The supervised visitation program is designed to ensure that every visit is child-focused, respectful and secure, Envision said.

“Custodial caregivers play an important role by ensuring the child arrives on time and prepared, offering emotional support before and after visits, and sharing important information such as medications, allergies and routines with the family access worker,” the press release said.

Visiting parents are encouraged to interact positively with their child through play, conversation, reading and bonding, while following all rules set by the supervisor or court, including maintaining appropriate topics and behaviours.

neutral third party, remaining present throughout each visit to observe interactions, ensure the child’s safety, and document visits through objective, factual reports.

According to Envision, the program offers several important benefits for families: • Safety: A secure environment where children can interact with their non-custodial parent; • Documentation: Professional, objective notes that may support court processes if needed; • Gradual transition: A step toward more flexible arrangements as situations improve; and • Reconnection: A supportive way for parents to re-enter or strengthen their role in a child’s life.

SaskToday The Envision Counselling and Support Centre has announced a new supervised visitation program, created to support families in the community as they navigate separation, divorce and other challenges.

Supervised visitation, also known as supervised access, provides a safe, structured and nurturing environment where children can maintain and build relationships with their noncustodial parent, Envision said in a news release. It is often court mandated and designed to ensure that children remain safe while preserving important family connections.

Envision said it believes every family deserves a safe space to connect and grow, especially during times of change.

“Our team is incredibly excited to offer supervised visitation to families in our community,” said Renee Borhot, Envision family support program supervisor. “This program is about creating a safe and supportive space

Young entrepreneurs offered a boost

SaskToday Applications for the Young Entrepreneur Bursary intake for 2026-27 are now being accepted.

Entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35 who have been in operation for less than 10 years are eligible to apply. Applications for this year’s intake close July 17.

The program, which is entering its second year, supports young Saskatchewan business owners through financial assistance and mentorship opportunities. The Government of Saskatchewan is providing nearly $1 million in funding over three years to the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce to administer the program.

“Saskatchewan is home to extraordinary entrepreneurial talent, in every city, town and rural community across this province,” said Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce CEO Prabha Ramaswamy.

Last year, the intake program received more than 340 applications from young entrepreneurs across 87 Saskatchewan communities.

Entrepreneurship is a key driver in protecting the provincial economy.

With 124 small businesses per 1,000 people, Saskatchewan has the secondhighest per capita rate in the country. For more information on the program or the application process visit: saskchamber.com.

Mobile early learning opportunities are also made available with Johnson noting that in the current school year there have been 118 community visits in 35 different communities that involve everything from car seat clinics to literacy.

A total of 1,542 children were engaged with the mobile program along with 658 adults. Overall the early learning touch point programs begin with such things as Welcome Baby projects for newborns up to the age of six months before advancing to the Tales for Tots that involve children up to the age of two, then pre-school programs under the Impact banner.

This engages youngsters in preparation projects to help them get ready for classrooms and then the Ready for K events for four and five-year-olds to see them graduate into a Kin-

dergarten environment and beyond.

Moving back to the Family Resource Centre, it was recorded that the programming there involved 1,569 children and 1,060 adults for a total attendance of 2,629. It was also reported that in the month of March alone the programs had 3,625 social media followers with over 68,000 social content views.

It’s about access, equity, inclusion and reduced barriers at the Estevan Early Years Family Resource Centre, the presenters said.

Intervention programs were also discussed as were topics such as building relationships among the youngsters and families.

The presentation involved a lot of information and explanations for the board members to ingest, but it was obvious they were engaged since Johnson and Ferguson fielded several questions during and after the formal presentation.

Early Learning programs highlighted for SE Cornerstone board

Submitted by Norm Park, Contracted Reporter for SECPSD A comprehensive, detailed 90-minute engagement with the trustees of the South East Cornerstone Public School Division, was brought forward by Kristy Johnson, co-ordinator of the Early Learning portfolio for the division on May 21, in the division’s conference room.

