Crops developing well

Haying continues in much of the province despite limited plant growth due to the shortfall in precipitation.

Livestock producers now have 24 per cent of the hay crop cut and 15 per cent baled or put into silage, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture's weekly Crop Report.

Hay quality is currently rated as four per cent excellent, 43 per cent good, 34 per cent fair and 19 per cent poor. Many hay swaths are significantly smaller than normal and producers are concerned that hay will be in short supply this year as pasture conditions continue to deteriorate from the lack of rainfall.

The Ministry of Agriculture has a Forage, Feed and Custom Service listing for producers to advertise and source feed products. It is available at www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/ FeedForageListing.

Rainfall this past week ranged from trace amounts to nearly two inches in westcentral areas. However, precipitation was spotty and most areas received either no rain or just light showers averaging a third of an inch.

As a result, topsoil remains dry. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 33 per cent adequate, 45 per cent short and 22 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 23 per cent adequate, 41 per cent short and 36 per cent very short.

Crops are developing well in most of the province, although many crops in drier areas are short, thin and heading out and/or flowering earlier than normal. Sixty-seven per cent of the fall cereals and 39 per cent spring cereals are in the heading stage, with an additional 31 per cent of the fall cereals in the dough stage.

Forty-five per cent of flax, 55 per cent of canola and mustard, and 82 per cent of pulse crops are in the flower to boll/pod stage.

Crop conditions vary throughout the province with the majority of crops in poor to good condition. Grasshoppers and lack of moisture remain significant causes of reported crop damage.

Farmers are busy controlling pests and cutting hay.

Local construction sites inspected Reg Welsh, a patroller for the Sask 1st Call program, was in Weyburn on July 6, inspecting and ensuring local construction sites and residential build sites are undergoing safe digging practices. The Sask 1st Call program began in 2014 as a service for anyone planning to dig or excavate. The service provides underground facility screening and notification for safe excavation. The mobile unit makes both unannounced and appointment booked stops at commercial and residential sites.

"Our goal is to get everyone to call Sask 1st Call before breaking ground and encourage safe digging practices which will help prevent damage to underground facilities.In turn that helps prevent costly repairs, damage to equipment and surrounding areas, and most importantly prevents personal injury or loss of life states Welsh.

Welsh is just one of the patrollers in the Sask 1st Call program that will be driving around this summer in areas including but not limited to Weyburn, Estevan, Regina, Moose Jaw, Melville, Balgonie, White City, Assiniboia and Gravelborg.

A vacation in Saskatchewan

Looking back to move ahead

By Helen Waller I recently had family from British Columbia pay a visit to Saskatchewan. To be completely honest, I was a little worried before they even got here. What were two teenage boys, who have travelled all over the world, going to find in Saskatchewan to keep them entertained? Yet, as they headed home, back to the city, it was clear Saskatchewan had a few surprises up its' sleeve that left them saying "We can't wait to come back."

Here are a few great things that should be included in the Tourism Saskatchewan brochure.

1. Rider Pride: No matter what sport you watch, what big stadium you sit in, there is nothing quite like a Rider fan.

(Well, there's nothing quite like watching a Rider fan in action.) Whether it be a watermelon on their head or hair painted green, a Rider fan is second to none when it comes to passion for the game.

2. Land of the Living Skies: It's something that a lot of us take for granted. In big cities where the sky scrapers are side by side, people don't get to see the beautiful sunsets and sunrises. In Saskatche-wan, we can see our dog run away from home for days but we also get to see the ever-changing and beautiful landscapes in the sky.

3. Food: Two words, perogies and cabbage rolls. You can hit any Five Star restaurant and it will still not compare to grandma's (or baba's) homemade, home-cooked, perogies and cabbage rolls.

4. A Farmer's Field: I think that this time of year is one of the most beautiful in Saskatchewan. Fields of flax and canola are blooming everywhere you look. Imagine coming from the city where the biggest crop you have ever seen is your mom's garden and now you are surrounded on both sides of the road with gorgeous crops of canola.

5. Lack of WiFi: Now at first, this may not sound like a bonus of being on vacation.

Having no service at the farm means no Instagram posts or Snapchat stories. Yet, there is something to be said about enjoying the moment, rather than worrying about posting it.

6. Freedom: There may be only five streets to walk down in this town but all of them are safe. Kids are free to bike around town for hours. In fact, you don't even have to worry about where they are because on a quiet night in town, you can hear exactly where they are.

7. Life is a Highway: No more traffic jams. The only things you need to worry about on our highways are a family of ducks, a fox or a deer crossing the road.

So it seems Saskatchewan surprised the city folk. It's a great vacation destination spot after all.

Whether or not it's about wandering in some back country wilderness or having made an unwise decision, losing one's sense of direction is a dilemma that we all face.

