Weyburn’s Heritage Village Days set for this weekend

There will be a lot offered during Heritage Village Days taking place Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8.

Take a trip back into the early 20th century in one of the pioneer homes on display in Weyburn’s Heritage Village or enjoy some live entertainment under a tent on the grounds. The buildings and homes in the village will be open, with guides at many of the buildings as families and visitors come to explore.

Most of the homes will have memorabilia and antiques on display, many of them from the families who donated the homes that housed area pioneer families in the Weyburn and surrounding area.

The village will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, with the opening ceremonies at 11:30 a.m., and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

There is no admission to enter, with donations to be accepted at the gate. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Heritage Village.

Volunteers are still needed to help put the event on, including for the front gate, barbecue, bake sale or house-sitting.

In addition to the live entertainment, there will be a barbecue concession with hot dogs and hamburgers, a bake sale, raffle, silent auction and demonstrations ranging from blacksmithing, ropemaking to making butter

and homemade ice cream, along with bread-making in the outdoor oven, and a perennial favourite, rides on the fire truck.

Entertainment will be held throughout the weekend. There are also accompanying tours available at the Soo Line Museum during Heritage Village Days.

Crocus 80 Theatre Youth Plays The Crocus 80 Youth Theatre will take to the stage at the Tommy Douglas Centre with two short plays on Friday, August 7 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, August 8 at 1 p.m.

“We have had 40 youth in the program working on stage and backstage,” said Brittany Nightingale, representative of Crocus 80 Theatre. She is faciliating the youth theatre program along with Jessica Hunter.

“The students are having the opportunity to learn different angles of the theatre and how important everyone is to make a production happen.”

There will be two seperate groups in each of the short plays that were locally written, with the play titles ‘Deadline for Time’ and ‘Tooth Fairy Trial’.

“The youth have so much fun engaging and learning through fun theatre based activities,” added Nightingale.

“Our favourite part of producing the plays have been watching the students grow individually and as a group.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, with ages 18 and under free, and will be available at the Tommy Douglas Centre door before each show.

Southeast U15 AAA Twins win silver at provincials SaskToday The Southeast U15 AAA Twins came within a win of capturing the provincial championship, held July 31 to August 2 held in Saskatoon.

The Twins, who were seeded eighth, opened the tournament with two straight victories. They defeated the Sask Five Giants 7-6 on July 31 and the Saskatoon Brewers 8-5 on August 1. They closed out the round robin with a 198 loss to the Yorkton Cardinals, but their 2-1 record punched their ticket for the

playoffs.

The southeast entry won 14-8 over the White Butte Broncos in the semifinal on August 2, but then they lost 12-2 to the Saskatoon Astros in the provincial final, leaving the Twins with a silver medal.

“The Southeast Twins fell short in the 15U AAA Tier 1 provincial championship game, but what this team accomplished over the past few weeks is something they’ll remember long after the final score is forgotten,” stated a post on the team’s Facebook page.

At one point in the season, making Tier 1 Provincials seemed out of reach, the post said. The Twins needed to win their final four games to clinch the eighth and final spot.

“These players believed. The coaches believed. The families believed,” the post said.

“They knew what this team was capable of. They knew they could hit. They knew they could pitch.

Most importantly, they believed in one another.”

Five Giants in the first game of provincials and finished first in their pool in the round robin. They again answered the challenge against White Butte in the semifinal.

“Strong pitching. Clutch defensive plays. Timely hitting. Another complete team effort. Another victory,” the post said.

While the championship game didn’t end the way they had hoped, it doesn’t take away from what the team accomplished, the post said.

“This group proved that rankings don’t determine heart. Seeds don’t determine character. Belief, perseverance and playing for one another can take you farther than anyone expects.”

Meanwhile, the Estevan U13 AAA Brewers went 1-3 at provincials. Their lone victory was in the third game, an 11-8 win over the Saskatoon Dust Devils on August 1.

Estevan fell 14-8 to the Swift Current 57s and 2613 to the Saskatoon Sturgeon on July 31, and 20-12 to the Saskatoon Cannons on August 1.

Summer travel brings renewed focus on road safety

Andrea Moss, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter As Saskatchewan highways fill with vacationers, campers and commercial traffic, recent fatal and serious crashes across the province are serving as a reminder that summer driving conditions require as much caution as winter roads.

While dry pavement and longer daylight hours may give motorists a greater sense of confidence, several Saskatchewan drivers say the biggest danger may be other people behind the wheel.

Recent fatal collisions reported across Saskatchewan have renewed conversations about road safety during the province’s busiest travel season. In recent days alone,

RCMP have responded to multiple fatal crashes on provincial highways, including collisions near Lumsden, Piapot and Duck Lake.

According to SGI, 108 people were killed in traffic collisions in Saskatchewan in 2024, up from 92 fatalities in 2023.

“I trust my driving skills, but I don’t necessarily trust everybody else’s driving skills,” said Alexa Burym, who said recent collisions reported in the province have not changed her travel plans but have made her more defensive while driving.

