculturists.

McDonald Wins State FFA Discussion Meet

A

shley McDonald of the Belmont FFA Chapter was named the state winner of the FFA Discussion Meet. The Discussion Meet was held at the 97th State Convention of the Wisconsin Association of FFA in Madison, Wisconsin.

McDonald’s advisor is Eric Heisner.

The Discussion Meet tests the abilities of FFA members in cooperatively discussing agricultural issues, exchanging ideas and information, and finding solutions to issues or problems. Modeled after the Farm Bureau Discussion Meet, contestants give a 30-second opening statement, participate in 15-minutes of discussion and finish with a one-minute closing statement. To qualify for the state finals, students must compete in several other contests including district contest, sectional contest, and finally the state semi-finals in Madison.

Recognized chapters submitted a portfolio of agricultural literacy activities completed between May 1, 2025 – April 30, 2026. The reported combined impact of chapter agricultural literacy programs include:

• 280 events and programs held by Wisconsin FFA Chapters • 30,700+ Pk-12 students impacted by FFA Food for America agricultural literacy programs • 5,133 volunteers supported chapter agricultural literacy events and programs

Cultivating Passion TOWARDS PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

T

he family farm holds a special place in American hearts. As farmers, we have built a deeply-rooted passion for our profession and respect from all facets of society. Simply put, we are an American treasure that everyone wants protected, thriving and to continue on for generations to come. Farms come in all shapes, sizes and types. From first generation to century farms, we all share a passion for stewardship of our land and care of our livestock. Our pathways to how we got to where we are today and what we are planning for the future are always unique to each of our farms.

My family farm is not an exception to this theory. Both of my parents were born into agriculture and farming dominates our heritage for many generations. However, my father was, in some respect, a first-generation farmer.

Certainly not in terms of knowledge or support, but in 1974, my parents started out on their own, renting a modest dairy barn and acreage. Buying cows, purchasing equipment, getting by with what they had. Ten years later in 1984, they were able to accomplish the dream for most, purchasing a farm of their own. It certainly was not easy with the 1980s interest rates and the depressed market prices of the 1990s and early 2000s, but we sure had a great life as kids growing up on our farm.

Just as our farm has changed a lot from 1974, yours may have too. So, it is crucial your succession plan stays up to date as your farm continues to evolve to your ideals and build your legacy.

I mentioned that family farms are an American treasure embraced by our society. I truly believe that. It is very important that agriculture maintains that status. We need to tell our story, continue good stewardship and engage in civic endeavors that continue to build that respect. Whether that is striking up a conversation in a grocery store, inviting people to visit your farm, attending a farmers market or county fair, or most importantly, finding your unique way of engaging with consumers to make and cultivate that meaningful connection. We want our grandchildren‘s succession story to be just as amazing as ours!

It is predicted that 70% of farms will change ownership in the next 20 years. As caretakers of American agriculture, it is our duty to place that honor in the hands of those we trust will continue our great industry.

Today, we look very different compared to 1974 or 1984.

The dairy herd is no longer here and many crops have come and gone as need and profitability dictated. Over the years, we have grown crops of field corn, soybeans, oats, wheat, alfalfa, clover, green beans and sweet corn.

In line with our succession plan, the land is still owned by my parents and we both have significant ownership in machinery. Management and shares are run on a 50:50 basis, leaving neither my parents or myself and my wife, Ashley, more important than the other to the future of the farm.

Succession planning…It can often be a daunting and frustrating term for lots of farms and families. Succession planning can be the downfall of a farm just as quick as an unexpected health tragedy or severe financial setback. It can also be a great asset to the legacy of the family farm if well planned and executed.

So when should succession planning start? I might suggest that it can start as early as the day your first child is born.

I feel it is critical that passion is a major factor in succession planning. Do the people you intend to pass your legacy onto have a passion for it? Also, identifying which family members do and/or do not wish to take on such a significant role. Having that serious talk with your family is critical to succession planning. It is step one.

Grassroots in Action F

arm Bureau prides itself on being a grassroots organization. Members belong to one of the 61 county Farm Bureaus.

Throughout the state, local members advocate for Farm Bureau and agriculture in a variety of ways. Here are some of the activities and projects happening locally.

Walworth County Youth Tractor Safety Course

Walworth County Farm Bureau hosted a Youth Tractor Safety Course for youth ages 12–14 seeking certification to operate farm equipment on public roads. Led by instructor Sydney Bender, agricultural educator at Big Foot High School, participants completed a series of classroom lessons, hands-on simulations and practical training exercises designed to prepare them for real-life situations on the farm.

