The Canadiana Tour will bring together Canada’s brightest young orchestral musicians for a cross-provincial journey celebrating both classical masterworks and contemporary voices.

Raised in Weyburn, Alexander has performed with the South Saskatchewan Youth orchestra and the Regina Symphony Orchestra.

“There is no other way I would want to spend my life other than playing music,” said Alexander. “I study music with the hope of one day paying it forward and giving back to the communities that were so meaningful in my own musical journey.”

Weyburn Legion to celebrate 100th anniversary

Submitted The Royal Canadian Legion is celebrating its historic 100th anniversary in 2026, and Weyburn Branch 47 is marking this centennial with a community celebration and open house on Friday, July 17.

The landmark centenary highlights a century of nationwide service, sacrifice and community support since the veterans’ organization was first established in 1926.

Memorial Park will host a 24-hour honour guard on July 17, beginning at 9 a.m. Participants will stand on guard as a tip of the hat to those who have and those who continue to stand on guard.

Each participant raised

money through pledges to stand at the cenotaph for a one-hour time frame.

The Weyburn Public Library will provide children’s activities during the day with the Weyburn Credit Union taking over for the evening. Mini-stick challenges will be provided by the Weyburn Red Wings, while Seitz’s Rentals is providing bouncy houses.

The Legion will be open on July 17 for the full 24-hour period. The public is welcome to come take a stroll through the Lounge and take in the history that adorn the walls of the Lounge and Vimy Room.

Be sure to look through the Poppy Store for souvenirs and browse library

of free books and movies.

Grab a tub of popcorn and settle in the Vimy Room to watch war movies at anytime throughout the event.

Lunch will be available for purchase for $8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lounge hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Legion, along with Ryan Skjerdal, will host a smoked meat dinner at 5 p.m., with salads and buns for $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under.

Evening entertainment is provided by Twilight and JD Band and Last Train West, at no additional cost.

Campaign raises funds for Beaubier plane crash victim

Health ministry monitoring rabies cases

Jon Perez SaskToday.ca The Ministry of Health said residents should take every bat encounter seriously and immediately seek medical assessment after a potentially dangerous exposure, as rabies can be fatal once symptoms appear.

The ministry issued the warning as public health officials continue to monitor human exposures to bats and maintain province-wide access to rabies prevention and treatment.

The Ministry of Health said it received 13 reports across the province in 2025 involving people who had contact with bats that later tested positive for rabies. No information was provided on what happened to those who were exposed to bats that tested positive for rabies.

The Ministry of Health added that while human rabies cases remain extremely rare, bats continue to be the primary source of potential exposures in the province.

“If a person is unable to determine whether contact with a bat occurred , because they were sleeping, medicated, intoxicated or are a young child, they should see their family doctor, local emergency room department or call HealthLine 811 for assessment as soon as possible,” said the Ministry of Health.

Health officials also advised against touching a bat with bare hands. They

stressed that treatment may be necessary even when there are no visible injuries, as the animal’s bites and scratches are small and difficult to detect, making it impossible in some cases to rule out an exposure.

The ministry said bat exposures are treated as high-risk situations because rabies can be prevented if post-exposure treatment is

started before symptoms appear. Access to treatment is available across Saskatchewan, including smaller communities.

The ministry said provincial guidance and assessment tools are provided to health-care professionals through the Communicable Disease Control Manual, and that physicians consult local medical health officers

when determining whether rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is required.

Communities across the province are equipped to begin treatment without significant delays, and rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin are stocked year-round in urban, rural and northern communities, and are accessible in public health offices and hospitals.

SaskToday A GoFundMe campaign is underway for the victim of the plane crash near Beaubier on July 8.

The campaign, Support Evan and Annika Hansen, has raised $101,011, or 92 per cent of its $110,000 goal, as of 2:35 p.m. on July 10. The goal was increased due to the swift response from the public.

The campaign was started by Laurel Stickel on behalf of Annika Hansen (Zieber) and the Hansen and Zieber families.

It notes that Evan was involved in a “devastating” spray plane accident.