“I feel like I spend a lot more time paying attention to what other people on the road are doing now.”

road trips, often sharing highways with recreational vehicles, trailers, agricultural equipment and increased tourist traffic.

Savannah KomaikePetkau recently returned from a trip to southern Alberta, where she travelled through narrow, winding roads near Elkwater while hauling a trailer.

“Be conscious of everyone else around you because everyone else might not be as safe as you are,” she said.

Although she did not witness any crashes on her journey, she said there were several close calls involving drivers cutting others off and commercial vehicles failing to slow down.

“Especially when you’re hauling a trailer,”

she said.

Komaike-Petkau believes many drivers become less cautious once winter conditions disappear.

“People drive faster,” she said. Rain and reduced visibility can still create hazardous conditions during the summer months, she added.

To reduce risk, Petkau said her family often plans routes that keep them on divided highways rather than smaller secondary roads whenever possible.

For John Alcorn, who recently completed a road trip to British Columbia, one of the biggest frustrations is inconsistent driving behaviour on Saskatchewan highways.

“You get people with the passing lanes, they’ll

go 90, you’ll hit the passing lane, everyone speeds up to 110,” he said. “Nobody makes any progress.”

Alcorn said summer traffic creates a mix of slower-moving campers and RVs alongside drivers operating high-performance vehicles at higher speeds.

“You do get people, they bring out their Ferraris, their Corvettes, their BMWs, they go a lot faster,” he said. “You’ve got guys hauling campers, slowing things down.”

The combination can create impatience and risky passing manoeuvres, particularly on undivided highways.

Alcorn, who frequently travels rural Saskatchewan roads for work, said motorists also need to pay

attention at grid-road intersections and highway access points.

“We have so many grid roads, unmarked intersections,” he said. “You have yield signs coming onto highways that people don’t always yield at.”

With thousands of Saskatchewan residents expected to spend time on the road throughout the summer, drivers are being reminded that good weather does not eliminate the risks associated with highway travel.

Komakie-Petkau said the key to staying safe is remembering that not every driver approaches the road the same way.

“Be conscious of everyone else around you because everyone else might not be as safe as you are.”

Opinion: Ottawa’s industrial policy comes at the Prairies’ expense Submitted by Marco Navarro-Genie Who pays when Ottawa protects one industry at the expense of another?

The answer arrived on Canada Day, hidden in a product most Canadians could not name. China imposed a preliminary 73.5 per cent anti-dumping duty on Canadian pea starch, effective July 1. Processors produce pea starch when they fractionate yellow peas into protein, starch and fibre, turning a Prairie crop into higher-value ingredients. Pea starch sounds obscure. The politics behind it are not.

Why pea starch? Start in the autumn of 2024. Ottawa slapped a 100 per cent surtax on Chinese electric vehicles, then a 25 per cent surtax on Chinese steel and aluminum, to shelter Canadian auto and metal jobs clustered along the OntarioQuebec industrial corridor.

At the centre of that policy sits an electric-vehicle supply chain stretching from Windsor and St. Thomas, Ontario, to Bécancour, Quebec. The Parliamentary Budget Officer estimated federal and provincial support for thirteen announced EV supply-chain projects across Canada at up to $52.5 billion.

Beijing did not retaliate against Ontario and Quebec. It retaliated against Saskatchewan. Within days of Ottawa’s announcement, China opened an anti-dumping case against Canadian canola. By 2025, it had hit canola oil, meal

and seed, along with peas, pork and seafood. Most of the agricultural products came disproportionately from the Prairies. The seafood duties struck coastal producers as well. China presents the pea starch measure as a trade remedy. In the context of the continuing tariff dispute, Prairie processors can be forgiven for seeing something more familiar: another invoice from a trade war Ottawa began to protect Central Canadian industry.

Campaigning in April 2025, Mark Carney called China “the biggest threat from a geopolitical sense.”

Nine months later, as prime minister, he stood in Beijing, announced a new strategic partnership, and told reporters, “We take the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.” He called the partnership one that “sets us up well for the new world order.”

The deal was plain.

Canada would admit up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles a year at a 6.1 per cent tariff. In return, Ottawa expected China to ease its canola duties.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, watching the deal reopen his market to Chinese cars, was incensed for his auto workers, and his grievance ran across the country for days. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe welcomed relief for his farmers. Western canola was the collateral when the wall went up and the hostage Ottawa had to ransom

Ontario and Quebec are unused to paying for the nation’s trade wars.

The Prairies had swallowed a year of retaliation and raised nothing like the same alarm. The OntarioQuebec bill became a national event. The Western one arrives every season.

Now weigh what Ottawa’s industrial policy protected. Electric vehicle sales fell through 2025.

Carney first suspended the 2026 sales requirement and later announced the repeal of the federal Electric Vehicle Availability Standard. Quebec’s flagship Northvolt plant collapsed before it opened, costing the province a $270-million writeoff. The Windsor cell plant did open, though only after Stellantis, the carmaker that founded it, sold out to its Korean partner. The strategy remained expensive even as its promise faded. The Prairies pay a live duty to shelter that strategy.

