Trimmed With Best Wishes Wishing our wonderful community and surrounding area a safe and healthy holiday season. Happy Holidays from Prince of Wales Cultural & Recreation Centre Management, Staff and Board
Dear Santa Every year you get 1,000’s of letters asking for what is wanted. I am writing this letter for what is needed, not just for me, but for our world. Our world needs leadership and you seem like the guy who can do it. You are the one person everyone looks to for hope. The guy that can bring smiles in some of the lives that could really use one. The leader that takes charge for a job that most adults believe is impossible, and you make it possible. You have people believing in you when science, reason and sanity say they shouldn’t. You create more magic in one season than 1,000 leaders do in a whole year. You incite more smiles in people of all ages than anyone else we know. You may dress silly but that red suit makes more hearts happy than a billion dollars could. Your simple gestures of love and giving are exactly what our world needs right now. A person who leads by example not by dominance or fancy speeches or mega money. Everyone in the world needs something to believe in, something to hope for and someone to love them and you, fine gentlemen, are exactly that person. I’m asking you to teach the gift of your kindness, giving spirit and love to the people of this world. Teach the world your work ethic without need of accolades, celebrity status or massive amounts of money. Santa, you know what they say – “the speed of the leader, is the speed of the group.” With love, admiration and hopefulness, Sherri

Expert tips for making your first yule log cake Want to try baking a traditional yule log cake this year? Use these tried-and-true tips to ensure your success. Bake For a classic yule log, use a light sponge cake made with flour, sugar and whole eggs. Beat the eggs until they triple in volume. Look for a reliable recipe online and bake the sponge cake on a parchmentlined baking sheet. Roll There are several schools of thought on how to roll a yule log cake. Here’s a time-tested method. 1. Remove the sponge cake from the mould as soon as it comes out of the oven. Use a knife if necessary. 2. Place a sheet of parchment paper slightly larger than the cake on your work surface. 3. Turn the baking sheet upside down to place the sponge cake on the parchment paper. Then, immediately (and gently) peel away the paper used during baking. 4. Roll the cake up using the parchment paper underneath. 5. Cover the dessert with a damp dish towel and let it cool. That’s it! The hardest part is done. Fill Unroll the cooled cake and spread it with your filling of choice, such as ganache, whipped cream or jam. Use the parchment paper again to roll the cake back up. The previous steps will have made it pliable and moist. For the finishing touch, some people prefer to cover the log completely with icing; others dust it with a little bit of icing sugar or chocolate shavings. At this stage, let your imagination run wild. Are you missing any ingredients or utensils to make your yule log a success? Visit your local shops to get equipped like the pros.

Activity ideas to bring the magic of Christmas to life for a child
Christmas is just around the corner! Do you have a child or grandchild you’d like to share the magic of Christmas with? These 12 activities are sure to bring out the festive spirit of this much-anticipated holiday. Read a book: Curl up near the Christmas tree, wrap yourself in a cozy blanket and dive into a captivating Christmas story. Borrow books from your neighbourhood library or buy them at your local bookstore. Listen to music: Play Christmas music as you do other fun activities like drawing or doing puzzles. Learn the lyrics by heart or even sing along to a karaoke version. Watch a movie: Choose a funny or heart-warming Christmas movie to watch
at home or in the theatre. If you want to get even more in the spirit, wear a cozy toque or your favourite Christmas pajamas. Admire festive decorations: Once the sun sets, take a walk or drive around your neighbourhood to look at the most beautifully decorated houses. You’re sure to be amazed! Write to Santa Claus: Help your child write a letter to Santa. Give them nice paper and stickers for decorating, then drop off the letter together at the post office or a mailbox. Prepare Elf on the Shelf pranks: Invite a mischievous elf to your home to pull off all kinds of pranks that your child will discover when they wake up.
Send holiday cards: Help your child write Christmas cards to their friends, cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. Deliver them by hand if possible. Visit a Christmas market: These community events have a bit of everything, from music and entertainment to colourful decorations. You’re sure to get in the holiday spirit! Bake cookies: Make delicious treats like shortbread or gingerbread men and decorate them together. Enjoy some as a family and share the rest as gifts. Decorate the house: Set up the Christmas tree and hang stockings. If you’re feeling crafty, make ornaments, wreaths and garlands to beautify your space. Don’t for-
get to place Christmas figurines or stuffed animals in your child’s room. Buy an advent calendar: Children love advent calendars, which help them count down the days until Christmas. Whether filled with chocolates or surprises like stickers and small toys, they’re always a hit. Prepare a snack for Santa Claus: On December 24, help your child prepare a snack for the Jolly Old Saint Nick. You can also put out some raw vegetables for the reindeer. The southwest region has everything you need to bring the magic of Christmas to life for people of all ages. Make the most of these memorable moments together!

