The song is available on Dreamcatcher Artists via ONErpm.

Arts wrote “The Right Drugs” with Allison Veltz Cruz and Alex Kline, the same trio who made history as the first all-female cast to write, produce and perform a number 1 country single with “Somebody Like That.”

“To me, the song feels like part two of my earlier release, ‘Unbecoming,’” said Arts.

“That song was about realizing I needed to change, unlearn certain patterns and let go of who I thought I was supposed to be. ‘The

NICKLE LAKE TO CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN IN THE PARK

Ghosts and goblins will be trick-or-treating around the campsites at Nickle Lake Regional Park on Saturday, August 15 for the annual Halloween in the Park.

Haunted crafts will be available at the Beavers Den from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A costume contest will also be held at the Beavers Den at 3 p.m. There will be many categories for prizes, such as scariest costume, best costume and most creative costume as a few examples.

Trick-or-treating will take place around the park from 4 to 8 p.m. A map of sites offering treats will be posted on Saturday afternoon and maps will be available for pickup from the office.

Park residents are encouraged to get their names on the list and get a balloon from the office to let trickor-treaters know they can come by for a treat.

There is a contest for campsite decorations and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places. The park office is accepting donations of prizes for the site judging, and for the costume judging.

The day will wind up with a movie in the park showing ‘Wicked’ at 8:45 p.m.

Hot, dry weather continues to advance crop development in the southeast, according to the crop report for the week of July two8 to August 3. Producers would welcome rain for later seeded crops and pastures.

Like much of the province, there were only a few scattered showers in a few areas in the region, providing very little precipitation.

A large part of the region did not receive any precipitation at all, impacting topsoil moisture in

the region.

Cropland topsoil moisture is: one per cent surplus; 60 per cent adequate; 38 per cent short; and one per cent very short.

Hayland topsoil moisture is: one per cent surplus; 53 per cent adequate; 44 per cent short; and two per cent very short.

Pasture topsoil moisture is: two per cent surplus; 46 per cent adequate; 47 per cent short; and five per cent very short.

Warm conditions have caused crop development to accelerate, offsetting earlier delays, with most crops reported to be at normal stage.

Crop development for this time of year in the region is rated as follows: • six per cent of fall cereals are reported as ahead, 89 per cent as normal and

five per cent behind.

• 10 per cent of spring cereals are reported as ahead, 76 per cent as normal and 14 per cent behind.

• eight per cent of oilseeds are reported as ahead, 74 per cent as normal and 18 per cent behind.

• 10 per cent of pulse crops are reported as ahead, 78 per cent as normal and 12 per cent behind.

• four per cent of perennial forage are reported as ahead, 90 per cent as normal and six per cent behind.

• Five per cent of annual forage are reported as ahead, 89 per cent as normal and six per cent behind.

Most crops are still developing and are not ready to harvest. However, a few cereal and early seeded pulse crops are reaching

maturity and starting to be harvested: two per cent of spring wheat; four per cent of oats; and two per cent of peas have been harvested.

While harvest has begun, less than one per cent of crops in the southeast have been harvested.

Livestock producers are noting that most pastures are in fair to good condition. Currently, one per cent of pastures are in excellent condition, 51 per cent are good, 32 per cent are fair, 14 per cent are poor and two per cent are in very poor condition.

Minor to moderate crop damage was reported in the region from hot temperatures and dry conditions, and gophers. Insect damage from aphids, bertha armyworms and grasshoppers were also reported in certain areas in the region.

Be farm safe: high-tech equipment requires routine reviews

Agriculture is routinely ranked among the most dangerous professions around the world.

Both the National Safety Council and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reported agriculture is one of the most hazardous industries. Farming operations continue to push forward with more mechanized and high-tech equipment that

requires routine reviews of safety protocols.

The agricultural sector recorded a fatal injury rate of approximately 18.6 deaths per 100,000 workers in 2023. Transportation incidents, notably tractor rollovers, remain the leading cause of death.