The issue is larger than electric vehicles. It is about who benefits from Ottawa’s industrial policy and who pays for it. Any national industrial policy that concentrates its benefits in one region while exposing another to retaliation will breed the same politics. The West grows the exports.

Ontario and Quebec keep the factories. Ottawa writes the tariff. Beijing sends the bill to the address with the least say in the decision.

That returns us to the arithmetic. A region can absorb one bad tariff. A region can absorb a poor bargain struck in its name. What it cannot do is out-vote the arrangement that produces both, when the seats that decide trade policy sit where the factories sit and the votes that might change it sit where the farms sit.

The math held before pea starch. It holds after.

We have arrived at Golden, which is a famous mountain hub of around 4000 people.

In 1882 when A.B. Rogers set out to find a path through the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains.

He set up a base camp where Golden is today called McMillan’s camp.

By 1884 a nearby lumber camp called itself Silver City but most of the people wanted a different name so there was Kicking Horse Flats. That changed to Golden City, and over time the name ‘City’ was dropped which left it just as Golden. The name stuck.

Golden is right in the middle and surrounded by six national parks, Banff, Glacier, Jasper, Kootenay, Mount Revelstoke and Yoho. The town is built on the shores of where the Kicking Horse River meets the Columbia River.

With all of these national parks at the backdoor of this community, it is not hard to imagine the vast tourist opportunities that are in the vicinity with ski resorts being the most plentiful.

about Golden is that not only is it a major centre for outdoor activities but it also home to one of the top five paragliding launches in Canada.

If you are going out for a hike, the one thing that you must watch for is the presence of many animals in the area. Around the community of Golden you can find Grizzly Bear, Black Bear along with wolves and many species of deer and sheep. Golden is also home to more than 200 species of birds including eagles.

Golden is mostly a winter activity community with lots of skiing and winter sports. Some of the most notable people that came from Golden are hockey players and Olympic skiers.

There have been many comparisons between Golden and Banff, with Golden being a working community and not a tourist destination.

Nice place to visit and another destination to return in the future.

Golden relies on forestry and transportation including the railway for the economic well-being of the community. But the number one industry is tourism as this community services over one million tourists annually, creating thousands of local jobs.

It’s hard to imagine that the population is still only around 4,000 people.

Much of the town’s history circles around the Canadian Pacific Railroad, which still maintains a major repair shop in Golden. With the community being in the middle of all the parks, Golden is a major transportation hub along the Trans-Canada.

One of the fun things to do in Golden is to cross the Golden Skybridge which is one of Canada’s highest suspension bridges that crosses a deep river canyon. Also, the Kicking Horse bridge is the longest free-standing timber pedestrian bridge in Canada. If you are into white water rafting the Kicking Horse River provides some of the best rafting.

Saskatchewan healthcare workers issue urgent warning ahead of strike

Denis Conroy SaskToday.ca After more than three years without a new collective agreement, thousands of Saskatchewan health care workers said patience is running out as growing staffing shortages, rising living costs and mounting workplace pressures push them toward a provincewide strike vote this September.

For nearly every Saskatchewan resident, health care is something they depend on during life’s most critical moments. But the frontline workers who keep that system running say the pressures behind the scenes have reached a point where the status quo can no longer continue.

CUPE Local 5430, Saskatchewan’s largest health care union representing more than 14,000 frontline workers, has announced it will hold a strike vote in September after what it describes as years of stalled bargaining, falling wages and worsening staffing shortages. Members work in hospitals, long-term care homes, laboratories, community health centres and medical facilities across the province.

Union leaders stress that the decision is not about walking away from patients.

They say it is about fighting for a health care system capable of attracting and keeping the skilled professionals Saskatchewan families depend on every day.

“Our members don’t want conflict,” said CUPE 5430 President Bashir Jalloh. “They want a health care system that attracts and keeps skilled professionals so Saskatchewan families can count on timely, quality care when they need it most.”

For Jalloh, the upcom-

ing strike vote is the result of years of frustration rather than a sudden turning point.

“We have been bargaining our collective agreement since 2023,” he said. “We have done multiple rounds of bargaining with the employers’ bargaining agent, SAHO, and what we have come to realize is that they are doing everything to slow our process and frustrate us so we can take all the concessions.”

Despite those frustrations, he said health care workers have continued reporting for every shift because they understand what is at stake.

“We know that we are essential workers in this province,” Jalloh said. “We know the implications if we don’t do the job that we do.”

At the same time, he said the pressures on workers continue to mount.

“Our members have been going through a costof-living crisis. The work environment is not good.

People continue to work short every day.”

According to the union, Saskatchewan’s health care workforce has now gone more than four years without a wage increase while employees continue working under an expired collective agreement dating back to 2023.

CUPE argues that wages have fallen well behind neighbouring provinces, making Saskatchewan increasingly difficult to recruit into and even harder to remain in.