Holly Ferguson, an early learning and care coach joined Johnson to add details regarding various programs being offered

by South East Cornerstone Public School Division during the board’s afternoon open business session.

An early learning portfolio presentation embraced the first part of the presentation followed by comments regarding twoway communication needs within the early learning processes.

A base team of five early learning and care coaches lead the charge for

Early Childhood Intervention Programs (ECIP) that involve support for children as early as birth to five years.

Johnson noted there are teacher onboarding seminars for educators coming into the school division and instructional coaching supports extending into the classroom setting.

Indigenous education has become an integral part of the early learning program’s reach and a display table containing various items involved in that project was set up in the conference room for the board members to examine.

Johnson noted how land-based learning experiences had become an exciting part of school improvement planning goals. Treaty Catalysts were involved in three PLC’s in the 2025-26 school year.

MathUp collaboration projects also took a leading role with professional development exercises for educators on a schedule

followed by teacher testimonials that were shared to advance the programs to the middle years students.

Early literacy action plans promoted by the Ministry of Education were brought into the SECPSD environment with strategic priorities and action plans established for present and future involvement.

Ferguson spoke about professional development projects and how various elements become “inviting” and encourage solid engagement with the inclusion of motor skill developments.

Johnson spoke of nine programs in seven schools that offered pre-Kindergarten programming that included speech and language advancements.

She also spoke of the Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP) that involved elements for learning plus home visits, referrals and transition supports that could be brought into play when and

if required. A total of 153 youngsters up to the age of five were currently on caseload programs.

The Estevan Early Years Family Resource Centre’s programming that involves contributions from the Education Ministry, was brought to the attention of the board members. The centre features two program designers, executive director, a board of trustees and a planning team. The centre features such things as a Master Minds program for three and four-year-old youngsters and their caregivers.

The essential learning experiences for this age grouping, such as the need to develop self-awareness, motor skills, connections to nature and sensory awareness as well as developing curiosity, observation skills, listening capabilities and conversation skills were outlined by Johnson and Ferguson.

Weyburn resident on latest Dean List at Univ. of Dubuque

SaskToday A Weyburn resident has earned a place on the University of Dubuque (UD) Dean’s List.

Kara Zelyck was recognized on the university’s spring semester Dean’s List.

The school states that students must achieve a term grade point average of 3.5 or higher, complete or be on track to complete at least 12 credits for the term, and have no Incomplete grades to qualify.

Once any Incomplete grades are finalized, the office of academic affairs re-evaluates students for possible Dean’s List consideration for that term. The Dean’s List is awarded for the fall and spring semesters only and may also be applied retroactively.

SE Cornerstone receives update on communication efforts

Submitted by Norm Park, Contracted Reporter for SECPSD South East Cornerstone Public School Division Director of Education Keith Keating provided a verbal report on a recent presentation regarding the division’s monitoring report on System Goal No. 4.

It seeks a systematic building, strengthening and maintenance of a two-way communication system

with internal and external stakeholders. The report was delivered to board members during their May 21 afternoon open business meeting.

This target has seen the administration and governing units meet needs at school levels, as well as leaving digital footprints across online platforms via social media guidelines.

The connection network saw the division leaders meet with a trio of south-

east political representatives, with MLAs Lori Carr, Michael Weger and Daryl Harrison convening with them personally along with Minister of Education Everett Hindley to cover a wideranging agenda.

There continues to be joint meetings with the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division that is also in southeast Saskatchewan.

The board meets with the regional teachers’ as-

sociation executive, and school community councils receive ongoing attention and interest via board member visitations among other levels of communication.

School and division levels of engagement have continued, Keating reported, including the annual school calendar processes, administrative council and groups, plus senior staff managers, co-ordinators, superintendents, human resources, etc., at least four

times per school year.

There are also a variety of connection programs with each community, as well as overall regional connections and media releases.

Keating noted near the end of his presentation that he has been able to visit 15 of the 35 schools in the division so far that included a tour and conversations with administrators about each school and its system progression.