Furthermore, recent reports indicate that a child dies in an agriculture-related incident approximately

every three days, which underscores the need to prioritize farm safety across all age groups. Ensuring safe working conditions is vital within the agricultural sector. These guidelines can set the course for safer farming work.

Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS): The most effective lifesaver on a farm is ROPS. When combined

Chemicals and biological hazards High-potency pesticides and fertilizers create their own hazards on the farm. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is a must when working with chemicals. Most modern standards require proper ventilation, chemical-resistant gloves and dedicated eye protection to prevent acute poisoning and long-term health issues.

Hearing protection Exposure to the sounds of farm machinery and other equipment can result in tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and eventual hearing loss unless hearing protection is worn regularly.

Fatigue and mental health Mental and physical fatigue of farm workers can result in injury as well. A critical trend uncovered in recent agricultural safety research ultimately led researchers to conclude that “fatigue management” needs to be prioritized.

Reasons to remove cull animals One might think an ani­ mal is culled only when it has a dis­ease that threatens the entire herd. Howev­er, the truth is that some cull animals can be removed from the herd and used for other purposes.

Cull animals may be too old for breeding or, in the case of racehorses for example, for competition.

Once the animal reaches a certain age, it’s susceptible to var­ious health problems,

such as lameness, infertility, mastitis or arthritis, and is more prone to injury in gen­ eral. In the case of poultry or dairy breeds, the animal may no longer be able to produce eggs or milk.

Dairy cows or breed­ ing sows, for example, are gen­erally sold at auction and then taken to a slaugh­ terhouse to be processed into ground meat, sausages, bacon and other meat prod­ ucts. These carcasses are

also valued for their hides.

Even their bones may be processed into meal to be used in animal feed.

Laying hens may also be sold for their meat. Some­ times they may be adopted by fam­ilies, as their lower egg production is sufficient to meet the needs of a sin­ gle household.

It’s helpful to under­ stand these practices to ap­ preciate the roles animals play through­out their lives.

Ryan Young SaskToday.ca The Executive Direc­ tor of the Do More Agri­ culture Foundation, Merle Massie, had conversations with farmers about mental health in agriculture, a topic she that is getting a little bit easier to talk about.

“Yeah, they are. What we do know, though, is that there’s still, there remains a lot of stigma.” Massie said, noting one conversation she had with someone who said their husband decided to take a week off from farm­ ing, but didn’t want to men­ tion it to family members.

“And she said, well, just tell your sisters that, you know, you’re going to take

a week off for your mental health. He’s like, I’m not mental, right? I’m not going to say that because I’m not mental.” Massie recalled.

She said taking a break and doing something fun on your farm is really import­ ant for one’s mental health.

Massie promoted Do More Ag’s podcast called “Hey, are we okay?” at Ag in Motion. Launched in October of 2025, the podcast profiles what com­ munities are doing to raise the profile of mental health in their community.

Part of the podcast in­ cludes a segment called “Fun on the Farm”. As the name suggests, it encour­ ages people to submit a

voice note to Do More Ag on what they do for fun while on the farm.

She cited one example of farm kids using pasture land as a dirt bike trail.

“He was telling me all about it. And I said, so what do the cows think of that, you know, in the pas­ ture? Well, sometimes they wreck it. But I have to go and fix it. But it was hilari­ ous. It was a great story.”

There are eight episodes in total for season one with season two of the podcast to premiere in September, she said. “We’ve already got a number of great epi­ sodes in the can, and we’re so looking forward to shar­ ing those stories.”

Farmers’ mental health is important

When managed thoughtfully, farmland can offer shelter, food and safe breeding areas for a wide range of species. Here are four practical ways farmers help wildlife flourish.

Protecting wetlands Ponds, streams and wet­ lands are some of the busi­ est places on a farm when it comes to wildlife. Farm­ ers often leave buffer zones of grasses or plants around these areas to keep them clean and undisturbed. This helps protect species like

Using wildlife-friendly farming practices Farmers who use prac­ tices such as rotating live­ stock between pastures, leaving crop residue after harvest and planting cover crops create better condi­ tions for wildlife.

