Murals in Jubilee Park Heat and mosquitos has not stopped the Weyburn Arts Council and volunteers from the community from wrapping up the painting of its sixth mural in Jubilee Park. This mural was the number one winner in a series of murals that the public was able to vote on in 2024. Leena Honig’s submission depicts our Weyburn Watertower, some wheat, the sun and baseball. Submitted The Weyburn Arts Council is pleased to be hosting its annual Summer Gifted event on August 8 in Jubilee Park, Weyburn. The day starts at 10 a.m. and wraps up at 4 p.m.

This year they have a number of youth entrepreneurs joining in and displaying their talents. A number of handmade crafted items will be for sale, from jewelry to pottery, paintings to baking, a number of wood workers and carvers will also be in attendance.

As this is a community event, a number of not-for-profit organizations will be present,

SaskToday Weyburn Fire Department responded to a structure fire at an apartment building in the 400 block of First Avenue NW at approximately 9:21 p.m. on July 30.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered light smoke throughout the building. Crews investigated the source, checking individual suites and the building’s exterior before locating the fire in a crawl space beneath the apartment building.

The fire was quickly contained and extinguished. Firefighters then pressurized the hallways to ventilate the building and direct smoke out through windows and doors.

Four Weyburn Fire Department vehicles responded, including the command, engine, ladder and rescue trucks, with 14 firefighters on scene.

Weyburn Police Service and Emergency Medical Services also attended and assisted with the response.

No injuries were reported. Residents were able to return to the building at approximately 12:30 a.m.

Acting Fire Chief Mike Wock reminds residents to call 911 whenever they hear a fire alarm.

“Do not assume someone else has called or that the building’s alarm system is being monitored,” said Wock. “It is never wrong to call 911 when an alarm is sounding.”

Weyburn Fire Department thanks the building’s residents for their patience and cooperation while crews worked to extinguish the fire, ventilate the building and ensure it was safe for occupants to return.

Water treatment plant reports no quality impacts

SaskToday We y b u r n ’s Wa t e r Treatment Plant maintained stable operations and didn’t report any drinking water impacts throughout June, according to a report by Jihoon Kim, superintendent, presented to council.

The report confirmed that all routine and precautionary water quality verifications were completed successfully, with routine bacteriological sampling and quarterly permit-required laboratory tests returning no detectable impacts. Follow-up testing was also done after power interruptions and pressure-related events in June, and all additional representative samples were confirmed as not detectable, with re-

sults shared with the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency.

In terms of production, the plant treated 130,761 cubic metres of water in June, with a daily average of 4,358.70 cubic metres, which is a slight decrease from May’s daily average of 4,370.90 but remaining consistent with season demand.

In his operational summary to council on July 13, Kim’s report said that June’s activities were focused on regulatory compliance, operational stability, water quality assurance, and system reliability.

SaskToday The Weyburn Fire Department released its activity report for June, highlighting a busy month of emergency responses, rigorous training, and active community participation.

Acting Fire Chief Mike Wock, in his report to council, reported that the department responded to 25 calls for service in June, accumulating 174.5 hours of emergency response work. The department, which consists of six full-time career staff and 23 paid-on-call firefighters, has now logged 109 emergency responses year-to-date in 2026.

Fire crews participated in four training nights throughout June, focusing on critical operational skills. Training topics included MSA Air Monitoring Equipment training, basic pump operations Engine 51, Wildland 51, and Utility 51, Wildland and Urban interface and Wild-

land equipment review, drafting with Engine 51, Rescue 51, portable tanks, and tanker shuttle operations.

The department had 137 training hours in June, bringing the yearly total to 908 hours across 22 training nights and three meeting nights.

Weyburn firefighters were highly visible at community events throughout the month. Crews attended the Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show on June 2 and 3, participated in Legion Decoration Day on June 7, hosted a Burn Fund Barbeque at the Car Show on June 20, and provided presence at the Young Fellows Concert and Fireworks on June 25.