Go back? Forward? What's the right direction?

My dear friend, Susan, historian and author, sparked my thoughts about these questions while reading the latest contribution to her blog, "My year of living backwards". If it wasn't for the fact

Unless the forecast prove right later this week, this seems like a page taken from the writings of 1 Kings 17 - 19 from the experience of the prophet Elijah who lived the three year drought in Israel during the reign of King Ahab whose wife Jezebel seem to hold power and determined what happened in the land. While some might be impacted by breathing difficulties and issues because of the smoke making their way to southern Saskatchewan, it must be quite another matter to be caught with having to evacuate from your home and community because the fires are getting too close and too dangerous to remain there. It must be frustrating and disappointing to witness the potential loss of everything one has worked to build up over the years and to face the prospect of starting over.

Even the faith response of trusting in God in the face of this situation must be very testing and trying for those families and persons, because there must be a sinking sense of this difficulty being overwhelming. This situation is made more acute when we realize that these fires in northern Saskatchewan are not restricted to our provincial boundaries but also true of our western provinces. Whenever we hear of disasters affecting people living in other parts of the world, we generally mobilize our resources to help them to rebuild their lives. I am now wondering if the time has not come for us to start a similar fundraising effort to help our northern neighbors with the task of rebuilding their infrastructures and homes when the time comes. Certainly commendable are those helping with fire-fighting and with accommodating those who have been displaced and evacuated from their homes and communities, but much more will be needed in the weeks ahead.

In the meantime, we pray for much needed rain to help put those fires out or at least to slow down their advancement into wider areas, but also to help our crops come to greater maturity and yield for our farming families. Our inability to affect or control our weather helps to realize just how dependent upon God we are in this situation and many others; yet we try to go it alone until the situation is almost desperate before we engage in some serious prayers. When we pray, we acknowledge just how much we need God and that we should turn to Him more often and more readily every day of our lives. We pray that God may bring those fires under control and put them out, so that stability might return to northern Saskatchewan.

I can't think of a better spiritual GPS system than to remember the times we've been spared the results of our own foolishness and to recall God's goodness to us even when we've been less than gracious to someone else.

Mid-July Reflections: Haze, Smoke and No Rain

that I know her to be one of the most talented, creative people I know, I might have questioned her choice of words.

Living backwards. Isn't that what we're not supposed to do? Doesn't present, let alone future success, hinge on moving forward in spite of the past? As I've mused on the topic several seemingly contradictory Scripture passages come to mind. In the first, Philippians 3:13, the Apostle Paul talks about forgetting the former things so that our past doesn't hinder experiencing all that God has for us each coming day. Forget the things that hinder our progress!

Weyburn General Hospital Palliative Care room receives makeover The Palliative Care room at the Weyburn General Hospital has received a makeover.

Upon touring one of the palliative care rooms, the Weyburn Cancer Survivor Support Group for Women decided that they would commit to redoing one of the rooms.

The Weyburn Cancer Survivor Support Group for Women (Sharing the Journey) current facilitators are Sharon Werstuik, Linda Unrau, Tanis VanDeSype, Tammie Morrison and Vickie Betker. Meetings are every second Wednesday of the month at the Weyburn Public Library.

Women are encouraged to come share and receive support for their Journey as cancer survivors. email : sharingthejourney@sasktel.net “The rooms at the Weyburn General Hospital have not been updated for quite some time and although the community looks forward to having a new hospital in the future, in the meantime, many patients will travel through our existing hospital. Our group decided to coordinate and donate the refinishing of one of the palliative care rooms”, said Werstuik. “Our group partnered with Simple with a Twist to achieve the makeover.”

Local photographer, Tina Hudson, donated two beautiful photographs of local landscapes to adorn the walls and Weyburn Canadian Tire, Microtel Hotel, Dempsey Laird Trucking Ltd., Weyburn Public Library (Dress Down for Charity) generously donated many of the accessories with the remainder of the items purchased by the Weyburn Cancer Survivor Support Group for Women. Simple with a Twist chose the color palette, shopped and installed the items.

“We felt it was important for the patients and their families to have a nicer environment to be in, at a sacred time of closure. We hope our intension to bring comfort is felt by those that spend time in this room”, stated Heather van der Breggen of Simple with a Twist.

The fresh new look was completed on July 14.

(306) 897-7499 • www.pursuitsc.com What ... Is ... Going ... On? The once mighty Saskatchewan Roughriders are the only winless team in the CFL following Friday night's 35-32 overtime loss at the B.C. Lions. The Riders are 0-3 and falling behind the pack.

The last time the Roughriders were 0-3, Stephen Harper was the Prime Minister of Canada and Barack Obama was President of the United States!

What's that you say? Oh, so it hasn't been that long.