Seeding over halfway point for most of the province

Ryan Young SaskToday.ca The provincial crop report indicates warmer weather provided a boost to seeding progress.

Saskatchewan farmers are 52 per cent of the way through seeding in the province, up from 29 per cent last week.

However, it’s still behind the five year average of 74 per cent and ten year average of 77 per cent.

Drier conditions allowed for more time in the field.

The southwest continues to lead at 74 per cent complete, followed by the westcentral region at 69 per cent, the southeast at 61 per cent, and the northwest at 55 per cent.

The east-central region is at 26 per cent and the northeast is not far behind at 25 per cent as conditions improved.

For cereal crops, durum is the most seeded at 74 per cent, spring wheat at 52 per cent, barley at 50 per cent, triticale at 45 per cent, canary seed at 36 per cent, and oats at 26 per cent.

For pulses, field peas are 77 per cent planted, lentils at 76 per cent, and chick-

peas at 55 per cent.

Mustard is farther ahead compared to other oilseed crops at 56 per cent, followed by canola at 38 per cent, and flax at 34 per cent.

Perennial forages are 23 per cent seeded in the province.

For crops already seeded, development is behind schedule “due to localized weather, leading to differences in temperature and moisture.”

The report stated, “fall

cereals are at 58 per cent of normal development, with one per cent ahead and 41 per cent behind in development. Spring cereals are 37 per cent normal, 63 per cent behind. Pulse crops are 45 per cent normal and 55 per cent behind. Oilseeds are at 27 per cent of their normal stage of development and 73 per cent behind. Perennial forage is 50 per cent at normal development, with two per cent ahead and 48 per cent behind. Annual for-

age is at 39 per cent normal development, with two per cent ahead and 59 per cent behind.”

Oilseed and spring-seeded crops are experiencing the most delays, while fall cereals and perennial forage are closer to expected stages, adds the report.

Crop damage was reported but it’s generally minor. Gophers, flooding, wind, frost and periods of heat were factors.

Topsoil moisture man-

aged to stay adequate through hotter weather.

Currently, crop land moisture is rated as 19 per cent surplus; 70 per cent adequate; and 11 per cent short.

Hayland topsoil moisture is 14 per cent surplus; 70 per cent adequate; and 16 per cent short.

Pasture topsoil moisture is: nine per cent surplus; 68 per cent adequate; 20 per cent short; and three per cent very short.

Police receive increased reports of dogs running at large in city

The Weyburn Police Service responded to 72 calls for service during the week of May 24 to May 31, 2026.

Sexual Offences Police received a complaint involving possible sexual offences against two young females on May 28. An investigation determined that an adult male had sexually assaulted both youths.

The male was arrested and charged with: • Sexual Assault (x2) • Invitation to Sexual Touching • Sexual Exploitation (x2) • Incest (x2) The accused was held in custody and appeared before a judge in Estevan on June 1, 2026. He is next scheduled to appear in Weyburn Provincial Court on June 2, 2026.

A publication ban was ordered by the court. As a result, no names or identifying information will be released.

Well-Being Check A concerned citizen contacted police regarding an elderly woman who appeared to be in distress while walking near their residence. Officers attended, identified the woman, and safely returned her to her family. The family was extremely grateful for the assistance.

The Weyburn Police Service would also like to recognize the compassion shown by members of our community and commend residents for looking out for one another.

This is the second incident of this nature within the past two weeks.

Dogs at Large The Weyburn Police Service has seen an increase in reports involving dogs running at large throughout the city. While some inci-

dents involve friendly animals, others have involved dogs attempting to attack animals that were legally confined on their owners’ property. Charges have been laid in several occurrences.

Pet owners are reminded of their responsibility to ensure yards, gates, and fences are secure to prevent animals from escaping and creating a risk to public safety.

Dangerous Driving Behavior Police observed a vehicle being driven in a manner that startled, distracted, and interfered with other motorists and pedestrians.

The driver had previously been charged more than five times over the past year for similar driving-related offences.