The department completed tire replacements on Tanker 51, Engine 51, and Rescue 51. Parts are currently on order for a front monitor repair on Tanker 51, which also requires a new control box.

Nature Sask: Owl fledglings will take flight

Following a spring of finding a mate and tending to eggs, the prairies have come alive with a new crop of young birds. Among these are the endangered Burrowing Owl. From mid-July to the end of August, Burrowing Owl young are learning to hunt and fly. They are often drawn to roadways because the road surface tends to be warmer than surrounding grasslands, attracting many small insects and rodents.

“Motorists can help reduce the risk of owl-vehicle collisions by slowing down near known or potential nest sites and being on the lookout for low flying owls,” said Grace Pidborchynski, coordinator for Operation Burrowing Owl at Nature Saskatchewan.

Burrowing Owls are about nine-inches tall, with mottled brown and white feathers, bushy white ‘eyebrows’, and long featherless legs. They are often found

nesting in pastures that has been well grazed, as the short grass allows them to easily spot predators.

Burrowing Owls nest in abandoned burrows excavated by badgers, ground squirrels, or other burrowing mammals, and may be seen standing on their burrow, sitting on nearby fence posts, or foraging in the ditches. Many young Burrowing Owls are killed by motorists each year while foraging along the

road. There is an estimated population of 270 breeding owls in Canada, making the survival of each juvenile critical for the survival and growth of the population.

Steven Wilson SaskToday.ca With the release of the 2025 Police-Reported Crime Statistics from Statistics Canada last week, Saskatchewan once again finds itself with the highest Crime Severity Index (CSI) in the country.

The province’s CSI sits at 146.64, nearly double the national average of 75.

However, local criminologist Dr. Krystal Glowatski is warning residents against using the data as the sole indicator of a community’s well-being.

“The CSI tells us something about crime. It doesn’t tell us everything about safety, because safety and crime are two very different things,” Glowatski said.

While the provincial average is high, individual communities vary wildly.

Weyburn is a notable outlier, boasting a much lower Crime Severity Index of 70.83 in 2025. This contrasts sharply with other Saskatchewan cities like North Battleford, which recorded a CSI of 477.10, and Prince Albert at 285.01.

Glowatski noted that the index is a descriptive statistic, meaning it ac-

counts for the volume and severity of reported crimes but fails to explain why they occur. Relying solely on the numbers without examining contextual factors, such as access to addiction support, housing, and education, can lead to a misunderstanding of community safety.

The ‘dark figure of crime’ A critical limitation of the CSI is that it only measures police-reported incidents. Glowatski pointed out that many crimes go unreported due to a lack of public awareness, varying policing practices, or the relationship between residents and police.

To illustrate this, she shared a personal example involving a “goose garden” she set up in front of her studio. Despite several instances of theft and vandalism, she chose not to report the incidents to the police.

“I don’t want to see somebody’s life get ruined over the theft of a goose or the destruction of a ceramic piece that I made,” she explained. Instead, Glowatski said she would rather have a conversation with the perpetrators to understand what drove their actions,

whether it was boredom, isolation, or a troubled home life.

Because incidents like these are handled outside the justice system, they become part of what criminologists call the “dark figure of crime,” acts that never make it into the official statistics.

Looking beyond root causes When discussing the factors driving crime, Glowatski cautioned against oversimplifying complex issues or pointing to a single “root cause” like poverty or mental illness.

“Poverty doesn’t make somebody a criminal, and most people experiencing poverty don’t commit serious crime,” she said.

“What research does show us is that crime and victimization are patterned.

They’re associated with social and economic conditions. When disadvantages accumulate, communities can become more vulnerable to harm.”

Glowatski, whose expertise lies in restorative justice, stressed the importance of proactive, community-based solutions over reactive punishments.

“When we are address-

ing crimes that have already been committed, we are already past the point of being able to do anything besides address that harm and put a Band-Aid on that situation,” she said.