“The government itself, in the past, used the Western Canada average to pay health care workers,” Jalloh explained. “But if you look at our wages right now, they are way below the Western Canada average.”

He believes the conse-

quences are visible throughout the health care system.

“People are finishing school with significant student loan debt,” he said.

“They come here, use Saskatchewan as a stepping stone to get experience, and then they leave.”

The union says those departures create vacancies that ripple throughout hospitals and care facilities.

“When health care workers leave because they cannot afford to stay, everyone feels the impact,” Jalloh said. “Patients wait longer for care. Families experience delays. Remaining staff become exhausted.

This isn’t just a workers’ issue. It’s a public issue.”

The shortages, he said, have dramatically changed daily working conditions.

“This is summer vacation. People have been denied summer vacation.

People who have worked 20 or 30 years have been denied vacations,” he said.

“People are on constant callback. You finish work, you go home, then they’re calling you back to work.”

Others are required to stay beyond the end of scheduled shifts because there is simply nobody available to replace them.

“There is no work-life balance,” Jalloh said. “The only way we’re going to address that is if we pay health care workers fair wages so they can stay in Saskatchewan.”

The union also points to recruitment as a growing financial issue.

Rather than increasing wages for permanent employees, Jalloh argues the province is increasingly relying on expensive contract workers.

“Their approach is actually costing taxpayers more money,” he said.

He cited examples of

diagnostic imaging professionals earning roughly $8,000 to $9,000 per month as permanent employees while contract workers performing similar work can cost between $18,000 and $21,000 monthly.

“If you pay people who live and work here fair wages, they stay in Saskatchewan,” he said. “They spend that money in Saskatchewan. They raise their families here.”

The union believes improving wages would strengthen both recruitment and retention while ultimately reducing long-term staffing costs.

CUPE 5430 has also raised concerns about proposals involving the movement of employees between facilities and continues to oppose further privatization of health care services, arguing stable public staffing remains essential to long-term patient care.

Throughout nego-

tiations, Jalloh insists the union has continued bringing forward solutions rather than simply identifying problems.

“We have provided solutions to the employer,” he said. “We have provided short-, medium- and longterm solutions to recruitment and retention.”

He says meaningful consultation with frontline workers is essential if Saskatchewan hopes to solve its staffing crisis.

“If we want to be successful about health care, we need to sit down, have dialogue, know what the issues are, and then we can have sustainable health care.”

Despite announcing a strike vote, Jalloh repeatedly emphasized that job action remains something health care workers hope to avoid.

“This is not a decision that we take lightly,” he said. “We have been extremely patient at the bargaining table.”

He said workers continue showing up every day because they care deeply about the people they serve.

“Our members show up every day because they care deeply about the people of Saskatchewan,” Jalloh said.

“They stay late. They pick up extra shifts. They do everything they can to ensure patients receive the care they deserve. But dedication alone cannot keep a health care system running.”

If bargaining does not produce a breakthrough, CUPE 5430 members will hold a democratic strike vote in September. Any future job action would still require Saskatchewan’s legislated essential services process before it could proceed.

Until then, Jalloh says the union remains committed to negotiations, but believes the province must begin listening to the workers keeping Saskatchewan’s health care system operating every day.

Beavers end regular season, hope to qualify for final playoff spot

The Weyburn Beavers competed for the fourth and final playoff spot, with the last two games of the regular season held in Regina on August 5.

Moose Jaw 22 Weyburn 11 August 2 The Express held a 13-10 lead after only four innings before things settled down a bit, but Moose Jaw would add six runs in the eighth to invoke the mercy rule Soto finished 5-for6 with a home run, three runs and six RBIs to lead the Express, Jimmy Kurtz was 6-for-6 with five runs and two RBI. Garryn Plummer was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI, Eduardo Saenz and Chris Franks each had three RBI, Brayden Bunnell scored three runs.

As the score would indicate, neither pitching staff had much success early, with Walls going 2 ⅔ and giving up six runs on eight hits but getting the eight strikeouts he needed for the record.

Antonio Sansone picked up the win after giving up only two hits in two innings of relief.

Ryan Dauphinee went 3-for-5 and finished a triple away from the cycle with two runs and three RBI for Weyburn.

Weyburn 11, Regina 9 July 31 A six-run third inning staked the Beavers to a 9-6 lead, but Regina would rally with three runs in

the sixth to tie things up.

Weyburn saw to it there would be no extra innings, though, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Ryan Dauphinee led the Beavers with a 2-for4 outing that included a home run, double, two runs and four runs batted in. Robert Gurney went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, while Will Sevier was 3-for-5 with a run and crucial seventhinning RBI. Noah Brooks had three hits and scored two runs, Trevor Dale knocked in a pair.

Josh Pritchard got the start for Weyburn and allowed nine runs on 11 hits over six innings, Trey Watson tossed a scoreless seventh for the save.

Fowler hit a triple for the lone extra base hit for Regina in the nightcap, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of runs. Castellanos went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, Ty Martinez knocked in a pair of runs.