“He is currently fighting for his life in the University of Alberta Hospital,” the GoFundMe campaign states. “Eighty per cent of his body has been burned, and he has many life-threatening injuries that he is fighting to overcome.”

The campaign notes the couple was married five months ago, and the time since the accident has been a nightmare for Annika and the families.

Because Evan is in critical condition, Stickel wrote people are coming together as a community to support the couple emotionally, spiritually and financially.

“If you are able to give financially, we are endlessly grateful for even the smallest amount,” Stickel wrote.

All financial support will go to lost income as Evan, a farmer and a pilot,

Stickel said they are equally grateful for prayer, as they are in need of a miracle. Specific prayer requests include stabilizing Evan’s blood pressure, decreasing in swelling, safety from infections and healing in his lungs.

Haying season has started in SE area

Weather varied in the southeast as some areas began to see warm and sunny weather, according to the crop report for the period of June 30 to July 6. This allowed producers to finish spraying, while other areas are still delayed from wet and cold weather.

The Radville area received the most rainfall for this week with 83 millimetres (mm), followed closely by Churchbridge area with 80 mm. Rainfall varied throughout the region.

Surplus topsoil moisture decreased slightly compared to last week, with more of the region now reporting adequate levels.

Cropland topsoil moisture is: 31 per cent surplus; and 69 per cent adequate.

Hayland topsoil moisture is: 23 per cent surplus; 76 per cent adequate; and one per cent short.

Pasture topsoil moisture is: 23 per cent surplus; 75 per cent adequate; and two per cent short.

Crop staging varies throughout the region: • Five per cent of winter cereals are at the stem elongation stage, three per cent at flag leaf, 82 percent heading and 10 per cent at the dough stage.

• Three per cent of spring cereals are at the tillering

stage, 17 per cent tillering, 20 per cent at stem elongation, 34 per cent at flag leaf and 26 per cent heading.

• 18 per cent of flax crops are at the seedling stage, 76 per cent at stem elongation and six per cent flowering.

• Nine per cent of canola and mustard crops are at the seedling stage, 24 per cent at rosette, 33 per cent bolting and 34 per cent flowering.

• Five per cent of pulse crops are at the seedling stage, 41 per cent vegetative and 54 per cent flowering.

Haying season has started with four per cent cut.

First cut has been rated as 10 per cent excellent quality, 73 per cent good and 17 per cent fair. Pasture conditions have been rated as 52 per cent excellent, 32 per cent good, 15 per cent fair and one per cent poor.

The primary sources of crop damage this week were flooding, cabbage seedpod weevil, hail and gophers, with impacts ranging from minor to severe. Wind caused minor to moderate damage in some areas. Minor crop damage from various insects and disease has been reported. Continued scouting for these pests will ensure management actions can be taken if warranted.

Water released from SE reservoir

SaskToday The S as katchew an Water Security Agency (WSA) had released water from Grant Devine Lake near Alameda, and the diversion channel from Boundary Dam to Rafferty Dam has been opened.

In an email to SaskToday, the WSA said the current water level for Rafferty Reservoir is 550.07 metres, which is 0.43 m below the full supply level (FSL). Boundary Reservoir is at 560.71 m, which is 0.11 m lower than

FSL, while Grant Devine is 561.77 m, which is 0.23 m beneath its FSL. As of the afternoon of July 7, three cubic metres per second (m3/s) of water are being transferred from Boundary to Rafferty through the diversion channel. Approximately five m3/s is being released from Grant Devine Lake.

“Since spring runoff, WSA has completed several operations for the Boundary-Rafferty diversion channel with the release rate fluctuating depending

on inflows,” the WSA said in the email.

The same applies for releases from Grant Devine Lake, the WSA said. As part of the WSA’s international agreements, Grant Devine Lake and Rafferty Reservoirs are expected to be one metre below FSL by February 1 each year.

“The drawdown is expected to occur gradually during the year. If there are impacts to the public as a result of an operation, WSA will notify users downstream,” the WSA said.