She pointed to the role social media plays in disconnecting people and fueling unaccountability, adding that rebuilding face-to-face relationships is key to reducing harm.

“How do we create spaces where teenagers have somewhere to go, where elderly people aren’t feeling isolated in care homes?” Glowatski asked.

“How do we create a sense of belonging in communities where people feel that they have a stake in the overall well-being of the community?”

By focusing on connection and providing safe spaces for vulnerable groups, Glowatski believes communities can foster the ontological security needed to bring crime rates down naturally.

“You can’t hate up close,” she added. “If we have stronger relationships in our communities that connect us to one another, that’s where we will start to see a reduction in harm.”

Sask. Lotteries Yvette Orpiano won $200,000 on an Emerald Mine 10X scratch and win ticket. Orpiano purchased her winning ticket from the Co-op located at 405 MacLean Industrial Drive in Stoughton.

“This was my first time buying this ticket,” she recalled. “I stood there and checked it after I’d purchased it and scanned it on the ticket checker three or four times — I just couldn’t believe it.”

The Stoughton resident said she was so surprised by the win that she asked the cashier to verify what she was seeing.

“There were so many zeroes to count!” she laughed. “She hugged me and we just couldn’t believe I had won!”

Once the win sank in, Orpiano shared the exciting news with her family.

“I called my husband and then my brother in the Philippines—they could hardly believe it when I called as well.”

One of the first things on her list is a long-awaited trip to visit family.

“I plan on visiting my brother and family back home because I haven’t seen them in nine years,” she smiled. “My youngest kids haven’t even met my family yet.”

Orpiano also plans to help her son with university expenses, pay some bills and put money away for the future.

“I was so happy that I was crying when I found out,” she said. “I’m just so thankful!”

Fatal highway collisions spike 178% in province

Steven Wilson SaskToday.ca Saskatchewan RCMP are sounding the alarm after a staggering surge in fatal highway crashes across the province this summer.

According to Superintendent Grant St. Germaine, the officer in charge of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Traffic Services, there have been 51 fatal collisions resulting in 62 deaths so far this year. While overall numbers are only slightly lower than the total at this point last year, the sheer volume of fatal incidents over the summer months has police deeply concerned.

“So that number is high, but how we reported it, it’s gone extremely high since June,” St. Germaine said. “The numbers from June 1st to now I think are up something like 178 per

cent from what they were the same period last year.”

To put the statistics into perspective, police have responded to 5,200 reportable crashes this year, averaging nearly 25 per day.

Just under one per cent of those collisions have been fatal. However, St. Germaine emphasized the human toll, noting that 50 or 60 families have been devastated by these losses.

Impairment and drugs A major driving force behind the summer spike is a sharp increase in impaired driving.

Roughly 45 per cent of fatal collisions this year involve drugs or alcohol as a causal factor, up from roughly 33 per cent last year. St. Germaine noted that while impaired driving had been on a downward trend for about 15 years, those numbers are unfortu-

nately climbing again.

He pointed directly to cannabis legalization as a contributing factor.

“People are using drugs and then making the choice to drive, and they’re saying, well, it’s okay, it’s legal to have it, possess it and to use it, but it’s not legal to be driving a vehicle when you’ve been using it,” St. Germaine said. “It’s like they’re not adding the two together to come up with an equation that says I shouldn’t be driving.”

Speeding and seatbelts St. Germaine cited speeding and a lack of seatbelt use as the other major contributors to highway deaths. He noted that many ejections happen on gravel roads when a driver hits a freshly graded patch of loose gravel, loses control, and rolls into a ditch.

He added that many

drivers treat the posted speed limit as a “rough general idea” and consistently travel 12 to 18 km/h over the limit.

St. Germaine shared a recent anecdote of encountering a pickup truck travelling 148 km/h in a 100 km/h zone south of Prince Albert.