Sam Jackson had a solid outing for Regina on the mound, giving up three runs on eight hits over five

innings and striking out seven to earn the win.

Colt Uphold hit a pair of doubles and had an RBI for Weyburn, who had eight of their nine starters get at least one hit in the game. Hugh Montgomery was 2-for-3 and scored a run, Robert Gurney hit a double for his lone hit and had an RBI. Maddock Day got the start for Weyburn and was the losing pitcher after giving up six runs on nine hits over 4 ⅓ innings.

Swift Current 14, Weyburn 9 July 30 The 57’s scored six runs in the third inning and took a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth when the Beavers rallied with five runs to get back into things. Swift Current kept adding offence, though, and Weyburn was unable to respond.

The teams combined for 12 extra base hits in the game, with each hitting

five doubles.

Hudson Unger finished a home run away from hitting for the cycle with a 3-for-5 effort that included a double, triple and two runs scored. Mace Wheeler was 3-for-6 with three RBI, Jake Hiromoto finished 2-for-5 with three runs.

Keagan Knowler got the start for the 57’s and allowed six runs on six hits over three innings, Mason Fauser took over in the fourth and pitched into the ninth, allowing a single run on four hits to earn the win.

Joe Madill also just missed hitting for the cycle for Weyburn, going 3-for-5 with a home run, double, two runs and two RBI. New district governor for Lions proud of organization’s service

David Willberg SaskToday.ca The new district governor for Lions Clubs International’s south Saskatchewan district has been sworn into the role and is looking forward to the upcoming year.

Shelley Carroll of Bienfait travelled to the international convention in Hong Kong with her husband Paul in July. She noted nearly 17,000 Lions gathered to celebrate the service group. More than 140 countries and territories were represented.

“Every day was filled with information and opportunities to learn more about Lions as well as meet with Lions members from all over,” she said.

Lions International currently has 1.4 million members and has an objective of 1.5 million, she said. Recruiting is important, but retention is just as critical, as clubs want to ensure members are happy

and engaged.

On the final day, she said incoming international president Mark Lyon was sworn in. His first order of business was announcing that all of the district governor-elects, including Carroll, were officially district governors.

“The room was electric as everyone was shaking hands and hugging one another,” she said.

In addition to forums and experience-sharing sessions, community service activities were organized, she said, including visits to elderly people, community outreach initiatives, and the promotion of foot care and health awareness.

They also set a new record by having more than 10,000 people from six continents join together for tai chi.

She said she heard a lot of things from the convention that she will take back to the district, which is

known as 5SKS. Carroll has been a member of the Bienfait Lions Club for 23 years. Her husband was already a member when a long-time Bienfait Lions Club member, Ted Fai, asked her to join. By that point, her kids were older so she had more free time.

“I knew that Lions did great things around Bienfait. I wasn’t 100 per cent sure what we did internationally, but I liked what we did around town,” she said.

Carroll said she likes meeting and helping people. The club has hosted a community dinner theatre for many years and it has a Bingo once a month that people enjoy. The Lions were also “instrumental” in the opening of the town’s current swimming pool, she said, and in making the previous pool happen.

As district governor, she will travel throughout southern Saskatchewan

and hear success stories from the different clubs.

“I am basically the link between the international president and all of the clubs in my district, to let them know what is going on, what our beliefs are,” said Carroll.

She hopes to visit most of the clubs over the next year, but due to the size of the district and the number of organizations, she said it’s not possible. The district’s first vice-governor, who is on the west side of the 5SKS, will help Carroll with those clubs, and the district also has a second vice-governor.

If awards are to be handed out, Carroll will assist with those, and a couple of clubs have special anniversaries this year she will attend.

“It’s like celebrating a wedding anniversary. It is a great milestone to have a club anniversary,” she said.

Carroll noted 5SKS has 71 clubs and more than

1,300 members. Communities as small as Alida and Ceylon have clubs.

“It doesn’t matter how big your community is, it’s people in the community that want to help you out,” said Carroll.

The district is named 5SKS because District 5 includes all of Saskatchewan and the Dakotas, while SKS reflects southern Saskatchewan. 5SKS includes communities as far north as Maryfield and Moosomin in the east, and Kindersley, which is a new club in the west.

She was also tasked with selecting the site for the district convention, which will be at the Kenosee Inns and Cabins in Kenosee Lake on October 23 and 24. Carroll said the gathering has been trimmed to a day and a half to make it more affordable for members, and to allow Lions to spend time with their families. Meetings, inductions into the Lions

Hall of Fame and other activities will happen.

Carroll is looking forward to the upcoming year.

She knows she is going to be busy, and she is looking forward to helping as many people as possible.

“I have a great team behind me that can help me out in any way,” she said.

First-ever Sask. Artificial Intelligence Expo exceeded expectations

Jon Perez SaskToday.ca The first-ever Saskatchewan Artificial Intelligence Expo exceeded organizers’ expectations, drawing 127 attendees from across Saskatchewan, other parts of Canada and even the United States.