Course topics included grain entrapment awareness, first aid and safe tractor operation.

Columbia County Christmas Tree Farm Tour

The Columbia County Farm Bureau Young Farmer and Agriculturist Committee and Promotion and Education Committee sponsored a tour of Miller Christmas Tree Farm in Rio in the spring. The farm grows and sells trees directly to consumers during the holiday season. They also make a variety of wreaths. Rex Miller talked about farming Christmas trees, the basics to making wreaths and a young member got to help plant new plugs.

Dodge County Agriculture Estate and Succession Planning The Dodge County Young Farmer and Agriculturist Committee partnered with Rural Mutual to host an Agriculture Estate and Succession Planning event. Tom Murphy, Brandon Mueller and Rick Bollenbeck shared valuable insights with more than 30 attendees, helping farmers and families better understand how to protect and plan for the future of their operations. It was a great opportunity to learn about strategies that help ensure farms and agricultural businesses can continue for generations to come.

Grant County Data Center Informational Meeting

Grant County Farm Bureau hosted a community-wide data center informational meeting at the county fairgrounds to provide residents with a deeper understanding of data centers and their potential impact on the community. Presentations covered local zoning considerations and water usage, Wisconsin Farm Bureau’s policy, resources related to data center development and how the rapidly evolving, AI-driven world is increasing the demand for data centers. The evening also provided an opportunity for attendees to ask questions, followed by conversation. More than 100 community and Farm Bureau members attended this event.

Eau Claire County Beef Night Out

Eau Claire County held their 3rd Annual Beef Night Out to celebrate May Beef Month. Almost 300 people attended to see cutting demonstrations, tour Off The Rail Meats, meet with local beef farmer and enjoy locally produced beef products.

Sauk County Freezer Meal Workshop Sauk County Farm Bureau Farm Neighbors Care program and Farmers Angel Network hosted a freezer meal workshop for farm and rural families at the Plain Library community room. This program helped others stock their freezer with easy, ready-to-cook meals. It was a good day to socialize with many entrepreneurs and to make meals to take home in a Farm Bureau insulated freezer bag. Sauk County Farm Bureau looks forward to hosting similar events in the future.

Waushara County Tractor Safety Course

Waushara County Farm Bureau received a grant from Rural Mutual Insurance Company to help sponsor a tractor safety course through Fox Valley Technical College. Waushara County Farm Bureau also partnered with Rural agents Victor Magnus and Molly Dahlke to provide lunch for all the participating students.

Polk Burnett Member Meeting Polk Burnett Farm Bureau celebrated June Dairy Month by holding their member meeting at Friendshuh Farms near Clear Lake. Members gathered for an evening of networking, dairy treats and a guided farm tour highlighting the Friendshuh family’s dairy farm. The event also provided an opportunity for members to visit with local leaders, including several Polk County Board Supervisors and candidates for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District.

Clark County Summer Picnic

Clark County Farm Bureau hosted its annual summer picnic at Longwood Park, giving members a unique opportunity to connect one-on-one with candidates seeking election this fall. Candidates running for Wisconsin Assembly and Senate seats introduced themselves before taking questions from members in attendance.

The discussion focused on a variety of issues impacting local farms, allowing members to hear directly from the candidates while sharing the concerns facing Wisconsin agriculture.

Waupaca County Strawberry Fest Event

Waupaca County Farm Bureau’s Promotion and Education Committee hosted a display at Strawberry Fest in Waupaca in June. The display featured a corn sensory pool, coloring pages, farm facts and more.

Summer Slaw with Kohlrabi

INGREDIENTS

• 2 medium kohlrabi cut into sticks • 2 apples cut into sticks • 1cup of shredded carrots • 2 Tbsp. Apple cider vinegar • ¼ cup Mayo

• 2 Tbsp. Mustard • 3 Tbsp. Honey • 2 Tbsp. Lemon juice • Fresh parsley to taste • Salt and Pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS 1.Mix together all ingredients. Refrigerate at least an hour before serving.

Note: This recipe is very customizable!

Wisconsin Berry Muffins INGREDIENTS

• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup granulated sugar • 2 tsp. baking powder • ½ tsp salt • 2 eggs

INSTRUCTIONS

• ½ cup butter, melted • ½ cup milk • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 2 cups (1 pint) fresh blueberries, washed and drained

• 1/2 cup dried cranberries (optional) • Coarse sugar for topping (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners.

2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter and eggs. Add the milk and vanilla extract and whisk until fully combined.

4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir just until combined. Do not overmix.