“If his front tire one or the other side happens to blow out ... he’s gonna immediately lose control of that vehicle. At 148, it’s not recoverable,” St. Germaine warned. “He’s going in the ditch, it’s gonna roll, and if he’s not wearing a seatbelt, guaranteed he’s gonna be ejected and in all likelihood gonna be killed.”

“100 per cent preventable” The overarching message from the RCMP is that these tragedies do not have to happen. St. Ger-

maine pointed to a recent multi-vehicle collision in Martensville that required STARS Air Ambulance to transport two people to Saskatoon with life-threatening injuries. He said the crash, which is still under investigation, was likely caused by a driver failing to yield at an intersection.

“I think probably the most frustrating thing from a police perspective is that in all of these incidents, they’re preventable,” St. Germaine said. “People make choices and do things and end up breaking the law.”

Saskatchewan RCMP are conducting increased check stops and targeted enforcement starting this August long weekend, a campaign that will carry straight through to the September long weekend in an effort to stem the tide of fatal crashes.

Farmland leases awarded by Weyburn council

SaskToday The City of Weyburn has awarded new fiveyear lease contracts for its municipally-owned agricultural lands, securing a combined annual revenue of $159,885 for the 20272031 crop years.

The tender process closed June 29 and attracted two bids for the 2,080 acres of city-owned farmland located in various areas near Weyburn.

The existing leases are set to expire at the end of the 2026 crop year.

Gaab Farms Inc. sub-

mitted bids of $80 per arable acre for multiple parcels, while Dan Pulfer submitted higher bids of $126 per arable acre for several locations.

The tender included a clause to give first right of refusal to the current lessees on the highest bid price. Due to this clause, Gaab Farms Inc. was offered to lease locations 4 through 6 at a rate of $126/ acre, which they chose to exercise.

No bids were received for locations 1, and 7 through 11, therefore the current lease holders were offered an extension to their leases at the price of their current lease, which they accepted.

Hot conditions in much of the province have caused crops to rapidly progress, which benefited crops that are behind in some areas but had a negative impact on those in drier areas.

Crop conditions remain variable with most crops in good condition, according to the week crop report for the period of July 21 to 27.

Many areas experienced humid conditions, which posed challenges for haying efforts but progress was made with some producers in southern regions wrapping up. Fungicide application is winding down for later-seeded crops, and some producers are starting to shift their attention to preparing for harvest.

There was limited rainfall in the province aside from scattered thunderstorms. The limited precipitation caused adequate topsoil moisture levels to fall last week.

Cropland topsoil moisture is: five per cent surplus; 67 per cent adequate; 27 per cent short; and one per cent very short.

Hayland topsoil moisture is: four per cent surplus; 64 per cent adequate; 31 per cent short; and one per cent very short.

Pasture topsoil moisture is: two per cent surplus; 58 per cent adequate; 36 per cent short; and four per cent very short.

Most winter cereal crops are in good to excellent condition as they approach harvest, while most spring cereal crops are in good to excellent condition as heads fill. Oilseed crops are largely in good condition, but the high temperatures during flowering

periods stressed some crops. Most oilseed crops are now out of flowering stage and in podding stage.

Approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of pulse crops are in good to excellent condition. However, a notable portion are in fair condition, and some are in poor condition due to moisture stress earlier in the growing season.

Producers continued haying this week despite humid conditions slowing cutting and baling. For first cuts of hay crops, 50 per cent have been baled or silaged, 28 per cent have been cut and are in swath, while 22 per cent remain standing. A few producers have had a second cut from their hay crops, with 6 per cent being cut a second time and one per cent being baled or silaged.

In terms of hay quality for first cuts, 29 per cent is excellent, 62 per cent is good and nine per cent is fair. Second cuts of hay are fair to good in quality.

Heat and dry soil conditions were the main causes of crop stress last week.

Producers in southern and western regions noted rain would help crops set seed.