Contrasting positions by Sask Party, NDP on AI data centre projects John Cairns SaskToday.ca The government and the opposition are once more at loggerheads over the issue of AI data centres in the province.

This week the NDP has been on the offensive regarding the Moose Jaw AI data centre project. Last year Carpere Valley Development Corporation, rebranded as Aztec, had announced plans to build a 150 megawatt AI data centre on the land of the former Valley View Centre. But that proposal, which has gone to City Hall, has drawn concerns from the public, with one resident launching a petition outlining concerns about the project.

In a news release July 10, NDP Trade and Export Development critic Kim Breckner blasted a lack of consultation on the Moose Jaw project, as well as the Bell AI Data Centre in the RM of Sherwood.

“The Sask. Party has failed to demonstrate that the data centre under construction in the Rural Municipality of Sherwood and the proposed data centre in Moose Jaw, create a long-term net benefit for the people of this province,” Breckner said in a statement.

“Further, they have failed to explain why these projects have not been subject to an environmental assessment. They have also failed to release detailed power

consumption agreements to address fears that Saskatchewan residents could be on the hook for increased power costs. They have failed to consult with the public and have ignored thousands of concerned residents in Moose Jaw.“ Breckner also said that their letters, questions in Estimates, questions in Question Period, and Freedom of Information requests on data centres “have all been blocked or gone unanswered by the Sask.

Party Government.”

“But we will not stop bringing forward your concerns. We will continue to demand answers and ensure your voice is heard,” said Breckner, who pointed to a new petition up on the NDP website at www.saskndp.ca/mjdatacentre.

The statement from the NDP drew scorn from the Sask Party government.

“At a time when jurisdictions across North America are competing for major private-sector investment, the NDP is predictably campaigning against projects that have the potential to create jobs and grow Saskatchewan’s economy,” the government responded in a statement.

“Our government will continue to support investment, backed by Saskatchewan’s regulatory processes, because we believe that Saskatchewan should be open for business.”

But why now, what’s up?

Well, we know the peak professional league team membership within our national game has apparently tapped out at seven in the National Hockey League. Recent and planned franchise additions are all slated for the U.S., preferably the more southern regions thanks to lower taxes and easier living conditions.

Quebec City keeps begging for a return engagement that is not forthcoming, and in fact NHL commissioner Mr. Bettman doesn’t even bother to give it lip service any more. Canadian teams are just getting in the way of the big business of running the current edition of the NHl. What with our funny coloured money that has to be exchanged, passport headaches, travel arrangements and much higher taxes for owners and players. Just too much bother.

So that’s why we need to turn our attention to our still-unique Canadian contribution to the professional athletic world, the Canadian Football League.

As noted in earlier column contributions I remain firm in the belief that the CFL game is a superior one to that which is practised by the neighbours to the south, the National Football League, where there are no Canadian teams to bother them when they want to spread wings.

But what remains stuck in many minds and hearts is the simple fact the CFL game is, quite honestly, a better game. Better rules, better scoring opportunities, bigger fields, better action. But the reality benefits remain on the NFL side since it is superior on another scale and that means money, plus player, fan base and franchise numbers.

In the meantime, the CFL seems to be stuck in neutral when it comes to future plans for fans and engagement.

Only two CFL teams made a profit last year. The Blue Bombers and Roughriders gave strong indications that it still can be done.

We know that in Toronto, the fan base is still pouting over the fact they were denied an NFL franchise decades ago. They managed baseball and basketball intrusions into those American games, but got a nada from the NFL. So if potential TO sponsors and fans ever get over their hissy fit, they could build a powerhouse CFL team, maybe just by taking a few notes from the franchise just down the road in Hamilton?

What got this guy thinking about CFL expansion once again were the recent two home games for the B.C. Lions staged in Kelowna, not Vancouver. B.C. Place was being given a face-lift to welcome teams that played soccer.

The two games in the temporarily-expanded Apple Bowl saw over 19,100 fans crowd into the facility twice in recent weeks to view some exciting CFL action.

And that’s what Stewart Johnston and the CFL board (if there is one) need to turn their attention to and quickly. Forget the tinkering with the CFL rules … how about expansion?