The event was organized by Artificial Intelligence Saskatchewan, a non-profit organization founded two years ago that has grown to 165 members, including students, individuals and corporate partners.

AiSask founder Alex Fallon said they are already planning a significantly larger expo next year, with

ambitions to attract nearly 1,000 participants, as the strong response of the inaugural event demonstrated that interest in AI is expanding rapidly throughout the province as more people seek to understand how the technology will affect their industries and careers.

“We’ve been around for about two years, with 165 members from individuals, students and corporate members. Being the first-year event, we weren’t sure how much interest there would be; we were pleased to have 127 attendees,” said Fallon, who added that the event attracted a broad audience rather than technology

professionals only.

Students, business owners and members of the public attended sessions covering artificial intelligence, data centres, AI privacy and data protection, and technology companies showcasing their innovations attended the expo. Breakout sessions focused on data centres, AI privacy, data protection and presentations from some of the local Saskatchewan tech companies.

How different it is today compared to fifty years ago, and I got to wondering how do children look at school today. I than came across a poetic prayer written by a 15-yearold Winnipeg, Manitoba teenager. I thought it was really good so I would like to share it with you.

Now I sit me down in school, where praying is against the rule, for this great nation under God, finds mention of him very odd, if scripture now the class recites, it violates the bill of rights, and any time my head I bow, it now becomes a federal matter.

Our hair can be purple, orange or green, that’s no offence; it’s a freedom scene, the laws specific, the laws precise.

Prayers spoken aloud

are a serious vice, for praying in a public hall might offend someone with no faith at all.

In silence alone we must meditate, Gods name is prohibited by the providence. We’re allowed to cuss and dress like freaks, and pierce our noses tongues and cheeks.

They have outlawed guns, but first the bible, to quote the good book makes me liable. We can elect a pregnant senior queen, and the “unwed daddy”, our senior king. It’s inappropriate to teach right from wrong, we’re taught that such judgements do not belong.

We can get our condoms and birth control, study witch craft, vampires and totem poles. but the Ten Commandments are not allowed, no word of God must reach this crowd. its scary here I must confess, when chaos reigns the schools a mess.

So, Lord, this silent plea I make; should I be shot; my soul please take to heaven.

Amen.

If this is truly how teens feel what can we as parents do to help our children face the reality of our schools today? First of all, we need to pray for them every day, pray for there teachers and school staff, along with the board of education.

Keep the lines of communication open with your children as best as you can, also their teachers. Be involved in their school activities and after school activities if you can, get involved with the parents’ advisory board.

Love them despite how they look or dress, and show them and teach them by your own actions and words what is appropriate and what is not. The old saying “It takes a community to raise a child” is more relevant today than it was fifty years ago. So, I will be praying for our children and school system and be involved as much as I can, may God give us wisdom to do things HIS way.

St. Joseph’s Hospital celebrates opening of new MRI unit

SaskToday St. Joseph’s Hospital in Estevan is officially celebrating the opening of its new MRI unit.

A grand opening July 30 celebrated the successful completion of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation’s MRI for Estevan campaign, a communityled fundraising effort that raised more than $6.5 million in less than 20 months through the generosity of individuals, families, businesses, urban and rural municipalities, service clubs, foundations and organizations across southeast Saskatchewan.

The official ceremony featured a ribbon cutting with campaign lead donor Elaine Walkom, whose $2 million gift in memory of her late husband Grant launched the campaign, which started in March 2024 and reached its goal in November 2025.

“This MRI is much more than a piece of medical equipment,” said St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation director Lori Gervais.

“It represents what is possible when an entire region

comes together around a common goal. Every donation, large and small, helped bring this project to life. Today belongs to every person who believed this community deserved access to world-class health care close to home.”

A press release from the foundation said the MRI will significantly improve patient care by providing local access to advanced medical imaging that previously required many residents to travel to Regina or other centres. Patients requiring MRI scans will now receive care closer to home, reducing travel, wait times, stress on families and time away from work while supporting faster diagnoses and improved treatment planning.

The project is expected to benefit not only residents of Estevan but patients throughout southeast Saskatchewan, strengthening health-care capacity across the region while helping recruit and retain physicians and specialists.

A press release noted

the campaign united more than 1,200 donors from communities across the southeast, demonstrating an “extraordinary” commitment to improving health care for future generations. In addition to donations, the press release states supporters gave countless hours through their time, resources and passion to make the project possible.

“This achievement demonstrates what can happen when communities work together,” said hospital executive director Candace Kopec. “The MRI will change healthcare delivery in southeast Saskatchewan by allowing patients to receive advanced diagnostic care closer to home. It is an investment that will improve lives every single day.”

David Willberg SaskToday.ca For the second straight year, a playoff was needed to decide the winner of the Dave Price Memorial Horse Race at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course, although the playoff didn’t last as long as in 2025.

Dallas Lequyer defeated Mark Spencer on the first playoff hole to win the annual showdown involving the golfers from the championship flight of the Amanda Minchin Classic,

sponsored by FrameTech.