Minor levels of cabbage seed pod weevil, aphid and gopher damage were observed in a few areas last week.

Producers are busy finishing in-crop spraying while some are starting to prepare for harvest by servicing equipment, cleaning out bins and planning desiccation. Producers are reminded to prioritize safety and exercise caution when working in the field and around farm equipment.

Carbon monoxide is a danger

SaskToday With summer in full swing, SaskEnergy is reminding the public that carbon monoxide dangers aren’t limited to the winter months.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odourless, colourless, tasteless gas produced when fuels such as natural gas, propane, gasoline or wood are burned. Without proper ventilation or air supply, CO can build up in enclosed spaces such as homes, cottages and campers, creating a serious risk of illness or death, SaskEnergy warns.

CO poisoning can happen to anyone but some people are more susceptible than others. Elderly, infants and those with heart or respiratory problems are more likely to experience effects of CO poisoning.

During the summer months, certain conditions can increase the risk of CO entering a home. For example, portable, wall- or window-mounted air conditioners that exhaust air outdoors can create negative pressure, or depressurization. Depressurization occurs when air is exhausted from the home faster than fresh outdoor air can enter. This can draw combustion gases, including CO, back into the home from fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, water heaters and ranges.

Preventing CO Exposure To reduce the risk of CO exposure and depressurization: • Have fuel-burning appliances inspected and maintained regularly.

• Check that external exhaust vents are free of dirt, leaves and debris.

• Ensure your outdoor or window AC units are not placed too close to potential sources of CO, such as appliance vents, barbecue grills, idling cars or generators.

• Watch for signs of poor ventilation such as lingering odours or stuffy air.

• Open a window or door slightly to allow fresh air into the home when running an air conditioner that exhausts air outdoors.

• Avoid running multiple devices that exhaust air from the home at the same time, such as kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans and air conditioners that exhaust indoor air outdoors.

Follow your Senses • SaskEnergy adds an odour to natural gas so you will know if there’s a problem. If you smell a foul odour similar to rotten eggs, sewer, or skunk, there may be a gas leak.

• You cannot see natural gas. If there is a vapour, ground frosting, or a significant area of brown vegetation, that could be a sign of a gas leak. In wet or flooded areas, watch for continuous bubbling. In drier conditions, watch for dust blowing from holes in the ground .

• If you hear a high-pitched hissing or roaring noise, there may be a gas leak.

How SaskEnergy Responds In the event of a natural gas emergency, SaskEnergy and local community response teams will: respond to the suspected site immediately, assess the source of the problem and make sure the site is cleared of anyone whose safety may be at risk, and communicate and advise customers regarding a resolution plan.

Other Summer CO Safety Tips • Start gasoline-powered lawn mowers outside the garage and away from air intakes to the home.

• Never use a barbecue, generator or other fuel-burning equipment indoors or near an air intake.

• Ensure your home, RV, camper or cottage is equipped with working CO alarms.

Norm Park/ SaskToday.ca I realize I am swimming upstream on this topic, but am going to try to explain why I was not captivated by the recent World Cup of Soccer surge. I’m more of a casual observer, it seems.

I did, on occasion attempt to view a few of the 100 or 200 World Cup matches that were recently staged in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, but I’m pretty sure my total viewing experiences didn’t last beyond 20 minutes.

For one thing, it seems to me a lot of soccer matches seem to go on for exceptionally lengthy periods of time with no obvious expiry date.

So when a game’s so-called playing time takes up more hours than a Donald J. Trump speech, you know they may have some issues.

Donnie Deflector’s rally-style speeches have a tendency to go on and on and on with no established theme or finishing point and there appears to be a similar scenario for the beautiful game, as some want to call it.

The final World Cup game was an example of why I, and maybe a few other casual observers, find the game a bit of a viewing challenge.

I wasn’t sure when it was supposed to end, but it didn’t matter because I quit watching about eight minutes into some so-called action. I believe the game went over three hours, but I could stand corrected.