Wildlife does more than simply coexist with farm ac­ tivity; it plays an active role in a farm’s well-being. The presence of birds, insects and other animals helps cre­ ate a more balanced and re­ silient ecosystem.

Police repond to mischief, assault

The Weyburn Police Service responded to 104 calls for service during the week of August 2–9, 2026.

Notable Incidents Mischief: Police received a report of mischief to the caboose located outside the Soo Line Historical Museum. Several windows were smashed, and the door was damaged after someone attempted to kick it in. The investigation is ongoing.

Cause a Disturbance: Police were called to a local drinking establishment on August 8 regarding a customer who refused to leave when asked. An adult male initially cooperated with police and was taken home by friends. The male later returned to the establishment, and police were called back. He was arrested and lodged in cells until sober. The male also received a $250 ticket for re-entering a drinking establishment after being directed to leave.

Breach of Release Order: Police were called to a domestic disturbance at a

residence in Weyburn on August 3. Upon arrival, officers found that both parties had calmed down. Further investigation determined that the adult male had an outstanding warrant from the Regina Police Service and was also subject to conditions prohibiting him from having contact with the adult female. The male was arrested, charged accordingly, and later released on conditions.

Assault: Police received a complaint regarding a female youth who had been assaulted by another female youth. The investigation determined that one youth attacked the other without warning, causing minor injuries. The accused youth was charged accordingly and released on conditions, including having no contact with the victim.

Break and Enter/Assault: Police received a complaint on August 4 that a male had entered another male’s residence uninvited and assaulted him. The investigation determined that the victim in this incident had allegedly assaulted the other male the previous week and that the subsequent incident was believed to be retaliatory. One male was charged with break and enter to commit assault, while the other male was charged with assault. Both were released on conditions prohibiting contact with one another.

Mental Health/Well-Being Calls: Police responded to 26 calls for assistance involving mental health or well-being concerns during the week.

Norm Park/ SaskToday.ca About two weeks ago I heard the current president of the United States declare that he wasn’t too interested in updating the U.S.-Canada-Mexico trade agreement. I think they refer to it now as USMCA. It used to be the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). But, of course, Donnie Deflector needed a new name. Now, it seems he’s not interested in the agreement at all and is eager to let it die.

According to Deflector, the U.S. doesn’t need Canada or Mexico in his new world order, especially Canada. In his estimation, Canada really needs the U.S., and the U.S. can do just fine without Canada. And he definitely didn’t like the idea of Canada gaining economic advantages with the trade agreements.

So with that in mind, if Canada was doing just fine with the deal then maybe Donnie had it backward? Maybe what Canada was giving his country was just as important as what they were giving us?

So I started thinking, and that’s difficult for me due to my limited resources.

But I figured I should give it a try.

So what about this self-sufficiency game that Deflector is trying to set up?

Yes, Canada is definitely not spending enough on military defences. We have been relying too much on the Americans and it showed. But we are now in the process of correcting that particular problem while the U.S. is shredding their defence systems by demanding way more money for fading defensive practices to support suspect leadership. They got talked into more than a couple of fruitless military adventures that are costing them billions of dollars, time, equipment, weapons and personnel.

So where else do we look?

What can the U.S. give us we don’t already have?

Let’s see. We have lots of oil, gas, coal, rare earth minerals and uranium that we already know how to enrich to build power plants, not bombs.

We can build our own vehicles if need be. We have talent in that file, including EVs since the U.S. is no longer that interested in them. If the U.S. doesn’t want to partner with us, then we have folks in Oshawa, Windsor et al, who know how to do that and we can continue a partnership with Mexico for assembly and parts exchanges. We have steel and aluminum and all the other materials and heck, we once built cars in Regina, so what’s the big deal? We also made a deal with China to bring in 49,000 of their state-of-art EVs that put Tesla to shame.

We would have to do a little homework for rebuilding, but Canadians are used to that.