Hundreds of spectators turned out to watch the event, held Aug. 2 on the course’s front nine.

Mitchell Matichuk, Daryl Donovan, Scott Mackay, Tyler Mryglod, Nolan Rohatyn, Isaac Shanks, Sheldon Stepp, Cody Balon, Reegan Robinson and Payden Benning were the other contestants in the horse race.

The two golfers with the highest score on each of the first two holes were

eliminated, leaving eight golfers entered. From there, the golfer with the highest score on each hole was knocked out. Spencer and Lequyer were the last two golfers remaining.

They tied on the ninth hole, forcing the playoff.

The horse race is held in memory of Dave Price, who was an avid golfer and a big fan of the horse race.

The 2025 edition of the horse race needed six playoff holes to decide a winner.

Paige Wheeler rallies to win 5th straight Woodlawn women’s title

David Willberg SaskToday.ca Paige Wheeler remains the golfer to beat in the women’s division of the Amanda Minchin Classic, sponsored by FrameTech, at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course.

Wheeler captured the women’s division for the fifth straight year. She shot an 88 in the opening round August 1 and then an 87 the following day to finish with a two-round total of 175, six strokes better than Jessica Brown and Roxanne Willerth, who each had a 181. Taylor Gallais was fourth at 183.

Wheeler said she played with a great group of women, which helped her play better.

“They are great people.

I loved playing golf with them,” said Wheeler.

Wheeler believes she should have made more putts during the weekend, and these weren’t her best rounds. She thought she chipped the ball well. The course is in good condition and Wheeler was happy with the pin placements for the tournament.

ey helped Wheeler handle pressure, and she wasn’t nervous entering play in the final round despite trailing by five strokes.

“I actually like the chase. It actually pumps up my adrenaline. I like knowing that I have to play better and smarten up,” said Wheeler.

Susan Colbow won the women’s first flight with a 201 total over two rounds.

Fourteen women entered the classic this year, and Wheeler hopes more will enter the tournament in the future.

“There’s a lot of good golfers and it’s not as scary as you think. It’s good energy. Everyone’s accepting and we just want the best for everyone,” said Wheeler.

The men’s and the senior men’s divisions had their second rounds as well on August 2.

Mitchell Matichuk shot a 4-under-par 68 on August 2 and now holds the lead at 6-under 138 for the tournament. He has a two-stroke lead on Darryl Donovan and Scott Mackay, who sit tied for second at 4-under 140. Tyler Mryglod is fourth at 2-under 142.

Rick Hallberg, who has won the senior men’s division each of the past five years, has a nine-shot lead in that event. He shot a 1-under-par 71 in the second round, and is at 6-under-par 138 for the weekend. Ron Swan is second at 3-over-par 147 and Bryan Dew is third at 4-over-par 148.

The men and the senior men play three rounds.

Their competitions were slated to wrap up August 3.

The annual Dave Price Memorial Horse Race is happening in the afternoon and evening of August 2 as well. The 12 golfers in the championship flight are playing in an elimination event on the course’s front nine, with hundreds of spectators in attendance.

The classic is named after Minchin, a decorated Estevan golfer and the long-time head pro and general manager at Woodlawn. She died earlier this year after battling cancer.

Wheeler noted how much everyone misses Minchin.

“Amanda was a good friend and a good role model for all of the women out there,” said Wheeler.

Midale showed its history on the Saskatchewan Day long weekend

Josie Hlohovsky SaskToday.ca The Souris Valley Antique Association is hosting its 60th annual Pioneer Echoes weekend in Midale over the Saskatchewan Day long weekend.

Activities included a tractor parade and threshing demonstrations on Aug. 1 and 2. There was also a pancake breakfast both days.

The heritage village was open with a live blacksmith

demonstration, a maintained old school and other attractions. Bouncy castles were provided for kids and a concession.

Midale Rodeo activities have also been happening during the weekend.

Young Stoughton rodeo star wins Midale Bull Bash

Josie Hlohovsky SaskToday.ca The Midale Rodeo Association held its annual Bull Bash and Cabaret on July 31.

Kaden Piper was crowned as champion that evening. With a combined score of 166.5 points, the Stoughton bull rider was ahead of the runner up, Lucas Ozirney, by five and a half points. Ozimey

ended the day with 161 points.

Piper won a total of $2,110, and Ozirney won $1,500. Third place with 85 points was Chase Skene from Prince Albert, who took home $640.

Jaden Ozirney placed fourth and won $480 and Jett Lockie from Wasada, Man. finished with 83 points for fifth place.

Following the rodeo

was a cabaret with Justin LaBrash and True North performing.

Massive crowds turned out for the bull riding event, as well as for other rodeo competitions that happened in the town during the weekend.

Estevan Salvation Army food bank nearly full despite growing demand

David Willberg SaskToday.ca While the shelves are well-stocked at the Estevan Salvation Army’s food bank, the ministry could still use some items as it continued to see an increase a growing demand.