I viewed about 1,231 lateral passes, 35 pass backs to the goaltender who then kicked the ball back to midfield, where the same rinse and repeat activities took place. I later read that even with added time, the score ended 1-0 for Spain, in case you weren’t aware of that by now.

And within that allocated three hours, I later read that Argentina managed exactly two, yes TWO shots on goal. No wonder they lost by such a huge margin.

It seems that in soccer, if more than three goals are scored, it’s a blow out for the winning team. Soccer does not feature a lot of goalmouth activity, other than headers from corner kicks. Otherwise, the goaltenders have time for a coffee break until they get the ball from their own teammates, who want them to kick it back down the “pitch”.

Now to try to view the activities on a more positive note, I will admit that this global game has a huge and excitable fan base that you have to admire.

But, the price of the tickets became totally ridiculous. I read about one guy who sold his car for $20,000 so he could buy a ticket in the upper deck for a quarter final game. I wonder what his wife and kids had to say about that executive decision. Or, I’m guessing he didn’t have either.

But enthusiastic fans cannot be denied

and it was fun to observe them and their antics before and after games, and often during the game. We know that Donnie Deflector fell asleep during the one game he did attend, and then tried to make himself the centre of attention when the time came for Spain to celebrate. He had to be steered offstage by that other grifter, FIFA president Infantino, and the Spanish team captain so they could have a team picture. I actually did watch a recording of that Deflector incident, and it was just too funny and more entertaining than the game itself. But of course, I’m guessing because I had not watched 97 per cent of the game.

The sore loser fight and Argentina’s refusal to respect the winning team didn’t help end the more than month-long spectacle with any reasonable sense of grace, but who cares?

And if you want to form an argument regarding soccer playing time … just try watching an NHL playoff game when it goes into a third overtime period at 1:30 a.m.

So argument accepted.

I admit I still don’t quite understand the essences of the penalty kicks or penalty infractions, but I do quite enjoy watching players flop to the ground in near fatal agony after casual contact with an opposition member, trying to “sell” a penalty with a referee close at hand.

Sometimes no penalty is rendered and the near comatose victim will suddenly arise and miraculously shake off the careerending injury to get ready to take another side pass from a grinning teammate. In hockey we call it a dive after absorbing a high stick or cross check and it results in a two-minute penalty. Just saying, no game is perfect or beautiful.

What I did view with pleasure was a wonderful cross-cultural mix where fans managed to get along with a true spirit of togetherness, no matter what team they were cheering for and that even included Iran. That team had to rest in Mexico between their games in the United States for obvious reasons.

These globalist fans were teaching the American fans how to enjoy and celebrate an event without the use of guns or deportations.

So play on Champions, Premier and other leagues, enjoy your beautiful game.

As for me, I’ll be checking out some NHL games soon enough and catching a few not-so-precious moments as the Blue Jays disintegrate and the Riders try to get even with the Elks.

Oh, just one more thing …when did a zero become a nil? I’m sure some soccer fan can explain. Final score … zip to zip is nil to nil. In other words, zeros. I’ll leave you to figure that one out. I have to empty the dishwasher now, so I have nil time for research.

Ryan Dauphinee went 3-for-5 and finished a triple away from the cycle with two runs and three RBI for Weyburn.

Brayden Mayencourt was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBI, Will Sevier hit a grand slam in the fourth inning.

Quinton Foster was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs over three innings of relief.

Weyburn 11, Regina 9 July 31 A six-run third inning staked the Beavers to a 9-6 lead, but Regina would rally with three runs in the sixth to tie things up.

Weyburn saw to it there would be no extra innings, though, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Ryan Dauphinee led the Beavers with a 2-for-4 outing that included a home run, double, two runs and four runs batted in. Robert Gurney went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, while Will Sevier was 3-for-5 with a run and crucial seventhinning RBI. Noah Brooks had three hits and scored two runs, Trevor Dale knocked in a pair.