As a result, the driver received a sevenday license suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

While these penalties may seem severe, they reflect the seriousness of repeated dangerous driving behavior. The Weyburn Police Service reminds motorists that continued disregard for traffic laws can result in significant consequences designed to improve public safety.

Vandalism and Sign Theft Public property belongs to the entire community, and damage or theft affects more than just the asset itself. Acts of vandalism create unnecessary costs, consume staff resources, and can result in reduced access to public spaces and services.

Recent vandalism at River Park Campground has resulted in the public washrooms being permanently closed to general public use, demonstrating how repeated damage can negatively impact residents and visitors alike.

Norm Park/SaskToday.ca We have noted before how inept I could be at various sports but still enjoyed them to the maximum because it tested athletic skills, made for good exercise and brought people together for a common purpose that often blended into lasting friendships.

So when the opportunity arrived to try the game of cricket many years ago I quickly accepted the invitation to join a half-dozen fellow Canadian guys who were teaching upgrading classes to young cohorts in the wonderful country of Trinidad-Tobago.

This was during a vacation visit prior to my entering the country for the good part of a year about two years later. I was visiting relatives and their friends that included these fellow-Canadians.

The school’s cricket team challenged the professors and instructors to a one-day fete match and I was invited to be the seventh Canadian on their team. They assured me they were going to lose, but would do so with grace and no threats of reducing the upcoming English or Math examination marks. Our 11-man roster would be completed by recruiting a few Caribbean guys who actually knew how to play the game, including a couple of decent “bowlers” – i.e. pitchers if you want to sort of compare this sport to baseball.

One of our recruits informed me I was going to be a “silly mid-on.” Of course I had no idea what that was, but (using the baseball reference again), it turned out to be like a third-baseman setting up for a right handed batter he knew was going to bunt, but then doesn’t, and instead swings away and sends the baseball scorching down the path to the fielder 8 metres away. That’s a silly mid-on in cricket, or the best I could see it as. In other words, survival was going to be a key element. Other positions, or slips they called them, were filled with fun including a wicket keeper (catcher) who was the only fielder who was allowed to wear a fielding glove.

The ball was about the size of a baseball, but covered and seamed differently and of course, we Canadians lined up to bat as if we were playing baseball, ready to swing away at anything because, well even foul balls could lead to action. Big hits (home runs) were sixes and ground rule doubles were “fours,” I think. Batters had to run back and forth from one wicket to another to count a run and well … I had seen a few brief shots of cricket games, but definitely lacked the nuances of the game. As a result we seven Canadians scored very few runs and welcomed a tea break mid-game that actually was a rum break.

Needless to say, we lost big time and I ripped the knee out of the pants I was wearing making a diving catch that actually drew a decent round of applause from a spectator viewing area that included about 50 people. That was my highlight moment I suppose.

The important part was the fact we finished with laughs and a new appreciation of a super game I still don’t com-

pletely understand.

So, I went back to southern Ontario to my work as a sports reporter.

I was informed by a girl I knew well who worked in the concession area of the arena that there were two young newly arrived Trinidadian guys who had made it to a couple of hockey games and were enthralled with the action-laden sport.

She knew about my treks to their home country, so we were introduced.

Now I cannot recall their names, so let’s call them Roger and Tom for the sake of advancing the storyline.

They were really curious about the ice surface and since I knew the rink manager there was no problem in taking them down to the ice surface around the penalty box. The game was over and the ice had been resurfaced. We ventured out and Roger immediately took a backward pratfall but reported he was not hurt and, in fact, he rolled over on his hands and knees and closely examined and stroked the ice surface, wanting to know how the Zamboni worked, how deep the ice went etc. We helped him up and I showed them how to move on ice Canadian style, using the old shuffle and slide motions all Canadians use on ice surfaces (rinks or otherwise) if we are not on skates.

