Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity.

They give young people – from all backgrounds – the opportunity to realise their full potential through a range of practical enterprise programmes, from one day masterclasses to yearlong projects. Students from Weymouth College are able to participate in three different schemes – Route to Work, Tenner Challenge and the Company Programme. Open to 16-25 year olds, the Prince’s Trust Team programme is a 12-week personal development course offering work experience, practical skills, community project, qualifications and a residential.

No matter what you’re studying, if you enjoy sport and the outdoors we have amazing facilities and opportunities to join teams, get fit, stay healthy, learn something new and just have fun. And when you’re taking part you’ll be gaining valuable skills that employers look for, such as leadership, team work, decision making, performing under pressure, as well as making new friends.

WEYMOUTH COLLEGE IN THE NEWS! We’ve had an exciting year with lots of things happening across the campus. This year we’ve been awarded not one, but two Beacon Awards, our HIX Academy have won a sustainability award, we’ve improved our facilities and now have a College Square with a performance space plus much, much more. To see all of our latest news visit www. weymouth.ac.uk/news Staff and students celebrate winning two coveted “Further Education Oscars” (February 2015) Staff and students celebrated as Weymouth College won two prestigious Association of

Colleges (AoC) Beacon Awards; one for Careers Education and Guidance and the other for Sport in the Curriculum. The awards, sponsored by UCAS Progress and VTCT, respectively, were presented to the college by George Freeman MP, Under-Secretary of State for Life Sciences, at the AoC Beacon Awards National Presentation Ceremony in London on Wednesday 4 February 2015.

For the UCAS Progress Award for Careers Education and Guidance, the college introduced a special ‘Careers College’ through partnerships with the County Council, the Economic Regeneration Unit, the regional university, employers, other colleges and schools. The

partnership, led by Weymouth College, sees an annual twoday event for Year 9 and 10 pupils consisting of workshops and a careers fair.

The Sports initiative builds on Weymouth College’s aim to be in the top 10% of further education colleges in England providing a high quality and inclusive sports curriculum for all levels and abilities. It works closely with partners to build on the legacy of hosting the sailing events in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games and it aims to be recognised as a centre of excellence in meeting the priority skills needs of the local and regional community.

Mark was joined by a number of other music professionals who were invited to take part in the week-long event. The event, in its second year, draws upon the knowledge and experience of professionals who work in the music industry in order to share them with current students to give them an insight into the industry. Topics that speakers covered included their own route into the music industry, how to get funding as a musician, how to secure gigs and how to be successful.

College secures Big Lottery Funding (March 2015) Lucky students from Weymouth College took part in a journey of a lifetime thanks to a Big Lottery Fund grant.

Participating in a ‘Youth in Action’ project, 12 students, three from Maritime Skills and nine from the Step-up course joined forces with students from London to set sail for four days on Monday 30th March.

The voyage was designed to bring students from rural and urban locations together and saw the students step aboard the Tall Ship Pelican, which is part of the ‘Adventure Under Sail’ charity based in Weymouth.

Funding of £5,300 was secured from the Big Lottery Fund, to enable the 12 students, who had challenging backgrounds to participate. The opportunity to join the project arose after the Maritime Skills students worked

with the ‘Adventure Under Sail’ charity on an 11-week boat building programme.

We want you to enjoy your experience with us and we offer support to help you achieve your full potential.

The Student Support team provides information, advice, help and support at every stage, sensitively and in confidence. The team works closely with teaching staff to ensure an effective support system for each student, according to individual needs.

INFORMATION, ADVICE & GUIDANCE (IAG) We offer free impartial information, advice and guidance to school leavers and adults thinking about studying at any level. We can help you with:

• student finance • choosing the right study programme • career identification and career change • CV development, application forms and interview techniques • further and higher education • support with UCAS application process.

ADDITIONAL LEARNER SUPPORT There is a wide range of support to all students with additional needs from learning difficulties to mental health issues, dyslexia to special examination requirements. Services offered include; personal mentoring, support for mobility or sensory requirements, classroom support, learning resources, loan of specialist equipment and workshops.

CAREERS AND HIGHER EDUCATION As a student you will have access to a careers programme which is supported by our online virtual learning environment, Moodle. There are opportunities to complete activities such as CV writing, interview preparation and one-to-one appointments with an advisor. Many students who complete studies at the College progress to university. We guide and support any student who wishes to apply by helping them research suitable study programmes and universities.

The Student Council is the students’ voice to help make improvements at the College. The council provides student support, representation for students and organises social activities.

Through the National Union of Students (NUS), students at the College have a national voice and opportunities to participate in national campaigns, events and conferences on a variety of issues which affect students.

SAFEGUARDING Our students feel safe here and we are dedicated to maintain this. A safeguarding culture is actively promoted within the College; incidents of bullying, intimidation and harassment will be acted upon immediately. The College has a senior member

of staff who leads on safeguarding along with a team of trained Safeguarding Officers. Immediate access to a Safeguarding Officer is available to all students and staff at college. The College ensures that safe recruitment practices are followed when employing staff and volunteers.

COUNSELLING AND MULTI-FAITH CHAPLAINCY Counselling is a confidential service available to all students at the College whether full-time or part-time.

Experienced counsellors are available for one-to-one confidential appointments. The College Chaplaincy team has a dedicated multi-faith room which is used for prayer or quiet contemplation and is open to all.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT We are able to support claims for financial assistance, providing the student meets the required criteria.