Director of ministry Ronza Reynard said the shelves are, on average, about 75 per cent full, even though the Salvation Army saw an 18 per cent increase in clients in June with 340, compared with the 280 for the same month in 2025.

She added the monthly increase has ranged from 1022 per cent in 2026.

Some of the people might be a one-time-only

proposition, she said, while others might become regular visitors.

“We do get some people that come once a year or they come when they first get to town, and then we don’t see them much more after that,” said Reynard.

“It’s just nice to know that we are a resource in the community that people can access.”

Reynard believes a number of factors contribute to the increase, including the rising cost of fuel and groceries.

“Everything is just costing more, and it’s hard to stretch that dollar. For most of us, that paycheque is the same week to week,

but if everything else is going up [it’s tough]. We get people that will have one or two jobs and try to make ends meet, or people trying to find jobs, or people just in situations and at this point can’t work, so at this point they just need that extra little bit of help,” said Reynard.

If people receive assistance from the food bank, then they might be able to pay the power bill or fill the gas tank, she said.

Clients can come in once a month. Reynnard encouraged people to call before they are out of food and book an appointment, because it might take two or three days for someone

to get in.

The shelves are fuller than they normally would be at this time of year, she said. The Salvation Army used cash donations from the community to purchase a bunch of products that helped replenish the shelves.

“Every week we’re going and buying potatoes, carrots, yogurt, milk and eggs and different fruits and vegetables so we have fresh stuff. We want to make sure that we’re trying to be very balanced,” said Reynard.

When it can offer healthier food items, it’s better for everybody, she said.

Items needed at the food bank include cold cereal, soup, canned vegetables (excluding corn), macaroni and peanut butter. Toilet paper is always a need.

“I know not everybody thinks toilet paper when they think food bank, but it is a necessity for people, and we are running low on that,” she said.

If people have a garden and they have extra fruits and vegetables, the Salvation Army would accept them.

“We always say don’t do anything with it. Just pull it out of the ground and box it up and bring it into us, and we’ll do all the

process of cleaning it up and bagging it up ... and getting that out for some of our clients,” she said.

Reynard noted 1,245 people accessed the free bread table at the thrift store in June, and more than 300 people came in and drank coffee and over 400 enjoyed a snack during that month. She noted some of the bread table users do so repeatedly each week.

“You do see that people are relying on that,” said Reynard. I think it’s wonderful that we’re able to offer that, and we thank our partners who help us do that, so it’s a busy summer.”

Impaired operation laws apply to boats

Submitted Over 100 containers of alcohol were dumped, and seven tickets were issued

by Saskatchewan RCMP during boat patrols on Last Mountain Lake.

On July 25, 2026, Lumsden RCMP and Saskatchewan RCMP’s Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan conducted proactive boat patrols on Last Mountain Lake.

During the six hours officers spent patrolling the water, police: • dumped over 100 containers of alcohol; • issued four tickets for open alcohol on a boat; • issued one ticket for operating a boat without a license; • issued two tickets for open alcohol on shore; and • issued several warnings for lack of life jacket use.

Officers also conducted 20 Mandatory Alcohol Screenings (MAS), with multiple boaters coming close to the provincial suspension limit. Officers remind watercraft operators that impairment – whether it be from alcohol, cannabis, or other intoxicants – is punishable under the Criminal Code. Furthermore, it is prohibited to have open alcohol on a

watercraft.

“A day on the lake may feel more relaxed than a drive on the road, but your responsibility to be safe – and abide by the law – is the same,” says Supt. Grant St. Germaine, officer in charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. “On any given day, there are families out fishing and kids tubing or wake-surfing on the lake.

These are the people – along with yourself and your loved ones – that you are putting in harm’s way if you ignore the law.”

As people continue to enjoy Saskatchewan’s lakes and waterways this summer, Saskatchewan RCMP encourages everyone to abide by the following safety tips to help have a safe experience: • Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.

• Ensure you do not have open alcohol on board.

• Never operate a watercraft while impaired.

• Follow safe boating guidelines and speed limits.

• Always wear a life jacket and use safety equipment properly. Every watercraft must have at least one life jacket per person on it.

• Ensure your water vessel has operable lights.

These must be used when travelling on the water after sunset.

• Stay off your cell phone – don’t be a distracted driver.

• Be prepared with safety equipment and a first aid kit.

• Have your Pleasure Craft Operators Card with you on the water. This is mandatory for all watercraft operators.

• Know what to do in an emergency.

Saskatchewan RCMP advise that if you see or experience an emergency on the water, call 911 immediately. In a nonemergency, contact your local RCMP by calling 310-RCMP.

Farmland leases for 2027-2031 awarded by Weyburn council SaskToday The City of Weyburn has awarded new fiveyear lease contracts for its municipally-owned agricultural lands, securing a combined annual revenue of $159,885 for the 20272031 crop years.

The tender process closed June 29 and attracted two bids for the 2,080 acres of city-owned farmland located in various areas near Weyburn.