We have ship building facilities and we also build airplanes.

On the educational front, we remain well ahead of the U.S. and we welcome international students on a controlled immigration plan that won’t get out of hand.

We definitely have a superior healthcare system, and although ours needs some serious tweaking, it’s still much

better than what the Americans have to go through to get decent care without health insurance companies and government playing vicious games with victims.

We can produce our own beer, liquor and wine, thank you.

And yes, we still have friends in low places (apologies to Garth Brooks, couldn’t resist). I mean we can call on all kinds of friendly allies from smaller regions and countries, so what I’m referring to here is not necessarily “low” places, but rather, smaller regions with materials, equipment, people and investments that they would love to share with us because they know that for the most part, Canada plays fair.

We have access to A.I. and chips, either at home or easily available from friendly sources.

We have decent working conditions with minimum wage rules and, as noted in a previous column, Canadians and those who work with us, get such things as paid vacations, minimum wage laws and maternity leaves and our Canada Pension Plan and Old-Age Security systems help us ease into retirement mode.

The U.S. doesn’t have that, except for their Social Security program.

Yes, we have drug problems and housing issues for a portion of our population but most of those issues are self-inflicted.

The victims are aided with social support and security structures that are pretty solid. America has that huge problem too aided only by a reluctant government.

We have two basic policing systems that work within principled agencies whereas the U.S. has about 50 different agencies and each of them seems to have their own agendas and often hapless training and deployment issues (hello there ICE).

Canada has somewhat disciplined provincial and federal governments and political parties that prefer to play by the rules and don’t need to engage in unlimited fundraising efforts and campaigns. We don’t have time for those shenanigans.

Our politicians have more important things to do than spending 70 per cent of their time trying to raise funds to spend on endless campaigns trying to get reelected.

So what if the U.S. beat Canada at our own game in the last Olympics! They have 340 million people to draw talent from and we have 41 million, so of course they’ll take advantage of the situation. We just have to remind them of who taught them how to play that game?

Now let’s not get too overboard here my fellow Canadians. I’m thinking we still like our American friends and we do share a border, so it’s just the crazy politicians and their acolytes that appear to be drawing them away … hopefully only temporarily.

We should keep reaching out to enjoy shared experiences, while keeping in mind that perhaps Canada is more self sufficient than we originally thought.

And please note, I didn’t even mention guns, school shootings or Las Vegas.

But thanks for the challenge Mr. Deflector. We needed it.

Beginning this fall, Weyburn Soccer will take the field under a new name and one powerful identity: Prairie Fire FC. “Over the years, our organization has used different names for different programs, Weyburn Soccer, the Devils and the Celtics. Moving forward as Prairie Fire FC brings everything together under one clear identity, similar to other local sports organizations such as the Wings and Beavers. It gives our players, coaches, families and community one club and one name to stand behind,” said technical director Tyler Hillstead.

“This change is about building a stronger culture and creating pride and belonging for everyone, from a child playing for the first time to a player pursuing the performance pathway. We’re also proud of the past 50 years and the generations of volunteers, coaches, players and families who built the strong foundation we have today.

Prairie Fire FC carries that history forward while giving us a clear identity and direction for the future,”

added Hillstead.

According to a recent Facebook post, the Prairie Fire FC will be building one connected club with four clear programs: Foundations - where the fire begins, Club - where every player can grow and belong, Performance - where committed players compete and push themselves, and Academy - where players receive additional focused development.

It was also noted that moving forward every player will wear the same crest, every coach will work toward the same purpose and every family will belong to one club.

“We want to create a culture where players are known, supported and challenged. A culture built on effort, character, accountability and pride. A place where players can receive quality coaching, pursue their ambitions and continue developing close to home.”

Indoor registration is now open. Families are encouraged to get ready to find a program and become part of the Prairie Fire FC family.

SE baseball players selected for U15 team

David Willberg SaskToday.ca The Southeast U15 AAA Twins will be well represented with the Sask Selects baseball team.