Building Bonds: RCMP continues making community connections
Sherri Solomko / Freelance Reporter Christine Poirier, DSA the for Assiniboia RCMP Detachment told the Assiniboia Times, “In November we held a parent information night about the importance of teaching children about sexual consent. We had two guest speakers, one from Moose Jaw Family Services and one from the RCMP Community Outreach program. There was a small turnout that night but if anyone has any questions, feel free to stop by the detachment, as we have some pamphlets that were handed out that night.” Cpl. Lisoway led the winter lights in parade in town on December 3. Cst. Madderrom, from the Coronach Detachment attended the Kinette Santa
breakfast, creating a little fun and community engagement at these events. Poirier added, “December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and we have several initiatives planned throughout the month.” One of the highlights of the year recounted to the Assiniboia Times came from Cst. Sirianni, who mentioned that her most memorable day was when the big rainstorm hit town in July and she went
around with her big rain boots and assisted people who had become stuck in puddles. She loves being outside in the elements and even though she was in uniform, she doesn’t consider doing those sorts of things as work, she just enjoys doing them. Poirier acknowledged that a newsletter will be out by year’s end full of information for residents and readers, so watch for that publication in the near future.

Twas the Year Before Christmas in Assiniboia
'Twas the year before Christmas, and down in the street, The crew dug through water, through sewage, through heat. Knee-deep in the trenches, with grit and with might, They worked through the day and they worked through the night. Catch basins were mended, the manholes made new, Curbstops replaced, waterlines too. With valves that were leaking all fixed in their place, They paved the way forward with skill and with grace. Superior relining kept sewers in check, Centre Street sidewalks rebuilt with respect. New gutters and curbs, fresh pavement so wide, And streetlights that gleamed with a holiday pride. Through closures and detours, through dust and delay, Our businesses stood strong in a challenging way. Adaptable, patient, they weathered the strain, With residents beside them through sunshine and rain. Contractors and crews brought their skill to the street, Together they made every milestone complete. Though conditions were tough, their resilience showed, And gratitude shines for the teamwork bestowed. From snow plows to sanding, from sidewalks to sweeps, From waterline fixes to grass that grows deep. From permits to meetings, from invoices to plans, From dams to lagoons, from fairgrounds to stands. The Aquatic Centre, the Rink, the Town Hall, The landfill, the airport — they managed it all! Each day brought new duties, each task met with pride, Team TOA kept Assiniboia’s heart alive. Summer came shining with fireworks so grand, Canada Day sparkled across all the land. The pool parties splashed, the ball games took flight, And camp days brought laughter from morning to night. The Rebels and Aces brought championships home, With cheers from the bleachers, the pride brightly shown. From curling to hockey, from baseball to play, Assiniboia shines bright in a sporting display. Then came the great moment — the town’s grandest stop, A celebration was planned: the Black Top Hop and Shop! With markets and music, with laughter and cheer, The project was toasted with friends far and near. The Kids Zone was buzzing, the Show n Shine rolled, Ninety cars gleamed; their stories retold. Five hundred Museum burgers, six hundred Slices of Joy, Bean Lover lines endless, New Moon smorg; Oh Boy! The beer gardens sparkled, the band played on stage, The town came together, all smiles to engage. And coins were presented, a keepsake so fine, With Wes’s car shining on the back in design. Oh what a grand day, what a triumph to share, The Black Top sparkled with laughter and care. Assiniboia rejoiced, with smiles everywhere, A community united — true flair beyond compare! As autumn rolled in, the town gathered near, For Lights of Love glowing, a moment sincere. Centennial Park twinkled, each lantern a flame, A tribute to loved ones, remembered by name. Then winter brought magic, the Santa Parade, With floats and with music, bright memories made. The Twinkle Tour sparkled, the children all beamed, Twinkle Lane shimmered, like a holiday dream. The Festival of Trees lit the season with cheer, A forest of wonder to close out the year. And Team TOA gathered, their spirits so bright, To celebrate Christmas with joy and delight. And as the year ended, a milestone was near, For Raymond marked twenty proud, dedicated years. With gratitude flowing, the town gave its cheer, A legacy honored, respected each year. The Mayor looked back on the year that has passed, On projects and progress, achievements amassed. She hung on her hat with a smile and a grin, For 2026’s journey is about to begin. So here’s to Assiniboia, resilient and true, To the teamwork and spirit that carried us through. Merry Christmas to all, may your hearts be alight, And to all in our town, a most joyful good night! ~ Town of Assiniboia