Two weeks later I entered the rink during a public skating period and lo and behold, there they were … Roger and Tom, on skates, mostly clinging to the boards, but enjoying the moment as they ventured out on occasion to do a version of skating that mostly involved walking on skates with a little sliding motion on occasion. A few weeks later, I again met up with them and this time they were out in the public skating time slot, but now had hockey sticks to hold them up and they had a puck and were enjoying their time in a separate section where they could take swipes at the puck before falling down, or restoring their balance by leaning on the sticks. A few local junior hockey players just out for a skate, stopped by and showed them a few obvious moves like how to rotate the wrists to raise the puck.

I suddenly realized these two guys were having fun with an entirely new game they had known nothing about.

They had learned what an icing and offside were and how penalties were dished out. This, I felt was somewhat similar to what I had encountered in their country.

Happy but hapless when it came to a new game. No future stardom for us in either sport, but there was pure enjoyment in learning a little bit about the other guys’ game for the sake of the game and sports in general.

Play the game not for fame, glory or cash but rather for the adventure of learning something new and the excellent opportunities to have a little sport focused fun without having to worry about talent levels because there was none. They were a pure, simple and memorable opportunities for 10 guys who tried the other guys’ sport … and won in many respects just by appreciating and enjoying something different in the athletic world.

Jeannette Rutten Jeannette Elaine Rutten, late of Yellow Grass, SK passed away on May 26, 2026 at the age of 80 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Mary Buehler; in-laws, Herman and Anna Rutten; several close friends and family members.

Province funds pedestrian crosswalks to support safety

A new pedestrian crossing is now in place at the corner of 16th Street and Fifth Avenue North, supporting safer travel for pedestrians in a busy area of the community.

The City of Weyburn recently installed two poles with flashing pedestrian lights and audible crossing signals at the intersection with support from the Government of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Traffic Safety Fund, administered through SGI. The program funded $10,936 for the project.

The crossing was

identified as a priority location due to its connection to Tatagwa Trails, proximity to a school zone, higher-speed traffic in the area and significant traffic volumes.

Between May 29 and June 6, more than 11,000 vehicles were recorded travelling through the indictated area.

“When we look at pedestrian safety, we consider how people are using the area every day and where additional visibility can make a meaningful difference,” said Jenna Borys, City of

Weyburn municipal engineer. “The new flashing lights and audible signals give both drivers and pedestrians clearer cues at the crossing, which supports safer movement through this corridor.”

Government of Saskatchewan has provided continued investment in traffic safety initiatives and grant programs.

“Funding opportunities like this help municipalities move forward with important safety improvements while keeping project costs manageable,” Borys said.

Local athletes well represented at pickleball provincials

Submitted Several Weyburn athletes competed at the Saskatchewan Pickleball Championship, held at the Regina Queen City Pickleball Hub on May 28 to 31.

With 425 athletes and 75 volunteers, it was the largest pickleball provincial tournament to date.

Women’s Singles and Men’s Singles Events Deana Mainil won silver in Women’s Full Court Singles 4.0+ (age 50+).

Women’s Doubles Events Deana Mainil won gold in Women’s Doubles 4.0+ (age 50+) with partner Nelly Helms of Saskatoon.

Janessa Grosenick and Karen Brolly won gold in Women’s Doubles 2.5 (age 10 – 56).

Mixed Doubles Events Deana Mainil won silver in Mixed Doubles Open 4.5+ (age 50+) with partner Dave Clarke of Regina Beach.

Jacquie Williams and Barry McKim won bronze in Mixed Doubles 3.0 (age 61 – 66).

Brenda Milatz won gold in Mixed Doubles 3.5 (age 57 -62) with partner David Reid from Regina.

Vickie Betker and Darcy Sidloski won silver in Mixed Doubles 3.0 (age 67+).

Men’s Doubles Events Bob Maurer won gold in Men’s Doubles 3.5 (age 60 – 65) with partner Kelly Lendsay of Saskatoon.

Athletes compete at district meet

The Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association district track meet was held at the Weyburn Comprehensive School on May 27.

The top Weyburn athletes who will advance to provincials are: Intermediate Boys Ajax Longman placed second in the 1,500 m, second in the 3,000 m and second in the 800 m.