Kelowna displayed willingness, as a starter. Yes, the population of the city is just

over 172,000 but continues to grow and the metro area is home to more than 255,000 potential fans within easy driving distance.

The fact that eastern Canada only boasts of four CFL franchises is more than strange.

So Mr. Johnston would be well advised to go seeking some solutions while injecting a little bit of encouragement and excitement into a plan.

There has been more than a decade of talks and a couple of exhibition games played in Halifax, but no real plan for expansion has been made there, so we have to assume that travel costs and other barriers will limit direct Maritime involvement even though they embrace the Canadian-styled game.

So where else could the CFL go?

Well, how about London, Ont.? This is a city approaching 500,000 in population with an immediate metro population of over 630,000. That sounds like a good fan base in the making, especially with universities in that area playing the game and a strong business and investment community that might be persuaded to join the CFL fray.

Stadiums are there, ready to be expanded and refurnished.

What about Kitchner, Ont.? They, along with neighbouring Waterloo, feature a population base of over 700,000 and again, a strong business and industrial base to work with.

Quebec City? They were denied NHL entry in spite of the fact they boast an NHLsize arena with supporting scopes of services. So why not explore a CFL presence within their city of 593,000 or 860,000 in the metro area?

Existing CFL franchises carry fan volume and sponsorship statistics that are not as strong as these potential sites, so what’s holding you up Mr. Johnston?

A new half-billion dollar contract with a major sports television and streaming system with a wide range is in place. So we know you haven’t just been sitting behind a desk these past few months. Base CFL salaries have risen. So maybe now is the time to excite the existing fan base that has been slowly eroding for the past three years, with an announcement of a forthcoming 10th team for the CFL … preferably in eastern Canada, but if it turns out to be Kelowna … why not?

One city and its citizens just might have the power and interest to say yes to a CFL proposal, but they have to be asked first and then ownership pursued.

A franchise fee payment would excite and boost existing franchises and help them wake up to the potential that exists within the CFL, especially in Toronto where the Argonauts have toiled for too long as secondary tenants.

Yes, it’s time to cut the blather Mr. Johnston. It’s time for potential team owners to unleash the credit cards and get involved with something other than politics. That’s a landfill for losers. Do not cringe, but rather crank up the sound system and pump up interest in something that isn’t a museum or memorial but rather something that is alive, active and worthy of a few shout outs and stupid costumes on game days, signifying loyalty to a cause that doesn’t require an election.

Gold Wings celebrate 10th year of Esso Cup scholarships

Sara Parks SaskToday.ca A decade of community spirit, volunteer dedication and athletic excellence is being celebrated as the Esso Cup Scholarship Committee announces the 2026 recipients of the Gold Winga scholarships.

Graduating players Nola Exner and Julia Durr have been named this year’s award winners, each receiving a $1,500 bursary to support their continued education.

Exner: A volunteer, a mentor, a champion Nola Exner played three years for the Weyburn Gold Wings. Nola, originally from Regina, will be enrolled in business administration at McKendree University in Illinois.

During her time in Weyburn, Nola volunteered at the Communithon, at long-term care facilities and assisted many younger players to develop skills and gain confidence.

Outside of hockey, Nola has been employed as a

senior lifeguard and has competed on a national level playing competitive flag football.

Durr: Hockey roots Julia Durr started playing hockey in Estevan at four years of age. After playing U15 AA for two years, she graduated having played three seasons with the U18 AAA Gold Wings. Julia is enrolled in elementary education at McKendree University in Illinois, and will continue to enjoy hockey with the Bearcats there.

Julia kept busy in the off-season at hockey camps and assisting young players in their development.

10th anniversary The announcement marks the 10th anniversary of the Esso Cup Scholarship Program, a legacy born from the national spotlight that shone on Weyburn in 2016.

“Once awarded the hosting rights, a very dedicated group of 20 committee members started meeting monthly in April of 2015,

a full year prior to the Esso Cup,” said Dale Renz.