Sherri Solomko Freelance Reporter The Town of Assiniboia’s Mayor responded to the Assiniboia Times when asked about the overall benefits to the community when continual events and activities are hosted. She provided a very enthusiastic response in this regard. “The Town of Assiniboia has seen remarkable economic momentum this season, thanks to hosting a national curling event, multiple craft sales, hockey tournaments and an exciting line up of Christmas activities that draw visitors from not only our region but from the rest of Canada itself.” The mayor went on to state, “Local businesses have felt a huge surge - our many restaurants and food establishments are filled to capacity, hotels reporting some of their strongest weekends of the year and our many wonderful retailers enjoying increased foot traffic as visitors
explored the community between events.” Mayor Schaunenberg also attested that vendors at The Mistletoe and Christmas Lane sales shared that Assiniboia and area shoppers were enthusiastic and supportive with vendors reporting some great sales on their items. “The National Mixed Canadian Curling Championship delivered a major boost, bringing teams, families and spectators who not only filled local establishments but also helped to showcase Assiniboia’s warm hospitality, wellrun facilities, our many dedicated volunteers and our vibrant spirit.” The mayor also notes that hockey tournaments further added to the buzz, with so many outof-town guests enjoying not only Assinboia’s many amenities there is to offer, but the town’s beautiful Southland Co-op Centre, which no matter what age, is a dream to play in.”

Assiniboia sees economic spinoffs resulting from hosting events
Sherri Solomko Freelance Reporter It’s not just tourism and community exposure that benefit from hosting seasonal or sports events, or other activity year-round that takes place in Assiniboia. Assiniboia’s economy is also a beneficiary. Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce President, Shelly Dahlman, told the Assiniboia Times,” The Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce recognizes that hosting national championships, seasonal markets, Christmas-themed festivities, hockey games, and tournaments generates significant economic value for our community. These events attract visitors from across the region and beyond, resulting in increased patronage for local hotels, restaurants, retailers, and service providers. The influx of visitors stimulates spending, supports local jobs, and helps showcase Assiniboia as a vibrant destination.” Dahlman said their organization has received positive
feedback from visitors who have attended these events and many of those have expressed appreciation for the welcoming atmosphere and quality of local amenities. “Several guests noted the convenience of our accommodations and the variety of shops and dining options available, with some indicating plans to return for future events.” The Chamber acknowledged it is challenging to assign an exact dollar value without a formal economic impact study. Preliminary assessments suggest that events like these collectively contribute tens of thousands of dollars to the local economy during the November and December period. “The direct and indirect benefits—ranging from overnight stays to increased retail activity—create a ripple effect that supports both small businesses and the broader community.” Dahlman also added that the Chamber is commit-
ted to supporting and promoting events that drive economic growth and strengthen community spirit. As well, they continue to look for ways to maximize these opportunities. Hosting duties also showcases local culture and attractions while fostering community pride, leveraging small-town charm and supportive community spirit.

AES: all about balance with curriculum learning and holiday activity
Sherri Solomko Freelance Reporter Once December comes, teachers know it’s a balance between holiday fun and continued curriculum learning. The holidays come with fun activities both inside the school and within the community and sometimes that can serve as a distraction for students, especially as the Christmas break nears. Grade 8 Homeroom Teacher at Assiniboia Elementary School, Laurie Hawkins said, “In Grade 8 ELA (Mrs. Coghill), students will be reading and analyzing the poem, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. They will create a parody of the poem as they work on literary devices and give a dramatic presentation of their work. We will explore the different types of irony while reading ‘The Gift of the Magi’. Then we will compare O. Henry’s version to the Disney version.” Mrs. Hawkins said that the Grade 6A class, led by
Mrs. Rasmussen, will be connecting social curriculum of celebrating other’s cultures and beliefs by learning about winter/Christmas traditions in other countries. “Descriptive writing assignment about their other personal traditions during our two-week break allows students who don’t celebrate Christmas a chance to talk about traditions/celebrations in their own cultures.” Students took part in the Science Centre Go Outreach program that did a presentation for Grades 5 and 6 on two different days, teaching students about sustainability and climate in Saskatchewan. “In most classes, teachers try to add some form of activity - puzzles, art, etc. around the Christmas as well as other holiday themes,” added Mrs. Hawkins. Extra curricular curling has started for students in Grades 5 and 6, taking place on Tuesday afternoons from 4 to 5 p.m. Students will learn the skills of curling and will have mini games against each other. dents practise on Thursday afternoons from 4 to 5 p.m. and will learn and practise their curling skills in preparation for sectionals taking place January 23, which hopefully leads to a District competition spot on January 30. Basketball has started for both boys and girls, with two teams in each category. Teams will play games until February when they move into playoffs. Grades 5 and 6 basketball will begin in January. AES held a Winterland dance on November 20, with 130 students attending. Baking was donated for the event by the School Community Council Balancing curriculum with holiday events is crucial for student well-being and academic success, as it provides necessary rest to prevent burnout while also offering opportunities to enrich learning. By integrating holidays into the curriculum, schools can make learning more engaging, and proper balance ensures students return to school refreshed and motivated.