APPRENTICESHIPS & WORK-BASED LEARNING If you’re already employed or want to train on the job, an Apprenticeship or Work-Based Learning (WBL) qualification will allow you to get qualified, get paid and get a career all in one go. To do an Apprenticeship, you need to be able to demonstrate that you have the potential, motivation

and commitment needed to gain the high quality skills demanded by business and industry.

Although you do not need any formal qualifications to start, you shouldn’t be fooled into thinking they’re an easy option. Apprenticeships can be demanding, but also very rewarding.

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain valuable work experience and some of the most successful chefs and business people all started their careers as apprentices.

Before you start, you’ll undertake a selection test and will be interviewed by one of our assessors. The assessor will identify your suitability for the programme, so it’s important to demonstrate your commitment and motivation.

If you’re not already in employment, we’ll put you forward for interviews with suitable employers. If we don’t have a suitable placement, we’ll advise you on how to look for and secure an Apprenticeship place for yourself.

How does it work?

You’ll work with your employer to gain skills within the workplace. Most of your training will take place with your employer and college attendance will vary according to which level and which vocational area you’re in.

A learning plan will be drawn up to determine what’s best for you as an individual and you will receive guidance and support from one of our assessors.

The IT industry is at the heart of everyday life and central to making any business work. The industry covers a wide range of roles and requires some technical knowledge, from the methodical skills of a software developer to the management skills of a project manager. This study programme is taught in a dedicated computer suite and will develop your skills in software such as Python, Adobe Dreamweaver and Photoshop.

One of the largest areas for employment in the IT industry is software development and this study programme will help you to develop a wide range of skills with a specific focus on computer programming and software development.

For students aged 18-25 with additional needs, this programme provides an opportunity to access a work programme with support. Matched to employers, students will gain experience in a real work environment and work towards a qualification in Employability and Training.

There are 3 Music and 3 Dance, Acting and Musical Theatre companies, each geared for work and study in a subject and at a level that is right for you. The work undertaken in each company leads to a different qualification achievement over 3 distinct phases.

By the end of phase 3, you will be more confident and experienced in both performance and production techniques.

The qualification you will achieve is Level 2 Diploma in Music and Music Technology.

COMPANY 2 MUSIC u

The two year programme of study in Company 2 aims to provide you with the skills needed to succeed in the music industry or progress to Higher Education.

In phases 1 and 2 you will study, rehearse and perform music in a range of styles from pop to jazz. You will also develop your theoretical skills, use computer software to compose and study both music history and the music business. There are extensive opportunities to develop solo and ensemble performance skills as part of the course, including performances on the campus and gigs in the locality.

The qualification you will achieve is a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music.

COMPANY 2 - MUSIC TECHNOLOGY u

The two year programme of study in Company 2 aims to provide you with the skills needed to succeed in the music technology industry or progress to Higher Education.

In phases 1 and 2, you will be trained in the use of technology to create and record music, alongside developing essential skills as a DJ/live performer. Throughout the course there will be extensive opportunities to perform or showcase your productions, beginning with intimate gigs on campus and ultimately leading in phase 3 to your own club nights in the local area and beyond.

This two year programme develops your skills in Acting, Dance and Musical Theatre and is designed to equip you with the skills needed to succeed in the Performing Arts Industry.

In phase 1 you will study different acting, dance and singing styles and learn about the business and historical context of the performing arts, developing your vocal and physical skills and your industry knowledge. In phase 2 you will perform in-house the work you have rehearsed and in phase 3 you will perform rehearsed work for a public audience here and at other venues in the South West. You will need to successfully audition to continue into the 2nd year of this company.

COMPANY 3 ACTING u

This company operates as part of the Higher Education programme (at Degree level) and is taught over two years in partnership with Plymouth University.

Achievement is rewarded by a Foundation Degree in Actor Training for Theatre and Media Performance.

Highly practical with a strong academic element, this company offers actor training to those who want to undertake skills development at levels 4 and 5 in both live and recorded media. In phases 1 and 2 this includes film, television and voice over work. You are eligible to join the actors’ union Equity through this company. In phase 3 you will perform rehearsed work for a public audience here and at other venues in the South West.

TRAVEL & TOURISM LEVEL 2 FIRST DIPLOMA u

This study programme will provide you with the required skills to gain employment in the world of travel. You will complete work experience and take part in residential visits in the UK and abroad. You will use cabin crew training facilities with real aircraft seats and equipment.

Successful interview, plus: - 4 GCSEs at minimum grade D including English and maths or equivalent - or a Foundation Certificate (Level 1) - Mature students will be assessed on relevant experience, motivation and a reasonable standard of attainment in written English.

Successful interview, plus: - 5 GCSEs at minimum grade C including English Language and maths or equivalent - or Level 2 Diploma in Travel & Tourism with Merit - Mature students will be assessed on relevant experience, motivation and a reasonable standard of attainment in written English.

03 Pop along to one of our Open Events in October, November, February or June to speak to current students and staff and see where you could be studying.

Apply online – once you have decided on the study programme, you can apply online, either at home or come into college if you need help or support.

You’ll be offered an interview within 4 weeks of applying.

If you’re offered a place on the study programme, work hard, have fun, get your grades, have an epic summer and before long you’ll be enrolling with us, online (from the comfort of your home if you wish), ready to start in September.

STUDY PROGRAMME INFORMATION Fees

Rehabilitation of offenders

• If you are aged 16–18 as of 31 August on the year of enrolment no study programme fee.

To help us look after students and assess risks, you will be asked to declare any unspent criminal convictions when you apply for a study programme at Weymouth College. We are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment for all.

• If you are over 19 as of 31 August and enrolling on a full time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in] most cases.