Rylan Meier won first in the 800 m, finished second in the 200 and 400 m and placed second in long jump.

Ben Sawatsky placed third in the 800 m.

Jaym Bautista placed third in high jump.

Brenden Hope placed third in javelin.

Intermediate Girls Sophie Pollock won first in the 100 m, high jump and long jump, and

placed second in the 200 m. Lily Penner placed third in the 3,000 m. Persephonee Wilson won third in the 400 m.

Alyssa Kerr took first in the 80 m hurdles and javelin. Lauryn Chicoine won first in shot put and second in javelin. Eliza Gall placed third in the 80 m hurdles and triple jump.

Junior Boys Malley Sterling won first in the 100 and 200 m.

Judah Sawatsky won first in the 100 m hurdles.

Easton Spragrud won first in 400 and 800 m, and placed second in the 1,500 m.

Cole Payak won second in javelin and long jump. Cody Goski placed third in javelin.

Junior Girls Maggie Bryant won first in 1,500 m and second in the 3,000 m.

Senior Boys Aeryk Benning won first in the 100 and 200 m.

Ross Gill placed second in the 200 m and third in the 100 m.

Andrew Hatch won third in the 100 m hurdles.

Camden Husband placed first in the 1,500 m and second in the 3,000 m.

Tace Odima won first in the 400 and 800 m, and finished second in long jump.

Jack Bell won second in discus.

Senior Girls Peyton Lokken placed first in high jump, second in the 100 m and triple jump.

Zaniyah Odima won first in the 400 m, second in the 200 m and third in high jump.

Lilly Connery won second and Bailey Roy finished third in discus.

Randy Palmer SaskToday.ca Anyone who has followed the Western Canadian Baseball League for any amount of time can tell you all about how radically a team’s fortunes can change in a short amount of time.

Case in point, the Weyburn Beavers.

After taking a pair of mercy rule losses to the Saskatoon Beavers to open their campaign, the Beavers came as close as could be to finding the win column against Saskatoon on Saturday night.

Then on Sunday, they broke through.

Despite falling behind 6-0 early, the Beavers would rally in the later innings to tie the game and would score a pair in the ninth to secure a 9-8 victory in Saskatoon.

Weyburn 9, Saskatoon 8 A six-run third inning gave the Berries their early edge, but the Beavers got one back in the fourth and then put up a six-run frame of their own in the sixth to take the lead. Saskatoon then tied the game in the seventh, setting up the dramatic finish.

In a wild turn of events, both Jared Kramp and Robery Gurney were hit by pitches with the bases loaded, bringing home Hugh Montgomery and Joe Madill with the go-ahead and what would turn out to be a crucial insurance run.

A lead-off solo home run from Ethan Murdoch got the Berries back within one in their half of the ninth, and the Berries would get the tying run on base before Weyburn’s Gunner Ferguson got the next two batters to close things out.

Ferguson gave up only Murdoch’s homer in two solid innings of relief to pick up the win. Josh Pritchard started for the Beavers and allowed seven runs -- only two earned -- on eight hits while going seven innings.

Kramp finished the game 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, Anthony Cortese also knocked in a pair.

Murdoch had another phenomenal game for Saskatoon, going 5-for-5 with two doubles, the aforementioned homer and three runs scored. Nathan Houston was 2-for-4 with and crossed the plate once.

Michael Sall had a solid start for Saskatoon, allowing a single unearned run and one hit over five innings while striking out seven. Brody Wrench took the loss.

Weyburn Minor Hockey awards night celebrated players, coaches

Weyburn Minor Hockey celebrated success and achievements during their annual awards night, on May 19. Matthew Daunheimer and Kyle Kosier were awarded Volunteer of the Year.

The junior female official of the year was Sakoda Seitz, the junior male official of the year was Keran Seitz and the senior official of the year was Curtis Seitz.

The male team coach of the year was the U16AA coaching staff, and the female team coach of the year was Karsten Nielsen.