Feeling winter-ful? Check out these weather predictions Sherri Solomko Freelance Reporter Tom Allen said it best, “Winter forms our character and brings out our best.” While we got to expect some unseasonably nice weather in October and November, it looks like Old Man Winter will change things up for December and January in Saskatchewan. Depending on which weather source you rely on, it has been indicated that cold weather, even edging on what is described as frigid arctic air could be the norm. Early December brought some temperature fluctuations however that is expected to change to blasts of cold air dropping temperatures to a more traditional prairie winter. The Weather Network is stating in its winter forecast that blasts of arctic air will have temperatures plummeting in Decem-
ber. The tip of the iceberg, no pun intended, is that weather forecasters are stating that colder than normal temperatures could linger into March meaning a delayed transition into spring. Southwestern Saskatchewan is said to be where the snowfall forecasts will happen including areas south and west of Regina that would encompass Assiniboia, Moose Jaw and Swift Current. Typically, January has tended to be the coldest month of the year in the province and forecasters are saying that is likely going to be the case again. But wait, the Farmer’s Almanac says something a little different citing, temperatures could be above normal, with coldest periods being early December and early February. Precipitation is to be above normal with snowiest stretches in November and early December.

For those of you that appreciate nontraditional weather forecasting, the Pig Spleen Weather Prognostication report usually comes out late December or sometime in January. Judging from last year’s accuracy rate,
this might be something local residents will want to follow. Official sources: For the most upto-date daily and weekly forecasts, it is recommended to use official sources like Environment Canada.

Bengough Holiday Greetings
This year, give the gift of reading
Books make wonderful gifts for people of all ages. They provide entertainment and an escape. They’re a source of knowledge and creativity. They can also help with relaxation and focus. One don’t need to be a bookworm to appreciate a good book. With the vast selection of publications available, you’re sure to find something that will capture the interest of your loved ones, whether they enjoy golf or romance novels. Not convinced? Between biographies about inspiring personalities, thought-provoking essays, helpful guides, children’s books, fantasy sagas, historical accounts, urban romances, manga, poetry collections, detective novels, psychological thrillers and comic books, there’s something for everyone! However, be mindful when choosing a book for someone else. It’s important to know the personal
ity and preferences of the person you’re buying for. Newspaper subscriptions also make unique Christmas gifts. With technology that is available, one can even sign up for an e-subscription, and receive their community newspaper emailed to them. Be creative and find fun, personal keepsake stories from your local newspaper about the recipient’s life or family history to authentic vintage editions from significant dates, or even themed “North Pole” newspapers for children, used as creative gift wrap or stocking stuffers.
Merry Christmas Wishes to all our Friends and Customers We look forward to serving you in 2 2026 026

What gift should you give someone who loves all things food? If you have a foodie in your life, consider one of these tasty and exciting ideas to make them happy this Christmas. A class or workshop Give your loved one the chance to develop their culinary skills in a class focused on their favourite type of cuisine, such as tapas, pastries or sushi. Some classes are also available online. Handy, right? A trip If your budget allows, treat your gourmand to an adventure in Italy to savour authentic Italian cuisine or explore Peruvian flavours in Peru. If you prefer to stay closer to home, a weekend getaway a few hours away can introduce them to new tastes and experiences.
A gourmet meal Does your foodie dream about going to a specific highend restaurant? Now’s your chance to book a table or give them a gift certificate for two. Sharing a special meal always makes the experience more enjoyable. A kitchen accessory or appliance Find out what could elevate your loved one’s kitchen experience. A luxury saucepan, a set of sharp knives, a bread maker, an ice cream maker, a stand mixer, a griddle or a glass cake dome are all fantastic options. A gourmet gift basket Choose an expertly prepared gift basket, or get creative and make your own. Fill it with a variety of items like
gourmet condiments, artisanal spreads and unique spices. The customization possibilities are endless! Baked goods and sweets Make it from the heart. Look up recipies and make baked gifts that are sure to delight. Involve the whole family by designing festive-shaped cookies like gingerbread people or candy cane cookies, or jam-filled thumbprints. A book Bookstore shelves are full of books celebrating the pleasures of gastronomy. Depending on your loved one’s preferences, you could buy them a book about the cuisine from a specific country, particular types of dishes or special diets like vegetarian, sugar-free or organic.