The Weyburn Gold Wings participated in the 2014 championship in Hamilton, Ont. The Gold Wings defeated the Edmonton Thunder to claim the gold medal. It was after that event that an organizing committee decided to make application to host the 2016 cup in Weyburn, said Renz, who co-chaired the 2016 organizing committee alongside Pete Schaefer.

The 2016 Weyburn Esso Cup host committee was made up of John Corrigan, Dale Renz, Reed Anderson, Mike Kaip, Dave Harazny, Peter Schaefer, Mathew Warren, Dave Creurer, Kelly VandeSype, Cliff Anderson, Ron Fellner and Ed Bourassa, Chad Kish, Joanne Foote, Becky Tuchscherer, Andrea Corrigan, Andrea Harazny, Cindy Swanson, Rose Ripplinger, Ray Erickson and Joleen Tuchscherer.

The effort to host Canada’s U18 women’s club championship was a

monumental community undertaking. More than 110 volunteers stepped up, with another 30 on standby.

Many local businesses rallied to support the event.

Three platinum sponsors, Prairie Sky Co-op, South Country Equipment and the Weyburn Review/This Week each contributed $10,000 to ensure the success of the national event.

More than 1,000 fan event ticket packages were sold.

“The Gold Wings Hockey Club wasn’t able to win a medal that year but represented our community very well,” said Renz.

Profits were shared with KidSport, Weyburn Minor Hockey and the U18 league scholarship fund, and were used to remodel the Gold Wings dressing room.

But the committee’s vision went further.

“Each year, up to three graduated Gold Wings are awarded $1,500 scholarships to assist with their continued education,” said Renz. “Right from the first meeting, it was decided

that supporting player’s education was an important goal and would be a legacy for any profits.”

In the fall of 2016, an Esso Cup Scholarship Committee was formed, made up of Ed Bourassa, Becky Tuchscherer, Rose Ripplinger, Deron Fahlman and Dale Renz. After 10 years, the original committee is still together promoting and approving scholarship applications.

“The main difference from 2016 is that the first years we awarded three

$1000 scholarships and four years ago we increased the amount to three $1,500 awards,” said Renz, adding that all graduating Gold Wing players who are continuing their education can apply.

“These funds would not have been available without the financial support of Hockey Canada and our business community and the City of Weyburn,” said Renz. “Many thanks to the organizing board and the many volunteers who worked so hard.”

Randy Palmer SaskToday.ca The Weyburn Beavers won 1-0 over the Lethbridge Bulls during regular action on Sunday night.

The Beavers prevailed in the lowest scoring game of the season in

the WCBL, with Robert Gurney knocking home Brayden Mayencourt with the lone run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth.

That was enough for Bill Hosegood to pick up the victory for the Beavers thanks to two innings of shutout relief,

but not before an absolutely stellar outing from Zach Raichel to get to that point. Raichel would end up tossing seven shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out 12 in taking the no decision.

Adryen Teitz was solid in his own right as the Bulls starter, giving up three hits over 5 ⅔ while striking out five. Bryce McGuire was the losing pitcher after giving up the run in the eighth.

Xander Meisser had a pair of hits for the Bulls.

Okotoks 12, Weyburn 6 July 11 Weyburn took a 6-3 lead into the final two innings of regulation, but the Dawgs scored a run in the eighth and then got a tworun home run from Aiden Dougherty in the ninth to tie the game. That’s where things remained until the 11th, when Okotoks scored six runs to put the contest

away.

Landon Kauffman went 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBI for the Dawgs, while Jordan Kievman was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Emmet Stacher had a tworun home run as his lone hit and scored two runs.

Evan Lehnart had a solid start for the Dawgs, pitching five shutout innings and allowing three hits. Max McCraray picked up the win after holding the Beavers without a hit over

the final three innings and striking out seven.

Trevor Dale went 2-for4 with two runs for Weyburn, Robert Gurney also crossed the plate twice.

Josh Pritchard put together a quality start for the Beavers, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits over 7 ⅔ innings, striking out seven and walking three. Gunner Ferguson was the losing pitcher after giving up five runs, three earned, in the 11th.