5. Gently fold in the blueberries and dried cranberries.

6. Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups, filling each about ¾ full.

7. If desired, sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of coarse sugar over the top of each muffin.

8. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

9. Allow muffins to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

DATCP Board Honors Essay Contest Winners T he Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Board opened its July meeting by honoring the winners of the 2026 Wisconsin Agriculture in the Classroom Essay Contest with a reading of the winning essays and an awards presentation.

The 2026 essay contest, Dig into Wisconsin Soil… Where Good Things Grow, received over 1,100 essay entries from fourth and fifth grade students across the state. The fourth grade first place winner was Kalvin Schneider, Chilton Area Catholic School in Calumet County, and the fifth grade first place winner was Nellie Jo Erickson, a home school student in Juneau County.

received an award plaque and a $250 cash prize. The students, their families and their teachers enjoyed a reception complete with dirt dessert cups to celebrate the outstanding work of these young writers.

Over 36,000 students have participated in the essay contest since its inception in 2005. The annual essay contest is supported by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation and leading partners Compeer Financial, Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board, AgCountry Farm Credit and GreenStone Farm Credit.

s Wisconsin farmers move equipment between fields, our roadways become busier with vehicles of all shapes and sizes. For farmers, safely navigating these interactions requires a combination of preparation and awareness.

To help keep everyone safe during busy seasons, Inspector Kory Schultz with the Wisconsin State Patrol offers these five essential road safety tips.

1. Prioritize Farm Equipment Maintenance

Prioritizing farm equipment maintenance is a critical step in ensuring safe travel on Wisconsin roadways, where agricultural machinery often shares space with fastermoving vehicles. Before hitting the road, ensure your machinery is in good working condition, whether it’s a Class A tractor, farm implement or tractor-trailer.

Always perform a thorough check, specifically focusing on brakes and tires, which are your first point of contact with the road and essential for maintaining control, especially when carrying heavy loads or traveling on uneven rural routes. Beyond that, inspect steering systems, hydraulic lines, and hitch connections to confirm everything is secure and responsive. It’s also important to check that mirrors provide a clear rear view and that any wide equipment is properly marked.

2. Understand Regulations and Registration

It is vital to know when your activities fall under “exempt” farm operations versus “commerce” because it affects which laws and regulations apply to you.

Moving equipment from field to field or farm to farm is generally “exempt” from certain federal regulations, including USDOT requirements and driver’s license mandates for operators, especially if you are operating within a specific distance from your farm and not hauling goods for hire.

However, once you enter the act of “commerce” when you are operating more like a commercial carrier, such as providing custom farm work or hauling product that is not your own, these exemptions are not valid, and stricter rules typically apply.

For farmers driving on Wisconsin roads, this distinction matters because it determines what safety standards, AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2026

When operating agricultural machinery on public roads, ensure that all required lights and flashers are not only present but properly functioning, as visibility plays a major role in preventing collisions. This includes: • Headlights • Taillights • Flashing amber warning lights that are visible in low-light or poor weather conditions.

• Displaying clean and clearly visible Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) emblems on the rear of equipment is critical, as these reflective triangles alert approaching drivers to reduced travel speeds.

• Use reflective tape or markings along the sides of wide implements to improve nighttime visibility.

4. Drive Defensively

Farmers must be defensive drivers on the road, anticipating the behavior of motorists who may be unfamiliar with agricultural equipment or impatient when encountering slower-moving vehicles. Civilians are often not expecting large machinery, especially on rural highways or during peak travel times, which increases the need for constant awareness and proactive decision-making.

When preparing to make a left-hand turn into a field or driveway – one of the most dangerous maneuvers – signal early, reduce speed gradually and continuously check mirrors for approaching traffic. If necessary, you may need to utilize more of the roadway to clearly communicate your intent and prevent others from attempting to pass while you are maneuvering. This positioning can act as a visual cue to drivers that a turn is imminent, reducing confusion and risk. Remember, passing an implement of husbandry in a no-passing zone is against the law but always expect the unexpected.

5. Follow Protocol if an Accident Occurs

If an accident happens, focus on safety first: • Move to safety: If possible, move to the side of the road to avoid traffic.

• Check for injuries: Assess the situation and, if anyone is injured, call 911 immediately.

• Report the incident: Do not delay! Call 911 to get emergency services and law enforcement on the scene.

• Document everything: Once the scene is stabilized, have your identification, insurance information and any relevant documentation ready for law enforcement. If you have a dash camera, the footage can be valuable for providing an unbiased view of the incident. w f b f. co m