Lafleche Holiday Greetings
This year, break the ice at Christmas parties with karaoke! Games like musical chairs, bingo, white elephant and limbo are great games to liven up Christmas Eve and other holiday parties. In recent years, karaoke has become a popular addition to the lineup of fun. Are you hosting a holiday party and looking for a fresh way to keep your guests entertained? Organize a karaoke night. Equipment Whether you rent a private room or prefer to sing and dance in the comfort of your own home, you’ll need essential equipment, including: • At least two goodquality microphones. • A screen or projector to display the lyrics. • A stereo or speakers. • A computer, tablet or smartphone. • Karaoke software, platform or app. To create the ultimate karaoke atmosphere, add fun lights, a smoke ma-
chine and a disco ball. If you plan to host karaoke nights regularly, consider purchasing equipment. Otherwise, you can rent professional equipment from a specialty company. Playlist Many karaoke systems allow singers to make special requests. However, some guests might need a bit of inspiration. Help them out by creating a playlist of well-known songs, including some holiday classics. Rules Before the party begins, explain the rules to your guests to avoid misunderstandings. For example, set a limit of three songs per person and establish a rotation system. Finally, don’t forget to provide both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink options, as well as snacks, like chips and appetizers. Merry Christmas and enjoy your karaoke night!

Stay green with an eco-friendly Christmas Holiday gatherings often produce a certain amount of waste, but you can still reduce your carbon footprint. At this time of year, consider decorating your home sustainably. Here are a few ideas to incorporate into your holiday decor. Use objects from nature Explore your local park or a nearby wooded area to find fallen pinecones and turn them into decorations like garlands or tree ornaments. You can also dry slices of citrus fruit and arrange them in a serving dish with cinnamon sticks to create a table centrepiece. Choose items made of recycled or organic materials: local artisans offer countless eco-friendly alternatives. For example, you can buy soy candles or ornaments made from fabric scraps. This choice benefits the planet while adding a unique touch to your holiday decorating. Consider the impact of your Christmas tree: It’s hard to imagine Christmas without a tree. The same question always comes up: real or artificial? A locally sourced real tree typically has a lower environmental impact than an artificial counterpart.
Down-Home Holiday Wishes May your season be filled with the people and traditions that bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart.
Merry Christmas!

Be cautious and smart when shopping for gifts using online stores Doing your holiday shopping online definitely has its advantages. It helps you escape those crowded malls and avoid driving in snowy conditions. If the online option appeals to you, make sure to avoid these pitfalls. Don’t forget to read product descriptions carefully Pay attention to dimensions, materials, sizes, language and other important details specific to the product you’re buying to avoid disappointment. Whether it’s furniture, clothing or electronics, vague descriptions may be a sign that the website isn’t legitimate, so be cautious.
Don’t wait until the last minute Online shopping and procrastination don’t mix well during the holidays. Start your search early to ensure your gifts arrive on time. Check estimated delivery dates and, ideally, give yourself some extra time in case of delays. If you’re running behind, be prepared to pay for express shipping. Don’t blindly trust an unknown website Use secure and reliable websites that provide thorough information, including full contact details and clear exchange and refund policies. Do the prices seem too good to be true? Are there exorbitant extra fees? Is the site cluttered with broken links and buttons? If so, it’s best to click away. Stick to websites you’re familiar with, especially those of local retailers. Don’t neglect to read the return policy Before making a purchase, take the time to understand the return policy. Ask yourself: can you get a refund, or is it an exchange-only situation? Do your homework to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Thanks to this community for your trust, support and friendship through the years. May faith, friends and loved ones light up your life this Christmas season and always!

Before extending the invitation, be sure to consult your partner and other family members. Chances are they’ll empathize with your guest and welcome them with open arms.