Tayson Tangjerd of Estevan, Corbin Beck of Carnduff and Sawyer Treble of Weyburn were chosen to play on the club, while Blair Beck of Carnduff will be the head coach and Trent Dorrance of Alameda will be an assistant coach.

Tangjerd is coming off a season in which he was named the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League’s 15U AAA pitcher of the year. He went 7-2, allowed 17 hits in 49 innings and struck out 117 batters. With only eight earned runs allowed, he finished with an earned-run average of 1.143.

At the plate, he batted .386 with 54 hits in 140 at bats, with six home runs, 31 runs batted in, 51 runs, and 21 stolen bases.

Corbin Beck went 43 of 120 for a .358 batting average, with seven home runs, 37 runs, 43 runs batted in and 13 stolen bases. On the mound, he went 5-6 with

53 strikeouts.

Treble had 59 hits in 138 at bats for a .428 batting average, with nine home runs, 47 runs, 47 runs batted in and 22 stolen bases.

The Twins won the silver medal at provincials this year.

Team Saskatchewan will compete at the 2026 Ray Carter Cup, taking place from Aug. 20-23 in Summerside, P.E.I. “This prestigious tournament brings together the top 15U baseball players from across Canada, providing an incredible opportunity to compete against the nation’s best while proudly representing Saskatchewan on the national stage,” stated a post on the Twins’ Facebook page.

“Your dedication, hard work, and commitment to the game have earned you this opportunity, and the entire Southeast Twins family couldn’t be prouder. We can’t wait to cheer you on as you wear the green and gold with pride.

“Best of luck, boys - represent Saskatchewan and the Southeast Twins with the passion and character you’ve shown all season.”

Sometimes it’s easy to take for granted what you have in your own backyard.

After all, you’re so used to seeing it, you just always expect that it will always be there – but it can also become easy to miss.

Some attractions are a community’s “best-kept secret”, as they are things everybody should know about but don’t, when it should be a pretty big deal.

This is not just a phenomenon in Weyburn, nor is it a Saskatchewan thing. People in all communities don’t give themselves enough credit for having all sorts of things others would genuinely like to see or experience.

Sometimes here in Weyburn, we seem to forget how much we have going for us.

A note for the rest of the country: there are a lot more attractions and activities to do than just work and stare at endlessly flat spaces. Those flat, wide-open spaces yield some of the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets on the planet in the “Land of the Living Skies”, along with a lot of rolling hills and valleys for us to enjoy.

Take a look at Weyburn and the surrounding area. You’ll find all sorts of great things to do in all directions.

Head southeast of Weyburn and you’ll find Nickle Lake Regional Park, one of the best regional parks in the province.

It’s beautiful and well-maintained, with terrific campsites, along with a beach, boat docks, a new paddling pool and mini-golf to enjoy.

Go further southeast, you’ll find Mainprize Regional Park

on the Rafferty Dam, with its boat launch, beach and golf course.

Nearer the city you can take in the Weyburn Golf Course, a beautiful 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, with a practice putting green and driving range.

Life is just as much fun when you come into the city.

The Weyburn Leisure Centre is home to the city’s outdoor swimming pool next door along with the Credit Union Spark Centre.

In addition, Weyburn has two spray park facilities, at River Park and at the Young Fellows/Don Mitchell Tot Lot, including a paddling pool and playground at the latter location.

The Tatagwa Parkway trail system offers trails all around the city, connecting with the picturesque River Park and campground, which features disc golf and a gazebo, and a kayak/canoe launch onto the Souris River.

Another park area is Jubilee Park, which has pathways along with ball diamonds for minor ball and softball teams, and sports fields for soccer and lacrosse.

You can go for a meal at one of our great restaurants, some of which have patios to enjoy on warm summer evenings. If you’re from out of town, you might want to spend overnight at one of the city’s hotels or motels, and visit one of the shopping areas the following day.

Weyburn is blessed with a number of cultural experiences as well that will allow you to further your artistic skills, or admire the abilities of others.