It was 2011 in fact, when the Greg Marshall-led Roughriders stumbled to a 1-7 mark leading to Ken Miller taking over the coaching reins just prior to Labour Day. The club would finish 5-13.

The 2011 season was considered to be a blip on the screen.

A misnomer. As it turned out, the hierarchy was right because Corey Chamblin was brought in as head coach in 2012 and the club has pretty much improved every year since.

Until now. Time will tell whether this rocky start in 2015 is just another blip, or the start of a monumental franchise slide. Hey, the good times can't last forever.

And Chamblin is getting tarred and feathered by a good chunk of the fickle Rider Nation these days, as he's become the face of the organization. He's made so many moves with players and coaches that it's crystal clear the buck stops with him.

In 2013 he got the Grey Cup, the Coach of the Year Award and a fat, long, new contract.

Now, he's facing the firing squad. Although any suggestion his job is on the line is ludicrous.

But it seems like this year is moving so fast, it's like a blur.

I'm sure the Riders would love to throw a challenge flag on the season just to have a moment to collect their thoughts.

But they can't.

What am I talking about? Well here's how they got here: Saskatchewan has held fourth quarter leads in all three of its games only to watch them dwindle into losses each gutwrenching time.

Friday's extra-time loss at B.C. Lions was utterly flabbergasting and very likely left an emotional wound.

Saskatchewan had an 11-point lead with 2:15 to go! Just play some defense and let's get out of here.

Not so fast. The game came down to two 3rd-and-1situations which sealed the Riders' fate. On the first with less than a minute to go and the Riders leading 29-26, Saskatchewan turned the ball over on downs at their own 48-yard line when quarterback Brett Smith couldn't convert on a sneak. The Lions took over and kicked a 56-yard field goal to tie the game and send it to overtime.

The Riders faced the same scenario in overtime at the B.C. 26-yard line and given the fact Chamblin couldn't trust his offense to convert just moments earlier, he elected to have Paul McCallum kick a 33-yard field goal. After that, all B.C. had to do was score a touchdown to win. They accomplished that feat alarmingly easily with a four-yard Emmanual Arceneaux touchdown reception to send the 23,062 in attendance into a frenzy.

The Riders fell to 0-3 and were appropriately shocked, stunned and bewildered. I'm told you could hear a pin drop in the locker room for quite a period of time afterwards.

Who's to blame? The players backed - but failed to execute - the first third down gamble.

Aggressive playcalls show confidence in your team. Better tackling would've cinched these victories in all three games, long before it came down to the final minutes or seconds.

You can scratch your head and point as many fingers as you'd like but all roads eventually lead back to Chamblin.

Now it's up to the head coach to keep this locomotive on the tracks before they fall any further behind and their blossoming confidence is obliterated.

"We gotta find a way. Everybody else is," Chamblin fumed on CKRM's postgame show. "Clean football is what we have to play. Whether we call a three-, four-, or five-man rush, we just have to find a way to get off the field."

The loss wasted a superb outing for star Rider receiver Weston Dressler (9 catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns), who says they need to reach rock bottom soon before they can start climbing again.

"I think the biggest thing right now for us is recognizing the pain," Dressler said in a silent locker room after the game. "It should hurt. We should have guys in the locker room that care about winning football games. I'd be worried if guys weren't quiet in there and weren't hurting."

So again the Roughriders will try for their first win this Friday when they host those same B.C. Lions at Mosaic Stadium (8:00 pm, TSN, CKRM) in Week 4.

Man these games are coming so fast.

Trudy Morken and her dog, Rocky, were two attendees at the Bark in the Park event held at Tom Laing Park on July 12. Melanie Adderley, the owner of the Weyburn Pet Valu, organized the event in conjunction with the Weyburn Beavers baseball team. Both the Prairie Sky Dog Rescue and the Weyburn Humane Society sent representatives to the event, which helped raised awareness and funds for both non-profit organizations. Fans were encouraged to bring along their pets for the afternoon and watch the Beavers baseball double header. The Weyburn Pet Valu store has been busy with events including their fundraising efforts to aid animals which have been displaced due to the Saskatchewan wildfires. So far, they have donated 1,162 pounds of dog food, 180 pounds of cat litter and 165 pounds of cat food, along with numerous items including treats, collars, leashes and harnesses.

The Sask. Senior Fitness Association (SSFA), Southeast Connection District Committee, is providing an opportunity for individuals to express their thoughts in a short story and/or poetry in the District competition.

Southeast Connection residents, 50 years and over, can put into words their thoughts using the theme, “Living Life with Vitality”.

You may submit one entry typed double-speced for each: one unpublished

poem 12 to 24 lines and/or unpublished short story of 350 to 500 words per competitor are invited. The deadline is September 15, 2015.