Josh Pritchard got the start for Weyburn and allowed nine runs on 11 hits over six innings, Trey Watson tossed a scoreless seventh for the save.

Brady Bye went 2-for3 with a home run and three RBI for the Red Sox, Dan Castellanos knocked in three runs. Ian Montz crossed the plate twice and had two RBI, Carson Cox and Jake Fowler each

scored a pair of runs.

Kris Hahn started for Regina and gave up nine runs, seven earned, on 12 hits in 2 ⅔ innings, Vittorio Iacobucci pitched 3 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief. David Gordon took the loss after giving up the runs in the seventh.

Regina 8, Weyburn 4 July 31 The Beavers scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, but the Red Sox came right back with six runs in their half of the inning to go ahead for good.

Fowler hit a triple for the lone extra base hit for Regina in the nightcap, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of runs. Castellanos went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, Ty Martinez knocked in a pair of runs.

Sam Jackson had a solid outing for Regina on the mound, giving up three runs on eight hits over five innings and striking out seven to earn the win.

Colt Uphold hit a pair of doubles and had an RBI for Weyburn, who had eight of their nine starters get at least one hit in the game. Hugh Montgomery was 2-for-3 and scored a run, Robert Gurney hit a double for his lone hit and had an RBI. Maddock Day got the start for Weyburn and was the losing pitcher after giving up six runs on nine hits over 4 ⅓ innings.

Swift Current 14, Weyburn 9 July 30 The 57’s scored six runs in the third inning and took a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth when the Beavers rallied with five runs to get back into things. Swift Current kept adding offence, though, and Weyburn was unable to respond.

The teams combined for 12 extra base hits in the game, with each hitting five doubles.

Hudson Unger finished a home run away from hitting for the cycle with a 3-for-5 effort that included a double, triple and two runs scored. Mace Wheeler was 3-for-6 with three RBI, Jake Hiromoto finished 2-for-5 with three runs.

Keagan Knowler got the start for the 57’s and allowed six runs on six hits over three innings, Mason Fauser took over in the fourth and pitched into the ninth, allowing a single run on four hits to earn the win.

Joe Madill also just missed hitting for the cycle for Weyburn, going 3-for-5 with a home run, double, two runs and two RBI. Noah Brooks went 2-for-4 and scored three runs, Colt Uphold was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Brandon Berg allowed six runs on six hits over the first two innings and was the losing pitcher.

Submitted Team South captured the Halliday Cup by earning the highest overall point total at the Saskatchewan Summer Swim Provincials in Regina from July 25 and 26, a tremendous accomplishment that reflects the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of every swimmer and coach.

Obituaries

Marlene Ridgway

Marlene Yvonne Ridgway, nee Defoe, was born on April 19, 1940 in Swan River, Manitoba and passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026 in Regina, Saskatchewan.

She leaves behind, to carry her precious memory, her son Kevin (Alison) and their family Shane (Amy), Esmae, Freya and Levi; Jacquelynn (Dustin) and their daughter, Autumn; Dylan (Emma); and Bryson; daughter Colleen (Michael) and their family Brayden (Hunter), Carter (Olivia) and Shelby (Levi); and daughter Glenda and her son Kaden. She also leaves behind brothers Maurice (Bev) and Wayne (Shelley) and brother-in-law Ken (Phyllis) along with many nieces and nephews, other family and friends. Marlene was predeceased by her beloved husband Glen; mother, Laurean and stepfather Leo Defoe; father, Durward and stepmother, Violet Lukenbill; brothers and sisters, Myrtle, Don, Gordon, Ivan, Durward, Lorraine, Dot and Mervin and many much-loved in-laws; and great grandsons Ezra and Isaac along with other extended family members. Marlene was raised in Swan River and eventually on a farm outside of Minitonas, Manitoba where she learned many homemaking skills and how to care for farm animals – even the geese who liked to chase her. She continued her education to Grade 8, the highest level taught at the one-room school near the farm. At 15, she moved to Alberta with her brother, Durward, and his family and eventually at 17, worked at Kresge’s diner next to the RCMP detachment where she met her soulmate, Glen. The two married on the coldest day of the year - November 14, 1959 after Glen moved from the RCMP to the Calgary City Police. Glen called her a “natural born mother” when their son, Kevin, was born in February of 1961 and Colleen in November of 1962.