SaskToday Saskatchewan RCMP’s Central District General Investigation Section is warning the public, particularly businesses in the heavy-duty trucking and transportation sector, about a large-scale fraud involving the purchase of truck tires and other equipment using fraudulent credit cards.

Police say fraudsters are placing orders over the phone and paying with stolen or fraudulently obtained credit card information, leaving businesses vulnerable to significant financial losses.

The RCMP is urging retailers and suppliers to remain vigilant and report suspicious transactions.

In March 2026, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Central District GIS launched an investigation into a series of fraud-related occurrences throughout the province. The businesses that are impacted are generally operating in the supply of heavy-duty trucking and transportation services – including, but not limited to,

automotive suppliers, tire shops, and fuel distributors. Investigation determined that these businesses received phone calls from individuals interested in purchasing tires, engine oil, and/or trailer parts.

The caller would provide credit card information over the phone, with the transaction showing to be approved and pending.

Businesses would then ship the materials by a courier. After the items were shipped, the credit card would be declined, and no payment would be received.

Investigators have determined that 12 local businesses within Saskatchewan’s heavy-duty trucking and transportation sector have been impacted by this fraud. These businesses are located in the following communities: Battleford, Weyburn, Hudson Bay, Kindersley, Biggar, Assiniboia, White Butte, Moosomin, Cudworth and Onion Lake.

No charges have been laid in connection with this investigation yet; however, RCMP say they are sharing

this information to help prevent further victimization.

Investigators believe additional businesses have been targeted and are encouraging those who’ve received an order under suspicious circumstances, regardless of whether it resulted in a financial or material loss, to report it to police.

The investigation extends across provincial borders, with other related incidents having been identified throughout Western Canada. Central District GIS continues its investigation and is collaborating with other police jurisdictions to advance the investigation.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of a crime of this nature is asked to report it to their local RCMP detachment by calling 310-RCMP (if residing in Saskatchewan) or their police service immediately.

Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Sask. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com.

Although victims identified in this fraud are primarily from the heavy-duty trucking and transportation sector, businesses in other sectors may also be targeted and should familiarize themselves with the characteristics of this type of fraudulent activity.

The Saskatchewan RCMP encourages the public and businesses to exercise caution and consider the following safety tips when a caller requests to make a purchase over the phone: • Be cautious of orders where the first payment card is declined. Fraudsters often attempt to complete purchases using multiple cards after an initial card is rejected.

• Never rely solely on caller ID and verify the callers’ identity before processing any payment information.

• Be alert to rushed or unusual requests.

• If a transaction appears suspicious, do not proceed until it has been verified.

• Report suspected fraud to police immediately.

Weyburn Legion recognizes volunteers at annual awards night

Legion members and supporters gathered to receive certificates or service pins for their continuous support and contributions to this branch and our community while enjoying an evening celebration.

A Certificate of Merit

was presented to Royal Canadian Legion Weyburn Branch Vice President Jerry Ponto.

Humane Society nears 200-brick goal for new animal shelter

SaskToday The Weyburn Humane Society’s “Brick by Brick” campaign has sold over 190 engraved bricks, thanks to generous community donors.

With a goal of 200 bricks, the public can still participate by visiting the website or responding to their social media posts. Each $100 brick allows for 30 characters of personalized text.

The new shelter, located at 1810 East Avenue, will have a dog run building, 4,200 square feet (50 feet wide by 84 feet long), which will accommodate 16 dogs

in separate kennels. This building will be an unheated outdoor space for nicer days.

There will be a 4,300 square feet (86 feet wide by 50 feet long) building, separate from the dog run building. It will include indoor dog kennels, a dog wash area, cat rooms with a playroom, storage, laundry, two washrooms, administration, a meeting room and a garage. There will also be a space for outdoor cat runs.

The shelter’s design prioritizes animal health, sustainability and a welcoming experience for adopters and visitors.

Kathryn Groshong volunteered in the school house at Heritage Village and played a few songs on the piano. Kathryn had taught in a one-class schoolhouse when she was younger.