In 1966 they were given the opportunity to make another change and move to the McDougall (Glen’s mother’s side of the family) family farm in Colgate, Saskatchewan. Their third child, Glenda, was born in 1968. Marlene became a farmer’s wife with all its’ varied tasks from cooking, baking, gardening, herding cattle, driving tractors and grain trucks, doing moisture tests, running to town for parts, looking after sick calves that convalesced in her basement and parenting three kids that were involved in sports and 4-H. Marlene also took local classes in sewing, upholstery, flower arranging, painting and furniture refinishing. In 1985 she returned to the workforce, for a few years, as a parent aide for the Department of Social Services and in 1992 she completed her Grade 12 by correspondence which was a proud achievement for her.

She built many memories with her family through their daily chores, attending church each Sunday, attending kids’ sports and through many family trips to stay in touch with their numerous family and friends, which were spread across British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario.

Marlene enjoyed travelling and visited many places with her husband around the world. She became an active member of the Order of Eastern Star holding the title of Grand Treasurer for the province of Saskatchewan for a number of years. She performed visitations to nursing homes to deliver communion for many years and she also attended many RCMP Veteran’s association functions with her husband. Marlene’s legacy is one of unconditional deep, love and devotion to her husband and her children, her very cherished grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She made chosen family out of many of their friends, children’s friends and her caregivers. A Visitation will take place on Saturday, August 14, 2026 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral home in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn Saskatchewan with Pastor Victoria Mwamasika officiating. Interment at a later date at Hillcrest Cemetery, Columbarium, Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The family wishes to thank the nurses and doctors on Marlene’s medical team including those at Pasqua Palliative Care and the Allen Blair Clinic as well as her loving and wonderful care aides from All Ways Caring in Regina. Donations in memory of Marlene can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan and/or WeyStrong S.E. Sask. Cancer Support Group (11 Hartney Bay, Weyburn, SK S4H 0M1). Long-serving crop reporters are celebrated at event

The Government of Saskatchewan recognized long-serving volunteer crop reporters from throughout the province during the Saskatchewan Crop Reporter Appreciation Event in Saskatoon.

The event celebrated volunteers marking 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service providing seasonal, weekly observations and field reports that support Saskatchewan’s Crop Report program, and recognized them for their ongoing commitment in supporting Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector.

“The work our crop reporters do often happens behind the scenes, but it makes a real difference for producers across Saskatchewan,” Agriculture Minister David Marit said.

Saskatchewan’s Crop Report program is a trusted source of agricultural information, offering valuable insight into growing conditions across the province throughout the production season, according to Sask. Agriculture.

More than 200 volunteer crop reporters participate in the weekly report, representing agricultural regions throughout Saskatchewan. Their local knowledge and firsthand observations help deliver timely, accurate information on crop conditions, seeding and harvest progress, moisture levels and other key indicators that are relied upon by producers, industry stakeholders and the public.

“Being a crop reporter is far more than just reading a rain gauge; it comes with significant benefits and a real sense of purpose,” said Lyle Ehrman, volunteer crop reporter who received recognition for 45 years of service.

“I truly feel this program is a vital service globally. We are not just looking at our own backyards; we are providing the raw data that feeds into a much larger, worldwide picture of food security.”

The appreciation event provided an opportunity for Ministry of Agriculture representatives to recognize participants for their ongoing commitment and to celebrate the important role they play in supporting Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector.
